Lovely spot in a shopping mall (parking available). Staff is attentive, and we were seated almost immediately. They even have some outdoor seating. High-backed booths offer privacy without feeling like you're boxed in. Well lit and comfortable. Whole page of vegetarian (and vegan) options available. Varied appetizers, biryani, meals for two, and even an ayurvedic meal option. Beer, wine, soda. Everything you'd expect, plus a few less common options. The food was fresh, very flavorful, and decent portion size (don't be fooled by the decorative bowls they serve in - there is more than it looks like). Found this recommended by locals in a Reddit thread (some responses from several years ago) - and it's obvious why this restaurant is still around. Damn good food at good prices. read more

Absolutely delicious food - tasted like food from India! The bhatura melts in your mouth- the daal was so delicious even the kids loved it! They were so kind - service was so great - even gave us free dessert in the end. They've done a fantastic job decorating as well - looked like Nepal. A wonderful surprise Ventura treat in an "old mall area" across from a closed Burger King! After a 26+ miles bike ride on the Coastal Pacific Trail route, a fellow biker & dear friend took me here for a most delightful & tasty dining experience! The service is supreme, "Sunny" was most pleasant, friendly, and accommodating. He took time telling us what our dishes were and the tastes were extraordinary! It's similar to Indian cuisine where you can request spiciness in numbers from 1 to 5. I ordered 2 and it needed more!=o) The sumptuous feast starts with Chai tea and culminates with a rich, flavorful rice pudding... A truly great place for a "Viking" Feast after a marathon ride or just with families & friends! The ambiance is unique and curiously pleasing as we sat next to shelves of merchandise and a Buddhist altar. I had forgotten what we ordered since my fellow Viking (biking) paid for the sumptuous feast but you can see them in the pix... We were served with generous, meaty servings, unlike other restaurants, perfectly cooked basmati white rice, and warm & delicious garlic naan... what a feast! There was enough food to bring home to my wife for a surprise meal and she loved it! The food was so good she was motivated to find a similar restaurant serving the same dishes the following day... If you need to excite your senses and send your palate to adventurous heights, come eat here! This place is highly recommended to bring families and friends for a great lunch or a romantic dinner... I came here with a friend based on her recommendation. Food was good. Service was good as well. The restaurant is really put together. I had the butter chicken, medium spice however, it could've been more spicy, which I would have enjoyed a bit more. The garlic naan was really good as well. Been here multiple times and have brought different people with me and have left happy every time! Service has been on par and cleanliness of the restaurant as well. It's a good size restaurant not too small and not too big. They have a small area against the wall to the left displayed with small items you can purchase. I've had different dishes and I don't recall a dish I didn't like. Chicken tikka masala was perfectly seasoned and chicken was not dry. Tofu saag was cooked well. Tofu came in small to medium sized cubes and spinach was lightly chopped. It all meshed well together and was not overly flavored or spiced. Garlic cauliflower reminded me of orange chicken with a slight kick to it. Perfectly crisp but not overly fried. So good! Aloo Cauli had a good consistency. Still had a nice crunch to it but soft enough to bite into easily . Sauce was lightly flavored and paired well with the chickwn tikka masala . Garlic naan is always a must ! Papadam is a thin and crunchy snack, served with mint chutney and tamarind chutney on the side for dipping I loooove to start the meal with. Samosa is a triangular shaped pastry filled with spiced mashed potato and some veggies . I like to dribble some of the tamarind chutney to add some flavor to it. Mo Mo (steamed) reminds me of a steamed gyoza. The dipping paste interestingly pairs well with it. It's served cold and soft. Kheer is a dessert rice pudding. My first time having Nepalese/Indian/Tibetan food in about 7 years. I had always heard about Himalaya and decided to stop by for lunch. I dined in and was given lentil soup as an appetizer. i started off with samosas and naan, I love samosas with tamarind sauce and the cheese and spinach naan I could eat on their own for a meal. I also got steamed chicken momos, the momo sauce pairs perfectly, the spices are well balanced and stand out on their own, not muddled. I ordered the Lamb Vindooloo with a side of rice. I enjoy lamb very much when prepared correctly and the cook seasoned the meat and cooked it perfectly, did not taste gamey at all. After I thought I could not eat another bite, I was pleasantly served the cold ginger rice pudding. So sweet, simple and refreshing. Needed a pick me up for lunch today and was craving something filling, rich, and comforting. Indian food is usually my go to and I was eager to try something a little different as I was working on the Ventura side of town. I remembered Himalaya as it's been open for years and decided today was the day to finally give them a go. I can't rate on interior, ambiance or staff at this time since I only did delivery for this business but hoping to get the full experience some other time when I can stop in. As far as delivery goes this spot has a great menu. I was pleasantly surprised to see all of the options they had to choose from. They had all of the Indian staples I've come to know and love but I was also pretty hyped to see they had Indian pizza and some other cool but non traditional dishes. When ordering from somewhere for the first time though I play it safe with my usuals. I went with the chicken tikka masala, butter naan, and white basmati rice. Kudos to their delivery packaging as everything was clearly marked, traveled well and packaged safely. My order was delivered correctly and with everything I could need which made me very happy! As far as the food goes it's a solid 4 stars from me for now. My chicken tikka masala was good and hit the spot. I just think with so many Indian restaurants and similar dishes, I have others that I would place in my top five. The masala was good here but nothing out of this world. For a casual lunch though I was happy with it. The rice was on point and their butter naan was flavorful and had a lite char which I could appreciate. really a 4.5*. 2 of us on a Sunday at 6pm. no reso needed. nice attentive service. We reviewed the Yelper suggestions and knew what we wanted to order up front. Samosa app was 2 large pieces, not greasy, ample filling to dough ratio with a wonderfully seasoned filling-not too spicy even for my spouse who likes it mild--came with standard dipping chutney and green sauce. The Garlic cauliflower app was disappointing--small overcooked pieces of cauliflower with too much "crust" that was sort of chewy--didn't eat much and won't get again. The Garlic naan was standard and good. Next was the highly recommended Sherpa chicken curry-we got mild and it was a bit boring--next time I would get medium--tender chicken--no knife needed. The highlight of the night was definitely the Lamb saagwala--an ample serving (we will be eating it for dinner again) of tender, lean, perfectly seasoned melt in your mouth lamb. Even though we got mild, the dish was incredibly flavorful. At many places, the spinach dominates with just a few pieces of lamb but at Himalaya, the lamb is definitely the main player (thankfully!). Prices below avg and enough food for a second dinner. We will be back for the lamb and samosas and perhaps medium sherpa chicken! read more

First time here and always wanted to try it. The place hides in a strip mall, the inside is characterized by old style booth and some tables plus an outdoor area, plenty of seating. The welcome was pretty cold, showed up with a kid and never got delivered a rolled napkin with the setup nor a glass for water. I was already kinda turned down. Let's go to the food.. ordered MO MO, butter chicken, vegetarian curry, rice pudding. The food is definitely fresh, made to order and the flavors definitely on point. This hands down is thee best and most traditional Indian food from Napal you will ever have. The service is beyond one can even expect they are professional, kind, endearing, and so hospitable. Anyway, this is one of those rare menus where you really can't go wrong. Whether you're a meat eater or vegetarian they've got you covered. Everything comes out perfectly prepared every single time! Now that takes a level of love and commitment that's hard to find. Sunny Always has a smile and a solid recommendation if you're looking to try something new. He and the rest of the staff are kind, professional, and attentive. The restaurant also has live entertainment come in periodically. One of my favorite events is when they have Kali come and take the evening to a whole new level with her amazing belly dance show. I really hope the new ownership continues to keep her on the schedule as her occasional presence is a big draw for Us and many other patrons I'm sure. The interior space is peaceful and inviting. Dishes like the Tandori Artichoke, Vegetable Samosas served with mint chutney, Tandori chicken tikka and the coconut curry chicken are all flavor-bombs that I can't recreate and the prices are so reasonable for the quality of the food! The servers are gracious & we were offered ice cream after the meal but we were so full that we could not accept it. Tips: We had no problem getting a table early evening on a Sunday but I'm sure this restaurant on the Avenue fills up during peak times. They offer both inside and outside tables and are very accommodating even for large parties and children. The food can be spicy but we ordered medium spice or a 3 spice level and that was the perfect amount of heat for us. I'm really disappointed with my experience at Himalaya Cafe in Ventura. We called ahead to let them know we'd be there in about 10 minutes at about 8:20, and they confirmed it was fine. However, when we arrived at 8:31 pm, the kitchen was already closed, even though their Yelp page said they closed at 9 p.m. We were given false information, and the staff wasn't helpful at all. Samosas are huge and delicious, the naan is fresh, curries are rich and exceptionally well spiced, and the staff are an awesome group of mostly guys from Nepal who I am sure would look forward to answering any questions you might have about that beautiful and ancient country. I want to send a special shout out to Raj, a server. We have been lucky enough to have at our table a number of times. We have always had such a lovely experience at Himalaya restaurant. The outside dining area has a peaceful ambience, with a lovely foundation. It feels like a little getaway inside ventura, where they also had a table big enough to accommodate our 10+ person group. Because we're vegan, we really appreciated that they have a whole vegan section on their menu. Some of our favorites included the gobi manchurian, veggie momos (we prefer the steamed over the fried), coconut veggie curry, chana masala, and tofu saag. The tandoori roti is also vegan and delicious. Service was wonderful, caring, and attentive. For dessert, we enjoyed the vegan mango ice cream, and our non-vegan friends enjoyed the pistachio. The prices for everything was very reasonable, considering we had multiple appetizers, multiple entrées shared family style among us all, and dessert. We were thrilled! read more

Formerly named Himalaya, this spot creates excellent Nepalese and Indian foot, with a relaxing atmosphere and excellent service by Sonny and all the staff. I've been going here since they opened about 14 years ago, when I stopped by on a whim after a mtn bike ride with a friend. It's been one of our favorite regular spots ever since.
