This review is based on my visit back in October. As far as I know, this place is pretty unique where you can actually buy marijuana related things, order food, smoke pot AND eat in the dining room, or just smoke in the basement lounge.  You can even rent stuff to smoke. Just to be clear, i don't smoke pot and don't intend to anytime soon. A friend of mine recommend me this place for their great tasting food so i decided to try it out just for the food. Vibe: Inside, they got some catchy reggae music playing in the background. You can definitely smell weed as soon as you come in. They got really cool marijuana inspired artwork and sculptures hanging on the walls and pretty much everywhere. The decor is really creative and it's almost like a mini museum. Half of the place has a long glass display shelf of hundreds of marijuana related stuff, and the other half is a dining area.  My friend and I came in the morning so there was only one other customer in the whole store at the time. It was pretty quiet. The dining tables were very clean and modern. Service: The staff were super friendly and explained how their business works since I was a first timer as a customer. Apparently the dining area is exclusive for eating until 5pm, if i recall correctly. After that, you're allowed to smoke in the dinng area. Staff were all-around great who really care about the business and it shows in their demeanor. Food: I ordered "The Cheech" grilled cheese sandwich with potato chips (Cheech and Chong reference, i love it!) It had Bacon, Jalapeno, and cheese. My friend ordered the BLT sandwich.  The cheech was actually really good. It tasted like what a GOOD grilled sandwich should be. Bacon and jalapeno gave it a good kick and saltiness. The chips it came with is just a very small bowl of regular salty ruffles chips. A little bit of ketchup is included. A small issue I think is that it's a little overpriced at $10. I can get a much bigger sandwich elsewhere with way more toppings and maybe even a drink. I think they should make it $8 at most or include a choice of drink at least. And giving a little bigger portion of chips would be nice. The chips were maybe only 10 pieces so it's a really small portion. My friend thought his BLT grilled cheese sandwich was better than expected. He liked it. Small note, there was a VERY interesting odor in the place. I'm not used to smelling  interesting, funky flowery smells and eating food in a restaurant, haha.  Overall just based on the taste of food it's great although the value and portion you get is a little less than expected. I can't comment based on personal experience on what a pot smoker would think but based on the other reviews online this place is excellent for just smoking. New amsterdam cafe has such a cool and unique atmosphere. I think that it's so cool that pot is legal in this country! Knowing a place like this exists in Vancouver is still pretty mind-blowing to me.  4 stars for their tasty grilled cheese sandwich. read more

I see you all have some very fine looking seasonal fall selections on the menu for take away and dine in as well as some beautiful new glassware and vaporizers available. My state will definitely be of the last ones in the "US" to get with it concerning cannabis sadly but hey since I'm destined to be a socioeconomic prisoner here (for now) unable to move elsewhere due to personal responsibilities and financial stability here... I have a new doctor near this café and I have stopped in there twice now for a beverage after my appointments. I don't use cannabis but I find this place to be very welcoming, clean, and a pleasant place to visit. Both times I've just had a hot latte including the ubiquitous pumpkin spice in the Vancouver autumn. I really like the interior with its wood finishings and warm but not-bright lighting. There seems to be a lot of air circulation which I like under any circumstances but it's very nice here considering the cannabis products they keep; meaning you don't get overwhelmed by the aroma. I really like the service a lot; you greeted as soon as you walk in the door which is quite far from the service counter since it's actually quite a big interior. I can't speak to their products but they seem popular. read more

Came here on a late Thursday night and my first impression was I love the ambience, but it was pretty warm inside. It had a lot of cool art around it and I loved the galaxy ceiling art. Missed out on the food options though because we did get here a little late, but they did off drink options. Everyone who was there was super chill, just vibin. A great place to just hang out. The guy working here is a complete dckhead. We are tourists and walked in unknowingly before it opened. The website said it was open. He could've simply told us he's closed. Instead, he yelled at us , berated us, and followed us out the door yelling in women's faces. We were totally chill and apologetic for walking in . He should be ashamed of himself. Vancouver welcomed me with open arms, but I unfortunately had empty pockets for such an establishment. Eh, what could I do? This isn't your usual hookah bar, and this isn't the place the next electoral candidate would be seen in. Those who do come here, are very chill, very cool and yet still, very functional-contrary to popular belief. We stopped in at the lure of the New Amsterdam name (hello, does anyone else have Counting Crows in their head now?) but I was also lured in by the seductive red light district vibe it gave off. We shared a water bottle and chocolate chip cookie. I know, not very exciting, but no one judged. I watched from afar as those in the designated smoking room enjoyed their time, and made small talk with the "water pipe" seller who was more than happy to discuss the approved means of "traffic and smoking" in such an establishment. Coming from the Bay Area, we have a pretty lenient tolerance of the mean green. Apparently, Vancover does too. I was caught off guard on a leisurely Monday afternoon, but left with a warm feeling of progressive contentment...knowing that places like this do exist and aren't associated with criminals or frowned upon by the feds. Just go next door to Marc Emery Cafe. Its cleaner, more comfortable and the staff are better, friendlier and less aggressive with customers. Here they not only speak to you like something stuck to the bottom of their shoe in the park across the street - but keep the place as clean as a crack mattress. New Amsterdam was once cool - not any more. Now they are slow and disengaged - shocking I know - but the killer is the cleanliness of the place and their attitude. Their equipment is literally matted with build up, residue and gets rented out filthy, every time. This all while a bottle of alcohol sits unused by the counter, begging to be. I wouldn't mind if it was free to use and they made cash on their drinks and food - but this owner does both. Not only are they renting every person in the place their space by the hour, but overcharging for everything else they sell too. All with the drone of overly loud, B-grade hard rock from an era that none of us live in. Friendly hippies? Hardly. I have rarely seen staff as rude. These are hard core capitalists, and they seemingly don't care much for any repeat business - they cater to tourists who they think will never be back again, so they don't care. They not only charge $5 per hr, per person - but then have the cannon balls to not clean their equipment for weeks or months but demand customers use filthy mouthpieces, gauze and bags. And if you happen to mention it or point it out to them, they are either aggressively rude or the white guy with corn rows simply looks at you with that blank stare one gets from a dog watching television. Seriously - the place needs a staff overhaul and a thorough cleaning. Not only of the store, but of their equipment, prep area, toilets and everything else. And until they do - I just head next door to Marc Emery Cafe, take a seat overlooking the park and sit down knowing I will head home without a layer of filth sticking to me. Disgusting. read more

Now back to the new stuff... Before was just drinks, snacks, pastries, etc. now there's wraps, and MORE.. Much better menu options for those who's appetite gets a little more worked up than just a bag of chips.. *cough* Check out the photos on here for a snapshot of the new menu board. There's some familiar faces (Hi boys!) and some new staff (cute girls finally!) too... They are a hard working bunch, despite popular concept, and tipping in green is always nice! ^_~ What to know: BYOMJ. Don't ever ask around. $2 minimum (try the new items!) a seat, to keep out loafers. Just scan the tables, there's a drink or food in front of everyone there, so just volunteer to get on-board, belly up and order. It's RESPECT. Just came in with a group of friends and had a good time while we were there but as we were leaving they charged us each $10 for sitting on their couch. First of all, they didn't even tell us about the $10 charge, and they were extremely rude and hostile regarding the charge. We were happy the whole time there but that totally ruined the experience. If the name hasn't tipped you off to the nature of this "café", the sickly smell that culminates through its entrance will. This is a weed café, serving all of its teas and food to people smoking weed at the tables, without actually selling pure marijuana itself. The décor suits every preconceived stereotype you've ever had about people who smoke dope, including large decorative hookahs, "legalize it" stickers attached to the cash register, and big black light posters of rock stars who were probably on heroin and not pot. The people who frequent the place are people who have made smoking pot a part of their image, like people with dreadlocks, hemp clothing, and all around accessories that make real daily pot smokers feel ashamed and unfairly categorized. The booths are comfortable, and it is kind of nice to be smoking weed inside a place of business. I came upon this place after exploring the cafes along Hastings street. It's entrance attracts eyes to the various glassware and marijuana related things encompassed within the glass showcases that lead into the store. Once you enter you're greeted with high ceilings and colourful hand-painted artwork that makes the place so unique. If there's something you need in your adventures of marijuana then this place has it. They stock vapes, glassware, grinders, containers to store weed in, clothing with their name on it, you name it. They even have postcards if that's your thing. The reason I go so frequently is the vapour bar aspect of the cafe. They let you rent a vapourizer to use for an hour and it is a different, and in my opinion, much better way to smoke marijuana. I go for my chamomile tea and vape, it's a pretty good combination. I've met many interesting people and brought many friends to this place just to have a casual chat and smoke. It's a different atmosphere and it brings out a different vibe from each person that comes and stays to enjoy the place, usually it's a pleasant one. The sandwiches are good, I've personally tried them all just to make sure that I knew which one I liked. I would recommend one of the special grilled cheese sandwiches (So aptly named, the Cheech or the Chong), they are very good (Make sure to ask for ketchup if that's you're style). The various pastries are such a tease when you sit at the bar. They're all very good and they have a nice selection of gluten-free items that would please even the most picky eater. The drinks are good, I come back for the tea and maybe sometimes for a smoothie if I feel like something especially nice. Don't ever get the pie, it is way too good and I have to pretend it's not there to stop myself from getting some each time I visit. But if you do ignore my advice, just remember that it comes with ice cream so enjoy each bite with a bit of it on your spoon, it's how it's meant to be eaten and for good reason. The ventilation is nice, especially for a vapour bar that allows their customers to smoke up joints and bongs, the fans circulate the air around the cafe, allowing the stale smoky air to exit through the back or the front. At night it gets extremely busy. Patrons standing and leaning on the tables to enjoy their smoking and eating, their eyes absently looking around during lulls of silence in their conversations, patiently waiting for those who are finished to leave to eagerly scoop up their seat. But don't let that stop you from coming, it is an experience that I recommend most everyone to try out at least once in their life. During the day it becomes more of a chill location, one where I have in many occasions chosen to do my writing at. If the thought of coming here when it's packed still overwhelms you, come during the day. It's all smiles and friendliness from the staff and the owner. The music varies depending on the person(s) working at the time. Personally, I never had any problem with their music selection, it varies from Hip Hop to electronic and from jazz and rock. Like the music selection, the visitors of this cafe vary from different kinds of places. There are tourists who come to visit and enjoy the sights, students who come during breaks just to enjoy a snack, business men and women in suits and formal attire looking to smoke in between meetings, retirees who are eager to exchange a few words, and many others. So if you fall under the group of people who would never go here, I implore you to rethink and visit it one day, it is an experience that you can't really get anywhere else in North America. read more

Because they have a $2 minimum to hang out there i tired to order something but a girl with purple braids ignored me for 5 minutes and never did take my order at te coffee bar. Front entrance greets you with a large sign prohibiting several things including pics...18+ only and must have id (although nobody is at the door enforcing this) $2 min purchase, no outside food/ drinks allowed, limit stay to 90 min. Staff is friendly, cute lil coffee says bar to your right and vape/420 type items plus cafe souvenirs to your left. Pay $5 to go downstairs to the vapor bar where you can partake in your 420 activities, can't review that part as I was accompanying friends who partake so I stayed upstairs with my hot tea.They have pastries including cinnamon and chocolate croissants, ice cream floats, coffee, tea, sundaes, and even banana split!. I had the London Fog which apparently isn't just a brand jacket lol...it is an Earl grey tea with a shot of vanilla, lighter than chai tea but simply lovely. A pretty chill spot to hang and burn a joint (that we bought across the street) in between our site-seeing activities..we wanted to buy $100+ of merch, but the woman working behind the counter pretended we didn't exist -- after a good five minutes of standing there we decided to just leave. I see there are some mixed reviews re New Amsterdam, from folks in the Bay (SF and East Bay CA). My experience; I planned my trip to Vancouver to specifically spend my 420 celebration there. I spent a great deal of time in both New Amsterdam and another local smoke lounge. First of all the laws aren't questionable here - its illegal to sell not to consume. Please Americans try not to be a "know it all" from first glance and actually talk to the locals - who by the way know their rights and are politically involved in passing laws to legalize cannabis (not by a handful of people but the majority) This was evident when all of downtown Vancouver was fired up with stoners and activists supporting and knowing their rights! Also I keep reading these reviews and people being frustrated that they could not buy tree at New Amsterdam. What! Umm yeah your on vaca, why not have a sweet adventure - talk to people and get around you'll find it is much easier than you think - ease up on being American lazy with everything at your fingertips aha! The biggest laugh I get is when people compare New Amsterdam to being at a cannabis club in California. Umm did you guys forget you have to "prove" yourself as a medical cannabis patient to even get into a CA club to buy or to even smoke legally. Hmm or lets compare this to the ease of getting your smoke where you can (you know the good ole ways) and bringing it back to a chill place all within a chill block - without any questions or id's being handed over - yeah thats BC! C'mon lets do the simple math here :0 I love CA its best place to be in the states, but I had to set the record straight on what smoking in BC feels compared to CA (in my opinion of course). I'm writing this as a visitor from the U.S. I was in Vancouver for a month, and did a lot of research on the pot scene before coming. In everything I read, Vancouver was the place to get and smoke pot. In fact, it is called Vansterdam. So I was looking forward to my time here, and enjoying a more relaxed attitude towards smoking than what we experience in the states (my state, at least). On my first morning, I stopped in to the New Amsterdam Cafe. There was hardly anyone there. I sat at the bar and ordered a latte, and had a nice chat with the "bartender". He laid out the way the cafe works. I didn't ask where to get weed, and he didn't offer. According to what I had read, one shouldn't ask the employees about getting weed. It was said that anyone should be able to find pot anywhere in the city, and especially in front of the cafe. So I finished my latte and left. A few nights later, I visited the cafe again. This time it was a busy Friday evening. I pulled up to the bar and immediately the bartender staring setting me up with a vape. I told him I didn't need it because I hadn't come up with anything yet. Then he went into this dissertation about how I really should not be in the cafe if I didn't have any weed. They didn't want people without weed to "mooch" off of those that do have it. I left and went outside to hang a bit. I had read if one hangs out in front of the cafe, a dealer would surely approach and ask if you need anything. The only person to approach me was a woman looking for money to buy a coffee. Instead of giving her money, I took her and bought her a coffee. I had one more similar experience there when a man, who was strung out on something, approached me and spent 45 minutes talking about absolutely nothing. I got rid of him, and gave up for the night. During the month in Vancouver, I caught whifs of pot quite often. So I know people are smoking it. I hung out more in front of the cafe, hung out in parks, walked along the beach, constantly looking for someone to buy a small amount from. But I have to say, after one month here, I came up empty handed. It is almost a type of sub-culture that hasn't quite figured out how to behave. I believe the locals who have it, treat it like a special club, and don't want outsiders honing in. I certainly did not want to be rude and blatantly ask everyone I saw, but I thought it would be much easier. After reading the last review, I understand a bit more. People in Vancouver smoke pot. And they do it on the streets, in the parks, and in the New Amsterdam Cafe. But try to come in from the states and partake, and you may come up short. I don't know why they don't just legalize it and be done with it. Next time I will bring my own. read more

This place is exactly what you would expect. A café with mediocre food and hot beverages full of stoners smoking weed. I'm not really a big weed smoker but have been here in the past with friends, and - let me tell you - you don't even need to smoke to get high here. The mix of different varieties and blends in the air is enough to have you stumbling out of there with a smile on your face in short order. I tend to order the hot apple cider without whipped cream. It's way too sweet but tastes good. Like I said, the food is mediocre, but it comes to a point where everything tastes wonderful, so you probably won't mind. Oh - no smoking before 5. Keep this in mind if you're visiting in the day. Edited to clarify: I'm talking about MARIJUANA SMOKING. There is obviously no cigarette smoking inside this establishment. It's relaxing just to hang out here even if you're not a pothead. And they do have the best munchies . . . the peanut butter chocolate chip cookie was incredible. This place is a hangout to smoke your medicinal marijuana from the club next door, and the air is heady and thick with the smell of sweeter dank than I usually smell in Oakland from the random car somebody's hot-boxing in. Pot has never agreed with me, I just don't have the right chemical makeup for it, I think, but I've always enjoyed the company of those for whom it does the trick. My husband and I made a stop here on a daily basis during our 7 day trip to Vancouver last week. The place is pretty cool and as far as I know the only "smoke-friendly" place with the exception of the place next door and across the street. The food items are just what you need. All walks of like stop through this Cafe on a daily basis. Very friendly people, with very good party favors. Please know that they DO NOT SALE CANNABIS at this location or anywhere else for that matter. You look reall dumb when you walk in there asking people where you can "score" when the signs clearly say "don't ask".. We watched tons of "Americans/states folks" walk in there and make complete asses of themselves. But if you are smart enough to do your research you will find that "scoring" is very easy to do, you just have to be smart and patient about it, not stupid and fast. read more

When people come to Vancouver, they're usually pretty amazed at how laissez-faire the city is about pot and other street drugs. Technically, it's still illegal, but pot is socially acceptable. If you're interested in exploring the culture of pot, hookah, and other drugs, or are looking for a cool place to indulge your hard-won habits, the New Amsterdam is the place to do it. Upon entering, I was hit with a wave of pot smoke. Since I was here to check out the herbal tobacco hookah supplies, and actually don't like the smell of marijuana, I fought a little through the initial whoa! But they have a fantastic selection of pipes and smoking accessories for both hookah and pot smoking, so I was really impressed. My favourite was a pipe shaped like the three-eyed fish from the Simpsons. Hehehe. Simpsons. There was also a crazily extensive selection of magazines on hemp and marijuana, plus hemp clothing. The front counter staff were all really helpful and nice. There's a fee to go into the cafe, and you must supply your own, er, refreshments. The cafe was busted before, so they're super careful now. Posters of Marc Emery, leader of the Canadian Marijuana Party (yes, we have an official political party dedicated to legalizing it), are everywhere. In the very back is a small room, the size of the average apartment washroom, filled with what they swear up and down are all legal "herbal remedies" such as powders designed to calm anxiety and hallucinogenic mushrooms. Sustainably gathered from our local mountains? Who knows? All I know is that the gentleman minding this store was completely wasted. It's usual a great place, I've been visiting there for a few years. Yesterday I was there and the staff is mostly horrible. I sat on the bar and got the worst attitude from a couple of the guys there. I brought my own weed, left a great tip and they were still jerks. Both times I was there. Walk in, get your smoke on. Easy as pie. No purchase required. Need a vape? Rent one out for 5$ and hour per person (I have NEVER been asked to pay 5$ more than once and have stayed 3+ hours!) Munchie food, cool lounges, cool hngout spot. This is definitely a cool location- beware, it is not a spot that entails much in terms of things to do, it is very much just a hangout kind of place. Great place. Hung out here while waiting on a later flight and the owner was very welcoming and personally took care of our luggage and really accommodated us. I ordered a chai latte which was great. And they have an awesome downstairs long for anyone to hang out or smoke if they please after paying a $5 cover change for that area. But upstairs is just your usual friendly cafe. read more

Sadlly, I am considered a "yankee" to some canadians. My first time to Vancouver was excellent! I have never really been out of my country and pretty much just went with the flow and the vibe of Vancouver. I was very impressed with the New Amsterdam Cafe, we visited everyday. I didn't believe it until I saw it first hand. Anyone who thinks pot should be illegal needs to visit The New Amsterdam Cafe. The variety of people here runs from business execs and hippies to grandmas. BTW no smoking during the weekdays before 5pm (only vaporizers - which they rent). NAC offers a variety of bongs, pipes, papers and t-shirts. They also stock potato chips, baked goods and ice cream... NAC DOES NOT sell weed - instead you trade with a local who brought their own stash (offer munchies or sodas, not cash). read more

I've been here a few times and always enjoy it. No frills but a cool environment. Whether you want to sit at the bar and use a Volcano, just sit at a table and spark a spliff or break out your own gear and rip a bong or dab, you're in the right place. It's free to sit in the lobby and spark up. Some of the other other places charge a small cover. They have a great snack bar with lots of tasty snacks and munchies fit for the hungriest stoner. Everyone seems pretty friendly and engaging. Just don't be that annoying out of towner with no green, no tact and no clue. Have fun. read more
