Will start out with the good before moving on to the disappointing. I called Nelson when I locked myself out of my town house. Told him my landlord was on his way back with his family but was about an hour away, asked if he could be there sooner and he said he could be at my place within 5 min. Asked what the quote would be and he said "I won't know that until I see the lock." Once he said that, I knew it would probably be expensive but I needed the place unlocked. Nelson did get their within 5 min with a van full of equipment. Now the downside: He walks up to my door and right away says, "I can't open that lock" says he would need a special key and he doesn't have it. Gave me the option to drill my lock out but wouldn't have the equipment to patch it up, told him i'd pass on that and just wait for my landlord. I thanked him and he then told me that I would still be charged a trip of $30! Mind you, he lived 5 min away from me and didn't even touch the door! Then asked me if I had cash on me to pay him? Told him no, since my money was inside my home. The real icing on the cake was when he gave me his business car and told me to call him if I ever needed to be unlocked from my car. I then proceeded to ask him again why he couldn't unlocked my town house and he said, " that kind of lock requires a special tool that cost about $400 and I don't find it necessary to invest in something like that." This is 2021, these locks are only gonna get more high tech! Safe to say I told him I wouldn't be using him if I were to ever get locked out of my vehicle. read more

Had Ken Nelson out to repair the front door lock. He responds promptly to calls, including checking if immediate service is needed if a property can't be safety secured until he arrives. In this instance, was okay to set up a next day appointment. He arrived on time and completed the work very effectively -- including adjustments to the door overall that were greatly appreciated. (We use Nelson's Lock & Key at my place of work too -- a vintage 1950's building that has many doors/locks, but never one that Ken Nelson couldn't address/rebuild/make operational.) Wanted to change our locks and Ken had to change more locks than we originally mentioned. He even ended up having to switch out a door knob and install a deadbolt. The locksmith wasn't able to unlock our car from the outside. He pried the passenger door slightly open and tried to press the unlock button with that long stick they use. He couldn't get it and left. When the next company finally came, the locksmith used the same technique but pulled the inside door handle....why didn't the first guy do that?? 2 stars because he was nice. read more

Do NOT use him. I've never had an experience like this. I called him on Monday and scheduled him to come out and replace a door handset and install a keypad lock. Appt was on Thursday. He called Thursday morning and scheduled a window from 10-12. We are having our front doors painted tomorrow so the deadline was hard fixed. He came out within that window but wrote down the WRONG ADDRESS so couldn't find the house. He called but I didn't get the message for about an hour. Called him back and he kept telling me how GPS took him to the wrong place, details re the turns it took him on, etc etc and he'd already moved on to the next job, etc. I confirmed our correct address and he returned. When he was writing up the invoice he said he had to charge me for the extra trip charge! Me: "so you wrote down the wrong address & you're going to charge me for it?" Him: "Yes. You didn't answer your phone.". I told him I thought that was pretty unprofessional but he didn't budge. He charged me an extra trip charge that almost equalized the installation charge when it was HIS error. No apology for his error but worse is that he billed for it. I needed my locks changed after losing a key. Out comes the Pacifica city phone book; there is Nelson's Lock & Key prominently advertised. I called and they showed up to the residence to rekey two locks. The work was done, $$$ exchanged and off we both went about our lives. 1 week later, the Baldwin deadbolt lock wouldn't retract when the key was turned in the lock. This prevented me from opening the door. It wasn't that way before the guy took the deadbolt apart as part of re-keying the lock. So - expecting good customer service and honoring a commitment to quality - I called these folks to see if they would fix the problem. "I never touched the deadbolt lock" says the guy over the phone. Well - as it turns out, we have digital pictures taken on my camera with the guy on his knees, in front of the door, with the lock taken apart and pieces in his hands. I should have gone with the alarm bells going off in my head when Nelson's technician wanted to charge for issuing a cash receipt, they wanted to add $$$ for use of a credit card and for complaining about having to come out twice to accommodate my schedule (for which they charged and were paid). Anyway - word of mouth on my street is - Nelson's a no-go for locksmithing in the area. read more
