Is this another gwai lo bar taking over the local grime and pubs from yesteryear? Since I lived right around the corner, I figured it was important to see what the deal was. Here's the deal: This place is awesome and over the past 2 years, I've become a regular. Of the M1 nightlife establishments, Nathan Left is certainly the most unique. The exterior features a classic Hollywood marquee sign, along with open door seating at their downstairs pub where there is just enough room for people to enjoy a view out on the street while drinking a pint. The second floor, where a majority of the people are is stunning from a decor standpoint. It is mainly a lounge with very contemporary decor pieces and dynamic ones that change in from night in to night out (depending on their theme) along with tables, a stage, a classy bar, and a performing stage. Hidden in the back are pool tables, a karaoke room, and even beer pong. When I say I was blown away by the place, I was even more taken aback when I came back on different nights and the interior was transformed. One night was for a movie night and it was 1920s flapper party and the next night it was b-boys, big beats, and a hell of a hip hop night. For most other nights, it's a showcase of some of the best Filipino cover bands one can find. The menu is mainly a mix of western food, which like any M1 spots are typically grossly overpriced and typically mediocre. I was however, impressed at some of the items, such as their "wurst" sausage variety, and even their $650HKD steak which was exactly how I wanted it -- medium rare. Even I was surprised when I found their hamburgers and pizza to be strangely tasty. Despite all of this, I'd still opt for their drinks more than anything. The drinks are standard, but well done. There is a pretty solid selection of whiskey, and some beers on tap. It's not the most extensive selection of alcohol by any means, but it'll more than do the job for people who can order typical cocktails. The staff is young, professional, and very multilingual. My first few visits here were taken care of by Jordan, who despite looking like a fella from Ireland, was in fact a Hong Kong native and mercilessly trolling folks with his flawless Cantonese. The same for the gorgeous Zasha, who served every drink with a smile. Or absurdly friendly Jerome, who knew exactly how to get the party started. Finally, the manager Tony would give a hearty handshake to his regulars every time they entered / exited the joint. It seems like a moot point by now, but this really was my nightlife home away from home. It was a fun occasion any night of the week, a great place for a date, group fun, or a solo drinking session. And finally, an awesome place to listen to quality music and indulge in great company.

The real reason to come, however, are the cover bands. This bar makes more than adequate use of its upstairs space to host spectacular cover bands that will truly play you any song in the world. We ordered 4 cocktails and only 1 was good. We didn't finish the other 3 because they just tasted horrible. My advice is just get something simple like gin and tonic or coke and rum. Their own signature cocktails were a waste of money. We also ordered fries and fried chicken which were overcooked. They were probably left in the fryer for too long. The wagyu beef slider was actually quite delicious but hey we paid $180 for 1 slider it'd better be good. Overall it was a very disappointing experience. I don't think I would come back again..

An absolute delight to have as a server, and frankly while my review isn't particularly positive, I would have found the experience to be borderline 1 star just based on the actual flavors of the food relative to the pricing if not for him having saved the experience. If I could do this dinner again, I would honestly order less food, as you get the same view whether you order a single tasting menu and grab some takeout elsewhere afterwards, but at face value the flavors seemed bold yet feasible, as though they could turn out well depending on the execution. In reality we ended up spending approximately $1200HKD per person on a tasting menu that had one to two memorable items each. We actually spent an additional $98HKD on a dish that neither one of us felt compelled to finish. The second course tempura was more interesting flavor-wise than either of our mains, in part due to the chili infused tempura sauce doing a lot of heavy lifting. We are not generally fine dining individuals, it is an occasion we reserve for special events (this was our anniversary), but we do have enough experience to know that the execution of these dishes was miles away from a single Michelin star, yet commanded prices well above most of the one-star restaurants we've visited. The waiter took plenty of photos to commemorate the experience, and we managed to see both the 8PM "city of lights" show on the businesses spread along the harbor, as well as a fascinating lightning storm directly in front of us in a massive panoramic, which should lead to an unforgettable night, but the quality of the food left us grasping at straws to find silver linings. I wish I could remember this experience more fondly, but every time a family member asks whether we enjoyed the food, we struggle to muster any enthusiasm and at roughly $2,800HKD after 10% service charge I can't help but wish we had gone elsewhere to get better food and just visited some sort of observation deck instead.

Dark wooden walls, small intimate space, piano playing softly, staff in white jackets, dim lighting, well stocked bar. In the back of the tiny bar, there is another small space with some lounge spots for bigger groups of 4-6 people, but still intimate. They serve you little snacks with your drinks, including some amazing cocoa covered nuts dusted in fine salt and some high quality olives. So you ask how was the martini? Well, it was exceptional. Most barkeeps tend to put too much vermouth and a vodka martini is then ruined. This barkeep was perfect. They bring the martini already poured, so you do not see the shaker or its contents. My only beef was that my martini was served in a great piece of traditional normal size martini glassware (not too thick and the perfect thinness as it hits your lip!), but the drink itself only took up about 40% of the glass. It was almost as if the bartender made me a "half" martini. It was so noticeable that we thought this might be an accident and were kind of giggling. It would be for this reason my Yelp review of a 4 versus a 5. The drink itself though was perfect! And as par for the course for a fancy "mini" drink in a swanky spot, the prices are expensive.
