A goal while in Hong Kong find a brewery!!!! Lol nothing came up on the HK side but Jay O found this place in Kowloon. Off we were across the island to get here. A short trip on the ferry which provided awesome views. The place is small with about 6 tables and 4 bar seats. They had about 9 different taps made in China. Found this place thanks to Yelp. It is not very far from the ferry terminal, maybe a ten to fifteen minute walk. Located on a dead end street, their is not much foot traffic of people just walking around. It is easy to locate. Not very large but with friendly staff. Place was almost empty when I stopped in around 2 in the afternoon. I ordered a mega flight which was everything on tap. It was a nice way to sample some of Hong Kong's local beers in a short period of time. Overall, the beers on tap were ok. Nothing really stood out to me. They were not bad but not very impressive. I ordered a burger along with my flight and that was really good. The burger left a better impression on me than the beers. Overall, I liked this place. The rating is more of a reflection on HK local beers than the establishment. Came here on a Saturday afternoon around 2PM. A small place that has good decor as a beer pub. Having paid $280 HKD ($36 USD) for 8 sample beers was quite steep. Breweries in HK have grown since 2 decades ago, but they are still in their infancy. Asian beers have been traditionally "light" tasting (e.g., Sapporo, Tsingtao, Tiger, Taiwan Beer, etc). These local HK beers reflect that taste as well. With my tastes accustomed to IPAs and ambers in the US, all beers here tasted light in terms of flavor and intensity. I rated each beer individually on Untappd app (alias Zuminous). However, no beer was rated higher than a 2.75 out of 5. Wifey and I each got the 4 beer sampler so we tasted 8 different beers. My "favorites" were Gweilo's Pale Ale, Lion Rock Brewery's Grandmaestro, and Black Kite IPA. All rated at 2.75. Although disappointed, I should curb my expectations that HK beers still have a long ways to go. Overall, I give 2 stars for HK beers. The best thing here was actually the food. We ordered the Currywurst: bratwurst with fries. As a snack, this totally fulfilled us. 4 stars! Spending $50 USD on 8 sample beers and an appetizer was definitely expensive. It was a good learning experience, but one that I won't want to have again anytime soon. read more

Looking for craft beer in Tsim Sha Tsi, we quickly honed in on Kowloon Taproom. The bar was packed - but not too uncomfortable - and the menu was loaded with local beers on draft and in bottles. I loved all the beer posters on the wooden walls, making the bar seem a little more dive-y but still serious about beer. I always dig a place with a flights option, which was great for trying a lot of the local beers. In retrospect, they didn't really have any local beers I couldn't find at other places, but this was an easy way to taste the goodies. Kowloon Taproom provides you with a really nice bar feel and good selection of local and more international selection of beers. Of course it cannot compare to many tap rooms in America, but here in Hong Kong Kowloon Taproom is the standard. While each 16 ounce of beer costs roughly $10 American dollars, the price point is pretty on spot with all other bars and lounges around town. The facility itself is tucked away at the end of a dead end street, so it may be a bit of a venture to find. I had a ginger flavored one that was really strong on the ginger flavor, it was good. I also had a sweeter one called the hangry donut. Kowloon Taproom is nearby the hotel I'm staying in Tsim Sha Tsui. This taproom has all locally brewed Hong Kong beers with 16 different taps. The atmosphere is relaxing, solid music playing, and nice ambiance. This taproom provides a nice break from the muggy heat outside with refreshing beers. I was able to try the following beers; 1. Hong Kong Whistle Ginger Candy Porter: it goes down very easy, nice smoothness. You can taste the sweet ginger flavor halfway into the beer. I would have it again. 2. Heroes Beer Co Jasmine Summer Ale: mildly hoppy beer with a nice refreshing flavor for the summer heat. You can faintly taste the Jasmine tea flavor. read more

I'd really like to support the craft brew movement in Hong Kong. After finding about about the Kowloon Taproom, I was very excited to sample some local brews. Tried the GweiLo and Moonzen's Jade Emperor IPA. Both were quite mediocre. At an average of 80 HKD, not cheap either. I don't mind paying for good ales. But the price and quality were incommensurate. Too bad. Good service though. Drunk ex-pats singing to Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" and being generally obnoxious. Great location and easy to find. Small, open air venue in a cul-de-sac. It was a busy Sunday afternoon but only a handful of people inside. There was about 12 beers on tap and 20+ in cans or bottles.
