So we could barely see anything but we thought it's ok we're just gonna enjoy the drinks and foods. Well it turned out the view already was the best part of the night. We ordered 4 cocktails and only 1 was good. We didn't finish the other 3 because they just tasted horrible. My advice is just get something simple like gin and tonic or coke and rum. Their own signature cocktails were a waste of money. We also ordered fries and fried chicken which were overcooked. They were probably left in the fryer for too long. The wagyu beef slider was actually quite delicious but hey we paid $180 for 1 slider it'd better be good. Overall it was a very disappointing experience. I don't think I would come back again..

I like to go there around midnight to easily get a seat (though let's be honest after a few cold ones I'll have inevitably abandoned it to go join the hoards of drunk people gyrating to "Sex is on Fire" by Kings of Leon). You see, Amazonia isn't just any bar, but one of the many Filipino girly bars within the seedy Wanchai scene. I only realized this after noticing that while bopping my head to some Aerosmith / Journey covers that I was the only dude sitting alone and then after 8pm, a swarm of pinays came in and with that a steady crowd of middle aged white guys came creeping in. It's a scene that's been played out throughout Asian bars throughout the Southeast, but I was staring at it right in the face. From a bystander's point of view, the place is big enough to merit all sorts of gatherings. There is a legitimate stage for serious band action and lots of comfy seats that create a loungey presence much more so than a dive bar one. Colors here are primarily red and black, which perfectly mimics any sort of red light district vibe. The bartenders enjoyed my company. My drinks stayed at regular prices where I noticed a slight uptick for some of the other patrons looking to buy gals everything from beer to mildly potent cocktails, emphasis on the mild. Amazonia stays open late every night, just beware of the calm before the storm which tends to occur right around 7-8pm. Come for the drinks and stay for the music. For those not looking for beautiful babes, it's a place to get hot, sweaty, drunk and rock the night out. It's a great venue, that's dark and dingy, with lots of nocks and crannies to hide in. The sort of place where you should never go during the day, in case you see the state of the seats that you have been sitting in the night before. Having said that though, even during the day, it seems to be dark inside (despite the open bar frontage). The venue seems to suck in light like a black hole. However, what this bar offers, is a great dive atmosphere to drown your sorrows or celebrate your happiness. The drinks are pretty much to be expected in any Wan Chai bar, beers, wines, spirits, that's about it. I don't know if there is food, as I have never eaten there, nor seen anyone else eat there. In the evenings, there is table service (or standing service). The waitresses identify themselves with LED light badges and will take your orders and bring you drinks. This is useful, because walking around in the dark to find the bar could result in injury, and it gets rocking busy, so any excuse to avoid squeezing through the crowds to the bar is a good thing. What Amazonia is really known for is the pumping live music, that goes from 8pm to 6am every night. They have a great Filipino band that just never seems to stop betweens songs or sets. With the relentless noise, don't expect to come here for a conversation, just let the noise roll over you as you sip your drink or dance on the makeshift space at the front of the stage. It's actually an ideal place it you don't have anything to say to whoever your there with. Happy hour is opening to 9pm. Sports is played on the screens around the bar.

There are average you-can't-even-remember-the-name bars on Yiu Wah Street. The Sky Bar is a mix of everything and but being unique on its own too. It's in Lee Theatre Plaza. Pretty decent if you compare to Tang Lung Street (sans Mid-Town), Yiu Wah Street or Henry House. So even though they offer dart machines and pool table, it still attracts quite some nice and decent crowd. Big screens for sports. Apparently they have EPL broadcasting live, so another vibe to the mix during Saturday night I'd imagine (but hold on to your thoughts about coming here for late matches). Now the food was actually pretty good, which was rare for a bar in HK as well. Both the cheese mushroom and cheese escargot were well made. Pool table is free. You just need to tell the guys playing that you'd like to play the next round. There's a small private room too, with its own dart machine and the table is apparently made to play beer pong. Two small things though - (1) when I asked for a shot (yes it happens quite often lately...), they didn't seem to have shooter glass and poured me on a whiskey glass instead. Couldn't complain at all to have a big shot of tequila, but gosh, it tasted like the cheapest kind of tequila only college students would buy from 7-11. (2) It originally states it opens till 1am. It was more like 12 midnight, and last (drink) order at 11:30pm. So if you want to chill late night in Causeway Bay, make sure you have a backup plan. (And hence, no late night football here). Both were completely decent, not too cloyingly sweet nor skimping on the alcohol. What I really appreciated was the view. I'm a view lover and this one shows a sweeping swath of Causeway Bay, Happy Valley, and out to Wan Chai on one side and North Point on the other. Despite the flashing lights of the CWB billboards right overhead, or perhaps because of them, it feels like it's floating in the middle of that darkly urban cityscape that typifies so much of HK. If you throw in the bars with good view, either from inside a tall building, or an outdoor podium, you'll have Aqua, Felix, Cafe Grey, Red @ IFC, Armani/Prive, Hooray, etc. There are certainly more than enough for you to choose from. This bar has everything they promise, and nothing more than that. They have a 270 degree view from the HK side, overseeing North Point to Happy Valley, with the whole Kowloon under your view. It is nothing less of amazing. It is a rooftop, as promised too, which you'll see a massive billboard behind you, written "MIDTOWN", which is the name of this new building. It is a bar, it gives you alcohol. It's "by Harlan Goldstein", too, just like the Penthouse right down stairs. But don't expect more than that. It doesn't have DJ or live band here, nor proper washroom - you have to go back downstairs. The rooftop is rather big, but tables and seats are only filled half of it, probably because they don't have the personnel or infrastructure to serve the whole floor yet. And they are interesting lack of a good crowd - there are empty tables always available. I can't imagine any of those rooftop bars I mentioned above would be less busy than a full house, but hey, if I can have the view all by my own and not have to fight for it, I'm definitely not complaining. All in all, it is a very new bar, so everything is still developing, including the crowd. I'm sure it will get busier soon. We ordered a bottle of wine among three of us, which on the higher end of a standard "Causeway Bay" price tag, but I guess you have to pay for the "Goldstein premium" here.

More cons: "membership" only (although it's like $20 a month, or you can tell the server that the friend of yours who is a member "is coming"). It closes relatively early to other bars, and also it lacks of other entertainment (darts, pools, etc.). But surely you can go to their professional pool room if you are keen. This restaurant is related to Mak's Beer, a well known local micro-brewery, which doesn't have a taproom at its facility. I was looking to try some of their beers, but when I ordered a flight, the waiter came back to inform me that of the four I picked off the list, 3 were actually not on tap. He proceeded to give me a revised beer list with many items crossed off. Needless to say that's somewhat disappointing. I would have given this a 3, but the staff is really nice, he happily went back and forth to bring me samples to try. I also like the decor. With a wide open entrance, the place is bright, airy and inviting. I won't mind being back to enjoy some beer with food, hopefully by then this relatively new establishment has a better handle of things.
