Not many people are so familiar with Belgian food, but it's actually quite good. Most will probably be more familiar with Belgian beer, now this is where they have mastered a craft! Frites reminds me a great deal of this small chain of Belgian restaurants in London - anyone who knows London will know what I am talking about. It is basically a beer hall which has hundreds of beers available, that also serves really traditional Belgian food. To start with the beers, quite frankly to many to name. However, Frites stock a range from the more known beers like Duvell, through to fruit lambics made by silent order monks. You can definitely get a good education in Belgian beers at Frites, but may have to do it over a number of visits! What better to go with yummy beer, but yummy food. The big things here is the "moules et frites" or mussels and chips. The mussels are steamed in a variety of marinades, like tomato, cream, white wine, and come in one kilo pots. Great for me, as I have a big appetite, but also enough to share. With the mussels comes the "frites", which are great double fried Belgian style fries. So tasty dipped in the mussel marinade, or with lashings of mayo. Other treats include meaty delights like "good wife sausage", which is basically a massive sausage with veggies, a huge Aussie style burger (I call it Aussie style because it has beetroot in it), and pork knuckle. Now the pork knuckle, oh yeah! It's just like crispy patas, but just made better, and served with mashed potatoes, so good. The venue in Brim 24 is fine. The dining hall is open and high ceilinged, with big bench tables, so it does get really noisy with the sound rattling around the tall space. It does get busy, so make sure you book for busy times. The staff are generally ok, they can be a bit blinkered and snippy, but take a breath, sip your beer, and try again. Last word of advice, avoid the chocolate pudding, it is really hit and miss. It is sometimes lovely, and other times tastes like detergent.
Marketed as a trendy, Belgian restaurant, this place definitely takes you out of the usual Chinese feel of Hong Kong. My coworkers and I have a tradition of coming here to spend our hard earned money on pricy food. On one occasion I simply ordered an appetizer: I tried steak tartare for the first time here, and became a fan. Being the opportunistic people that we are however, our main draw to this place are its daily special discounts. My first time dining here was on Wagyu Wednesday, an awesome discount for getting the Wagyu burger on a Wednesday. Mussels Monday (all-you-can-eat mussels of different flavors, on a Monday) is my most recent Frites endeavor. Be careful with mussels, especially if they're all-you-can-eat. In my childhood I had read about the dangers of eating bad mussels (mussels that don't open after cooking), but I mostly ignored them this time around and faced the repercussions the next day. It wasn't too bad for me, but I am taking a break from mussels for a bit. The Laksa Mussels were notably delicious. My coworker and I were particularly interested in the unlimited steak offer they had for the weekend, named "Strip Night". We wanted to challenge ourselves to getting our money's worth of meat, and possibly risked developing heart disease in the process, but in the end it was well worth the experience. As with any all-you-can-eat situation, the more food that we had already eaten, the less active the service staff were in trying to help us, i.e. they often stopped looking in our general direction, pretending to not see us. I understand their tactics: I am also always looking to save money, which is why I came to their all-you-can-eat deal nights. I still got what I wanted, as there is no time limit per se (except during the period of time in Hong Kong when dining-in was banned after 6PM). The steaks were delicious, and I was able to experiment with eating different cooking temperatures of steak. No more well done steaks for me! read more
Ever since Hong Kong's colonial days, Western foods have had their dominant presence in the food scenes in the financial and tourist districts, such as the Central District, Wanchai, Causeway Bay and Tsim Tsa Tsui (TST). They cater to locals and tourists, as well as the constantly growing expat population. So I was not one bit surprised when I saw a Belgian restaurant in the food section of Causeway Centre, across from the Wanchai Ferry Pier and next to the Sun Hung Kai Financial Building. It's a somewhat trendy place with an European ambience, and upon entering, I found that the language spoken by the receptionists and servers was English and not Chinese. (For those of you who have never been to HK or China, this means that your wallet will be emptied but your stomach will not be full.) Set lunches with their at best mediocre selections run about USD30, which is pretty steep even in the expensive financial districts in HK. If you want to order a la carte, items are around USD 30 - 40, although steak frites will set you back about $50. Bear in mind that this is not upscale as in Morton's or Ruth Chris. This is more like a Yard House kind of place. SCHNITZEL AND FRITES: It's a popular European dish which is a thin pork cutlet that is tenderized, coated with bread crumbs and deep fried. The bread crumb coating ewas light and crispy; the meat was tender, flavorful and yummy. The frites (fries in English) were less impressive though. There were literally numerous Belgian Fries stalls, carts, and kiosks wherever we went when we were in Brussels and we loved Belgian fries. The most distinct difference is that the potatoes are not soft and starchy, and they are fried twice. Sorry... but the fries here tasted nowhere near those in the streets of Brussels. THE GOOD WIFE SAUSAGE: It was an interesting looking sausage that was in the form of a coil. Although I've tried various sausages in Brussels, I never had the opportunity to taste this particular variation. It looked and tasted like a "Boudin" sausage which is typically made with pork and is lighter in color. I liked the texture and its taste; and if you are an European sausage fan, you'll probably like this. The gravy was tasty with a strong aroma of onion, but I was hoping for a rich gravy with an authentic Flemish dark beer flavor. The mash was good, but nothing to write home about, especially at these prices. read more
Came here in search of a quick dinner after checking out ArtBasel 2015. First, I was quite happy to find a upper level platform bar, I'm still excited about Hong Kong having multiple levels [you think after 2 weeks I would be used to this]. I came on a Tuesday around 6 pm, smack in the middle of happy hour. What better way to wash down some art with a good Belgian Beer and some fries so Frites! was definitely a winner for me. The place was not crowded at all this Tuesday so I quickly found a seat at the Bar and a friendly Bartender to serve me up one of the half-off draft specials. [Drinking Leffe Blonde] I wasn't terrifyingly hungry so most of this review will be about decor. The place is mid sized with benches for 2-6 people on the patio and about 3 rows of 4 seaters inside. This is definitely a place to bring a group of friends. The bar is stoked with all authentic Belgians beers that will not disappoint, especially if you are looking to drink a 24 oz Hoegaarden. [;)]. If you're looking for specialty beer, there are many more in bottles you can choose from. [My sure choice is always the Delirium Tremens]. The decorations are simple, lots of wood from the tables to the trim on the ceiling. To go with my beer I ordered from the snack menu, which is separate from the regular one and my eyes just rested on the gouda balls. As a cheese girl, I cannot pass on a treat like this. I was incredibly happy with them. The right amount of melted with an actually light breading and butter pickles on top. Beyond happy. I could have eaten three portions of these if the 5 of them had not filled me right up. Altogether, I was very happy with this quick european bite and was pretty excited to get a yelp check-in badge for St. Patrick's Day on top of that. Will come again. read more

I came here alone to have my dinner and not surprisingly, Frites is very busy to serving people. Before I came back to Hongkong to visit my sister , my professor told me that I must go to Frites to try its"mussel", then I am here now. Belgian beer, undoubtedly , is world-class......"mussel" and Palm , was my dinner on that evening.... Going to have dinner again is a must! read more
