The crew partitioned off their work area at each stage of the renovation and were careful to clean up each day in order to keep the inevitable mess to a minimum. Everyone - from the owner Lorraine, to our designer/project manager Shannon, the foreman Carlos and all the tradesmen, were so easy to work with! The project was done on time, even with a few small changes. The work was neat throughout the project and even on demo days, the path from the front door to the bathroom was always clean. At no point did it ever look like a "construction zone" outside of the bathroom. They do quality work for fair prices, there was no nickel & diming or "gotchas", they kept us informed all along the way and were responsive to any questions/concerns. I had a picture in mind of what I wanted so didn't need full design services, but wherever I wasn't sure or couldn't decide on paint/tile/patterns/placement or just needed to bounce ideas with someone with a designer's eye, Shannon was right there with excellent input and we absolutely love the result across the board! From the start, Tile Center made this piece of our process easy and pleasant, and we love the outcome. As project manager, Joe was incredibly helpful and easy to communicate with. He came to our house very quickly after our initial outreach, returned later with grout samples, and walked us through options at the showroom. He always responded quickly to emails and texts. He helped us navigate tile shortages and advised us when we needed to order from a third party. Thomas, the installer, was also fantastic. His work is beautiful, and on top of that, he was just incredibly lovely to be around. He not only tolerated, but was awesomely kind to, our very loud and unhelpful dog! He also went above and beyond dealing with various issues that arose. James, who came on one of the days, was also great. On top of everything else, we really appreciated how both Joe and Thomas worked things out so that we could live in the house throughout the installation. That was really helpful as far as both hassle and the potential extra cost of lodging. We got porcelain wood-look tiles, and we really like the outcome (see picture). 100% recommend.

And we were told the pricing was only good that day, but they'd give us till Wednesday (5 days later). We asked for detail on the costs for the items in the proposal and were told no, they don't provide that. Renken was the second of three firms we met with. Firm #1 provided a breakdown and Firm #3 who we met with today, said they would do so. Also, their payment structure gives them 2/3 of the total fee by the time they do measurements? Good grief. Choose another firm! ***UPDATE*** Imagine my surprise when I got a call today (June 19) from Brent Renkin who called to literally berate me for using this platform to give a one-star review. He told me one-star reviews hurt businesses. He questioned how I could give such a review. The only point of clarification that he offered was that their pre-discounted rate is good for a year, but the discounts are only in place for five days "because of fluctuations in costs." He did confirm they don't break down their pricing in any way, including labor versus materials; said that's their process. As he continued pressing me about my review, also suggesting maybe I didn't understand everything? Toward the end of the call, he talked over me so much that I ended the call to stop the tirade I was being subject to. Seriously, who wants to work with a firm like this?

All the work they've done has exceeded my expectations. Fernando is very knowledgeable, punctual, friendly, and respectful, and sets realistic expectations about the timeline of each project and what it will entail. As a young woman, I have had many negative experiences with other sexist contractors who assume that I lack enough knowledge in their field (electrical, plumbing, etc.) or that I have no common sense, and so they try to scam me or get away with poor quality work. It has been the opposite with Fernando. He takes the time to patiently and kindly answer every single one of my many questions, and explains things to me as many times as I need him to, always treating me like an equal. I have an old house, built in 1921, and in the decades before I owned it, it went through renovations that were not done well. This has meant that now every serious project in the house must be done carefully to ensure that it remains structurally sound and safe both in the short and long term. I only trust Fernando to do any work in the house at this point, because I regretted every other time I hired someone else. I appreciate so much that he always thinks about how to make the result even better than I asked for, and without me asking, cares enough to use his knowledge to come up with ways to make the best of this house that I love despite its limitations (e.g. building recessed shelves to maximize limited space). His prices are shockingly fair and he gives detailed invoices outlining his projected labor costs. If anything unforeseen comes up that might lead to increased costs, he immediately addresses it with you to discuss options and ensure you are comfortable with the outcome. His team cleans up after themselves and you can see that he treats his workers with respect. The projects he'd done for me include (but are not limited to): -Fixing a collapsed wall in the crawl space of my basement (it was so bad, you could see the roots of a tree from inside the house) and ensuring water could no longer leak into the house - Removing an old retaining wall and building a stunning brand new one - Replacing old floors with ceramic and vinyl ones - Building and painting a fence - Building a concrete walkway in my yard and fixing an old one - Fixing the flow of rainwater in my yard to protect the house from water damage - As well as less complex tasks like painting my interior walls And now, he is currently finishing my basement which is a very complex project given the limitations of the house, but I know it'll exceed my expectations as before. I am so thankful that Fernando and his team were recommended to me years ago and now I will continue to recommend him to everyone I know in the DMV.

But their painting oversprayed onto a lot of our personal belongings and there were quality issues. The painted cabinets were very poorly done and an incorrectly installed toilet led to a leak and significant water damage to multiple levels of our home. I reached out to John to resolve this on our own but he has been unresponsive. Pay the extra money and hire REAL contractors!
