Fernando from BBC Construction is - by far - the best contractor I have ever worked with in the 12 years I've lived in DC. This company is honestly the only one that hasn't let me down. All the work they've done has exceeded my expectations. Fernando is very knowledgeable, punctual, friendly, and respectful, and sets realistic expectations about the timeline of each project and what it will entail. As a young woman, I have had many negative experiences with other sexist contractors who assume that I lack enough knowledge in their field (electrical, plumbing, etc.) or that I have no common sense, and so they try to scam me or get away with poor quality work. It has been the opposite with Fernando. He takes the time to patiently and kindly answer every single one of my many questions, and explains things to me as many times as I need him to, always treating me like an equal. I have an old house, built in 1921, and in the decades before I owned it, it went through renovations that were not done well. This has meant that now every serious project in the house must be done carefully to ensure that it remains structurally sound and safe both in the short and long term. I only trust Fernando to do any work in the house at this point, because I regretted every other time I hired someone else. I appreciate so much that he always thinks about how to make the result even better than I asked for, and without me asking, cares enough to use his knowledge to come up with ways to make the best of this house that I love despite its limitations (e.g. building recessed shelves to maximize limited space). His prices are shockingly fair and he gives detailed invoices outlining his projected labor costs. If anything unforeseen comes up that might lead to increased costs, he immediately addresses it with you to discuss options and ensure you are comfortable with the outcome. His team cleans up after themselves and you can see that he treats his workers with respect. The projects he'd done for me include (but are not limited to): -Fixing a collapsed wall in the crawl space of my basement (it was so bad, you could see the roots of a tree from inside the house) and ensuring water could no longer leak into the house - Removing an old retaining wall and building a stunning brand new one - Replacing old floors with ceramic and vinyl ones - Building and painting a fence - Building a concrete walkway in my yard and fixing an old one - Fixing the flow of rainwater in my yard to protect the house from water damage - As well as less complex tasks like painting my interior walls And now, he is currently finishing my basement which is a very complex project given the limitations of the house, but I know it'll exceed my expectations as before. Honest, Reliable, and Quality Work! I am very impressed with Fernando and his team. I was in need of replacing a vanity sink in one of my bathrooms and some roofing handyman services. I had been putting off the work for months and even considered doing it myself because the estimates that I received from other contractors were ridiculously high and super-inflated. Also, the other contracting companies either seemed disinterested in smaller jobs, not trustworthy, or left me with reservations and not a good feeling overall in having them do the work. He listened attentively, was not pushy and seemed eager to help. Nor, did I feel like Fernando was annoyed by my slue of questions. And, believe me there were many.....He patiently listened and answered every question. 2) Attention to Detail -- Fernando did a great job at assessing the work needed to be done and provided a fair estimate of the cost. After my previous review, the owner of BBC reached out to me directly and informed me that as a team, their company discussed the review I left and collectively decided that they're going to do whatever it takes to fix the problem--no questions asked. The next week the BBC team descended on my house and addressed all of the write-ups in one day. Without any additional cost. I also noticed that Fernando Tamara also displayed signs that he took the negative comments I cited earlier to heart. ::::Initiative:::: He actually coordinated an HVAC/Mechanical tech to come out and perform the fix, and worked with them to ensure the job was done--a departure from my previous experience with this type of arrangement. ::::Organization:::::: I was informed at least 72 hours in advance of a final inspection, instead of the night before or the day of ::::Communication:::: Discussed all possible solutions to the problem before doing any work giving me an option a,b, or c and the pro's and con's for each...but more importantly he executed the agreed upon plan without any unplanned changes to design or concept without my prior approval. Also arrived two hours early for final inspection. I'm not sure if he was just minding his P's and Q's with me because I pulled his card in person and online--but I did notice that Fernando did improve in the areas that I had addressed with him in person and in my previous review--hopefully Fernando can see the value in that advice in order to continue to have success with the customer base. I also learned how to be a better customer as well by being slower to anger--and I know I pushed their tolerance to extreme limits--but I have to ensure that my home is safe for my family at all costs. All in all, even though it didn't have to get to this point, I'm satisfied and I'm glad and recognize that BBC Construction is a company that really does value their customers and actually WANTS to do a good job. Furthermore they can also admit to when they don't meet those expectations and work to resolve it--if the customer is willing to give them a chance. I also was glad to hear that they discuss problems internally as a team and work together to reach amicable resolutions. Fernando Tamara of BBC Construction and my County Inspector just left my home, and I'm happy to report that we've finally passed our final inspection and our home is officially safe and sound. These guys did a great job. We were getting a dishwasher installed in a new house that didn't have one, so we needed someone to tear out a cabinet. The BBC Construction team communicated with me effectively as I arranged with the company selling and delivering the dishwasher, and then did the modification and installation quickly and effectively. As a bonus, we also happened to have water leaking from our ceiling that day, so Fernando took a look at it for me and discovered...someone in our family (who will remain nameless) hadn't been closing the shower curtain properly. If you are a little obsessed with having things be perfect, then be wary of most generic 5 star reviews on contractors. Most customers are very happy with a very average job and do not go around double checking their contractor's work with a laser level. And of the few freaks who do, most do not have a cow about seeing things a degree off axis or unevenly spaced by fractions of an inch. I am not most people. Here is my honest assessment on their work. Work performed: Demolished bathroom floor & wall tile; installed new porcelain floor & glass wall tile. Lots of contractors had no experience with large format glass tiles. Price quote: Somewhat higher than their competitor Executive summary: Fernando, who estimated and managed the project, has lots of experience putting up tiles and common issues that lesser experienced contractors might normally face. This got me the results I wanted. Minute details of what I liked, for those who want to nerd out with me on this topic: Fernando knows the capabilities of his team and plans out details in a way that will get you the result you want. For example: 1) Fernando recommended a 3/8" grout gap between my tiles. This is a relatively large gap. Obviously smaller gaps look cleaner. However, the benefits of a large gap are that small deviations of +/- 1/16" are not easily perceptible. Unless you are willing to spend 3x on labor to lay tiles to extreme tolerances (not easy when each tile is 12x24" and very heavy), you are going to have a bad time if you ask for thin grout lines, and the tiler does not install them with robotic precision. End result - very good looking consistent tiles. If you go in and measure the gaps, sure, you will see a maximum deviation of up to 1/8" in some grout gaps, but I am convinced it is impossible to do any better than that without adding more man-hours to the job (i.e., dollars & time). Most other contractors who saw that I had tiles with very little tolerance (i.e., very consistent size) said I could go with a 1/8" gap. I actually went with another contractor and followed their advice in another bathroom of my home, and it ended up terrible. When your gap is 1/8", then even tiny deviations of +/- 1/16" will result in grout lines that are 1x-3x different in width. I will be posting a review of one of these contractors as well shortly. 2) Fernando was adamant about the time required to complete this job, and it was approximately twice as many days as his competition. I appreciated that he built in some slack in his schedule to deal with unforseen issues. His team completed the work on time. For my second bathroom, I decided not to go with Fernando at BBC and went with a competitor based on price. I saved maybe $300 and regretted it. I should have just hired BBC again. read more

4.5 stars. Full disclosure - I'm writing this review on my mom's behalf. When she started looking into a kitchen renovation, I started looking into kitchen contractors on Yelp. I searched highly-rated PG County-based contractors and found BBC Construction & Remodeling. I'll start by saying Fernando and team did a beautiful job on mom's kitchen and finished on the EXACT date that he'd estimated before starting the job (approx. 4.5 weeks). Fernando was very patient throughout the process. After his original estimate, he came to meet with mom, my sister, bro-in-law and I to answer all of our questions about the renovation. Fernando also gave my mom some great suggestions on how to improve the overall polish of the finished kitchen (such as adding pot lights and choosing beautiful and affordable marble countertops). The team gutted the original (but refaced) 1940s kitchen, including taking down a bunch of soffits and rearranging the kitchen into a much better flow. Mom's eat-in kitchen is cozy, but the renovations have given her significantly more counter space and tons more cabinet space. Reasons that I bumped down his rating .5 star: 1) there were times during the renovation when he wasn't super clear about the scheduling of when his team would be a my mom's house. She wasn't comfortable giving them a key to her house (which is his preferred setup), which meant that he had to tell her what days he'd be coming by. However, they didn't always show on the days that they said they would. In the end, this didn't end up being a big deal because, as I mentioned, they finished the job on time. But this did up the frustration level of my mom, a retiree who likes to sleep in late :) On the days she thought they were coming, she'd get up early to let them in, so if they didn't show, she'd be cranky for the rest of the day. 2) The final costs were a couple hundred dollars above the agreed upon estimate. This was largely due to upgrades that Fernando recommended mid-job that mom had originally turned down. For example, he suggested pot lights instead of a florescent light fixture. While I agree that it looks MUCH better with the pot lights, to mom, it started to seem like expenses were adding up, which in turn upped her anxiety level. What can I say - renovations can be stressful. All in all, I'd HIGHLY RECOMMEND Fernando and his crew any day. They did a great job. Fernando and his crew did a complete kitchen gut job and renovation right after we purchased our first home. The floor joists, flooring, walls, cabinets, counters, and most appliances were replaced. We also had electrical and plumbing work done with Fernando. I highly recommend his services - the cost was reasonable, he is very reliable, and he puts his client first, no matter what! Fernando was very patient and understanding about getting permits for our work from PG county and together we got it all taken care of, after a couple of weeks of gut-wrenching bureaucratic messiness. After demolition, the work proceeded with the installation of porcelain tile, putting up brand new drywall, the trim, the painting, installing the cabinets, replacing a window, installing the appliances, coordinating plumbing and electrical work, etc. We had a water line added to the fridge as well as the gas line moved to accommodate a change in stove location. Fernando also came up with a great idea for handling the dead space in the corner of the kitchen where the entrance to the cellar is. We ordered an extra cabinet and they used the door to create a dummy cabinet and counter in the corner so we have some more counter space and the kitchen looks contiguous. Fernando has a great eye for aesthetics and cared a lot about making sure we were comfortable, happy, and taken care of. Although our work took longer because of permit problems and the floor needed to be completely rebuilt, Fernando saw the work through all the way to the end, through all of the tough stuff, and kept our happiness his #1 priority the entire time. Discovered a leak in our ground floor ceiling. Also had a toilet that wasn't seated correctly, as well as front fascia that was rotting. I've used Fernando and BBC Construction in the past with good service. This time was different as we had a death in the family and needed the work done quickly so we could head out of town. Fernando gave us an estimate on one business day, came out the next business day and completed all the work in less than 8 hours. Work included re-seating a toilet, ripping out the wet ceiling dry wall, repairing the leak, ceiling repair/plaster/paint, and replacing rotting exterior plywood fascia with more a more durable product and patched/painted. We had a shower back-up a few weeks into the COVID-19 pandemic and called around for estimates which were in the $500-$750 range. BBC Construction was able to come same-day and easily resolve the issue for less than 1/3 of the price of another company that looked at the issue, in addition to offering a month's warrentee for the fix. BBC Construction was a waste of my time. BBC Construction came over to my house this morning to give me an estimate for some work I need done. I told the guy I needed the kitchen redone, the entire house painted, and some repairs on my stair banister and wooden floors. The guy told me those were three separate jobs: (1) painting, (2) kitchen, and (3) wood work. I told him I needed it all done as soon as possible, so as far as I was concerned, it was one job. But he said I had to prioritize because those were three separate jobs. I said, whatever, give me the estimate for the work. He asked which "job" I wanted done first. I played along with his little game, and I said the painting. He said he would email me a written estimate for the painting. I also asked for a written estimate for the kitchen and the floor/banister repairs. He gave me a partial verbal estimate. I told him again, send me a written estimate for all the work. He said he would only develop a written estimate for the next job after the first job was done. That makes absolutely no f'ing sense, UNLESS... the guy gets paid a commission PER JOB. So he wanted to break the work into three jobs. He said he would send me the painting estimate, and I told him, don't worry, you don't need to send me anything. What a joke. read more

Fantastic Experience! This was my second project with Fernando- I asked him to change an existing walk-in shower to a bathtub. I provided all of the materials and he provided the very professional and artistic labor. The end results was a new bathtub with beautifully tiled walls, including some embedded trim pieces. It only took 1.5 weeks and the tradesman were all very respectful of my house. They laid the appropriate amount of protection down and vacuumed every night before stopping for the day. They were careful to explain what they were doing during the entire process. They told me I needed to rip the bathtub out and install a brand new tub and piping altogether. Fernando looked around for less than 5 minutes, found the problem, and fixed everything in a matter of hours and for dirt cheap. There's no more leak and I didn't have to shell out $2,500 for a new shower like the other plumbers suggested. Fernando really saved me here. Climb Mount Kilimanjaro, hike the entire Appalachian Trail, hell you could even figure out the meaning of life, before ever getting a phone call back from this company. The project manager Fernando was not only an hour late than his assigned arrival time, he ACTUALLY walked out on us when we told him that we would like an estimate before sending over the insurance paperwork for our basement claim. Literally stopped talking, walked up our basement stairs, and out the front door. I've gotten the silent treatment before, but NEVER from a dude. The owner Biran was very kind enough to come by the following week and do a walk through, and get our hopes up that we might actually get a quote from them. Never received one. Turns out, that we had to take it upon ourselves to continuously contact them and re-send emails, just to be sidelined with the typical, "we will get back to you by Monday" line. Still have not received any response. All in all, this company was as useful as a fart in a high windstorm. read more

Fernando just saved me from a $335K mistake of a house. There were some looming questions after a home inspection on a house that I was under contract to purchase, and it was recommended I call in a contractor for estimates. Because of the tight schedule I had with the sale, I had 2 days in which to get someone to come give me an estimate for repairs. My agent recommended BBC, and after calling with them Fernando was able to come out the next evening. Within 15 minutes of being there, he identified several issues (that the inspector had also pointed out), and went down to the crawl space to look at some other issues I had questions on. Within a few minutes, he emerged with a detailed explanation of the issues and did not beat around the bush with telling me that I did not want this particular house due to some severe structural issues we had been questioning, and that the repairs would not be feasible. I appreciated his willingness to come out on short notice, his honesty and bluntness about the house. There was no rush, and he made sure that all of my questions and concerns were met. The work he did was exceptional, you seriously could not tell we ever had any roof issues. We also just hired them to come and paint our kitchen. They did a fantastic job, and I'm beyond happy with the finished product. Fernando provides accurate estimates (and he always lets us know ahead of time what the cost will be for additional work that's needed before moving forward). This team, Fernando, Antonio, Raul, they took pride in their work; took pictures when done. Great attention to detail. Were able to find molding to match the vintage type around an adjacent window to preserve the style. And all this despite Home Depot completely messing up on the inventory, and sending them to 3 locations. I felt for sure they would raise the price because of Home Depot's wild goose chase, and would not have objected really, but the final price only added the tiny cost of a little more molding from the quote (which I had approved during the installation after I saw what the options were to keep things looking symmetrical) . read more

Fernando repaired some holes in the drywall in my ceilings and walls. He and one of his colleagues really went above and beyond. They taught me how to match the paint and waited while I took a paint sample to the local hardware store to match. They painted a full wall, without charging extra, to make sure the repair doesn't show. When the ceiling repair showed a metal pipe collecting condensation, they added extra insulation to the pipe so the leak wouldn't reoccur. Definitely highly recommend them for quality of work, responsiveness, and price. read more

The next project for Fernando was to custom build a bar and built in bookshelves, and install crown moulding in our house, they did an amazing job, lots more usable space. We then contracted him to build a stairway from our rear deck down to the carport, this was done quicky and is now our primary entrance to our house. The jobs ranged from painting high traffic areas of the house and external trim, caulking windows, caulking the bathroom, and replacing rotted wood. The cost was not the cheapest or the most expensive, but was very reasonable. Of the three quotes received, Fernando was realistic and provided detailed explanations of the job and his approach. He listened to the customer's needs, and offered recommendations to minimize cost and still accomplish the job. The job itself was conducted in a very professional manner. Scheduling for an estimate wasn't as smooth as in the past but since I have worked with Fernando on other jobs before, I let it go and continued with getting the work done. He also cleaned the sink traps and caulked around the kitchen sink in a very professional way, applying a perfect thin bead. His pricing is fair and his workmanship is meticulous. We hired BBC to replace the shower in our shoddily constructed basement bathroom, which was leaking and spreading mold all over. We talked to a few contractors, some who seemed like they do certainly do the work, but I definitely couldn't afford them, and others who seemed like they'd be a sweet deal, but might actually have no idea how to build it right. As soon as Fernando came out to give his estimate I knew he was the Goldilocks solution - his prices are very reasonable for the work and he clearly knows his shit. What started as a (somewhat) simple shower replacement grew into something larger as things progressed, and it became clear that there were easy, inexpensive ways to make the bathroom larger and more ergonomic (like moving the toilet that had inexplicably been installed in the very middle of the bathroom, for instance). Each time there was an option like that, Fernando came to us and clearly explained the cost of the extra work, and asked if we wanted to include it - so it was always our choice, and the costs were always so reasonable that we always opted in. This was my first experience with a home remodeling project, so it took me a bit to get the hang of how things work - like that it was my job to select things like the shower stall, the bathroom tile, etc. But once I got the hang of it, it makes perfect sense and was a lot of fun. Before we started, Fernando told me we could make our bathroom, which looked like (was) a health hazard, a beautiful room. I told him I would settle for safe and functional. Now it is complete, it is safe and functional, AND honestly the most beautiful room in our house. This was my first experience with a home remodeling project and it was a really positive one. I'd recommend BBC for any home remodeling/ construction projects, and I'll certainly go back to them when we are ready for more upgrades to our very old house! read more

Brian and Fernando came by very shortly after I contacted them, and completed the work within days. Very responsive, polite and they did a terrific job repairing and replacing part of the kitchen sink cabinet under with severe water damage. I will definitely call them again. I contacted BBC Construction for a failing storm door that was pulling away from the wall. I sent pictures via text and Fernando contacted me to schedule an estimate for the next morning. Fernando and Brian assessed the situation, communicated what was needed to be done and gave a reasonable price. The door was reinstalled that same morning. They really did a fantastic job. Based on the five star rating I was excited to have some work done with this company. I made an appointment with them on a Saturday to meet the following Monday. On our appointment time, my real estate agent and I waited for him at the house for an hour. He did not call nor show up. I called and left him messages in an attempt to reschedule or at least figure out what happened and he did not answer my call nor call me back. My time is valuable and what he did was extremely unprofessional. His work might be good based on people's testimonies but I can only speak from my experience and it's important that people also know what I experienced. read more

This rating is based solely on our experience with Fernando as we did not end up working with BBC Construction after our experience. We contacted BBC based on the wonderful Yelp reviews and had hopes that they would help us make updates to our very tiny bathrooms. After a lot of email and phone tags, we finally were able to set up an appointment with Fernando. As excited as we were to get his perspective and expertise, he was not very helpful at all. My husband and I felt like he wasn't listening to anything we were saying. He kept trying to expand our bathrooms which if he paid attention -- was pretty much impossible and would have been VERY costly to just "expand" it by a few inches. We just wanted to update the look our our bathrooms. We both felt like he didn't want to take on the job based on his illogical recommendations and swift walk-through. He even had the audacity to mention how important it was for him to keep his perfect Yelp reviews. That comment was very unnecessary for what we were asking him to help us with. We both shook Fernando's hand and it was as we ALL knew that this would be the last time we would communicate. We were pretty disappointed with our experience and not sure why Fernando operated in such a negative disposition. Maybe he is used to his company working on huge houses in upscale neighborhoods. Or, maybe he felt like his time was wasted because we looked like a young couple who didn't have much money (which is NOT true). Who knows. read more
