Awesome meal this afternoon, our Date Night outing brings us here because Tucson Guide says they are the World Margarita Champions. Yeah, right? Well we're here to say these were the BEST margaritas we've ever had, even beating out my own homemade recipe. Dinner was Combo Plate and Fish Tacos. Excellent on both and pretty amazing frijoles. Drinks were the champion Sonoran Passion and Mango Tamarindo Margaritas. Oh yeah, we'll be back and we sure enjoyed this meal. read more

I heard about Nana's on Reddit and we are so glad we went! The margaritas are absolutely amazing, we got ours with chamoy (which they get made from a local sweets store) and tajin on the rims, the food is fresh and delicious and the owners are so nice! If you are looking for real homemade Mexican food, this is the place to go. The green corn tamales were one of the best ever! The birria has an amazing blend of flavors. If you like hot salsa, your tastebuds will be on fire! For dessert we tried the tres leches cake and the flan. My choice would be flan. Just today for dinner I took my son and his GF to Nanas For all the times that we have visited, tonight I wanted something light and different, so I ordered the shrimp cocktail. What an embarrassment to sonoran shrimp cocktails! For the size, the amount of shrimp was good, however the broth was Valentina hot sauce and water, no traces of Clamato, cucumbers, lemons or flavor. The worst part was that this dish had canned peas and carrots! The vegetables that we had at the junior high cafetería. There are no peas and carrots in any iteration of shrimp cocktails in all of Mexico. And I'm quite certain that Nanas will never used canned peas & carrots in her shrimp cocktails. She will be terribly knowing what the cooks and managers are allowing to happen in her kitchen. Do better. Do not rest on your laurels. A better Mexican restaurant is opening soon. read more

Review is based on the food. Service and ambiance could use some help. I visited Nana's because I heard they won the Margarita contest. I asked the waitress about the winning Margarita and she didn't know what was in it. After she asked found out it was prickly pear (good) and coconut (yuck for me) so I ordered a standard Margarita which tasted authentic and good. I also ordered the Taco Salad which had chucks of steak for meat. It wasn't huge but it also wasn't stuffed with fluff. It was enough to fill me up. The chips were good and she did ask if I wanted mild or hot salsa. The ambiance is just a square room with a bar. It could use some decorating help. read more

Nana's kitchen reminds me of the Mexican food I grew up on, and that is a wonderful memory. The restaurant is in a strip mall with plenty of parking and seating. The decorations are classic for a Mexican restaurant with some family photos, blankets and a large mural. They have a full bar and a a nice assortment of choices on the menu. They provide chips with a flavorful and spicy salsa for free. The salsa is slightly sweet with a deep chili flavor and a lingering heat. For our meal we ordered carne con papas en chili colorado and the flat enchiladas with the spicy red chili sauce. The sauces were both very flavorful with a little garlic and onion and acid. The chili Colorado was slightly a sweet and tasted a little like a Mexican BBQ and it worked perfectly with the beef and potatoes. The flat enchiladas had a slightly crispy masa patty covered in the ss sauce, tomatoes, lettuce, onion and green olives. It was delicious. The beans and rice that accompanied the dishes were also a surprise with the beans beinG nice and creamy with a deep bean flavor and the rice was a crispier form of Spanish rice that was also full of tomato flavor. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They were very busy but stayed attentive and were always available when needed. It all reminds Ed me of small town southern Arizona and definitely a place we will return. read more

We stopped in for lunch, freshly made tortillas, Great salsa. I had Chile relleno which was very good. The sauce was evenly spiced and delish. My granddaughter ordered flat enchiladas which were awesome! The tortillas were hand done and had a crunch to them. Absolutely awesome! Their coffee maker was not working so we had hot tea to go the extra mile. Definitely worth a return trip! read more

The person who waited on us was friendly and helpful, the bar seemed to be well stocked (we didn't get drinks at lunch), and the table space seemed more than adequate. But the downfall was the food. While the chips were very good, and the choice of mild or hotter salsa great, we found the rest of the food disappointing. The rice and refried beans were average, and it went downhill from there. The chicken enchiladas and chicken tortillas were just OK. The carne asada burrito was mediocre - the content was pretty average except for the meat, which was chewy and dry and rectangular (imagine chopping a cube in half, and getting two pieces of meat). Frankly, it was a disappointing experience. The staff was so friendly and helpful, and we wanted to like the place, but the food just wasn't great. read more

The service was very slow even though only two tables were being served. It was like they were ignoring us. The guy came over was very friendly but waitresses were walking past us to the other table. The food is only mediocre and very slow service. I think they are racist to old white guys. We will never go again. It's been that way last 2 times in there. read more

Wish I could say I liked this place better. Food was a 4/5, service was a 2/5. It was very busy which is understandable on a Friday night. It was pretty loud and felt a little too crowded. We got lucky for getting sat right away but service was very slow from there. Our server rushed us through ordering. They warned us that the kitchen was busy and they were right. We barely saw our server and she was clearly in a rush. Seemed like the staff knew a lot of the patrons and were interactive and friendly with some. There were some people seated around us that seemed to be vocal about their frustrations at the slow timing of everything. I found the food (cheese crisp and tortilla soup) to be very good and loved my tamarind margarita. The kids menu seems steep at $10 per but does come with a big portion size and a drink. A side of sour cream was $2 for my kid because they thought their tamale was too spicy. Won't be rushing to come back on a busy night but would try it again if it was less crowded at some point. read more

We made it before happy hour was over, but the waiter insisted that they have cheap drinks in general and would not give us the happy hour menu. The chips were cold as well as the food was when it was served. I didn't get my margarita until after our food was served. The tortillas for the cheese quesadilla looked a little questionable, but again the waiter insisted we were wrong. For the last year we have been trying to find a Mexican place that reminds us of what we used to get in California. Well I'm happy to say today we found it. This place is amazing! I had what they call a taco salad but I'm used to it being a tostada. I got it with no beans but with rice and shredded beef. The ratio of meat to the other stuff was fantastic. It had to be half meat. The meat had great flavor to it and was very tender, the rice had good flavor as well. Bobbie had a burrito with shredded beef and potatoes. Also had great flavor and a bit of heat as it was suggested she get it with the hot sauce and not the sweet. Good call as it wasn't to hot but just right but great flavor. We will be coming back, a bit of a drive for us but well worth it. read more

We came here passing through on a family road trip. Was drawn to this location from all the good reviews and award winning margaritas listed on their website. They looked busy possibly understaffed, but a man made us a table pretty quickly. After that however, downhill. We watched a large table that arrived after us get menus, then chips and salsa, then drink orders while we waited for someone to acknowledge our existence and bring menus. We eventually had to ask someone if we could have menus, and she snapped at us that a server will help us in a minute. Eventually, we got menus, chips etc. Good spicy salsa I will say. When I asked what margaritas they had, the server said "Cadillac and house." Hmmm. They don't serve margaritas advertised on their site? OK. Food came out and was...ok. My steak fajitas and my son's camarones rancheros were VERY salty. The final straws...when we received our bill, the server places it ON TOP OF MY WATER. Like I want countless hand germs on my cup lip. THEN, I checked the bill and we were charged for 3 ADDITIONAL margaritas and a soda we never ordered. A nearly $30 overcharge. Small family owned restaurant. Food is delicious and the servers treat you like family. The cook is the mother of two of the servers and you can definitely taste the love and care she put into each plate. Thai place has mariachis and events frequently so we will definitely be returning. We went here looking for a good, decently priced Mexican food place. We'd learned that the "hole in the wall" small places usually have some of the best food and good prices. My husband and youngest son, being red heads, can't deal well with spicy food, so we asked the wait staff about their food. She told us the red sauce was mild, so that was what we made our meal choices off of. My husband ordered a cheese enchilada, taco combo plate, which is his favorite from most places. My youngest got a burrito, and my oldest got tacos. I got an enchilada combo. The waitress was incorrect! The sauce is Very spicy, especially to someone who's spiciest food is Pace Picante mild. My husband could not finish his food. Mine was a bit spicy as well, but I don't mind that. We have definitely had better Mexican food! He did not appreciate the prices, especially considering the quality of the food, so we will not be going back there. read more

This was the first time my wife and I tried this place. I guess you can say we had high expectations based on the reviews. We were excited when we found this place because everywhere that we love to go there so far away. For example, another place we go that has Birria tacos is over 30 minutes away. I have nothing negative to say about the service. All of the employees were really professional, friendly, and helpful. The service was fast and I could tell that everybody was working very hard. Where I had to take stars away from my review was the quality of the food. The rice and beans were amazing and they were especially good with a complementary chips. I was not, however, impressed with the tacos. Unlike some of the other reviews, I do not feel that the Birria was juicy and tender. In my opinion it was dry and seemed more like a beef taco if anything. It was also really hard to enjoy my taco because the tortilla was falling apart. I don't feel that it was a homemade tortilla, rather, something I could buy at a local grocery store and heat up. Other than the complimentary chips and the rice and beans, I wasn't satisfied on this visit. My wife and I are willing to give this place another shot because maybe we just caught them on and off day. I want to be able to experience what some of the other reviews were describing. The food wasn't bad, but it also wasn't anything above average which is why I'm giving 3 stars. read more

We've been a few times, 3-4. Today was the first time since Covid. We walked in at 5 and there was one other table. When we left it was packed. The service was excellent. The food was great! We had Birria burritos, enchilada style. Mine, chipotle sauce, my friend, hot red sauce. The guacamole appetizer was delicious, and I'm particular. The Cadillac margs, the best. Good and fast service, we had high hopes for the margaritas, which were really not impressive. The Sonoran rose tasted like candle wax and if you try it you'll see what I mean. The tamarind was drinkable but not exciting. They let us trade out the Sonoran rose margarita for a Cadillac margarita which was nice of them. The food was okay, not a diverse crowd coming for dinner. Overall, we wont be coming back. We do appreciate them letting us change out our drink. read more

I am new to the area but not new to Mexican food! This food was very authentic. I had the Birria burrito and my daughter had Menudo. Very fresh and very full plate! Their salsa is awesome. I would normally give this restaurant five stars but their service was extremely lacking. It is a very casual atmosphere, which is nice. We were seated immediately. However, it was over five minutes before anyone else acknowledged us and we were about 30 seconds from leaving. The restaurant was only about a third full. A waiter finally took our order and it still took another three minutes and 30 seconds until we got chips and salsa. It took 25 minutes from the time we ordered until we got our food. The staff is very friendly once they start talking to you. You just have to have patience when you order! read more

The entire staff makes this scratch Mexican restaurant a must visit. The food is incredible and they are very flexible with dietary restrictions. The bar section is one of the best I've ever experienced! Marco is an amazing mixologist making so many varieties of margaritas. The liquor selection is what you'd expect at a 5 star restaurant. Javier and Nana are welcoming and always greet you with a smile and kind words. Sandra is my favorite server always making sure you have everything you desire. The ambiance is what you'd expect of an authentic Mexican restaurant. After a couple of visits it's like waking into Cheers where everybody knows your name. Most people say the best Mexican is in south Tucson; but this restaurant in Maraña has the best beans and rice I've ever had. Not only was there food top notch; but they went out of their way to cater a volunteer event I attended an hour and a half away on Mt. Lemmon.
