On my planned staycation to Fort Worth I wanted to try a small business to support. I was also craving a piece of HOT fried fish. I came across Nama's Kitchen ON YELP. We had the pleasure of meeting Nana herself. Me and my mom enjoyed speaking with her. She was pleasant and friendly. I loved how she was very down to earth. My mom took a photo with her. My server was the sweetest and most polite person. She checked on me and my mom multiple times. She was friendly and helpful. So I must say my service was welcoming and AMAZING! I felt like part of the family! Now it's not a fancy place, but it was clean and cozy. Like a mom and pops place. Condiments are provided on the table. Even roses that were real are in a vase. You can dine in or they have a carry out side. Well I chose fish since that's what I wanted. The 2 piece filet meal comes with 2 sides. They will bring your food out in a plastic container. So if you have left overs it's already set to go. The food came out hot and fresh. The fish was fried nicely. I wish it was seasoned a bit more for my liking. It was pretty good though. It was a great size and again fried to perfection. The hush puppies were really tasty. The fried corn fritter was delicious. The pickled tartar sauce was unique and I loved it. OMG the cabbage was so DAMN GOOD! This stole the show. It was cooked perfectly and seasoned with love. It touched my soul and I wanted to lick my container. The Mac and Cheese was a NO for me. It was like black pepper and cheese sauce. It was just blah and II didn't even eat it. However, others may like it, but it wasn't that great. Sorry Nana! Overall I had a good visit! Stopped by Nana's Kitchen during my MLK weekend trip to Fort Worth, and it was a soul food highlight! I got the two-piece catfish with sweet potatoes and mac & cheese--fish fried to crunchy perfection on the outside, juicy and full of flavor inside. My son loved his honey BBQ wing special with fries; the sauce had just the right sweet kick. The place sparkled with cleanliness--even the restroom smelled fresh like citrus. Bussers kept tables wiped down constantly, and the staff was super friendly, checking in to make sure we had everything. The "regulars" was then only one who received decent service and constant attention! 5/10 min wait just to get a menu, the waiter system is highly unorganized, you will sit down and Then have to find someone to take your order, then every waiter that at pass will ask you every 2 min if you have been helped, even had to wave someone down just to get a refill. I went to this place for the first & last time today. I ordered a salad with fruit. It took 25 minutes for it to arrive to the table. As I opened it the top was beautiful but as I started to eat the lettuce it was some sort of spring mix that was verrrrry old. Some leaves were yellow & green & some leaves were withered,black & extremely soggy with black fluid so that also means that the salad leaves failed to be washed by kitchen staff. I was just sick to my stomach. Now I know why they ask you to pay first before receiving their uncleansed filth they are currently serving human beings. From entrance to exit it was an awesome experience. I was there with a friend to order a "to go" meal and stayed so long talking to my friend that Nana asked my name, I told her and she said she had called my name several times and my order had been ready. The shrimp was cold, fish was okay but I've had better. The greens were ok but had better. Fries were supposed to be the crinkle cut and they were shoestring. Asked for plain water..received water with lemon. The cake was not fresh. My two girlfriends food was terrible too..they ordered the meatloaf and baked chicken and it was not very tasty. The baked chicken was overcooked and the meatloaf was too thick and not tasty. You wait in your car & they'll bring it out to you. You get 2 sides with every entree. I got the 2 piece fried fish with mashed potatoes (you can choose white gravy or brown) and green beans, comes with cornbread and 2 sauces. the total came out to be around $21. Loved to support small businesses so we thought we would check out Nana's Kitchen. It was great! Hubby had the whole catfish with greens and green beans. I had the fried shrimp with Mac and cheese and greens. We also got 3 wings to try. Let me tell you that those greens are so good! They are full of garlic and have a kick! We are so many of them that we didn't get to the green beans. Hubby loved the catfish and I liked the shrimp too. The catfish was hot and fresh and seasoned well. The corn nuggets were really good too. Hubby liked the Mac and cheese and I believe it complimented the greens well. The wings were ok, but the catfish and greens were the hit of the meal. I have seen several recommendations for this restaurant but a visit requires a planned trip as it is so far away. Finally today I was able to visit and my impression is very mixed. The dishes that are good are good but the ones that aren't make you say "what the hell" out loud. You will order inside and wait in your car for it to be brought out. Plate 1: 1 smothered pork chop with cabbage and Mac and cheese. The pork chop was tender enough to cut with the plastic fork and knife. It is slightly under seasoned considering it is pork covered in gravy but can be corrected. It is served with too much gravy for the container provided so there was a lot of leakage that made the other plates messy. The cabbage is all the white pieces and no green but tender. The Mac and cheese should be considered a punishable offense - pale watery unseasoned. It leaked out of the container the same way the gravy from the pork chop did. Plate 2: 1 fried pork chop with greens and Mac and cheese. This pork chop was better seasoned. Greens appeared to be from a can but they did add additional season. Mac and cheese see above. Plate 3: lemon pepper wings (no fries). Best dish. It appears that these are full size wings that have been cut down so they are a good size. They were well seasoned and had the right amount of crunch. Dessert: lemon pound cake. I was worried thinking that the cake would be old but it was very moist and had the right amount of sweetness. The restaurant was clean and roomy. I was there with two others, we all ordered the same thing (one fish filet), however, two of our orders came out together and the other some 20 minutes later. My two sides were the greens and sweet potatoes with cornbread. The food was hot with the exception of the cornbread which was cold as ice and it was obvious it had been pull directly from the refrigerator. The fish was well seasoned and is cooked to order. The greens were good, but they don't tell you they are spicey and full of jalepenos (so if you dont like spicey food, this side is not for you). The sweet potatoes were not to my liking. The portion size is generous. The only drinks they serve is kool-aide, lemonade and water in a small 8 oz styrofoam cup. I got the lemonade and it was to sweet for my liking. I was spending sister time with my sis and wanted to support a BOB. Nana's came up on Yelp. We stopped on the day she was running a fish special . One fish filet, 3 shrimps , fries and Texas toast for $5z my sister ordered the special and i ordered a burger and fry because I fried fish myself the day before . Now mind you the burger and fry came out to $22. But I was like okay I will get it ... supporting the business . My sister said the fish tasted a little fishy but it still had a decent flavor . The hamburger however was the thing that really disappointed me. I lifted the burger which was burnt at the bottom. The bottom bun had so much grease in it that had I ate it I probably would have been sick. I sent the burger back. The young lady brings back the plate and stated that she was told to refund my money and it may take 7 to 10 business days . I then asked could my burger be remade. Her response was well I can ask . So my sister asked well sis what you going to eat... I guess I eat these shoe string fries. So my advice, if you are going to charge $22 for a burger and fry at least let me enjoy my burger . No way I would have served that to anyone . And even if it did not come out right , you could have remade my meal so I could have enjoyed my lunch as well . Not bringing me the food back . I prefer only dark meat and there was two pieces of thighs/legs! Friendly place with a good selection. I've probably eaten here about 4 times. I am however reluctant when placing my order over the phone. Because they require you to pay over the phone as well. Which means I have to provide my debit/credit card by phone. I recently placed an order by phone for the Cajun Fried Wings they sell Thursday, Friday and Saturday advertised on FB. I've partook in the fried catfish fillets and this bad boys shmack! Crispy and juicy. Those fillets were just as good- probably better than Ronnie's catfish. I had the macaroni and cheese along with the cabbage. Both were tasty and just good enough- nothing exceptional. The cornbread muffin was tiny- just a tad bit larger than the suspect hush puppies. Pass on all the breads- it ain't good for you anyway. You'll probably have to hangout in your car unless you call your order in. No fancy tables or waitresses.
