I decided to check out this hidden gem when I noticed the restaurant tucked between two apartment complexes. A little hard to spot as they blended in so well but it's a very cozy atmosphere! Staff is super friendly; the server attending us is kind, sweet and funny. I can tell she enjoys talking with the customers and ensuring we all have a good time. The food is alright; I really enjoyed the blackened salmon. Their fries are great and their entrees come with a side, I chose the soup. Our server provided us with a whole tray of crackers. The only thing I wish was done better was the meat to rice ratio; portion of the white rice that came with the salmon was way too little for the amount of meat. The picture makes it look like there's a lot of rice but it's only around the fish, none below. Regardless, I will come back to try their pastas and breakfast items, which is in my to-do list! read more

I was STARVING and this restaurant was nearby. I haven't been here in a while. I debated between the chicken fried chicken sandwich, the club and blackened chicken pasta. I debated because I had well over 10 minutes before my server appeared. The server suggested the chicken sandwich with a special spicy sauce not usually on it. I said sure. That is where the meal went downhill! The sandwich would have been much better without the suggested spicy sauce. The sauce tasted like Tabasco and LOTS of vinegar. Not a pleasant taste. It also made the bun super soggy. The sandwich came with fries. Very plain fries. Not golden, not season. Just fried fries. I had a glass of water. ONE glass. I was never asked if I needed a refill. The server kept disappearing for long periods. I didn't see her at other tables. Long wait again to get the bill. Was I hangry? Maybe. Annoyed? Definitely. Would I return? Maybe. Recommend? I've lived in this area for 11 years and had NO idea this amazing Southern food restaurant was here Their $14 lunch special is unbeatable: an entrée, two sides, cornbread or a roll, and soup or salad. Tartar sauce, salad dressings and more are made in-house - you can taste the difference! - ranch was so good I ordered the Chicken Milanese with white wine sauce and sautéed mushrooms - perfection. This place was recommended by a friend & I'm glad they told me about it! I've been in DFW for a long time & I'm sad that I just now discovered them. Affordable prices with portions that are just right. I had the beef philly (you can also get chicken), the filling was generous as the bun had it topped on both sides. The meat was tender, well seasoned, onions cooked perfectly (I am super picky about onions not cooked enough because I'm not a fan of raw onions), & the bun was toasty! Fries were nice & crispy. I also had a slice of chocolate mousse cake, this was a treat. It wasn't overly rich. My friend had a chicken sandwich with green beans, he was happy with that choice & my other friend also ordered the philly... no complaints from either of them! We had another friend join us last minute so we were there for over three hours, our waitresses had a shift change & both of them were so sweet... they didn't seem to mind us just chatting. The place seems really homey, down to earth. I will say the restroom needed a little love, they didn't seem too busy but I'm not sure if they had a lot of staff members working at the moment. My bill came out to $20 before tip, not bad. I would recommend you trying this place if you get a chance! I was sad to see that during our time there were only three or four tables at a time, including us in that count, were occupied. Let's start with the positive the feeling of this place is down home.The waiting staff seems to know the regulars especially the senior. Now the negative I walked in after a couple the hostess asked the couple in front the standard how many and escorted them to their table. Really good food! Let's say you pull a book off the shelf. You study the cover and notice it's old, a bit tattered around the edges and faded from time. But, when you open it up, you discover it's a first edition classic novel written and signed by your favorite author. Well. Southern Recipes Grill is the restaurant version of the tired book. The understated owner-operated restaurant certainly over-delivered on customer service and food quality and value. The table service was prompt, friendly and attentive. I don't think we had to ask for anything the entire meal, and that includes the 'to go' boxes at the end...because portion sizes are very generous. The very generous portion sizes were impressive, but the flavor was pleasantly unexpected. The meal was outstanding! We ordered the special, beef tips with mashed potatoes or rice, and two sides. We also ordered pecan pie for desert. Each slice was over sized, and as good a pecan pie as I've had anywhere in recent memory. This was one of the more satisfying meals we have had in a while. The ambiance definitely could use a face lift, both inside and out. It's old and worn out. But, if an unassuming decor is the price for quality food and generous portions at a fair price, leave everything alone. Who knows, maybe the 1980's ambiance will swing towards vouge next year. I liked the chicken fried chicken a lot. Nice crunchy coating and perfectly sized portion. Cream gravy was good and taters were good. Didn't like the tomatoes - they were grainy and tasted funny. I liked the bread - dense and it soaks in butter for a great texture and flavor. Soup was OK, but tasted like it was out of a can. DH thought the chicken fried steak was OK, but the breading was thick and didn't stick to the meat. He liked the fried okra and mashed potatoes, but thought the bread was too dense. Came here with friends from out of town to eat dinner prior to attending the Texas Rangers baseball game. We were greeted and seated immediately upon entering. Our drinks came out really fast. Everyone at my table ordered something different and all four of the meals were the perfect temperature and tasted really good. The portion size was also good. Each time I came with a large group and we were seated in a room where we could talk and actually hear one other down the long table, which was nice. Cute little family owned restaurant. We came in for a late lunch around 2 pm. I ordered the tilapia, my mom ordered chicken mushroom, and my sister the fried shrimp. We came a little late for breakfast items but my 3 year old wanted a pancake and the kitchen accommodated it. Our waitress was Jenny, and she was very friendly. Well, this was a fast turnaround on how I feel about this restaurant! We went back recently, and it was TERRIBLE. I made some excuses for them on the first visit, but with those same issues outstanding on the second visit and a host of new issues, I have to just warn people away at this point. In addition to the slow service we experienced last visit, this time the food was also just really not good. Our appetizer was fried green beans, and they were clearly just some pre-made frozen item that was cheaply breaded with thick, tasteless breading and a side of watery ranch. Ewww. I ordered the chicken fried chicken meal with cole slaw as my side. First, they brought me a chicken fried steak after a VERY long wait. Then, when I was finally able to flag someone down to tell them about the issue, they took back the plate and brought out what was supposed to be a chicken fried chicken breast (by which time my husband was done with his CFS). See the photo for the "breast" they gave me. It was basically a chicken tender that had been pounded so flat it was literally like 1/8" thick of meat. It was one of the saddest things I have ever seen. The cole slaw was also a serious issue, as it was honest to goodness worse than what you would expect to find in a grade school cafeteria. It was borderline rancid, and just absolutely disgusting. All of this for something like $12. I'm not sure what is going on "back of house" at Southern Recipes, but we will not be back.
