Was excited to try this place since everyone raved about it (especially their signature "Champ" sandwich). Well I went and ordered the Champ and was disappointed. It wasn't bad, hence the 3 stars, but it wasn't anything special. They put on too much oil and vinegar which made the bread soggy halfway through me eating it. My Hero indeed! As a Marylander just here for a visit - it sure seems to me like there's twenty of these places per square mile in this region. So it strikes me that there must be a reason the line is out the door here at 2:30 on a Saturday afternoon (I wonder what it's like after work on Friday??). Just like there must be a reason there are signs everywhere saying the owner of the Carvel store next door will tow you and your hero for parking in his lot. We had The Champ (an Italian sub) and The Bocconcini (a roasted veggie sub, with fresh mozzarella). Both were delicious. About the only thing keeping this place from 5 stars is the "cash only" policy. It's very inexpensive, but I got lucky this time ... and had exactly $1 cash to spare. After all the hype and seeing the long line i was expecting something terrific. My chicken cutlet was dry and tasteless. The macaroni salad was plain, literally just mayo on pasta. Its a great sandwich shop thats hidden. Parking is very limited and try not to park at carvel at the corner because they have signs all over saying you will be towed away. They only take cash but if you need a atm they have one outside. The sandwiches are nice and big for 12 bucks i got a soda, chips and chicken supreme. By far the absolute best place to order a hero for a party or just stop in for a sandwich on the south shore-period. Every year on Christmas Eve I make sure to get a hero for our family party. Best hero's that we have ordered are the chicken cutlet with fresh roasted peppers, mozzarella and balsamic vinaigrette and the chicken cutlet with melted cheddar cheese, bacon and mayo- we did a half and half of these combinations and it was a big hit. The Reuben sandwich here is absolutely amazing. It's an old place I can remember from when I attended high school locally, still looks exactly the same from the wood paneling to the old signs on the wall. I hope it never changes a thing, nostalgic place that brings me back to when I was in high school or home from college, and most importantly the sandwiches never changed...best of the best!!! Service- if it's Anthony, 10 stars, anyone else, 1 star, and if it's the guy who gave me a counterfeit $10 bill folded up with my change yesterday 5/12/17 around 6pm, -1,000,000 stars. I work too hard and I've been a customer too long, (since 2008 or earlier) to be treated this way. Guess that's to be expected from a business that only deals in cash. Yes, I should have checked it, but if you've been there, the line is always out the door and I was trying to get out of the way as quickly as possible AND I'm not expecting to be hustled by a "legitimate" business!!!! Buffalo chicken hero is sososososooo good. I don't really like to order chicken cutlets from delis because i often find they don't taste very fresh or are tough to eat and soggy. I've been going to My Hero for at least the last twenty years now... best sandwich on long island period. Nothing comes close. I'm a sandwich guy and always willing to check out a recommended spot- but my hero towers above the competition. Anthony and the crew are quick, courteous, and skilled sandwich makes. Not to mention, nothing beats the works! The shredded lettuce, thin sliced onions, salt/pepper/oregano, and oil/vinegar mix together and create sandwich perfection. Add to that their amazing bread and very generous portions of meat and cheese and it is a sandwich that can't be beat. The prices are more than reasonable as the sandwiches could be two meals (they never are for me cause they are just too good!). A definite must go to in the Merrick/ Bellmore area. Most people who live or work in the area know the place by name. Usually during peak hours of lunchtime you can see a line outside to the end of the sidewalk. Even if there is a wait, it is well worth it! The sandwiches come in two sizes (small and large). Small size can well feed you for one meal. If you're feeling extra hungry, want to save a meal for later or share with a friend, get the large size. I usually get the All-American or if I want a hot sandwich I go for the eggplant parm or shrimp part. They also serve you classic potato, pasta and coleslaw salads. My favorite is the bow tie pasta salad. Just be sure to bring cash since they do not accept credit cards. Parking can be tricky if it is busy. There is really only Street parking available. If there isn't any in front of the shop, you can park down the street by the Italian restaurant across the street. I usually find some close by parking there. read more

If you are from any neighboring town to merrick, you know about my hero. This is the best, I mean best, place to eat a hero/sub. They pack your hero with so much meat that you can eat half of the sub and be full for the rest of the day. The bread is always fresh and soft. The Mac salad is always fresh! Just like everyone else in the area, I HAD to try this place after all the reviews. Well, I'm disappointed. I got 2 heroes for a block party. They were both the round 4-foot variety. One was Italian, the other was chicken cutlet. The Italian one was OK, but they put way too much black pepper on it. That's fine for me, but not my guests. It was overpowering. The Chicken Cutlet was one of the worst sandwiches I have ever had. The chicken was so tough we could barely chew through it. Way overcooked and too much breading. We threw out about 3 of the 4 feet. I also got mac, potato, and cole slaw. Not good at all. They don't seem to take pride in their food at all. They just try to bang out as much as they can for maximum profit and stopped caring about quality. That was my impression. The other issue I had was when I picked up the heroes, the place was closed, but the entire staff was making heroes. However, I noticed a few staff members not using gloves (especially the older woman, maybe the owner) while they placed the meat and cheese on the hero. The place isn't exactly too clean, so this was a huge turn off to me. Lastly, they didn't have my food ready on time. The older man bitched out one of the younger workers because apparently he forgot to tell him that I was picking up a salad, so he'd have to make it while I waited. The old man told me it would be a half hour, so when I kinda repeated him "A HALF HOUR??" the younger man said no, don't listen to him, I'll get it done in 5 minutes. Well, it still took 25 minutes of me standing there watching them make sandwiches with their dirty hands. Never again will I order from here. read more

Some neighboring businesses would happily lure you to their empty lot and tow you in a heartbeat. My Hero posts signs warning about this because, like Jesus to Mrs. Robinson, they love you more than you will know. Okay, so what makes this place excel? Their cheeses and meats are immaculate, always a great way to start. They also design a menu and stick to what works. Some of their specialty subs have achieved a near scientifically perfect balance: the cool crisp Champ and the savory Chicken Club come to mind. And the bread is top-notch. This is the European loaf taste and texture at its finest, firm and sturdy for supporting a thick sandwich, yet soft and simple as you tear into it. If the bread makes the sub (and it does) this is the stuff dreams are made of. Small and unassuming, My Hero is a hidden behemoth of a local fixture. Between the subs' quality and variety, the straightforward professional staff, and the in-store showcasing of local business cards, they are a true community gem.
