I think it's overrated. I've heard a lot of hype and good things from reviews and friends, but unfortunately our lunch last weekend fell short of satisfactory. The line was out the door when we got there (not to mention having to find street parking) so it added to the angst and anticipation. I went with the lauded chicken club and hubby chose the champ with the works. The sandwiches are HUGE so you get a lot of bang for your buck, but not a lot of flavor. We went halfsies and I just couldn't understand why people love this place. Both lacked flavor...and we were basically eating because we were hungry, not because we enjoyed it. This is the place. I am not from the area and have heard how great this place is. We went once before, but they were closed. So today was the day. First of all, parking is hard. The Carvel is known for towing, so don't park there. Once you find a spot, you can find your spot on the line. We ordered and waited for our sandwiches to be made. Paid and headed home to eat them. I had the Chicken Cutlet Supreme, which is a cutlet, lettuce, tomato, onions, mozzarella and roasted peppers. She had the Chicken Cutlet Club. We each had half of each. The chicken cutlet was crisp and juicy. Bread was soft. If I had to choose, I might lean for the club. Both were great. Best deli I have been to in a long time. Highly recommend the wait. Fat guys know their sandwiches. When that fat man is Mr. Jon Gabrus (no H in Jon or Gabrus), of the Comedy Bang Bang podcast fame, you don't even hesitate. You take intern Gino's advice and head out to Jerusalem Avenue, ASAP, to try one of these delectable sandwiches. Jon always talks about how good the chicken club is, with #NOTOMATO, but you know what? I like tomatoes! So I got a large Chicken Club with lettuce, tomatoes, and onions, and my friend got the Champ, with lettuce tomatoes, and mayo, and we were able to trade halves and enjoy the best of both worlds. The first thing I noticed about the food is that the bread was really good. Nice and soft, and really added a nice base flavor to the meat. Then with the Champ, the quality of the meats that they use is second to none. There was so much flavor in what would otherwise be a typical Italian sub/hero. As for the chicken club, the chicken cutlets were pounded flat, tender, and well seasoned with breadcrumbs. The bacon maybe could have been a little crispier, but I suppose I should have asked for the bacon to be cooked well done. Both sandwiches were awesome and I don't know which one I liked better. The chicken club was nice since it was a hot sandwich, but the Champ was probably the best Italian sub I've had in a very long time. Now I have to go back and try another one of my favorite sandwiches, the chicken parm hero! Just remember, they're closed on Sunday and Monday, and they take CASH ONLY! Happy eating! read more

My go to spot for sandwiches. The line is always long regardless of what time I come here. I call ahead of time now and it's ready in the time they promise (just go straight to the register). The champ and chicken club are my favorite. I usually order the large, and half of the sandwich pretty much gets me full. They sandwiches are fresh and packed with meat and soo tasty. I really do hate their parking lot, its so tiny with space for maybe 7 cars if u cram it all in. If u do manage to find a spot in there, there is only one little ramp to come in and out. I stopped in after the lunch hour and ordered one of the most delicious chicken parm heroes of my life. Probably the best spot on the island for a sandwich. For $10 you get a HUGE sandwich. Most of the time I eat half for lunch and the other half for dinner. The variety is great and I haven't been disappointed yet. My ONLY complaint is there's always a long wait. On top of a 45 minute wait for two sandwiches I ordered a pastrami Swiss and mayo.. The guy comes back and tells me I'm sorry I put mustard on your sandwich or would you like it... Hands down the best sandwich I have ever had in my entire life. Moved to NC recently and my husband (who is not even from Long Island) makes me bring him home my hero chicken clubs in my carry on. Amazing eggplant parmigiana too and the best hero bread you will ever eat. Yes the line is long, yes its cash only, yes they are only ties-sat, and yes they close for 3 -4 weeks every summer- but nothing could make me love my hero less. I am fighting back tears writing this review. I have never been spoken to like that before in my life. I called to place an order for multiple heroes in hopes of bringing them to a block party. The gentleman on the phone was condescending, aggressive, told me to "stop talking," when I was trying to ask questions about how they might be able to help me. Told me he didn't have time to cut the sandwiches up and asked why I couldn't do it myself. Talked me through "walking into the kitchen, getting a knife, slicing them"...in such a degrading and belittling tone like I was a child. I told him I'd be withdrawing my order because I couldn't tolerate being spoken to like this. I'm angry that I couldn't find braver words in the moment to defend myself and that I allowed him to make me feel so small. If a coworker/boss heard him, I would hope they would have acted on the spot. It truly bordered verbal abuse. I grew up in Bellmore and have long frequented My Hero. It's a family staple. I will gladly never eat a sandwich there again and tell everyone I know that they do not deserve our business anymore. Man I love this deli! Where else are you going to find a huge quality hero that you can't finish for 8 bucks? My favorite my hero is a roast beef with the works add mayo. Alway ask for the works. It consists of lettuce, tomato, onion, salt, pepper, oregano, oil and vinegar. You won't be disappointed. There seems to always be a line out the door no matter the day or season so your best bet is to call ahead. Sacred My Hero! My childhood mecca! The chicken club is the best sandwich on Long Island. Period.
