I tried out a new Banh mi shop in Houston called My Baguettes. This place is pretty lowkey in the Kim son plaza. Their shop is pretty small but they have a few tables inside. In additional to Banh mi, they also have some other breakfast items such as bò né and some specialty drinks. I got their meatball and dac biet banh mi. They are pretty generous with the sauce but they could've added more pickled veggies. I loved the meatball banh mi. The meatball portrays the typical xíu mại flavor, so tender and flavorful. Clean, laid back atmosphere. You order and pay at the counter and they will call you up when your order is done. You can also call ahead to order for pick-up. Their passion fruit tea is okay, but I personally enjoy their freshly squeezed sugar cane with passion fruit. Banh mi are always fresh on the daily and delicious. It reminds me of Vietnam banh mi - soft yet flakey, bland but goes well with anything. You can't go wrong with any of their protein choices. Their banh mi bo nhe is okay but probably because I didn't get the sizzling option. Still, it's nice to have that if I want it to go. I'm also glad they have Vegeterian options so I don't have to drive all over the place, if need to. Prices are reasonable and not crazy over the top. With so many banh mi shops to choose from in Bellaire, it's hard to stand out, but My's does it with their freshly made baguettes and equally fresh and delicious meats! My go to is the cold cut combo. Simple and filling, topped with pickled carrots, cucumbers, Jalepeno and cilantro. Their Bo ne always smells amazing and their siu mai meatballs look great. Fresh baguettes made on site! I feel like this should be enough of a draw! But fortunately for us all, the filling was equally as delicious. Walking in, there are about 7-8 tables and a young lady at the counter. We were greeted and given menus to order. With at least 10 different banh mi options, most will be able to find something to their liking. I went with #9 cold cut combo. This is a classic for banh mi. The cold cut to bread ratio was perfect and there also wasn't too much mayo (something I find a lot of places doing). The pate was able to stand out amongst the cold cuts and it was delicious. Of course the baguette itself was fantastic. It wasn't too crunchy and tasted fresh. My only complaint would be the cucumbers were sliced too thick (think quartered, length wise). If consistency is the hallmark of doing something well, then I would venture My Baguettes (#1) is exactly that for Banh Mi. They're a family run shop, in the heart of Saigon Houston Plaza, and frankly gets slept on a little too often. I love their sign with the ambient lighting, which stands out especially at night (#2). The inside is clean, modern, and has a decent amount of seating for just about any party. They claim their baguettes are made from scratch, which makes plenty of sense since it smells amazing in the mornings. The bread, especially when fresh, is outstanding. For many folks, good banh mi basically comes down to good bread. It's airy, light enough, and has the perfect crunch upon first bite. I prefer the house special (đặc biệt) but I think it's also a good option for dipping in their beef stew (bò kho) as well. The latter is a tinge on the salty side but it's not a huge deal. My only other desire would be that they slab on more paté, since I've found the spreads to be a little skimpy at times. What I think really gets unnoticed is their option for croissant for the bread. It's not only a game changer as croissant banh mi, but it's one of the only options I've found in all of Houston. Another thing that gets overlooked is their beef cubes and eggs (bò né), which features nice chunks of beef and a halfway decent over easy eggs served on a skillet. I don't think this is the best option in town, but I appreciate that they serve it no less. More bonus points for offering maggi sauce at each of the tables. It's a staple ingredient for many Vietnamese households and a necessary ingredient for all things banh mi. A big thumbs up to the service. They're good at managing the flow of the constant in-and-out traffic and are really good about making the food to one's liking. While the sandwiches are good for take-out, I'd recommend everything else to be experienced for dine-in service. The pork belly was flavorful and the veggies nice and crisp. The croissant banh mi was something I've never seen, so had to get that and boy it did not disappoint! Every once and awhile I'll get a weird insatiable cravings for banh mi. It's kinda the perfect quick and delicious lunch to grab and go, so who can blame me? I've eaten banh mi throughout the city for years in search of incredible banh mi. The quest for the ultimate Chinatown banh mi tentatively ends here. While my initial visit a few months ago was great, my last visit here was pretty dang perfect. Went with my usual thit nuong (marinated pork) plus pate. Service was fast even though there was a small line. There's a lot of more interesting options available here besides the usual like pork belly and stuffed chicken. When I received my order, I loved that the meat and bread were both nice and warm. The nice flakey baguette was toasted well. The sandwich contained a solid helping of both meat and veg, I love the way the carrots and daikon are pickled a little more than other places. The yummy pork is tender and marinaded well. All the components are there for a seriously satisfying banh mi! Well worth the return despite the slightly higher prices because of the superior product! So glad to have a favorite banh mi spot. It has been a couple years since I came back here. I introduced my friends to Bo Ne today and they absolutely loves it. Bursting full of flavors! I didn't need to add salt or any soy sauce like I usually do. Their butter and pate are delicious as well! I loved every bite. It helped that their bread is also very fresh! I found it interesting that they add a fried egg and was hoping to get that pretty sunny side up egg on mine to take a cool pic but was a but disappointed when they just stuffed it inside my sandwhich.. I remember coming here for the grand opening and it was insane! Like an excessive wait time for sandwiches so we only ordered some drinks and sandwiches then walked around. Came again the other day for Mai's coffee and I do have to say it's really really good and strong and you will not sleep for a long time after. The sandwiches however, are smaller than other places and the chicken banh mi was super dry and tasted sweet. The bread was rock hard too. I didn't like it. I wanted to try this place after seeing some pictures of their banh mi with the fried egg add-on. I came here for an early lunch with my girlfriend and when we got here it was relatively empty, with a couple other tables occupied. The service was pretty fast and the person behind the counter was friendly. We both got the grilled pork banh mi with the fried egg. When we got our food we actually weren't sure if they forgot to add our fried egg because it was buried so deep inside the sandwich. My girlfriend dug out the fried egg to take a picture, but otherwise it'll be buried in the middle. Overall the sandwich was delicious and the runny yolk from the fried egg added a unique element (even if it's just an egg). The bun was pretty good too, and had a crunchy outside crust with a soft inside. The price is a little high compared to most banh mi places but it's worth a try for the fried egg add-on. read more

Lots of tender and flavourful meats with a sunny side egg and a side of meatball. The pate and butter were so soft and it's the perfect amount to go with the banh mi. It was not dry at all. The bread came out hot and fresh. They make their bread in house so you're guaranteed it's fresh. The outside textured was crunchy and the inside is so fluffy and soft. The egg is cooked perfectly and the steak is actually medium rare( it cooks the longer it sits) it's also served with a baguette that is nicely crisp and fresh and homemade bo and pate! The "cold meat " cuts are all made in house fresh as well! They now served com bo luc lac. Steak is still cooked very well as well and the com chien (fried rice)with it had a nice crunch and taste great! The mi bo kho is nicely executed! I'm not sure if the noodles are homemade or not but it's cooked perfectly to my liking. Bo kho here flavor is flavorful and the meats inside of it is not overcooked. Noticed bahn mi croissants were a thing in Texas and I had to give it a try. I came here after eating a regular baguette pork bahn mi. I also noticed only in nyc do they serve a mixed meat including bbq pork as a standard sandwich option. Therefore I'm stuck with ordering pork sandwiches in Texas. They make their own bread here so I hope they also make the croissants. So the grilled pork was great. The amount of veggies were leaving. The croissant was no different than costco croissants. Now the sandwich as a whole, imagine a thin 100 calorie bread or the thin bagel sandwiches or a wrap except this is definitely more calories than the normal baguettes. I wasn't a fan of it. It has to be a baguette. The ratio was just off. The bread is supposed to add the crunchy texture and some bland aspect to balance the salty flavorful stuffing otherwise it'll just taste salty. Overall, cool concept and I'm glad I tried it. I'll probably be back for their baguette version which is likely better. Also they charge more for the croissants than baguette. We came for breakfast. Son wanted to try a different place that had Bo Ne. The husband and I shared a Banh Mi. The couple of places I've tried in Arlington the bread is overly toasted and hard. Here, the bread isn't overly toasted and is soft. The best Banh Mi I've ever had. Didn't expect anything less from a place called My Baguettes. The Bo Ne was very good and flavorful. Can someone please explain cold thit nuong to me? Or cold banh mi ga xe? Is there something I'm missing? Am I being culturally insensitive? I'm all for cold cuts in my banh mi dac biet (duh), but I can't just pretend that cold barbecued pork or shredded chicken is palatable. The owners are sweet and treat you like family. The bread was warm-ish and the veggies are fresh. The pate is good and the mayo is just slightly above average. Beyond that, there's nothing that makes me want to return to Mai's. At first I thought my thit nuong was just room temp or had cooled down quite a bit after cooking. Then I realized it was actually cold, like straight out the fridge. Same went for my shredded chicken on croissant. I hate to bash a mom and pop shop, but I literally took two bites out of each sandwich and had to toss them. The cafe sua da was *crazy* sweet and bitter, so we had to toss that too. There was a deal going on for buy 5 get 1 free banh mi. So, my family and I tried their combination and grilled pork banh mi's. Both were good, although the French bread could've been better compared to Cali's and Dons Cafe. We also saw other tables order the Bo Ne, aka Vietnamese steak and eggs. WOW. False Advertising and nothing to rectify the situation. Tried them for the first time during their grand opening and they were great and we ordered #3 grilled pork Banh mi and #10 Ca Phe Sua Da. Today, I was craving these sandwiches. I went to get my sandwiches and something tasted like it was missing while I was eating my sandwich. Come to find out the main reason why I come here is because of the pate! The pate is life and makes the banh mi! Sadly to inform you all the ONLY sandwich grilled pork #3 doesn't come with Pate!! What, why? Who knows. I was not informed when at the register to pay and before you think oh why didn't you just ask, well, it's because it's indicated on the menu that all sandwiches include PATE! Duh! Literally off the menu- "Ingredients are cooked from scratch- No processed food, all come with veggies, Mai's mayo and pate." When asked about why my sandwich didn't come with pate... the guy (counter help or bus boy) checked and he just came back and said #3 doesn't come with pate because it's grilled pork. When I told him last time I came it had pate he said the kitchen made the mistake the last time I came. I will not be coming back and for those who do go to get #3 YOU are getting ripped off by not getting the pate when it's included in price. Not seeing the choice of combination on the menu, I asked and the cashier said they do have it but not showing on the menu. Ordered 5 togo for $4.25 each, went home and I was so disappointed. All 5 sandwiches had only 1 type of meat and very skimpy. The taste of it wasn't that impressed as well. It was pricier than other places, but not tastier or more quantity. The bread was normal. Pickles and veggies were given in minimal amount too.
