I completely agree with Bill H. My family and I have been going here for 14 years and have always been excited to go. We loved the food and the service and the show the chefs performed. Everything has gone down hill. The prices have gone sky high. Our bill was $225.00 for four of us. I'm wouldn't complain about the price if the food was superior. It wasn't. The lobsters were so small they almost looked like crawdads, My husband's steak had so much fat on it, he couldn't eat most of it. I don't ever remember our foof ever being so poor. The chef didni't make the volcano or toss the shrimp into our mouths, something my son always looks forward to. And he didn't offer us the two sauces. We had to ask for them when he was done cooking our dinner. We ordered the tempura combo and it was so soggy and not crispy at all. Very disappointing. They also changed their plates from glass to plastic. They used to have very nice cloth napkins and now they have cheap paper napkins that they are pretty stingy with. They have down graded all of these things and have raised their prices on their food. With prices like $55 per plate, I would expect cloth napkins at the very least. We usually request Manuel as our chef, but for some reason, we didn't do that this time. That was probably our mistake. Manuel has been there for years and he is really one of the main reasons we go there! We wish him the BEST! My family & I use to love coming to this place, they have really gone down hill the last couple years. It's not only really dirty on the inside, cheaply decorated , but the "owners" are so rude. When the woman owner isn't busy yelling at the staff she's walking around being useless not helping anyone with anything. They also don't give free birthday dinners as posted on their front window. So this was our first and LAST time coming to this place. We decided to come here to celebrate my husband's job transfer closer to home and since ut was recommended by quite a few we decided to try it out. My husband and I got the special for 2 ppl (an entree of choice for each, steam rice, shrimp appetizer, veggies, soup and salad) for $26.99...Not bad right?!? We also ordered a hibachi chicken kids meal ($11.99), veggie tempura ($5), california roll and we all upgraded to a hibachi chicken fried rice ($3.50) and an extra one for my babies to share. Prices not bad and we were excited to try the place out. Ambiance: was alright. The restaurant only had one other family there.. should've been a sign. Atmosphere: casual..nothing fancy Waiter: was kind of slow.. actually, he was slow.. and he bever came back to offer refills on drinks or anything. SMH. Food/show: was ok. Benihana is WAY better! We asked for our steak to be medium and we got well done. They tried to copy Benihana but nothing can compare.. flavor was not all that. Show was kinda boring too. Took us about 20-30 for us to get a cook..remember there was only 1 ither family in the restaurant and they were finishing up. Now, here is the kicker.. so we get our bill and some prices were off. Not by much but that isn't the point. For example, they were charging us $4 for the rice when it said $3.50 on the menu and veggie tempura was $6.50 instead of the $5 advertised. Over charging us but again, not by much and still a NO NO. My husband was fine paying it but i wanted them to be aware that that is false advertisement. So i bring the bill to the register, open up the menu and waited for the guy. I showed him the bill and compared to the menu. His response, "uh, well because you guys upgraded to the hibachi rice and we charge $4 for an upgrade." I responded, "Well, that doesn't make any sense. We only upgraded 3 of the 4 but you're going to charge us the same price for all? And what about the tempura?" "Well see we just changed our prices", he says. I wanted to like this place I really did, sadly we had to walk out on a Monday night we were the only 2 customers there. our server poor girl had zero menu knowledge couldn't answer a single question , had a boring personality and must have been 16. The owner or owners wife who knows didn't help her but rather sit on the chair playing on her phone, we had to walk out, but while sitting there for 10 minutes the observations on how dirty this place is and smelled was very evident. Grease dripping from the tepenyaki table fume hoods, lighting dimly lit from the years of grease coating. There sounded like there was a party going on in the kitchen which was very strange since the restaurant was completely dead. I almost canceled my reservation after reading all the the negative reviews. I decided to take my wife here anyway, since there isnt much else to do in Tracy. I had a wonderful experience and dont see what all the negative hype is about. We had a reservation, and were seated about 1 minute after walking in. We were seated and the waitress came over to get our drink orders quickly. The place was crowded, but the waitress was still right on everything. The chef (there were 2 or 3 working) came over within 5 minutes. He didnt have to ask what everyone was having, he must have had a cheat sheet somewhere. He started cooking and was polite, funny, and did some cool knife and spatula juggling. The food was delicious and cooked exactly how we asked (my wife had steak and I had scallops, both were good). NEVER EAT HERE! I don't know where to begin so let's start with the cleanliness... Or should I say lack of. The tables were so sticky the sleeves of my sweater were sticking to the table. The walls and mirrors were grimy and covered in dirty grubby smuges, reminded me of what my Windows look like after I take my dog in the car. The service was horendiou, over 15 minutes to be greeted and asked what we would like to drink... Almost an hour and a half to receive our rolls, and our entire table didn't even get their food together. The rolls came out 10-30 minutes apart. Half our table was completely finished before the other half even got their food. We had to ask for utensils, soy sauce, extra plates, refills because our server wouldn't check on us. Okay now let's get to the food.... If I'm paying $10-$12 a roll I expect a large decently presented roll. NOPE. Tiny, sloppy unevenly cut rolls. The rice was sloppy wet and fell apart. The cucumber or what that consider a cucumber was down right disgusting. I had to pull it out so I didn't gag. The grab was so fake. I could have bought better imitation crab at my local safeway. Every roll was warm and smelled of old fish. Nothing was fresh! I couldn't eat more than a few bites. In all honesty the best thing I had there was my tap water with lemon. We spent $52 and it was utterally disappointing. We passed a taco bell on the way home and we actually considered going and getting food, but we all had lost our appetites. We came for my birthday. I was told they would sing.. and that's it. No free birthday meal. Food was great, our chef was awesome and so sweet. The water was disgusting, there was no Dr Pepper so they brought root beer that was flat. The sprite was flat. No refills on Shirley temples. The bill comes.. the fried rice was an extra charge. The tip only went to the waitress not the chef. They did not sing nor gave the birthday dessert either. They just want your money and that's it. This place used to be called something else I forget it wasn't benihana or anything but they try to be and cheaper too. This is my date/girlfriend place where I initiate all of them by taking them here, each one enjoyed it I must say. It is a benihana type restaurant where they cook the meal in front of you. I like them because they are cheaper than benihana saves me $30. Most items on their menu is good, sushi ok and you can order it to go. I think you're paying more for the entertainment than your food. I recommend going in a group to be seated quickly vs going in as a couple and waiting a while to be seated by waiting for another group. read more

DON'T GO THERE! Worst sushi place ever! I was heading to Johnny's Diner next door only to find it was closed - so I decided to stop by here (without even checking Yelp first!). I walked in Monday 7:45pm and there was only one party around a hibachi grill in a separate room. There was no one else in the restaurant, except for a man sitting eating Kentucky Fried Chicken out of a box! Apparently he was the owner or a staff...I obviously looked confused and he prompted me to sit down. I headed to the sushi bar - there was no fish in the sushi cooler...I thought they were closing. A server asked what I wanted to drink and gave me a menu - I ordered a combo Sushi Avenue. I THEN decided to check Yelp...oh crap, I'm in a bad place already. I decided to stay and see for myself. Oh man...worst sushi ever! I've been eating sushi for decades and this place needs to be shut down! I even spit out the eel sushi into my napkin! Everything was horrible! We had a friend come into town for dinner with us on a Sunday and unfortunately our first pick, Kengo, was not open, so we decided to try this out. I had the Hibachi Chicken meal, which I was pretty satisfied with, and my husband and our friend split several rolls including things like Sushi Surprise, Steve, Captain Crunch, and one other that I can't remember. All of those, except for the Captain Crunch, were extremely bland and really didn't make an impression. Both of them were liberally using soy sauce and wasabi just to get some flavor. The server (it seemed we were dealing with two different people but it was never clear who was our actual server was) forgot my soup, so that was a bummer. The part we were most dissatisfied with was the service. When we came in we were seated in the regular restaurant bit. We ordered and our drinks came and then the first round of our food came... But we didn't get any flatware, plates, napkins, chopsticks, etc., until we asked for them. A lot of the time our drinks went without topping off. When we left, my glass was empty and had been for at least 15 minutes, and we hadn't seen the server to even ask for refills. Finally, when we asked for our check, we could not figure out where either of our servers had gone off to. We sat there for at least ten minutes waiting for our check. Unfortunately we eventually interrupted what looked like the owners while they were eating their own dinner to ask for our check... Just so that they could go grab the already printed check off of the counter, which simply needed to be delivered to our table. TL;DR-- Don't go here if you want decent service or good sushi. If you have time to kill and don't care if you slowly dehydrate, you'll be fine here. read more

I had a wonderful time at Mushashi's for dinner! The food was fantastic! Steak, rice, shrimp! Mmmmm! The drinks are awesome! And the service is great! The tricks the chef does with the food are very entertaining! Very fun for a group! Not recommended for a party of 2 though. You'll be placed at a table with other people. That's uncomfortable. Unless you go to eat just sushi. They have a separate dining area for that. Prices are a little steep though. Overall, great place if you have the cash and want to eat somewhere fun with excellent food! We usually only go for birthdays or parties though. First off, I have to say that I am totally comparing this place to one of my favorite teppanyaki spots...Benihana, so I know this review will sound unevenly matched, but hear me out...so this spot is located in an older strip shopping center in Tracy, totally hole in the wall. You step in, and the decor is beautiful, nothing you would have expected. On the right side, standard sushi bar and on the left side teppanyaki paradise. 8 people to a table, nice and open area. Wait staff is very attentive and nice. Chef was kinda friendly and prepared the food. Now here comes the reason for the 2 star...Going to Benihana, the chefs are always on point, I have never seen a Benihana chef drop his tools. This chef on the opening click, dropped his tools several times, OK fine, he looked tired and granted he was the only one cooking. Usually Benihana chefs do tricks with the food, (ie. shooting the food onto his hat or flinging a shrimp to a customer.) BUT where he failed big time was the onion volcano...at Benihana, the onion is cut, stacked and filled with oil, lit, then slide over so it creates a vortex of steam and flames...this chef basically set it on fire, then shot it with oil then cut it in half...no steam, no volcano vortex...basically it was WEAK. Restaurants like this especially teppanyaki style, people pay for the show AND the food. He prepared the food, and it was good and portion size was on point, especially for the price....(2 for $25). Needless to say, if the food wasn't good, then we definitely would NOT come back. Now for the sushi...i don't consider myself a sushi snob. When ordering sushi with a meal, usually, the sushi comes out first. This was not the case, it came out near the end of our meal when we were all kind of full. BAD. Another thing is, when I eat sushi, i expect the sushi to have some form and stability when picking it up with your chopsticks. We ordered 3 rolls...none of which had ANY form, like the sushi was not wrapped tightly. Presentation was nice, but each piece fell apart when you went to grab it. HUGE NO NO. Even the budget sushi spots, the sushi holds together when you grab it. Probably will not order sushi next time we go here, unless that issue is fixed. Consistency...going back real quick regarding doing tricks for your customers....the table next to us, we watched as he flung several shrimp at the customers, and had a more engaging experience with them. We were the next table, and we got a boring lackluster show. Then the next 2 tables, same thing, they got the full show with full engagement...why didn't he stay consistent when it was our turn? So after all this...in their defense, it was an hour before closing, it was a weekday and they seemed short staffed, the chef appeared tired...we will probably go to this place on a weekend, maybe earlier in the day and see how it goes, if they do better, i may revise my 2 star. They had no tea and no miso soup. We sat at the teppanyaki grill and because of this they wouldn't allow us to order certain sushi items. We were able to order a Dragon Roll and a Rainbow Roll but they brought out 2 Spicy Dragon Rolls. When we asked for what we ordered it took 30 minutes for us to get our actual rolls. My boyfriend and I came here last night to celebrate our anniversary. We had a reservation for dinner and were seated within 5 minutes of arriving. About 20 minutes go by and finally someone comes over to take our drink order. When bringing our drinks over, the girl told us that they were too busy and that it would be AT LEAST 45 minutes until someone can come over and take our order even though the gentleman on the phone said we wouldn't have a wait. I really enjoyed the show that the chefs put on. It was like other show I have seen at other restaurants but our chef was able to add his own style to it which was refreshing to watch. Last time going last week - this place is F-I-L-T-H-Y greasy. Every type of meat you order is frozen!! Even the chicken - you know Mr. Foster lives in San Joaquin County, surely you can get fresh. The food is always delicious and the service is always garbage. It's so disappointing because I love the food and know that every time we go I will have to compromise getting bad service. I'm always an excessive tipper and last night I actually only gave the kid 10% which he wasn't even deserving of that. We sat for over 10 minutes before getting acknowledged(We had to ask someone if we had a server) , he wasn't very attentive, and then when it came time to pick up our bill he was OVER attentive making us feel rushed to pay when we weren't even done eating. My husband and I had our hearts set on going to try Kengo sushi which happened to be closed (sunday evening). So we decided to try Musashi despite the poor reviews. We sat at the bar because there was a private party that took up all of the tables. They have a side of the restaurant specifically for habachi shows that we didn't have a chance to look at ( will have to check it out next time). The sushi chef at the bar was great, I wish I asked his name, he was attentive and talkative, he had to put up with my husband asking a million questions about..japanese beer, how they "grade" fish for sushi and so on and on...really? I was blown away when we were given menus...this place is cheap. I don't know about the habachi prices but none of the rolls were over $8!! That kind of scared me actually cause I worry about the quality of a cheap sushi place. The rolls were good, not wonderful but good. The chef asked how spicy we wanted the spicy tuna, which was really nice cause I like it hot! Ohh and the fried rice is amazing...super tasty!
