I was in the mood for Jamaican food and after reading reviews decided to try Mum's out. I had driven by a bunch of times, but had never stopped in before. I went in for an early lunch and was quickly helped. I got the curry chicken, rice and peas, and cabbage. I thought the portion was solid for the price. I love curry chicken and while the flavor was there the chicken was pretty dry. Not sure if they were just having an off day, but it was a bummer. I thought the rice and peas were tasty and the cabbage was a nice compliment to the whole dish. Everything is so good! "Real" rice, none of this par boiled crap! Cow foot is my go to, it is soo good! Ike and salt fish are the bomb and the cállalo too! Could this be it? The Jamaican place we've hoped and dreamed for? Well, it's certainly great, and it gives my two other favorites in the area a run for their money! Lee's Kitchen is good albeit a little non traditional, and Jamaican Grille is solid but has inconvenient hours and is further away from where I am. I think Mum's is right up there with those two local greats. It's fresh and it has good hours, which might even give this new challenger a leg up! I got the jerk chicken with rice and peas (and gravy!) and cabbage. It also came with plantains. I tried a beef patty as well, because why not?? I think the Jerk chicken was top notch, and pretty much what I expect when I go to a Jamaican place. They really loaded it on there! The rice and peas were solid- Mum's manages to avoid the pitfall of dry rice. And the beef patty was also not too cooked or dry. Overall, great meal. I enjoy their salt-fish dishes but the oxtails have no comparison in my opinion to Jerk Masters at NewBern Avenue. I also don't like how luke warm the food is. When I order food, I want it nice a hot not luke warm. People are also pretty dry and not as friendly as Jerk Masters. Today for example, I was given the very last pieces of the oxtails which ended up being the tiny pieces with one large piece. I told the young lady if she could toss in a piece of goat meat since not much meat and her response "we can't do that". Talk about dry customer service. Jerk Masters know the way to keep customers is to take care of them. This place makes me feel as if they don't really need my business and to me that's bad business. read more

After having the amazing jerk chicken at Sandovan's in DC, we had our reservations about trying a new Caribbean restaurant here in Raleigh but boy, was it worth the risk! Mum's Jamaican is fantastic! Their jerk chicken is very well seasoned and very tender. We also tried the curry chicken, which was delicious, and had a very homely feel and taste to it. The sides were all great, especially the rice and peas, which I thought was very well done. The cabbage was a little greasy though. I've had Jamaican food from New York to the one on Poole rd in Raleigh. This place isn't terrible but I wouldn't recommend it to someone who knows what authentic Jamaican food taste like. The oxtails tasted more like southern oxtail rather then the Caribbean spices that I'm accustomed to. I am so tired of restaurants toning down jerk for American tastes. So I approached this restaurant with some trepidation. All I can say is that the jerk chicken was as good as the best I've had in Jamaica where I used to travel to frequently as a telecommunications engineer. The rice and beans were top notch. For most people, jerk chicken is the featured dish at a Jamaican spot but for me it's the oxtails. I ordered the oxtails with plantains and the curry goat with okra. The curry goat and okra HIT THE SPOT. I inhaled that dish. It should also be noted that I was starving so there's that. The oxtails left me disappointed. They were not nearly falling off the bone or even tender how I'm used to. Also, they almost had a barbecue sauce taste. I would not order again. This is a jewel of a restaurant. Unassuming in a corner of a strip mall, you could miss it BUT DON'T!!! I had curried goat with peas and rice with plantains. The meat had the most wonderful flavor and was so tender. The sides were perfectly cooked. My boyfriend had jerk chicken with peas and rice and greens. OMG, the chicken was perfectly seasoned and the greens were so good. We also got a meat patties to munch on in the car before we got home. It had a buttery flaky crust and the meat was delicious.
