A bit of a hidden gem in the brunch scene, Mudpenny features a nice coffee bar and dining area. We ordered the Phillip picante skillet and the biscuits and gravy. The skillet has a great balance of ingredients and was not too spicy for an early meal. The biscuits are keto and have a very dense texture but a nice cheese flavor. The gravy is very dense as well and is not your moms southern gravy. While the flavors are good, it's a tough dish to eat. I'm a truck driver and most of the time I can't fit my semi in restaurants. I've been driving past MudPenny for some time now and have mentioned to my girl we need to try them out. MudPenny is a delightful little surprise. I loved them right away as I parked my car in their small lot. Hooray for not having to parallel park. I really enjoyed the clean look of the white brick building. The space inside is bright, open, and inviting. The staff was super patient while I narrowed down my options. I love that they have plenty of choices that allow you to make healthy selections if that's your style, I ordered a cafe miel with oat milk to drink and a Apple Walnut Salad for lunch. The coffee was brought out to the table. It was hot and perfectly sweetened and steamed. My salad was tasty. They didn't skimp on the bacon, which is always a win in my book. The salad had a light dressing and plenty walnuts and apples. It was on the lighter side so if you're feeling a bit hungrier, you may want to add some chicken to fill you up. The staff was super attentive with clearing our finished plates. I would love to go back to check out breakfast sometime. We were skeptical of all of the five star reviews... but they're accurate! This place is lovely. This was our first in house restaurant experience since March and we felt very comfortable. The staff wore masks and gloves and the restaurant seemed impeccably clean. The food was quite tasty and they were able to serve two of us who are celiac (gluten free). We came in during the early afternoon on Saturday - not busy, but we were encouraged to see a good number of cars in the parking lot. My wife and I were greeted right away. After reviewing the menu, we ordered the Turkey Harvest and Chicken Salad, both served on their Naan bread. The food was fantastic - as hard as it might believe to hear someone get so excited about sandwiches, these were exceptional. The naan is outstanding, as was everything else about these choices. I honestly can't find a single negative regarding the food. As good as the food was, the service was even better. Incredibly friendly, humorous, competent, and busy. These young ladies were always doing something, but they were never too busy to check on their customers to make sure that everything was to their liking. It always was. I accompanied my husband on a business trip to GR and, being foodies, we went to Yelp for some breakfast spot ideas. Mudpenny came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere alone was incredible. The brick walls, high windows, and semi-industrial decor were contemporary yet homey and the music had a great vibe. We came on a Tuesday morning after the Labor Day holiday and we had most of the restaurant to ourselves. The staff was super friendly and attentive. The coffee was just slightly on the acidic side (which normally I don't like as much) but this was oddly very good. The menu has a diverse selection - complimentary to different diets - with many healthier choices. I had the Fire Toast, which is a soft boiled egg on avocado toast with goat cheese and pickled onions on flax toast. It was delicious and the portion size was perfect. My husband ordered Strawberry French Toast using a cranberry cinnamon bread. It was pretty good (not earth-shattering but still very good). The only thing we would ask them to change is maybe serve the maple syrup warmed up. Aside from that I'd say it was a great choice for breakfast. We will come back the next time we're in Grand Rapids. read more

This is an amazing place, with honestly good food...just as they say. My sister treated me to a great meal. We split the pancakes and the lentils with added bacon and an egg. Stopped for the first time for a late breakfast. Service was prompt. Espresso was real good. Some of the best ever. I had the oatmeal and my guest had BYOB. Both were great with nice presentation. Well I had a function at work and MudPenny was ordered. I feel like if they can get the word out they will significantly damage Panera's lunch catering in the Kentwood area. Salads were full of vibrant greens and tasty extras( we had three different salads) and the sandwiches were diverse and well planned and executed. The flavor profiles were excellent and, from what I consumed, the ingredients were very fresh and crisp. I truly enjoyed the naan style bread they use as I have a thing for Indian food. I would put this toe to toe with Panera any day. If feel like MudPenny delivered great value for the money. Since I didn't order the meal I am not sure of their full offerings but if my lunch was truly reflective of the menu than you should consider this place next time you are looking for light ( sandwich/salad) lunch catering. read more

I tried the Shroomer sandwich at the Ada location. It has roasted oyster mushrooms, avocado, garlic aioli, and crunchy pea salad on sunflower flax bread. First, it was the size of my head! I wish you could get a half sandwich of at least some menu items. Then, in spite of the delicious sounding ingredients, it was somehow short on flavor. We had boxed lunches for an office meeting- a variety to choose from: chicken salad, turkey classic,ham classic and quinoa fiesta. The chicken salad sandwich was A-mazing! I was disappointed by Mudpenny after reading great reviews. I wish I could rate the staff separately as the woman who served us was fantastic - very patient with a busy little toddler with my party. I also did like the location as it's a bit off the beaten path and has lots of available street parking. Nicely spaced tables and well lit interior. I like that they have carafes of water on the table for you. I had a decent café miel which was prepared quickly and the staff member brought that out to our table. It was a bit strange to have a sit down restaurant with a high end feel that you aren't waited on but as long as it's not busy (it wasn't) I didn't have a huge problem with that. It was difficult to tell from their menu what the breakfast items were (is it a bowl? Or a sandwich? Or something else?) as the ingredients are listed but not how they're prepared. I got the keto power item just because the ingredients sounded good. It ended up being a hash on a bed of spinach that was quite greasy. Though I will say that the egg on top was very well cooked (though this wasn't something specified by the diner, it came cooked as the chef chose). As someone else pointed out, not a lot of self serve items are available in spite of this being a self serve place (salt and pepper, cream, sugar, extra napkins). Trying to give the benefit of the doubt. Maybe I'll try lunch since the burgers have good reviews. But maybe not. read more

I absolutely love this place! The women who run it are friendly from the moment you walk in. Every cup of coffee is brewed with care. The breakfast plates are innovative and nicely prepared. There is just a nice charm about a successful, cozy spot in this neighborhood. It was so good that we went twice in four days. The atmosphere is welcoming and fresh.
