Simple food with quick service! This place is casual and is a worthwhile stop while visiting the old salem area. We had tickets to a show at the Listening Room (which was FANTASTIC), but I'm reviewing the cafe here. The cafe was order up front and receive the food at your table. Right before the show, the cafe did fill up quickly. So, plan ahead if you're planning on eating before a show. A criticism I have is that two simple sandwich-based lunches with sodas ended up being much more than I think the value of the food was. I got the sunny swiss, which was a nice vegetarian option. The chips are just a basic bag of kettle chips. I think I would have likely felt better about the value per dollar if this cafe stepped up their side game. Even a bit of dill pickle on the plate could have jazzed it up. If you're looking for a no-frills sandwich or salad lunch, this spot may be for you. The food quality was solid. I came in, not to eat, but to see a band, so I really can't speak to the food. They do sell some cold drinks and snacks. The cookies are excellent. The location is nice. I love how this old house has turned into a really nice place to eat and enjoy music. I really hope I can come back soon. The staff were nice and everything was clean. I was pleasantly surprised. We were in the old Salem village. The visitor center recommended them. We were hungry, passed by and decided to eat lunch there. It was cute, staff very friendly. All the food was great. We ordered the Roma and the Trio Salad. The chicken salad, egg salad, and tuna were very good. Also we had veggies with the best ranch dressing We've ever had. I've really been hoping to try this spot and I am so glad the timing worked out so we could that day. Location: In the heart of Old Salem. The front entrance is on main street. Parking:luckily there is a lot of free street parking all around. Sometimes there's a lot of cars on Saturday but, I don't think finding a close spot would be an issue. Grub: We were all surprised at how delicious it was. I think we were expecting pre prepped sandwiches but, this is a true cafe where it's made by order. I am not sure if they use their bakery but the bread tastes homemade. It was perfect. The quality of the ingredients in all of our sandwiches were nice and I thought it was a nice portion being only $10-$13 per sandwich. They all come with a small side as well which were also good. They also have salads and soups we didn't try this time but, my guess is they would be yummy. Customer service: it's a small group of staff but they were all very pleasant and made out experience a good one. Overall:The ambience is casual with a cottage like historic feel. Perfect for so many casual small gathering occasions. I personally could just sit by the window all day and enjoy the nice view of nature. Been a while since I have been here. Great location in Old Salem. Indoor and outdoor seating. You order up front and they bring the food to you. Outdoor seating is very nice especially when the weather is great. The location is a solid 4 stars. The Food - 3 stars The menu is basic. Cold sandwiches, panini press sandwiches, and salads. They do have Moravian chicken pies which does sound tempting for next time. Kids menu also available. I almost ordered the muffuletta, but looked at my old review first. This was my first time eating at their new location at old Salem. They have signs pointing the way to the restaurant, which is helpful since it is not on Street level. You order at the counter and can eat inside or outside. Since it was hot, I chose to eat inside their menu is mostly sandwiches with a few salads. I had the turkey Reuben with potato salad. The sandwich was good. The potato salad was homemade and was a good side dish for a July lunch. The staff was nice. My father and his friend play music at Muddy Creek every once in awhile on weekends. So my boyfriend finally made it out to see them play and join my mother for dinner. Most of the parking lot was already full but we found a place towards the back. We sat outside at the table closest to the fan.The weather was beautiful that evening. Even if we hadn't sat near the fan, it still would have been great. Temps had cooled down and there was a bit of a breeze. The food was excellent. I checked the reviews before we went so I ordered the pimento cheese panini with spicy bacon and tomatoes, as recommended by several other reviewers. The add ons were only a buck extra and so worth it. The sandwich was great. I ordered potato salad as my side and it was equally as good. My boyfriend ordered the chips and salsa and my mother ordered the roast beef. I had a couple bites of their food and it was just as good. My boyfriend went back in to grab another beer and brought us out two of the white chocolate, cherry cookies. They were soft, delicious, and just decadent enough without being too rich. The crowd was just like the atmosphere here, very relaxed and mellow. Seating was pretty much full by the time we got our food but people started heading out when it got darker. The place was recommended when we needed a quick, light meal in the area. We dashed in and stood at the register to order. The cashier was quite helpful. The limited menu was a bit disappointing, but we finally made our selections. The Muddy Creek Cafe is in a reclaimed building and often plays host to local music. Local artists display their canvases in the restaurant as well. All is this adds up to a very quaint atmosphere. My friends decided to share the Hummus. Unfortunately, the restaurant had run out of pita, so they settled for tortilla chips. I had the Turkey Reuben and got more than my money's worth when, on my second bite, I discovered a bread tie in my mouth. You know, the plastic tabs that seal bags of bread? One of those. I was pleasantly surprised by my first trip to Muddy Creek Cafe. This is an interesting little place with a lot of local flare and a homey feel to it. Located down a backroad in Historic Bethania, this place could easily be missed by even a life long resident of Winston-Salem. My visit was on a Sunday, which was definitely a great choice. Every Sunday at 1:00 they have live music out on the front porch. The place was packed with people singing along and tapping their toes. They had extra seating outside on their wooden front porch with tents to block out the scorching sun. There was a huge variety of people and everyone seemed to be welcoming. The Johnny Possum Band were the first performers of the day. They were a band from New Zealand that played Americana/bluegrass/Folk inspired music. If Muddy Creek always attracts bands of this caliber, I will be a Sunday regular. The menu consists of mostly sandwiches. They also have a number of Craft beers available and Krankies Coffee! The Hoppyum from Foothills was "on tap." They literally just had a keg behind the counter like it was a frat party, but hey it tasted great and this just added to the locally owned feel that so many of us covet. I ordered the Pimento Cheese Panini with Spicy Bacon and tomatoes. For my side, I decided to go with their homemade potato salad. Although the food took a little longer than expected, I was entertained by the music and my company. The food was surprisingly delicious. It was honestly one of the best pimento cheese sandwiches I've had around here. They served it at the perfect temperature and the pimento cheese had a great spice to it, which was complimented by the spicy bacon. The potato salad was also great. Very creamy and they left the skin on the potatoes which I'm a fan of. To top it all off there is a delicious homemade pickle spear. The food is actually very good, but I think what makes this place special is the venue and the atmosphere. The cafe is in what feels like a barn. The wall art is eclectic with everything from sculptures made out of license plates, to local paintings, to pictures and art from the local elementary school children. There are also a number of local shops (think antique and general store type stuff) to keep you entertained within the same area. The food coupled with the atmosphere and great live music makes this a great place to come on a weekend, especially while the weather is still nice. read more

Such a great little place, off the beaten path. Everything is fresh, as locally sourced as possible, and very reasonably priced. The decor is a lovely rustic cabin feel, and the walls are covered in art from local artists. The food is excellent: hearty salads, and a good variety of sandwiches. They even have gluten-free bread, and were beyond helpful in making sure my sandwich was prepared in a way that didn't cross-contaminate it with gluten. We were in the area and we stumbled across the Muddy Creek Cafe as we were driving to a work related appt. We were looking for a quick bite for lunch and this cafe was perfect for that. The sandwiches included their own Pimento Cheese, Turkey Bacon Lettuce and Tomato, Cuban and Panini sandwiches of all sorts. The sides that you could choose from were their homemade potato salad, fruit cups and potato chips. Add to that a Boylan soda, craft beer or wine and you are all set. What a wonderful surprise! From the stone front to the lattice and ship lap, the atmosphere is country cute. I had one of their wonderful salad options and my less than adventurous teen had a burger and fries. The food was really good and the portion size was perfect. There was music out on the patio, too. My family and I are regulars, love coming back time and time again for lunches or dinners. I really enjoy sitting outside with a warm grilled Roma sandwich, spinach tomato and mozzarella with fresh fruit which is always delicious and a glass of local wine or beer. It is really popular with locals and gets very crowded and a bit hectic right around peak times. On nice nights when it's comfortable to sit outside its fine. The owner and employees are always fabulous and the whole place is great for supporting local: local business, local food and alcohol, local artists and musicians! Second time trying Muddy Creek Cafe - first time was February. Didn't have a good experience the first time so I figured I'd give them a second chance to prove me wrong. Ordering process was nice and friendly with the cashier. Decided to eat outside since it was a beautiful fall day. Love the outdoor seating area with plenty of seating area inside and outside. To my delight the live singer was ending around 3pm - just as I was seating. I like to eat in a quiet atmosphere. I ordered the chicken salad croissant. I must admit they made it pretty quick - who doesn't like getting their food quickly!? However, To my disappointment it ended up being one blob of chicken salad in the middle and not a big blob at that. There was more lettuce than chicken salad. Chicken salad was very plain and bland - no taste. Got the macaroni salad as a side - that was a amazing stuff - however only got a little taste because they put in a little ketchup cup. Hardly a side item, pathetic size. I love pickles and in the menu it said a pickle was included. Yeah no pickle. I'm all about supporting local restaurants and economy - however this doesn't even compare to a decent local restaurant. Do yourself a favor and Save your money and time and go someplace where you can do so much better. Sorry but I can't advocate this establishment and won't be back. read more

The cafe is open Wednesday through Saturday, and it features music events, open mic night on Thursday evenings, decor of local artists, a really neat menu board handwritten by an artist in Pilot Mountain, and a cafe style menu. I had their special avocado reuben sandwich that was absolutely delicious with a side of fruit and iced tea, and they included a pickle too. I was informed that orders for take out are given priority even if they ordered after me. I happen to live near by here so I frequent this place and know the owners by name. I like listening to the music when it is free to listen. Food is okay but a little pricey. Only reason for the 3 stars is the fact that the wait for your order can be long, especially if it is a busy night. But, twice when I ordered my food it didn't arrive at all. I had to step to the counter and remind someone to make my order. The customer service needs a little improvement. Spent way too much money and time last night at this place. They billed the band as being Irish. I'm not sure what I would describe it as instead but in all the time I spent in Ireland, I never saw a bass or a drum set in a trad band. They were mediocre, but they certainly weren't Irish. Cover was $12. The first Wednesday of every month the Irish bar downtown has free cover for a more traditional and real experience and pints are $3 there. At Muddy Creek, they were more expensive in addition to the cover. No liquor, just beer and wine (and not many choices of either). Not many seats, but they point out that there are TVs through the venue. The projection just made the band look like the Wiggles on acid...also poor quality. Parking is difficult (we parked at the church across the street). They'd have to have a hell of a band that I knew and had heard before and enjoyed to entice me back. A gem of a restaurant, tucked away in the beautiful restored mill buildings in Bethania, NC. You have to go out a little out Winston to get here (down Reynolda Rd) but it's well worth it. A great front porch with outdoor seating or cozy indoor options, this is a wonderful place for a cup of coffee or to get a sandwich and enjoy a leisurely lunch. They also offer a number of beer & wine choices and have outdoor music on Friday & Saturday. I believe it was the owner who was working the day we went for lunch, and she was friendly and upbeat and went the extra mile to check on all the patrons - even brought us a bowl of water for our dog. I had the chicken salad on croissant and my husband had the pimiento cheese panini. It was his 2nd time for lunch here, and he wanted to come back just for this sandwich! (We ended up splitting halves, and I could see why - delicious!) The chicken salad was obviously homemade, and had a nice surprisingly touch of slivered almonds in it. It's maybe a little more than you might pay for sandwiches elsewhere (our bill was $16 for 2 sandwiches and an iced tea) but I think that is well worth it to support a locally owned restaurant that is producing great food and becoming part of a community. I highly recommend making the trip out to Bethania on a sunny afternoon and enjoy lunch on the porch, or come out on a weekend night for their live music. read more

Just returned from Muddy Creek Cafe. This was my second visit and was really to give it a chance after a not very stellar first time. The setting is quite lovely and it is nice to be able to sit outside. The food, however, is such a let down. The ingredients for the sandwiches are okay, processed meat, lettuce, etc.,not very tasty and very meager in the helpings but the bread is just cheap white bread and mine was toasted, cold and hard. My husband's pannini was equally disappointing, oily, lukewarm cheese and bland bread, not sure what happened to the spinach but couldn't find it. Why go to the trouble of opening a cafe if you cannot be bothered with the basics? Fresh, crusty bread, a choice of type, wholewheat, Rye etc., and how hard is it to make sure that service is relatively fast. I am glad that there is live music in the evenings and a pimento cheese taste off but I want a pleasant cafe with good food without waiting 20 to 30 mins. Also is you are going to offer sides, not cheap, greasy chips and limp fruit. This is someone who thought that running a cafe was easy and using cheap ingredients but charging high prices would be acceptable, it's not. read more
