This was a quick trip in during the 2026 Winston Salem Bike Races. It's a nice little spot to have a coffee. The capuchino was great. Mostly serves biscuits which were pretty good. My kids were not fans of the biscuit pastries at all. They thought they were too sour and they love pastries. They did enjoy the gardens and tree house outside! Service was good for how busy it was.

Finally made it over here to krankies after wanting to go for over a year... let me tell you the hype is totally worth it! Such a cool spot! Total industrial vibes inside. The line was crazy long but moved quick and our food came out lightning fast! So many cool details, they sell clothing, alcohol, coffees, cinnamon buns, and, of course their biscuits, which were the main event for us. I cannot rave enough about how delicious the biscuits were, buttery, flaky, HUGE! We got the bluebird, full monty, and the krankies classic, along with a horchata latte and the wedge fries. The horchata was not crazy sweet which I liked, the fries were huge and delicious and the biscuits were out of this world! I will be back on another cheat day for sure!

It's about time I updated my review on Krankies! To be blunt: I love them! Their biscuits and sandwiches and coffee drinks are consistently great every time, and I especially love their blueberry biscuit. If you surprise me with just that, I will thank you with a big hug or a handshake if you prefer! And I do enjoy their space there, especially when it isn't too crowded. It's a vibe, and the staff are super nice too! Their breakfast sandwich is so good too, with a spicy fried chicken, egg, cheese, bacon, and jam perhaps and a side of their sausage gravy to dip - and drink! So good, it's always a consideration in my mind when I'm downtown.

A low light, laidback atmosphere with personal staff who serve you with a smile. The buffalo chicken biscuit may look a little messy, but the flavor is on point and has just the right amount of spice to it to hit your cravings of savory with a touch of heat! The nitro cold brew is a delight and will wake you up in no time! Plenty of seating options along with a sort of quiet/meeting room and outdoor seating. A solid coffee option when you're journeying around the downtown area.

Krankie's is a favorite breakfast/coffee spot of mine in Winston! I mean, who doesn't love fried chicken, biscuits, and coffee? I got the Golden Delicious this time, which has fried chicken, sage, apple butter, bacon, and Gouda. It was very tasty! Loved the combination of flavors. For coffee, I got an iced oat milk latte with their seasonal white chocolate cold foam. Not too sweet which I liked! We sat inside since it was a chilly January day and it was very calm and peaceful for hanging out with my family. The service was quick and friendly too!

I can't believe I haven't written a review for Krankies *self-disappointed sigh* I LOVE Krankies! It's the perfect place for a hearty and tasty meal with a flavorful coffee. This last weekend, a friend and I stopped in after walking the Salem Lake Trail and enjoyed biscuit sandwiches and coffee. I got the Bluebird and my friend got the Dirty South. Besides the sandwiches being only mildly warm, they were delicious. We each also ordered drinks - I got one of the fall flavored drinks (I ordered it hot - it was barely warm, but still very good). We sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful fall day- the seating outside is great and plenty, but there is also tons of seating inside as well. They are quick and call out orders over a speaker you can hear from anywhere (outside or inside) so you don't have to stand and wait for your order to be called. There is a lot of parking nearby - either in the smaller gravel lot they have (a bit bumpy, but it works), street parking, or the parking deck a block away. WARNING: if you go on a weekend, expect a crowd/line and food/drinks won't be super hot because they are in a rush to serve so many guests, but everything will still taste good. If you want hot food/drinks, either get there early or go during the week or during bad weather when it's less busy.

I was corrected, i must have went on a bad day because doing this rerun tour was well worth it. Hot, fresh and season to perfection!

Have you ever had someone tell you to try something because you would "love it," and you think, "Yeah. Ok. Maybe. "? This happened to me recently when my niece was SUPER excited over a biscuit she had from a coffee shop. Yes. A biscuit from a coffee shop. They don't mix in my mind either, so I listened to her excitement, I was happy for her, and because I am THAT Auntie, I even committed (internally) to check it out. After all, if my baby was that excited, I need to see what they're putting in their food anyway. IYKYK So, I make my way down to this Krankie's place. It seems ok. It's a beatnik-looking spot as you leave downtown Winston-Salem. It's a little unexpected, in that, it's quirky for this city. It's dark, moody, a lil' comfy. In addition to a Chai latte with soy milk, served hot, I was obligated to try one of their biscuits. OMG!!! My niece KNEW what she was trying to help her Auntie with, y'all. When I tell you that biscuit, "slapped!" Wooo child. I need to sit down and fan myself just this king about it. I mean, I really need some air really quick. Hot. I don't eat meat, so I had a (Vegan) Chicken Biscuit (they also have Vegan sausage, but that's not the same sausage in their sausage gravy, so be careful!) with egg and cheese, and then I added pimento cheese, plus many packets of my favorite hot sauce (Texas Pete !!!) in the bag. Baaaaaby. Just look at the pitcha! Look at it, now! Does that look like it doesn't taste good? Listennnnn. That biscuit tasted like my Momma or my Grammy rolled that biscuit that morning! It was so good and warm and ummmmm. , everything else was harmonious with it. And EVERYTHING was gigantic. They didn't hold anything back. And this was the PLANT-BASED Chicken, y'all. They have a whole menu of biscuits that have my mouth watering (Lord knows I am not going to eat them!), for stuff I KNOW you are going to love, if you eat meat. My BIL and niece don't miss a chance to stop by the place. Two warnings: #1 It is in "the cut." I drove past the place and the driveway before I found it, and their parking lot is neither paved nor ample. Be ready. #2 It stays busy during downtown lunch time, but they keep it rolling. However, it is one of those places worth standing around for. Bring your patience. I was in and out in less than five minutes, but it took that long because I was new. ‍ Most people love their coffee and chai. The chai for me was just "meh", but I am a tea snob (that's what traveling does to ya ).

Loved this spot for breakfast! It was a quick walk from my hotel. I got the blueberry biscuit chicken sandwich. It was so good and such a great balance of sweet and salty. Although there was a jam on the sandwich, it was a little dry and because it's a biscuit sandwich, it fell apart as I ate it. So quite a messy meal but the flavors were a 10/10. I visited a little later on a weekday so they unfortunately were out of the drink I wanted. They had a lot of coffee options and the service was quick. I took it to go but they had plenty of seating inside and outside.

I need to update my review for Krankies although not much has changed. Still the great coffee and biscuits that you can expect from them. They have changed the room in which you order which I like better because it's more spacious. I love a sweet and salty combo so I went with the bluebird. The biscuit was soft and the toppings were plentiful just like I like it. If the biscuit isn't sloppy I don't want it. My husband got the hangover biscuit with gravy on the side which was also heavenly. I need to stop forgetting about Krankies because their breakfast is elite!

I stopped by Krankies and tried their coffee and chicken biscuit, and it was pretty good. The coffee was smooth, fresh, and had a really nice flavor without being too strong. The biscuit was warm and flaky, and the chicken had a great seasoning with a good crunch. Everything tasted like it was made fresh. The service was quick and friendly, which made the visit even better. And it was pretty busy when i went... Overall, Krankies is definitely a spot I'd come back to for a solid breakfast and a good cup of coffee.

    Caroline S.

The gingerbread cold brew was ok. A little bit watery. The bluebird sandwich was amazing! My husband got the hangover, I didn't get a photo. But the bacon on his was alarming. Almost looked raw. He just took it off and still ate the sandwich. Over all good place. Very long line but got our food quickly.

Bloody Mary and a High Life chaser for some dude named "Skott" with a "k"

My understanding is Krankie's has changed a bit in recent years from a somewhat low-key, hidden local gem serving only coffee to a more mainstream well-known shop that serves food, especially since the recent development in the Innovation District. I only recently moved to the Winston-Salem area, so I never knew that version, but I do think the current Krankie's is pretty nice too. I'm kind of basic in my coffee choices so I'm usually getting an Americano 90% of the time but every Americano I've gotten here has been perfect. The food which is apparently a new addition is where they really shine. They serve a variety of biscuits that have been amazing every time, from a classic style to a spicy "Nashville hot" chicken biscuit. Because I apparently hate my digestive system I usually get a Nashville hot chicken and pair it with a spicy Bloody Mary. I don't say this lightly but their spicy Bloody Mary's are also one of the better ones I've ever had. They also have little chaser bottles of High Life to go with your Bloody Mary or enjoy on its own, which is automatic kudos in my book. As if that's not cool enough, they also have an Art-O-Mat. Overall they are typically pretty busy in the morning, especially on Saturdays, but the service is usually quick, efficient and friendly. I've never had to wait long even during peak hours. The only downside I can think of is things add up here quick and I usually spend a little more than expected. Also their hours are a bit limited and could be longer. But overall this a solid local coffee place that fits the downtown Arts District vibe well, would recommend.

My friend ordered the breakfast burrito, it was huge! For a side she had the sweet potato tots. She let me steal a bite of both and yum! I opted for the Hot Honey Chicken with Pimento Benedict and wow! I was nervous the pimento cheese would be overpowering, but it wasn't at all! It was a nice, creamy complement to the spicy crispy chicken. The hollandaise cut through some of the richness for a pleasant mellower. Prices are reasonable and our waitress was great! The restaurant is larger than it looks but it does get quite crowded. Can't wait to come back here!

This is a solid restaurant with much to offer in the brunch/breakfast area - an area that has become popular and chic, and it almost always means much will be expensive, usual very expensive considering the less than costly menu ingredients that drive food choices here, and other such brunch spots. Brunch is seen as more than just a meal for some folks who are all into what is trendy, and restaurant are aware of this and prices are raised due to the "experience" element! I have tried several items here including their version of Huevos Rancheros (not a fan of how they make it, pulled pork is a party foul), the Eggs Benedict (decent but over priced for sure, $17 with bacon added), and several Omelette choices, can reach $15. This is obviously a popular spot in downtown Winston, but I find it generally overpriced, loud, and the service is inconsistent. I like a good adventure, but somethings simply are not worth the cost! Note that the prices for individual items are written, very lightly with no $ sign to the right of the item. This is done intentionally to make the customer pay less attention to what they spending. Many restaurants are using some form of this approach!

Technically they have to use the same waffle maker so if you are a severe Celiac you should be aware of that, luckily our party member is able to chance very slight cross-contamination so it was not a worry big enough to override the desire for waffles. If it is an issue for you, they offer pancakes instead so you can still have a treat. We did not experience any ill-effects but your mileage may vary of course. Both the gluten free and standard breakfast options were terrific, it seems like everything was made in-house. We will absolutely be back. It seems like they have some limitations on how much of certain foods they can turn out (for example, they probably only have a handful of waffle makers) so it did take a little while to get our food. This isn't uncommon for brunch at many places but I don't know what it's like during dinner service so I can't speak to that. The place itself is beautiful, it looks like an old home or B&B and it's got a cozy charm. My only complaint was the Mimosa price being a bit high and the drink itself just being a standard cava+orange juice. I'd love to see $2 knocked off the Mimosa price if I could choose, but otherwise everything was so good. Finally, do get a reservation or be prepared to wait during the top hours.

We called ahead last week to reserve a table for 8 but it ended up being just the 6 of us. They still sat us at a nice oversized table (almost too large) in a semi-private room which was a pleasant surprise. Our waiter Brandon was very nice and friendly, prompt with orders, and always checking back in regularly. He also offered some suggestions on personal and fan favorites (shrimp and grits, beignets) I can't resist flight options when they're on the menu, so I had to go with the mimosa flight. I tried the sunrise, tropical, and Tiffany (OJ/tequila, bacardi/coconut/pineapple, and lemonade / blue zest). My favorite was actually the Tiffany even though I'm not a huge fan of lemonade, it was light and refreshing and crisp/chill, exactly how I love it. The other two were tasty but not as cold - I asked for ice - but probably because they're made with tequilas that aren't refrigerated. For our entrees, we got an assortment of benedicts, salads, and chicken/waffles. I personally had the pork belly benedict. The pork belly itself was really good and the poached eggs were perfectly runny, but as a whole, it fell a little flat, just didn't quite deliver the entire burst of flavor I was hoping for. It was not bad by any means, I think it just needed a/more sauce or something. All in all though, we had a great time and would definitely return. Pricing is pretty fair/standard as well. I could definitely be tempted by the martini or margarita flight next time as well as the beignets which we totally forgot about after the waiter initially suggested them!

The hotel did not disclose this issue before check-in or at the time of booking. By the time I learned of the problem, my family had already settled into our rooms. I was traveling with a screaming infant, and the room temperatures reached approximately 90°F. Despite these conditions, the hotel did not provide fans, portable cooling units, or any meaningful accommodations to help guests cope with the heat. I had specifically requested that my two rooms be located next to each other when making the reservation, but that request was not honored. The staff was neither accommodating nor empathetic regarding the situation. I called the front desk several times to express my concerns. The gentleman with the beard who assisted me appeared indifferent to the seriousness of the situation and repeatedly stated that there was nothing that could be done. While I understand that he may not have been able to repair the air conditioning, the hotel could have offered a refund or another reasonable accommodation so that my family could relocate to a hotel with functioning air conditioning. No such option was offered. As a result, we were unable to sleep and experienced significant discomfort, including headaches and nausea due to the excessive heat. It is especially concerning that the hotel was aware the air conditioning was inoperable but failed to disclose this before guests checked in. Following our stay, I sent multiple emails to both CN Hotels and The Hawthorne Inn & Conference Center's reservations department regarding these serious concerns. To date, I have received no response or acknowledgment from either party. I documented the conditions throughout our stay and will be filing complaints with the North Carolina Department of Justice Consumer Protection Division and the Forsyth County Environmental Health Division. Hotels have a responsibility to disclose significant issues, such as the complete loss of air conditioning, before guests arrive so they can make an informed decision about whether to stay. Failing to disclose this information during an extreme heat wave, while refusing to offer a refund or reasonable accommodations, falls well below the level of customer service and transparency that guests should expect.
