This is our Sunday Brunch experience - phenomenal. We were looking for something new and discovered that Founders has brunch with Gluten Free chicken and waffles which is something we haven't found in North Carolina yet. Technically they have to use the same waffle maker so if you are a severe Celiac you should be aware of that, luckily our party member is able to chance very slight cross-contamination so it was not a worry big enough to override the desire for waffles. If it is an issue for you, they offer pancakes instead so you can still have a treat. We did not experience any ill-effects but your mileage may vary of course. Both the gluten free and standard breakfast options were terrific, it seems like everything was made in-house. We will absolutely be back. It seems like they have some limitations on how much of certain foods they can turn out (for example, they probably only have a handful of waffle makers) so it did take a little while to get our food. This isn't uncommon for brunch at many places but I don't know what it's like during dinner service so I can't speak to that. The place itself is beautiful, it looks like an old home or B&B and it's got a cozy charm. My only complaint was the Mimosa price being a bit high and the drink itself just being a standard cava+orange juice. I'd love to see $2 knocked off the Mimosa price if I could choose, but otherwise everything was so good. Finally, do get a reservation or be prepared to wait during the top hours. read more

Another solid brunch spot in WS. I came here yesterday for Sunday brunch with a group of friends before seeing a matinee theater show. This was a great start to the day. We called ahead last week to reserve a table for 8 but it ended up being just the 6 of us. They still sat us at a nice oversized table (almost too large) in a semi-private room which was a pleasant surprise. Our waiter Brandon was very nice and friendly, prompt with orders, and always checking back in regularly. He also offered some suggestions on personal and fan favorites (shrimp and grits, beignets) I can't resist flight options when they're on the menu, so I had to go with the mimosa flight. I tried the sunrise, tropical, and Tiffany (OJ/tequila, bacardi/coconut/pineapple, and lemonade / blue zest). My favorite was actually the Tiffany even though I'm not a huge fan of lemonade, it was light and refreshing and crisp/chill, exactly how I love it. The other two were tasty but not as cold - I asked for ice - but probably because they're made with tequilas that aren't refrigerated. For our entrees, we got an assortment of benedicts, salads, and chicken/waffles. I personally had the pork belly benedict. The pork belly itself was really good and the poached eggs were perfectly runny, but as a whole, it fell a little flat, just didn't quite deliver the entire burst of flavor I was hoping for. It was not bad by any means, I think it just needed a/more sauce or something. All in all though, we had a great time and would definitely return. Pricing is pretty fair/standard as well. It honestly gets most of its points for the aesthetic. You're dining in an old colonial-style building, which has a centuries-old feel. For plenty of people, this alone is enough to go. They seem to be having trouble getting enough employees. If you go on a Sunday morning (with a reservation), prepare to be waiting awhile, and I mean just for your drinks. I've been three times, and had the same service experience. The food is 'pretty good'. I wouldn't call it special. Bear in mind that I go at breakfast and I have dietary restrictions that prevent me from eating pork, which reduces the options. I attended a special event here recently and it was amazing all the way around! The food was on point, creative and tasty. I also visited the bar and bought a cute little drink called a Cherry bomb. It was made from prosecco, strawberry juice and served w a "cloud" of white cotton candy balanced on a cocktail stick like it was a cloud over my drink. The bomb part was when you dropped it in your drink. Fun. Staff is on point and eager to help. Beautiful old house turned into an inn and restaurant, there was live piano music playing while we had brunch at around 10am on Sunday. Our server was quick and cheerful! Lovely vibe, but the real reason for 5 stars is the shrimp and grits which I requested to be made without bacon and sausage. It is served with 2 crostinis. Excellent dish, highly recommend. Other notes: They don't serve espresso drinks here. We called up to say we couldn't find parking and were instructed to park across the street at another parking lot. Finally made it to Sunday brunch ! Been dying to try this place after all the reviews I'd seen. Set in a historic bed and breakfast inn in downtown Winston Salem, Founders is a neat gem different from all the usual Sunday brunch spots. Yes the menu is pretty standard with a few exceptions but just nice to be not in a A typical restaurant setting. The house itself is beautiful! We got there right at our reservation time and had to wait a bit for our table. I've seated we had the freezing AC vent under the table which is under pretty much every table. We put stuff on it to keep the air down. Noticed a lot of others had done the same! This was the only part I didn't love . Suggest bringing something to wear to not get cold or wear pants !!! They have some neat mimosa choices on the menu but I stuck with the Prosecco by itself! The flight looked really nice though. We got the truffle fries as an appetizer even though technically it's a side ! Yum ! I love the double coating on these ! I ordered the smoked salmon Benedict. This was really good. Nice amount of house made hollandaise, eggs were slightly over done but still good. Came with a little fruit too. The salmon was really nice. My friend had the fried oyster salad. She loved it and it had more oysters than the 6 they say on the menu. Looked really good and fresh. We had the beignets as our dessert. These were nice and hot served with caramel and raspberry sauces. Not the cakey kind more flaky. Delicious! A total must order! Our server was really nice and the place was just a nice old time place. They have parking and overflow parking across the street. Glad I finally got here. I didn't realize the restaurant was a B&B that used to have a different name, so I initially passed by it. Circled the block and pulled in to park. Upon entry, I was greeted but wasn't asked how I could be helped. I located my girlfriend who had arrived before me and had already been seated. Once seated, the server returned to the table and asked if we'd like anything other than water. They answered our many questions about the food and drinks. We ultimately both ordered the Shrimpn and grits based on the description, online reviews, and the server's recommendation. I also ordered the Mermaid Mimosa, and my friend ordered the Shaffner Mimosa. The Mermaid Mimosa was just ok. It was very pretty, but again, it was just ok. I could taste all of the additives and artificial flavors of the mixers and liquor. Although I drank it slowly, it gave me a headache. My friend enjoyed her drink. The shrimp and grits came out fast!! We only got like 3 or 4 shrimp with the dish, but there were also slices of sausage. I wish the temperature was a little warmer, but the flavors were excellent. It had a little bit of a spice kick, which is how I prefer my shrimp and grits. The overall serving size was just enough, and at $13, I had no complaints. After eating and paying the check, the server invited us to freely tour the rest of the space as we may consider staying at its B&B or using one of their spaces for an event. We decided to do an anniversary brunch instead of our usual dinner and my wife chose Founders. Located DTWS It was a little tricky to find due to the one way streets and is located on the other side of Cherry Street. There is a small lot for parking and a nice water feature as you walk up. The restaurant is in a converted old home from the looks and had several dining areas but we were on the glassed in porch which was a nice sitting area. Our server Gary came and took our order and made sure our drinks were filled. I ordered the Texas Pete chicken and Waffle (not waffles...came with one) for $14 at the time. My wife ordered a classic eggs Benedict (that came out incorrectly the first time). She said her dish was only warm and salty. My dish was better but should have had another waffle I mean seriously how much is a waffle to add to the ONE waffle served with the dish. We decided to celebrate our 26th wedding anniversary with a nice brunch. Founders is a beautiful Tudor Revival home turned into restaurant and event place. It truly was very nice inside and out with table linens and beautiful coffee/tea cups. Now the food....wellllllll .....my husband said his chicken and waffles were ok but I was disappointed in my classic eggs Benedict. It was salty, Luke warm with two lifeless English muffins. So very "meh". I took a bite of my husband's waffle and it was a good batter so now I know...when you come here, stick to the pancakes and waffles. They offer gluten free options as well. It's a lovely location in a beautiful old house. We made a reservation and although our table was ready they didn't seat us until almost 30 minutes later. Clearly understaffed because it was another 15 minutes until our waitress came to get drink orders. Most of our food was cold by the time we got it. There was a request for butter that never came and no checking if everything was ok. I felt bad for our server as she clearly had too many tables to cover. Got the chance to eat at Founders today for brunch and it was delicious! We got shrimp n grits which were creamy, thick, and had tons of flavor. There were plump shrimp and spicy andouille sausage! YUM! The avocado toast of the day was a Greek style and had feta, tzatziki, pickled red onions, olives and crumbled spices. It was absolutely my favorite! Our table also got the waffles, chicken and waffles and a few other cocktails and overall everything was fresh, had a ton of flavor and large portions. A few of my girlfriends and I have had our eye on Founders Restaurant inside Shaffner Inn since they opened, and we finally got a chance to try them this past weekend! I will start the review by saying that our waitress and the manager let us know that their head chef plus other wait staff were sick, so they were severely understaffed. With that in mind, our group was super patient with the service which turned out to be pretty good considering the circumstances. The only complaint is that our waitress said we would get our cocktails before our meal came out and it all came out together. There were definitely bright spots within our visit. The pear and cinnamon mimosa I had was great! The fried chicken with the chicken and waffles was crispy and juicy and the entire shrimp and grits dish was so good. I would definitely order that as my entree upon every visit. I thought the waffle was just okay. Nothing special. The coffee could use a little sprucing as it had a metallic taste that you often times find in diner coffee. The monte cristo completely threw me off. It is a stretch to call a piece of fried ham and cheese on top of a waffle a monte cristo so I probably wouldn't order that again. The space in which we dined was absolutely beautiful. It gave me major "sun room" vibes with the big open windows. I also loved the fact that our food was plated beautifully on vintage dishes. Overall our experience was good! We came here on a Sunday morning and, since we weren't sure what time we were going to arrive, showed up without reservations. Pro tip: make reservations if possible. Fortunately for us, a party cancelled and we were able to get squeezed in. Which is great, because as we were waiting to hear from the staff about a table, we saw tray after tray of amazing food walk past and would have been highly disappointed if we had missed out! I ordered the chicken and waffles and, wow, it was amazing. It very well may be the best I've ever had. There was a little kick to it but it wasn't overpowering, and the honey was a great sweet touch. I added a side of grits and they were delicious! My wife got the avocado toast which looked like something out of a magazine or cooking show. She said it was good but not great and would probably order something else next time. We had a kid free lunch and stopped in on a Sunday around 1pm, not expecting to stay without a reservation. However, we were seated in about 10 mins. I was surprised there wasn't a bar to wait for a table and the restaurant is only the porch area of the home (indoor and outdoor). We were served by Brandon who was fantastic! After seeing multiple Instagram posts about this new brunch spot, I had to check it out! As always, I check out the menu ahead of time. The menu was a little limited, but the pictures looks so good I had to try it out! I went to brunch on Saturday morning with three of my friends. It was a very chilly morning and we were seated right by the door and also beside a window, so it was freezing! I do recommend asking for an indoor seating option if you are going during the fall or winter months. I was super excited to see the Mimosa menu because I am totally a Mimosa girl! I tried the pear cinnamon mimosa and then I found out about a secret menu item Mimosa, and of course I had to try that! Both of them were absolutely amazing! The Barbie mimosa, which was the secret menu item, was equipped with a bow and swirling glitter inside. There were several other drinks I wanted to try, but a girl can only fit so much after that great brunch! I ordered the open faced Montecristo waffle. I really had a hard time picking what to order! Luckily my friends ordered the other items I was thinking so I got to try a little bit of everything. I can personally attest that the Montecristo waffle, chicken and waffle, and shrimp and grits are all amazing! I highly recommend trying out this restaurant. We were looking for a good brunch spot for my wife's birthday when we came across Founders and saw their mimosa selection. We called Wednesday and made reservations for Saturday. We had a fairly large group planning to attend, around 13 people. But the person on the phone did not say they wouldn't be able to accommodate a group that size and even told her we'd be seated in the sunroom. We all arrived at 1230 on the day of and the staff looked at us like a deer in headlights when we told them we had a reservation for 13. First they told us that this was the first time they were hearing of the reservation at all. Later they said they were told is it was a reservation for 10, and it was taken by one of their very new part-time workers. It ended up being about a 25 minute wait from when we walked in the door until we were seated. The staff was all very nice and were apologetic about the situation. The manager even came out of her office and personally apologized to my wife as this was her birthday brunch. The manager told us she would make sure this was taken care of. We kind of assumed they might comp a mimosa or something small, but they did not. After we placed our food order, they mentioned they have a small kitchen so due to our party size it would not all come out at the same time. No big deal. Still took over an hour for anyone to get any food. And when it did come out, people were getting side dishes but not their main dish, or their main dish and not their side, but their side would be delivered to the other side of the table to someone who didn't get their main dish. It just didn't make much sense and seemed disorganized. I ordered the club grinder with a side of French fries. The food itself is the biggest reason why the rating is still on the higher side. You'd think a club is a club, how can they vary that much. But the quality of the ingredients used was top notch. The bacon was thick cut, cooked well, and peppery. The garlic aioli was delicious, and the Swiss cheese was fresh. The French fries were nice and crispy as well. When we had finished, we all were kind of confused as to were the entire staff went as we hadn't seen any of them in some time. We were all ready for the check and ready to just leave, but ended up having to wait another 20 minutes for them to come back and start the process of paying. Overall the food was great, but the whole process was an ordeal and disorganized. I'd like to come back and give them another chance at some point because the food was so good. We went to 8:30 reservation for Valentines Day breakfast. Party of 4. Place was actually pretty empty other than a few other tables. I went to Shaffner House once before it became Founders for tea service, and it was fine. This was also fine but disappointing. I do believe there was only one staff person working. It took her a few minutes when we came in to appear and seat us. She was the server for every table. She referenced someone in the back cooking but was not the head chef and apparently incapable of poaching an egg. Also, the menu was very limited, and one or two items not available, including the stuffed French toast that at least 2/4 of us had planned to order. I got the waffle and coffee. I drink black coffee fine but was not even offered cream/sugar. Also took a long time to get a refill on that and took a long time for our food to come out. Didn't see the server/hostess that entire time, which leads me to believe she may have been cooking as well. Poor lady was very sweet too though despite obviously being overworked. Waffle was about the most basic thing I ever ate, but it was fine. Thankfully we were in good company and had nice conversation. read more

The theme was "the Bride is on Cloud 9" I was able to choose many options from the menu-most of the guests chose the croque madame, as well as the braised short rib and grilled cheese with tomato bisque. Checked out this place for the first time today. Food was pretty good. We ordered the Chicken and Waffles and a Classic Eggs Benedict. The Chicken and Waffles were really good! The Benedict was decent, but the hollandaise was a bit too citrusy for my liking. The only thing that brought this rating down was the HORRENDOUS service we received from our server. Don't get me wrong, the servers serving the tables around us were doing a great job! Ours on the other hand left us waiting for 37 minutes from the time we sat down to when she came to ask for our order, and it would've been longer, had we not asked someone where our server was. The restaurant itself was not particularly busy either, as half the tables were empty. She also did not come to check in on us throughout our meal. Came here for brunch on a Saturday. Seeing the reviews, I made sure to call ahead of time and snag a 9:45 reservation. HIGHLY recommend this because they were pretty strict about the reservation policy. The interior was absolutely beautiful, and we had a great time exploring the building while waiting to be seated. After being seated, my friends and I caught up on life and realized it had been 20 minutes... at this point, no one had come to to introduce themselves as our server. At the thirty minute mark, my friend went up to the hostess to ask for us to be served. Mind you, it was barely 10:30 AM and not particularly busy - in fact, it was just our table and 3 or 4 other tables who were finishing up. Our server came shortly after and took our orders. We each got a drink and were pleasantly surprised with how good they were! I got the Lavender Lily, which was served with a stem of lavender. The drink itself was super yummy and bubbly, but I got annoyed with the lavender tickling my nose and had to remove it. In terms of food, I ordered the chicken and waffles, which was fantastic! The chicken was flavorful and juicy, and the waffle was a great accompaniment. My partner had the Classic Benedict, and we both agreed that while the eggs were poached well, the hollandaise was a touch too citrusy. Here's where the lower rating comes - our service was abhorrent. As someone who has worked in the service industry, I completely understand that brunch service can get busy and overwhelming, especially if you are understaffed. However, there were no more than 3 tables when we were seated, yet I saw the other 2 servers more than I saw ours. We had to ask physically get up and ask for our server twice, once after we were seated, and again 25 minutes after our server took all of our plates away and gave us to-go boxes... I'm sorry, but how long was she going to wait after that until she came with the check had we not asked? I really wanted to love this place; it's conveniently located in downtown WS, and the venue is beautiful and made me feel much fancier than I really am. However, after spending almost more time waiting for our server than we did eating, I'm hesitant to recommend this establishment to any of my friends. Brunch was picturesque in the enclosed patio and sun room overlooking a winter garden at Founders Restaurant inside of @shaffnerinn in downtown Winston-Salem this afternoon. If you stay in one of the few rooms available, brunch is included. The daffodils are in full bloom We ordered some hot tea and chose our brunch items: Brown Butter Oatmeal with a biscuit and bacon, Eggs Benedict with a Yogurt Parfait, and a waffle with sausage patties. The atmosphere was cozy and warm with the sun warming us through the windows. The temperature has already started to drop outside as we prepare for a severely cold day tomorrow. We poked around on the way to the restroom and enjoyed the beauty of the woodwork and architecture of this old house that also serves as a bed and breakfast. There is a large patio and French doors that open and connect the outside with the interior on warmer days. This would be lovely in the spring and summer. Located in the former Flour Box Tea Room, Founders adds a fresh new vibe to the Winston-Salem brunch scene. We sat in the enclosed patio area with huge windows and plenty of natural light which was wonderful on a rainy Sunday morning. We ordered mimosas which unfortunately, arrived late at the same time our food arrived. Each dish was very colorful and flavorful! Several members of our group ordered the shrimp and grits including myself and I thought they were really great! The grits were creamy and cheesy and garlicky. Since they are fairly new it gets really crowded, we've attempted before to go without reservation, and we weren't so lucky and had to wait until next week. Secondly, parking is pretty tight. They do have a small parking lot beside the building. However, you can also park across the street at the Hawthorn Inn Hotel parking lot as it's permitted(not much of a walk but becareful crossing the road as it's right up the exit from the highway). Once we got inside, we were seated immediately, and service was a little busy as we ended up going on the day of "brunch with santa" so the menu was limited and couldn't really enjoy the full menu as planned. However, they still had a good little variety on their menu and cocktails. Started off with the cocktails like the shaffner sunrise mimosa, which was amazing and for breakfast I ordered a avocado toast and eggs, with a side of potatoes and an enormous waffle, and it all tasted great. I was able to try the New Orleans grits and shrimp(not pictured) from a a friend who ordered, since I'm not a fan of grits I didn't order, but that tasted amazing and I wish I would have ordered it. Overall, the food was good, again its busy, so waiting on food and drinks did take a little while, but they were great. read more

I took my mom here for her birthday while we visited WS. The restaurant was reserved for guests only when we visited, not sure if that's still the case. It's a beautiful B&B and we enjoyed our food and the staff was incredibly friendly! read more

My wife found this place on Yelp and we gave it a try. I'm so glad we did. The atmosphere was very interesting being surrounded and dining in a large early 1900's home. The food was top notch and I dare say one of the best shrimp and grits I've had from Baltimore to New Orleans. It was pleasantly upscale, but relaxed enough that my 9yr old really enjoyed it. My wife loved her meal, so the entire family was very happy with all the meals we ordered. Our waiter, Gary, was fantastic. It doesn't matter how good the food is, if the service doesn't match then the entire establishment can't reach their full potential. Gary definitely did that. He helped take an extraordinary venue and meal and push it over the top. I have nothing but great things to say about the place. read more

Had a beautiful delayed birthday brunch here recently. We made reservations about 2 weeks in advance and our experience was fantastic. Garry, our server was quick, attentive and overall made our time at Founders exceptional. The food was very tasty and the shrimp and grits and chicken and waffles were my favorite. They have great cocktails as well, the Bloody Mary is beautiful and I loved my Shaffner Spritz. We also had the opportunity to walk around and check out the space after our brunch. It is tasteful and definitely worth seeing. Overall, we would definitely return for a fun, beautiful brunch with a vintage ambiance. read more

This place is so bogus! Brunch is served until 2:00 pm. On a Sunday afternoon around 12:50, I thought I would enjoy a nice brunch to myself...that's right...a party of 1. When I walk in, there is only 1 party on the patio and plenty of empty seats inside as well. I got turned away because I did not have a reservation. I won't ever come to this place again! read more
