Now Known As: City Center Pizza Quick Lunch Specials $6.99 for a 10" Combo Pizza (Already made - just need to popp in oven) and a 12 oz fountain drink or bottled water. I had the Pepperoni, Sausage & Spinach Pie. Its a thin crunchy crust pie. The crust has a nice crunch but nothing to write home about. Crust reminds me of a saltine type cracker...wished it was a bit more bready. The big plus is that it only took 5 minutes to get it heated up and me out the door. Mr. Pizza Man - Best pizza in Oakland, so I don't know where all these 1-star reviews are coming from, probably out of town folks in my opinion. - Pizza Near Me - Oakland, California

One of the originals! Great food for over 20 years. Fantastic flavor and service. I love them.

Mr. Pizza Man offers a "10 personal pizza with 4 toppings and a soda for 5.99. too good to be true? in my case, yes. ordering -when customizing my pizza, was told it would take 25 minutes. -clerk suggested a premade one -picked one with lots of freshly sliced mushrooms atop melted cheese. -about 5 minutes later, it was "ready" -turns out most of mushrooms not cooked yet -only thick crust heated up. -waste of $5 crumbs: -since they are busy, doubt they cook all pizzas the same. (repeat business) -pizza had little taste outside the parmasan cheese and chili pieces i put on it. -pizza very doughy-thick crust, 1/4"? -couldn't taste the cheese nor mushrooms. -the lemonade was just sugar water.... read more

what's a great way to motivate a team? PIZZA. (or any food the rest of the teammates don't have to pay for) and i needed to find a pizza place in downtown oakland. quite a difficult search considering downtown oakland=chinatown. so yelp helped a great deal. parking is a biatch cuz there is none. it's either the underground parking garage at $2 every 20mins, or metered parking too many blocks away. since i was rushing to get to my meeting with the team, i chose the garage. anyway, mr. pizza man is hidden behind the wells fargo bank, next to some deli, in front of a crepe shop, close to 12th street, but not quite on the street itself. it's there. somewhere. i ordered a medium, 1/2veggie, 1/2 mission special. mission special is basically pepperoni and sausage...not that special. i was in-and-out in about 25 minutes, less $20. so i got in late to class, pizza balanced on one hand, bag slung around my arm, books and laptop on the other. and as soon as i walked in, all eyes on me...or at least, all eyes on the pizza box. i find my team and they grabbed that box and devoured a couple slices each. the rest of the class just stared. jealous? yea i would be too... the pizza was delicious!! the veggie is good. i think i only saw artichokes on my slice. big huge cuts of artichokes. and i think there was a creamy pesto sauce in it. i also liked the crust. not too tough and not too chewy either. the mission special was too salty for me. and the grease... that's what makes a good pizza, no? to sum up: a slice of pizza gave me 5 hours of focused work from my team. how's that for managing skills! read more

Check my credentials ！ I mangae black scale SF so I know what customer service is, I ordered a calzone which imo is very good. After two hours (I ended up going to jack in the box) they finally delivered it. The lady who takes the online orders had the nerve to get mad at me. Threaten me. And take back my order. Calzones are good but service is horrible. If u want to support bad service and negative attitudes the. Feel free to order. I've spent at least $300 with them but never again until they get rid of their 3rd party online service. That lady is trash and I will not EVER do business with them again. Please order early from a business that treats their customers correctly. read more

Yelpers, where's the love? This is the business. I go to school at Laney (sometimes) and have about an hour or so in between some classes and I'm not that into the food nearby (i.e., the hot dog carts). I usually walk it out over to the Oakland City Center where there is food I can trust. I usually do Top Dog (right, cause I'm sooo above the hot dog stand at Laney? I see the irony) or a varient of the fast food in the square, but have never tried Mr. Pizza Man yet. Mr. Pizza Man, you are one sultry beast. I'm sorry I ever doubted you. Mr. Pizza Man is somewhat hidden off to the side of City Center and was very cute. They do the personal 10 inch pizzas and drink meals which were fairly decently priced. What they do is they make the tiny pizzas, have them sitting staggered on stands behind some glass, then you pick out (you HAND PICK your pizza) and they get it all toasty for you. The actual pizza man (the real Mr. Pizza Man?!) was very polite and smiley. The girl behind the counter was VERY friendly and jokey. They made me happy. They know how to set a tone and know how to give up some good service. But you care about the pizza, dontcha? The personal pizza was VERY filling. It was amazing. I got a standard pepperoni (I was too tired from mid-terms to be exciting) and it was well cooked, the ingridients tasted fresh, and was not greasy (which is VERY impressive for a fast pizza spot). I'm actually going back today, and I am freaking stoked. read more

I work near this place and I come in frequently for lunch. I love them. I get the lunch special (10" pizza with drink) and the pizza is always fresh and hot. They just expanded so the prices went up a bit, which I would take half a star off for if I could, but it doesn't seem worth a whole star. Business is business. I get that. What sets this place apart for me is the staff. It is always the same guys behind the pizza bar and they are super friendly and accommodating and, as a customer, it's nice to be recognized by the people you are regularly giving your money to. They also allow you to add some extra toppings to the pre-made pizzas, which I always take advantage of. NOTE: When they expanded, they changed their name. It's now called city center pizza, or something along those lines, but I'll always know them as mr. Pizza man. read more

I am not sure of the complaints made on the negative reviews because first of all this is not a gourmet pizza shop and it's basically catered to being accessible, fast and cheap. I love the pizza guy that is there in the evening he is always so happy upbeat and friendly. I once wanted to order off the menu when he suggested that I should do the $5.99 special with a drink. I am not picky and I know what I pay for so for $5.99 I got a $5.99 pizza..I didn't even really care if they made one fresh (they offered) but the ones on display looked decent. The open late as well, probably the only place in the city center to be opened later so a plus. The pizza was decent. Cheesy..hot and hit the spot. No real complaints other than my weight scale at home. If you want a quick bite and craving pizza.then try it out. If you are expecting your pizza palate to be tantalized then you probably should skip out..as this ain't no Cheese Board Pizzza. read more

This place is weird. The interior is grungy, and half the patrons are high school kids, some of whom I'd be afraid to meet in a dark East Oakland alley. But the slice and soda is cheap and tasty, and they have an extensive menu of other foods (vegetarian pesto pasta; jalapeno poppers; wings, and more) - that you can order ONLINE. Go figure. The workers are friendly (kind of remind me of NY pizza guys - who knows, maybe they were in a former lifetime), the slice and soda is fast but the other foods take a little more time. And prices are decent. Pretty much the only place to get food like this (to fill your stomach) in downtown Oakland, especially under 10 minutes and at this price. read more

Where should I even start! I have tons of good things to say about this store. I buy lunch special pizza from them very often. Individual size pizza 5.99+tax along with a can of soda or bottle water. Where else can you get deals like this? Also, you can add up to 4 toppings. The owner is very generous when adding toppings... sometimes, I think my pizza is more like a mountain instead of a flat pizza... This is not the end, buy 5 pizza, and you will get the 6th one for free! More motivation... All of these are based on great quality too! I know I've been talking about quantities, but the quality of the pizza is great! The crust is crunchy, and the pizza isn't too thick or thin... just the way I like it. The owner is super welcoming too! Always greed you with smile, and make you feel like home! Strongly re commanded! read more

Unprofessionals, liars, late, beware.. This is the worst service I have ever gotten in my life. We ordered pizza online where the instructions says they will call us with in 10-15 minutes to confirm.. 1- they never called us to confirm 2- when I called after about 30 minutes they guy says they are on their way.. Liar 3- it took them 2 hours to deliver... 4- Delivered the wrong thing... we ordered all vegies.. we got all pork Pepperoni.. the room stunk like hell.. I called to tell them and they sent the driver back to pick up the pizza and I took my $5 tip back... I am still worried about my credit card if they will still charge it. read more

I love this place for lunch! During lunchtime in city center you see people all over the place carrying their personal pizza boxes. How it works is that they pre-cook a bunch if different personal pizzas during lunch time and put them on cooling racks for display. You just walk in the door, point to the one that you want, and they'll put it back in the oven to heat it up for you. It's very quick and convenient. Not sure why, but I'm a big fan of the simplicty of this system. Maybe not the freshest way to do things, but they're busy so the pizza doesn't sit there for too long. It's a good deal for only like $6-7 for a personal pizza with a soda. The ingredients are good quality, and the pizzas are always very tasty. You know it's good dough because by the end of the pizza. your jaw is tired as hell. That only seems to happen when you eat a good pizza dough. Almost feels like some sort of work out. Oh yeah, the people are friendly too, which is nice. read more

(Originally reviewed, May '08 @ Pizza Man, Oakland) I was exposed to Mr Pizza Man when I worked in Redwood City many years ago. It is there that I got hooked on their chicken alfredo- pricy, but great stuff, especially when working the graveyard shift. Their phone service though, was seriously bad. Utterly rude people with absolutely NO compunctions about swearing at customers, hanging up on customers, etc. But, it HAD been some years, and this isn't the Redwood City one anyway... my husband and I chanced an order at our place last weekend. I used the oh-so handy online order, and waited to get a call back. After 25 minutes with no confirmation, I called them. The woman answering the phone couldn't give a shit less about my order number, and said she could only look by phone number. Which I gave her. Four times. And she STILL couldn't find my order and told me to give it to her over the phone. I expressed concern because I'd already put an order in and didn't want my credit card charged twice. She assured me that wouldn't happen because she claimed no record of my having placed an order at all, blah blah blah. I place the order, she gives me a price that is eight dollars more than the online system gave me. So we went over the order again and she 'discounted the price' for the hassle. Ended up being two bucks less than the online order. Sure, fine, whatever, I want my damn pizza already! It arrived within the 30 minutes I was promised, the pizza, the salad, the seafood linguini and the ravioli. The toasted cheese ravioli were totally yummy- exactly how I remembered them. The pizza (chicken combo) was okay. Not breathtaking, but perfectly edible. The salad was quite sizable, although they'd ignored my repeated requests for no pepperoncinis, and was pretty much half a head of lettuce with two cucumber slices. The pasta, though was utterly disgusting. Cloying, and not fresh at all. I couldn't eat it at all; literally, the staleness of the shrimp and slightly rancid taste of the alfredo had me near to vomiting. My husband and I eat, I toss the virtually untouched pasta and box up the leftover pizza... someone knocks at the door. In my heart, I know who it is going to be, and I was right. It is another driver from Mr Pizza Man with an exact copy of the order I'd just finished disposing of, with a bill three dollars HIGHER than the one I'd left a tip on an hour ago. He took it bad when I told him someone else had already brought the order. He did not believe me until I showed him the receipt and had him call his manager, who promised to refund the purchase price on my card "as soon as possible". To be fair, that is exactly what he did, five days later, but for the hassle and the low quality of food, I'll pass on ordering from them anymore. read more

Used to work right around the corner and when I was broke I would hit up this location. 3 dollars gets you a fat slice and a soda. We used to always have the lasagna delivered but the past few times it was awful.. I dont know what they did but they need to stop and make it how they used to. But whatever the pizza is pretty damn good, always have coupons or specials going on. They deliver till 3am! Quick note: I wouldn't recommend walking around this place/neighborhood at night, especially if your not from around here... read more

5 stars for: * Great, classic pizza * Excellent price, esp. at lunch time * Charming owner and friendly staff -1 star for: * Charmless location/decor * Confusion with Pizza Man (no "Mr.") at 1422 Broadway * Unfortunate bedfellows That last bullet point requires an explanation. The Oakland Mr. Pizza Man has a business card raffle: prize is a free large pizza. I won. Weeks later, when I was finally ready to order my winning pie and ride it home on BART, I found the toll-free number for Mr. Pizza Man at mrpizzaman.com and gave it a ring. Guy: Hello? Me: Uh, yeah, I won a free pizza in the raffle and... Guy: We don't have free pizza. [click!] Me: ? I called again: Guy: Hello? Me: Hi, I'm trying to get the number for the Oakland restaurant. I won a free pizza there and... Guy: We don't have raffles. [click!] Me: WTF?! !*%$& So I took a long coffee break, walked down to Pizza Man...argh! I mean _Mr._ Pizza Man...and placed my order in person. As always, the owner at *this* location was extremely friendly, exactly the opposite of what I'd experienced with the hot line. He even agreed to close up slightly later than usual in order as I had a late business meeting that evening. You know the chiropractor played by Danny Aiello in Jacob's Ladder who seems like he might be part of the demon world Jacob's stuck in, but then turns out to be his guardian angel? In this scenario, the Mr. Pizza Man franchise is the demon world, and the _Oakland_ Mr. Pizza Man is the guardian angel. read more

The big plus is the delivery. They can deliver to my work (I work by the Coliseum) and they can deliver in the early morning hours. But the pizza was overpriced and while it tasted good, the pizza itself was sloppy and didn't sit too well in my stomach. read more

I have friends that have had a bad experience there and said the workers had to warm up to them but honestly I can understand why...because the area they are in its so much drama and foolishness I can imagine what the workers see and deal with everyday in that location and I know I for one ...could not do it. but as for my own experiences I've been in there a few times and they were always really nice to me and gave me really good service. I was totally caught off guard. read more

There seems to be some confusion about which restaurant is being reviewed here. Mr. Pizza Man is a tiny pizza place located inside the City Center in downtown Oakland. It is open Monday - Saturday 11AM - 10PM. They serve a very nice, thin crust style pizza. Pizza Man (note: no Mr.), is located accross Broadway and up 1/2 a block from City Center. They are open everyday 10AM - 3AM. They serve a thicker crust pizza. The place is always crowded with school kids and it's dark and dirty. You can get a slice and a drink for something like $3, thus the kids. (For the record, I'd only give that restaurant one star.) Mr. Pizza Man is a relatively new restaurant, at least in this location. It is clean, and they are friendly, and have fresh ready made personal style pizzas for an good price ($5 with a drink). You can get your pizza to order as well, but as noted by others, prepare to wait. I'd say Mr. Pizza Man is the best pizza in the area. Still, I'd rather be in Italy. read more

I like their delivery. Fairly fast. I've ordered the Veggie Special a few times and I really like it. The "Regular" crust is nice and chewy and I really like their sauce. Delightfully cheesy and greasy... everything I want a pizza to be. read more

Mr. Pizza Man delivered to my hotel room at about 2am. I wasn't expecting much, as the delivery of food at that hour alone would make it perfectly acceptable to hand over a mediocre pie. I got a pretty dang good pizza out of the deal, as it turns out. I like a thin crust, my bf likes a thick crust, and Mr. Pizza Man's meets right in the middle so there were no fist fights this time. I like a lot of cheese and he likes a lot of sauce and we again found a happy medium so gunfire was kept to a minimum. The spicy wings were a letdown and the delivery guy didn't bring pepper flakes so at that point there was no choice but to pull a Keith Moon on our hotel room. Luckily, firemen also make late-night deliveries so casualties were low. read more

There are a bunch of pre-made personal pizzas, some good some, some questionable. Pretty mediocre, I wouldn't go out of my way for this. I see a lot of people trickling in during the lunch hour because it's fast and cheap. read more

Update: Thought I'd give them a second chance. The pizza came raw. They refused to re-deliver my food or refund me.

Ripped me off. Stopped in for lunch. Ordered a personal pizza combo #2 which ended up costing $8.69. They took my order and my cash. Gave me the salad and bottled water. I waited for the pizza...and waited...and waited. Finally, I asked and they said I didn't order. They said I would have to order and pay. So, I left without pizza and $8.69. In looking at the yelp reviews, I now see that I am not the first one to have this happen. Don't patronize places that rip people off. read more

Some of you are confusing two restaurants, BOTH are called MR PIZZA MAN, and one is on Broadway and 14th and the other is right nearby in Civic Center Plaza. The former have the doughy thick slices with a drink for 3 bucks and the latter has the personal pizzas and drink for $6.51. Both places have okay food for the really cheap prices, but the one in Civic Center has the coolest, genuine, I think Brazillian pizza man you will ever meet, like a Hollywood character, I love the guy. "How you do? Good, good. Whatta I getta you? Ah, I make-a the pizza justa for you, eh?" No kiddin, he's a riot. read more

perhaps there is a stigma attached to crossing 14th street to get from city center to the other mr pizza man location. so why not open a mr pizza man inside the city center itself. that way, people don't have to walk as far and have less opportunity to burn off the fat and calories from their lunch... right... anyway, if it's one of those days when you simply want to get something to eat during lunch and simply don't care about what you're eating, this is the place. as this place caters to the city center lunch crowd, its specialty are personal eight-inch pizzas. the ones that are under the heat lamp are freshly made and ready to go, but if what you want is not available, be prepared to wait - and it can be a long wait since the lunch crowd can get large. read more

This place is great to get a quick, tasty lunch and conveniently located in City Center. Their combo deal for a personal pizza and drink for 5.99 is a great deal, and they always have a great selection of toppings. My favorite is cheese, pineapple and canadian bacon. Also, their VIP card is also a great deal, as you only need 5 purchases before you get a free pizza! read more

Always welcoming when you come through the door. The price is modest considering the surrounding area. Only problem I have is they usually don't have what I want when I come in the door (Spinach Pesto). I usually have to wait 15 minutes for a pizza that should be ready at all times. Maybe it isn't that popular but that isn't my problem (the customer). In any case, they are very polite which is why they continue to get my return business. read more

I don't eat pizza that often so I usually go by the stars and the site I looked at gave Pizza man, Oakland five stars. I don't know who could have given tham such a stellar review but Hopefully my review helps even the field. On Friday evening (9/14/12) I ordered a custom pizza with a beverage that cost me $27. The too thin dough was soggy and the topping was way too salty. Even though I ordered fresh spinach they must have thought that I really didn't like vegetables because I barely found a leaf of spinach anywhere. I think that they used tomato sauce but I'm not sure. When I tried to serve myself , half of the topping slid off the crust. Somebody needs to take a remedial course in pizza making. I usually look forward to a little left over pizza the next day but this one went straight into the garbage. And the customer service was less than impressive. read more

When I used to work in Oakland this was one of the main places our team use to eat for a quick bite. Plus not many places are open at 10PM at night.
