Tonkatsu Curry
Deb C.

OMG such delicious food. No bathroom though. 1 of 2 places tonight with no bathroom and honestly, if you're providing the input, you gotta have a place for the output.

Delicious curry as usual. Reminds me of the ones I have in Japan. This was the tonkatsu curry and the breading remained crispy despite being drowned in rich curry sauce

Decent curry spot. You order at the till, pay and find a spot to sit. Curry is very comforting and delicious. I got the tonkatsu and it crispy but on the drier side. Filling meal for under $20.

we tried their curry during their 5th anniversary promotion we like how we could choose the level if spiciness of the curry We tried the goku uma beef curry on promotion as well as the stamina don (sliced pork). we really like the curry and the sauce was authentic and tasty. However the stamina don has a lot of ground pepper which was a bit overpowering but overall, it is a curry hidden gem. I will go back to try the chicken katsu curry

Ebi curry

Mr Japanese Curry is a nice little gem tucked away on West 8th Street. The restaurant is small, but I didn't find obtaining seats an issue. The restaurant offers quickly prepared Japanese style curry dishes at affordable prices with fresh ingredients. I ordered the Ebi curry and enjoyed it. I'd love to come back when I'm in the area again.

I was randomly doing chores around cambie street when I stumbled into this place. The smell of curry (which reminds me of places like CoCo Ichibanya in Japan) tempted me to order the tonkatsu ($15.5) plus omu cheese ($5.5) at level 4 spicy ($0.3). I was slightly taken aback when the foods come out since portion is way bigger than expected (enough for 2 meals for me). First off, the curry was really good and had that little bit of sweetness and spiced profile that's common in Japanese curry. The melted cheese and egg also add a nice creaminess to the dish, while tonkatsu was fine but didn't really stand out. If I have some feedback it would have to do with the rice being somewhat dry and the spiciness level still being very low despite ordering the spiciest level. All in all, a good comfort food meal. Will come back when I crave Japanese curry.

Limited comfortable table seating available. Quick service. Pay/order at till.

Many curry options (beef/chicken/veg/tonkatsu) and spicy level options . Not many seats so consider takeout . Fast service. Had Tonkatsu curry: Katsu was a good portion a bit dry. Curry sauce ok a bit mustard-y for me. Rice ok and decent amount of rice.

Pork katsu curry and side order of chicken karaage

So happy to find this delightful little place for Japanese curry! Found it by accident and out of curiosity on one of those cold and damp Vancouver days. This place really hit the spot! We were greeted and she explained of how to order. We can pick from the available menu and we can have add-ons as well like ebi, croquette, chicken karaage. I asked for recommendation and she told me that her favourite were the beef curry and the pork katsu. We went ahead with the recommendation and added chicken karaage. The beef curry was very good and has a balanced flavour and has a bit of sweetness, which is what I preferred. My lovely date, Mr Hubby, thought the pork katsu was cooked perfectly and the curry went very well with it, there's a bit of tang that cuts richness of the pork. If there's one thing though, I would preferred the beef to be a bit more tender though it's fine as it is. The karaage was not bad, I'd prefer a bit stronger seasoning, I found the karaage was very mild in flavour. The rice that go with the plate was a lot for me, I would order with less rice next time. Parking may be a hassle as that area has been quite busy lately specially being the holiday season. I would probably would have it to go next time as the space was quite small.

Vegetable Curry

I had a very nice experience at this little Japanese curry shop! They have lots of options (multiple vegan options) and the curries are highly customizable so you can really build your ideal meal. I particularly like that you can adjust the amount of rice and that you can change the sauce, so it would theoretically be possible to get a seafood curry with the vegan base instead of the default chicken bass so you could have a true pescatarian curry. I went with the vegetable curry and enjoyed it a lot! The gravy was richly flavoured but smooth, and I liked the assortment of vegetables. I'm not a frequent consumer of Japanese curry but this was probably the best one I've tried - something about the sauce was very memorable. I also tried their matcha tiramisu which was also pretty good, which you might not expect from a little curry restaurant! It seems like they used a good matcha - the flavour was strong but not bitter. This was all quite reasonably priced - the total was about $18 including tax. Along with the good food, the staff was very hospitable. They provided me with a glass of water and were very eager to help me feel comfortable. Although it looks like mostly a takeout place, the dine-in experience is pleasant since the staff is so nice and you can get your food on an actual plate instead of a takeout container. Very much recommend for some good Japanese curry!

Stamina Curry with extra order of katsu

Tiny takeout spot that has a few seats indoors serving so far the best Japanese curry from a restaurant I've had in a while. If you have travelled in Japan, or make your own Japanese curry from scratch (not from the cubes of roux), this will likely not compare, but relative to other versions I've tried so far, this is pretty good! The portions are generous. I opted for less rice (you get a $1 discount) and even then, it was a lot. The extra side of Katsu was good, but would have benefited from some seasoning prior to dredging and frying. I didn't see it, but I wish they'd offer the option of adding some shredded cabbage "salad" and also the fukujinzuke pickles (special pickles typically eaten with Japanese curry). I understand that it's an extra expense to add for free, especially if most people don't know it, but for me, it would have been something I would gladly paid extra to have. Overall, a very filling, well priced fast lunch or dinner.

Been eyeing this newish place for a while as it is nice to have another Japanese curry option. Tonight, I was looking at the board sign on the sidewalk and trying to figure out the menu. A friendly staff came out to welcome me and helped answer questions and explain the many combos and add-ons. Something I thought was so simple was actually overwhelming which is a good thing. There are 3 types of curry sauces: beef, chicken and vegan. With the help of the staff. I selected the beef curry with slice pork (Stamina Curry). I was informed the beef curry was richer and more pungent. The curry sauces uses over 17 different spices and you can certainly taste the spices. Comparing to other Japanese curries, Mr Japanese Curry was the spiciest. Surprised but still enjoyed my meal. Loved the fried onions as it added a nice texture. The rice was perfectly cooked and soaked up the sauce nicely. For $12.95, it was a good price for a quick take-out dinner. Would like to try the Tonkatsu or Chicken Katsu curry for next time.

Beef curry on rice
Evan K.

We were pleased to come across the delicious aromas wafting from this curry shop on a rainy Friday evening around supper time. Location is opposite the Winners on West 8th near Cambie. We were welcomed in by a friendly staff member who politely asked if we needed help picking a curry and then gave us excellent advice in our selection. We chose the beef curry medium spiced which comes with a good portion of rice. In addition we got a pumpkin croquette. The curry was thick and rich with tender beef, we both really liked it and would order the same again. If you're used to Fujiya curry, you'll love the taste of this and the variety of other curries available including vegan and vegetarian. It's not as large a portion but the quality is good and it's a different experience being a restaurant. Really hope this new business survives - it's a tasty option on a cold night.

Gloria F.

I am so excited to try a new Japanese curry joint! I stopped by during their soft opening and they only have take out options (they open for Dine in on June 12th) I got the curry rice with chicken karaage and added 1 pumpkin croquette The flavors for the chicken was pretty good, it was well marinated and seasoned Since this was a take out order, I would recommend that they use a container that could separate the curry from the fried foods and rice so that the fried items don't get all soggy after our car ride home I am excited to come back to dine in!

Steep as it is, I decided I wanted a "quick little sushi lunch with a view", and a quick little sushi lunch with a few is exactly what I received. Although I don't recommend it, I walked right in from the street, no reservation, and was seated at the bar (in pretty casual street clothes I may add). I enjoyed a premium sake flight (which was fine...just fine), an old fashioned served with the perfect accompanying dark chocolate, and a good amount of sushi including their signature aburi style sushi in flight form and nigiri tuna flight (bluefin, chutoro, otoro). After visiting Japan last December, I'm a bit of an otoro snob but I have to hand it to them, all three of these cuts were perfect. The accompanying rice, perfection. The quality of the fish, divine. The view was the cherry on top of this experience. This will certainly be a spot I revisit next time I'm in Vancouver.

Michelin starred quality in their service by how they explained the menu, brought out the food, came back around to refill waters. Just top notch service and elegantly so. The food was good but not of value. Their lunch set was a good introductory to what they offer. I enjoyed the food for its flavours and presentation but I thought that it was a bit overpriced. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful, fresh and definitely elevated, but it was $50 for 10pcs of sushi, 2 appetizer sized samples of their appetizer or entree dishes, and miso soup (which we did not get and didn't realize till much later in the day). If you're wanting an upscale experience (and portion) of good quality food or wanting to impress other parties, then this is a nice spot. For regular eats, it's a bit too luxurious to be a casual thing in my opinion. The ambiance is nice and calm. They have a patio, which has a meh view overlooking the harbor, but beware of a breezy day. It will catch a bit of a wind tunnel. They have heaters and blankets but the heaters don't really reach unless you're sitting next to it.

Maybe it's an American thing to linger and enjoy a dining experience. To stay longer than needed to…read moresoak up the ambiance and give a good moment some extra time for memories. But in other parts of the world the meal is what's important and so is a quick turn around. Guu with Garlic reminded me a lot of the Izakaya restaurants I found under the train lines of Tokyo in many ways, including the amount of time it felt right to stay. The food came out quick, the servers took orders quicker, and the alcohol came out chilled and as nice contrast to the hot food. Looking around and you see the hand written menu on blackboard surfaces on the walls and this feeling of authenticity. The heat of the flames from the kitchen can be felt and seen if you sit at the bar. And the flavors just hit all the right notes. Starting with appetizers, a section izakayas shine at, the first dish we got was their scallop and mayo pizza. With a crispy crunch on the bottom and crust, this reminds you of the flavors of a baked volcano roll or scallop roll you can find in almost any North American sushi restaurant. Just like that dish, it's important to eat it while it's still hot so it doesn't get gross and 느끼 에. Then came the yellowtail tuna "tempura" pieces. Thick pieces of yellowtail tuna flash fried for just the right crisp on the outside with slight pink of the fish inside. It is meaty without being oily or fatty. Great bite. The beef tongue after was interesting. From the color of the sauce it accompanies it you would think it would be heavy in flavor but it is actually light and citrusy. A good cut into the richer tones of the beef tongue. The yaki udon was one of the best I ever had. It was smokey without being overpowering. The beef was thin and tender and balanced well with the mushrooms it also came with. The udon noodles stayed bouncy and chewy which I didn't expect from being grilled. Very tasty and highly recommend this dish. For our final bite we shared a hot stone bowl of their pork and cabbage rice. With the hot stone bowl constantly cooking even after this dish arrived it was imperative to stir the ingredients together constantly for the first two minutes. It allowed for the runny egg to meld with the rice and the crispy texture of some ingredients was a nice bonus. All in all, I loved eating here and if my appetite was bigger I would've tried more on their menu. A solid place to eat with a great atmosphere, if you're looking for delicious food that won't take too much of your time but still lingers in your memories you have to check out Guu with Garlic.

Saku's katsu was so good that when I think about the katsus I've had is the past at other places I realize now they were just decent katsu. Other highlights here are their house made sesame dressing - so good. They sliced the cabbage salad so thin that in combination with the sesame dressing it was a great combo. But since they serve it in a broth, it does get soggy really quick. Still good, but after a few minutes its just soggy. The broth is nice with rice; comforting kind of meal. The unlimited rice/soup/cabbage is just icing on the cake. My dining partner had the Kake udon (pretty good, noodles good texture and slightly smaller strands than most places) and Menchi Cheese side - basically a pork meatball with cheese and deep fried katsu-style, served with katsu sauce. This was excellent. My original review still stands. Excellent katsu, plus they have the consistency and reliability. $28-30/meal and its plenty of food for 1, especially with unlimited cabbage/rice/soup. Restaurant is nice and comfortable, good spacing and not cramped. Easy recommend. 5/5.

At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Me, I know nothing about Izakaya or what is or isn't authentic Japanese cuisine, so this review is coming from someone with zero knowledge or expectation of any specific foods or experiences. Despite it being a weeknight, the place was packed. It was good that we had a reservation. There was a couple in line before me and they were walk-ins, and there were no available seats for them. I noted how small this place was, and crowded, with the tables close together and a long bar with a counter and barstools there (also close together). Our reserved table was right by the front door - literally, - so every time the door opened, we got a gust of cold air (and it was a cold February night when we were there). I kept my coat on. Truth be known, I was not very comfortable. Also, it was loud. Very loud. I like how the staff shout Japanese greetings to diners whenever they enter but between the frequent shouts and the sheer volume of chatter from all the diners, all sitting close together in close proximity, it was kinda hard to hear what my friends were saying during our dinner. That said, the environment was super vibrant and, again, my friends said this was very typical of an Izakaya in Japan. Food-wise, I have no idea what my friends ordered. The menu was primarily available by way of a QR code and I had no idea what the dishes were, so I deferred to my friends' knowledge. But I can attest that all the dishes were DELICIOUS. We had some sort of Japanese street food "pancakes" (they were wonderful). We had some sort of stirfry beef with noodles (amazing). We had two types of sashimi (omg both were so fresh and so so good!). We had a few other dishes that I can't recall, but I remember I loved them. So.... the food here was GREAT. Service was also attentive which I hadn't expected, being as busy as the restaurant was. I really liked this place but I'll probably go back in the summertime when the weather is nicer as I was cold there, and I'd dine at an off-time, when the volume wasn't so loud. (I'm too old for the loudness!).
