Goodbar proves that it is possible to be a dive bar while having clean bathrooms, friendly staff and a killer beer selection. Great patio, spacious bar, pool tables, dart boards and a stage for live music and other events. All that is great but what makes Goodbar one of my favorite bars is their amazing tap beer selection - huge and varied, featuring many craft brews including local breweries. The prices are spot on - the same beer that costs $8 at a "nicer" bar down the street will cost you half that at Goodbar. My bill for two craft beers (including the pricey Ommegang) came to $8.50. My friend drank 4 craft beers for under $20. Not sure what type of beer you want? The bartenders are friendly and willing to let you sample the beer. Of interest: they have a beer club. You pay a certain amount and once a month you come in for a tasting event usually with free food pairings. I hope this bar always remains a dive bar - it's one of its charms. read more

When I think of Mister Goodbar, I always think of a time about 3 years ago when I wandered in around dinner time. The place was pretty dead and there was not yet a bouncer at the door. I proceeded to the bar and asked for an order of chicken fingers. The bar tender gave me his best tough guy look and sternly asked for my ID. I guess I looked kind of young to be in a bar ordering chicken fingers by myself. I suppose this was a compliment. But yeah, what everyone else said - this is a dive bar BUT with a very good beer selection. Years ago, Goodbar is where I began to explore beers beyond the standard bottles. Their bar food is your typical fryer food although always good as far as fryer food goes. The bartenders are usually pretty cool. There is a fair amount of space for accommodating groups and when the weather is nice, there is a patio. Pool tables and dart boards are also available. So it's an all around good choice for just casually hanging out. However, it can get pretty loud when it's busy and there can be some rowdier crowds. It's hit or miss in that regard. I've been to this place a couple times, which is saying a lot since I Iive in Georgia. At any rate, these wings are SOOO GOOD. And I am not a wing person, so, once again: saying a lot. I've had the Chili Lime and Sweet Chili, as well as the Teriyaki. The Sweet Chili was my favorite, but the Chili Lime was also very good. According to my friend (the one who lives in Buffalo and frequents this bar at any hour), the taste of the wings depends on who is cooking that night. And that night, we had a good cook, so the wings proved to blow up my expectations of wings. The atmosphere of the place is super divey. Smokey, dark, usually pretty busy. Now I don't normally go to Goodbar as Cole's is right next door and that is usually where I head to if I am in Forest Elmwood area. But Cole's was actually closed when I went to go there last week, so I headed into Goodbar. Probably only my second maybe third time ever going in the place but after looking around I asked myself why is that. The place is actually not to shabby. I mean it's a dive bar, but I actually enjoy a good dive bar. They have good beers on tap, and are a bit cheaper than Cole's next door. And way more open space. They have bar games like pool and darts. Some live music on some night's and room f or dancing. Little patio area outside. Basically everything you want from a bar. Next time I am in the area you might see me save a couple bucks by going here instead of Cole's. read more

The bartenders aren't bad and the specials are great. There is nothing that wows me completely about this bar, but it's a fun place to go and I've never had a bad experience there. It seems to have all the necessities of an ok bar - juke box, pool table, darts... There is even a little stage that on really busy nights people dance on even though it's not really "that" kind of bar. A pretty good default place to go if there is nothing more exciting going on. I always like to go up there and meet up with people, because it's not super loud during the earlier/later parts of the night and if you show up early enough you're too drunk to mind yelling by 1 anyway. :) Oh, also, ladies, there are quite a lot of different kinds of guys who will try to pick you up at this bar. Personally, I find the crowd more preferable to most places.. they are less inpersonal then Chippewa and a little more subtle then Allentown.. Goodbar will forever and always be my go-to happy hour place. They have tons of beers on tap and the bartenders are always super nice. They have another room with pool tables and darts besides the bar area. Most weekends they have live music either on the 1st floor or the 2nd. Fridays they put out free apps around 5:30. Usually chicken wings, poppers and a meat platter. My office frequents here for happy hours and comfortably fits all 30 of us plus the people that stop by. One of the divest bars I've ever been to and certainly one of the best! We were in town to sample Buffalo's bestest treats: beer and wings, and Mister Goodbar has both of them. I can't remember how different beers you can get on drafts but they've got plenty. All of them are top quality stuff. Our wings weren't previously frozen and not overdone. With a choice of two sauces (Chilli-Lime and BBQ) we ate small pounds of good winged goodness. The jukebox played amazing tunes, some of which I haven't heard for some time. The overall atmosphere was golden: a truly down-to-earth, relaxed spot that invites people of all ages to hang out at. Mister Goodbar can't do no wrong in my books. read more

I have been to Goodbar a number of times and have always had fun. From listening to music inside, chatting over drinks at the bar, to throwing up across the street while competing in an athletic event involving drinking and running, my memories of Goodbar are all fun. They have a very extensive collection of different beers- most I've seen almost anywhere. They also have pretty cheap deals on the less pretentious stuff. I have always liked the decor and colorful clientele in here. Service is also usually very friendly. I've heard there's an upstairs but have never ventured up there. A solid, clean dive-bar. The best on the Elmwood strip, and it's location near Delaware park is convenient. There's plentiful parking nearby, and Goodbar's beer selection, while not excellent, is surprisingly diverse and features some real gems. Distinguishing characteristic: the energetic, charismatic, spontaneous rock and roll bands they book here on weekends. There is a cover, but it's well worth it. Darts, billiards and a nice, underrated patio. Somewhat cold and unfriendly staff, in my experience. Nothing terribly rude, but they just don't seem to care and certainly chase tips. It's a straight up DIVE BAR. If you don't like those hole-in-the-wall places, this place probably isn't for you. Nay, this place DEFINITELY isn't for you. Super relaxed, college atmosphere, cheap drinks and pretty decent food. They have a good beer selection. Normally that'd be a 3-star in my books but the bartenders are too damn cool so this gets a 4 star. I love Goodbar! They have a fantastic craft beer selection. Yesterday they were having a CBW party with 6 CBW beers on tap. The bartenders are nice, and I really like that they have a little punch card of buy 10 pints, get 1 free! They have pretty standard fried food selections, but if you go on Fridays around 6, it's all free. Other than that, you really don't go for the food. The bar itself is big. They have 1 pool table for any billiards fans, but it has a lot of space for groups to hang out. The upstairs is pretty nice... I've been there for a comedy show before and really enjoyed it. I've heard about the free food, wasn't there when they served it so can't comment. I went for drinks with a colleague and the service sucked. We went at around 7 to sit out on the patio. You have to go in to get drinks. for the first round, rather than get served, we stood there watching the bartender go all through the bar lighting candles. We were eventually served. I actually met my husband here back in the eighties, we recently went back for our anniversary and not much has changed. We went there on a Friday night and they had a very good band playing they were called "twin city queens" or something like that. We had a great time. I've been going to Mister Goodbar since I moved up to Buffalo and it has become my favorite bar hands down. Whether it's going out with my friends on a Friday/Saturday night or going to get wings randomly during the week, from the bouncers to the bartenders, the staff is always friendly and awesome. Mister Goodbar has always been the standard for all other dive bars to live up to. They have an above average beer list, pool, darts and the area is generally clean. I've been coming to this favorite for over eight years and I can honestly say that the beer list and atmosphere have consistently been getting better over time. I've been coming to Mister Goodbar for years and I must say it is the best bar on Elmwood. From the dozens of beers on tap (36+), to it's specialty bottle selection (20+), it's second to none. It's bar food menu is also quite a surprise. Their wing and chicken finger selection is has some of the most unique flavors in Buffalo, I recommend their Italian and Canjun Stout. They also have probably 12 flat screen TV's with sports playing at all times (MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA, Soccer, etc. packages there so you never miss a game). There really isn't a downside to this place. Yeah, Goodbar is good. I've been an occasional patron over the past 15 years...yep, now I feel old...but have been a regular the past couple years, since I moved into the neighborhood. The staff and bartenders are always friendly (tipping goes a long way folks), and the people that frequent this establishment can vary from all ages and backgrounds. Which is a good thing, because it has something for everyone and a unique charm all it's own. Cool looking old wood carved bar, pool tables, dart boards, front patio, great music, cheap but good beer, and urinal trough in the men's bathroom round out the divey bar scenery. The best night to go is Fridays; they have $1 off all micro and import pints all day and night. And they have pretty good live bands that play upstairs, sometimes downstairs. Also, happy hour is great for free wings! Sabres/Bills games are fun as well....as long as we're winning! read more

Big fan of Mister Goodbar. We go almost every Friday for happy hour because we work down the street. The reason I like it is because it's very open, plenty of room, and usually a good menu. Plus they put out a free spread of food around 6...unfortunately that's when it gets packed because all the freeloaders come in..buy a pitcher of beer for 6 people and then eat all the food. -We have ordered the food before and the wings aren't bad. They just remodeled a lot of the furniture which is really good. -I love this place, it's a great patio for the summer, good live music all the time and just a fun place to hang out. -My only complaints are #1 I think it needs a little work. The bathrooms especially since I only like seeing a trough at a Bills game and by midnight the toilets are covered in all types of stuff, I think if they tore down the back wall facing the patio and made it into a garage door to keep closed in winter it would be a hit, and no pool table in the middle of the bar since it's nearly impossible to move around those people when it's crowded. Also, I personally don't notice, but over 20 people have complained to me they don't like going there because it smells...not sure if it's the bar or the floors or what, but if it could be fixed I know more people wouldn't mind going. I think with just a few touch ups, it would be great. My other complaint is when college is in session, you can't turn around in there after midnight..now that's not Goodbars fault I'm happy they're doing such good business but I'm past my college years so unfortunately I skip those nights. -All in all a great local beer place, great bartenders who are nice as can be and just a really great spot to hang out on the Elmwood strip (before midnight haha). read more

Mister Goodbar is a Buffalo classic--at least when it comes to college bars. Located about a block south of the Buffalo State College Campus and at the north end of the Elmwood strip, it's been the first (and last) stop for at least a couple decades of twenty-something partygoers. That's not to say you'll feel out of place if your college days are a bit distant in the rearview mirror; there are always a few neighborhood folks there, particularly in the summer when the front patio is a great place to sip and beer and people-watch. Make no mistake, Goodbar is a total dive, but it has one of the best beer selections in Buffalo. Their wings are spot-on, never-frozen, and cooked to crispy perfection with many options for sauces. Goodbar is an alright bar, not a real dive bar where everyone knows your name but a place with a large and diverse beer and cider selection where management thinks dive-y means the floors, tables, and bar aren't regularly clean. The crowd Thursday through Saturday nights are often very young (sometimes underaged) from nearby colleges; whether that's good or bad or in between depends on what atmosphere you feel comfortable with. read more

The beer selection doesn't make up for the rude service by their bouncers or the bar owner Bobby. There are plenty of bar in the era with a lot better beer lines and a lot better atmosphere.
