Went there for my first time yesterday-exploring new places for Seafood. I paid a lot of $ for the mixed fried shrimp and oyster platter,it was about $17, and I added a $4 catfish filet-chose fries and hush puppies for sides. Immediately I could tell the shrimp were prepackaged frozen-no taste what so ever-the tiny oysters had a very bad odor-the tiny 4 hush puppies were good-frozen crinkle cut fries with no flavor-the best was the catfish-I could tell it had a homemade seasoned crust and tastes fresh-I doubt if I will ever go back-if only for the catfish-I'll stay with Captain Bennys or Catfish Parlor! read more

I don't know what happened, we really wanted to like it because there are so many good reviews. We got the platter with the catfish, oysters, shrimp, and chicken. We bought okra, boudin, hush puppies, corn bread, collard greens, and red beans and rice for everyone to try. All the sides were good for the most part, but they didn't season our seafood or meat AT ALL. It was just fried. kind of disappointing. We just had to cover it in hot sauce. One of our orders was the 3+3 Dinner ... three shrimp and three chicken tenders. When our order finally arrived we got fish instead of chicken. We went to the counter to let them know. The lady was like, can I see your receipt while the gentleman who took our order never left his phone although he was talking to IT about the ONLY register that was working, because ... it wasn't working. He knew what we ordered and gave a look to his staff as if 'oh y'all messed up'. My husband said - uhm, ok do you want the fish back. Imagine my excitement when I see a sign on this business saying that they have a salad bar at lunch time! For those of you who don't work in this area, let me tell you there isn't many healthy choices within a couple minute proximity! It's either fast food, fast food or oh you guessed it fast food! This looks promising I thought to myself and at that moment my eyes make contact with an empty and not in use salad bar. My hopes and dreams of a healthy lunch went up in flames. I tried to make the best of it and ordered overpriced chicken fingers with red beans and rice and coleslaw. It also came with a roll but, I am not much of a roll person. You get your receipt then your cup to fill at the soda machine. Then you go over and show your ticket to the woman behind the counter. There were all these sides and people were ordering from her too and it was all confusing. If I had known they had all those side options I would have opted to just make a meal out of sides! From there I went and sat down at the table to wait for my order. hmmm 20 minutes later I go up to inquire and the woman was a little snotty and was like they are cooking. I felt like saying I'm sorry did you slaughter the chicken out back and bread them yourself because I think not. I am pretty sure they forgot about me and after 30 minutes I had my to go lunch! The chicken was ok, just ok. Also, make sure you ask for some type of dipping sauce because they will only give you ketchup. I'm not really sure how many people dip chicken in ketchup but, I had to because my tenders were so dry. I am not even going to begin to dissect all the problems with the coleslaw. My first time here was very excited I like fish and soul food sides. But this was not the place for me and my mate it's was a line ok fine. There was only one lady who was working in front she was taking orders and bartending making drinks and only one cook in the back. Very good fried fish. Probably the top 3 restaurant prepared catfish I've ever had. Batter was crispy and inside was hot, moist and flaky. Fried okra was fresh and perfectly fried. Mr Catfish would have received 5 stars had it not been for the extremely cold serving of fries. Not a terrible faux pas, just not great. But the star of the show was the fish. It took forever (30 minutes to be exact) to get someone to answer the phone to order to go. Once I got there checking out was quick because there wasn't many people there. I ordered the 3 catfish and 3 shrimp. I ordered the gumbo and red beans and rice for the two sides. To my surprise I received four pieces of fish and three plumply breaded shrimp. They were seasoned very well. I am a gumbo snob because of growing up near Louisiana and the gumbo to my surprise had a good tasting brown roux and lots of shrimp, sausage, and chicken. They were redeeming themselves until I got to the red beans and rice which was bland. Next time I will be ordering double gumbo or collard greens. Catfish was fresh and crispy, chicken wing the size of a chicken breast ( however it was a bit over salted , hence the 4 stars instead of 5. ). Chicken fried chicken with a peppered cream gravy ! Meatloaf like your momma used to make! Yum! Not to mention every vegetable was seasoned to perfection!!!! My mouth just watered again thinking about them! Honestly, when it comes to Mr. Catfish, the key to enjoying your food is to not allow yourself to be overwhelmed by preconceived notions. Mr. Catfish is located in an older-looking strip mall in East Austin. When you first walk in, the decor is just what you'd expect; eccentric and a bit lack luster. That's all fine and well, they promise good food, not the best atmosphere. If you grew up in the hood, it'll remind you of your favorite uncle's backyard cook outs - everything is good because you know what you came for. Ordering from the menu is always a breeze for me, primarily because I always order the same thing, the "Wing Ding" meals. Yes, yes, I know; coming to a fish place for their chicken wings is a bit silly but it's worth it. If you're craving good wings, this is it. No, they probably won't be the best you've ever had but they'll kinda remind you of Granny's & the nostalgia itself is good enough to keep me coming back. As much as I love the place, I must agree with some other reviews; the catfish, while to my liking, is not the best catfish you'll find in Austin by far. The fries could do with a little more seasoning (or, heck, even just some salt) and it'd be nice to see sauce that is actually sauce. Not to mention the price. That's what knocked my review down a star. While the food is good, it's a once-in-a-while treat for me because I just can't justify paying so much for twelve pieces of chicken and a handful of fries (no roll or small drink included). All in all, I'll continue to go back and would even take friends on occasion. Every now and again I even drive out of my way to go have lunch there. I am writing this review with total disappointment. It is not about the food, but the extreme lack of customer service. Granted the food is cooked to order, however, there has to be and always be the time of your customer contemplated in the service industry. This restaurant fails miserably. I waited for 40 minutes for two catfish filet dinners. Even when I asked about the estimated time I was told that is was coming up. Then after requesting a complete refund, I was told they are making it now. Really after 40 minutes you are just now getting to the order. Dare I mention that I waited in line for 20 minutes. There were no attempts to reconcile the extreme wait time. Only a half hearted apology. I have eaten from this place in the recent past. In spite of the fact that my first experience 4 years prior was less than stellar. Needless to say I will not make any more attempts to support this business. A business that has this kind of service will not get any support or money that I or any of those that I know have to spend. We went during dinner hours, so I can not comment on the buffet or brunch that some people seem to have a problem with. Not the best I've ever had, but I've had some good catfish around the country. It's definitely tops in the area. I saw another reviewer comment about the tartar sauce being in packets. I didn't think anything of it, but my friend did cite it without knowing of the review I had read. So I guess it's a thing. The fried shrimp was really good. The seasoned fries were excellent. And the rice and beans were very good. The surprise of the meal were the corn muffins which we added to our meal as an after thought. They were probably the best corn muffins I've ever had. They were a little delayed since they were being made fresh, but they were worth the wait. If I have any suggestions for Mr. Catfish after looking at other reviews, and their menu, I would say don't try to be all things to all people. If the dining room were half its size, and they only focused on the catfish and related items, all the reviews would be 5 star.
