When I entered the store it was empty. I guess it's a small family runned store. It's bright and clean. I was greeted immediately which was nice. I picked the Boston cream pie. It looked so fluffy and fresh. I also ordered the Japanese cheesecake. The Boston cream pie was so good. The cake was so light and fluffy, the cream was so light and satisfying. Barley Time is a Flushing bakery and café that focuses on a mix of pastries, bread items, and tea…read morebased drinks, set up more like a quick stop bakery where I pick from display cases rather than a sit down space. I walked into a straightforward layout with shelves of baked goods and a drink counter that stayed busy throughout the day. The croissant style pastries and the egg tart were some of the more commonly ordered items. I tried the croissant egg tart, which stood out as a flaky option that leaned more crisp than soft. Pork floss bread and savory buns are part of the heavier side of the menu, while items like matcha mochi bread and cream based buns lean sweeter and softer in texture. Drinks like rose latte and other milk teas are also available, keeping it closer to a hybrid bakery café setup. I noticed some items felt lighter and fresh out of the case, while others varied more in texture depending on timing. Service at this location was inconsistent. My visit was quick and straightforward, but I have heard from others that some visits involve longer waits or issues with order handling, especially during busy periods. The space itself is functional rather than designed for sitting and lingering, and the focus is more on turnover and takeout orders than extended dining. Pricing sits in line with other Flushing bakeries in the area, with a wide enough selection that people tend to come for specific items rather than a full menu experience. Overall, Barley Time is a convenient Flushing stop if I am looking for a mix of pastries and drinks in one place, especially if I am picking up quick baked items like egg tarts, croissant based pastries, or sweet breads to go.

There seems to be a bakery or two per block all selling sweets and savory baked goods. After visiting a friend, I needed a little something to finish off the evening. It was just what I needed to fill the hole in my belly. The bread was nice and flakey, and chicken tasty. I might try another place tomorrow!

Unfortunately, this place is now closed on more days than when they first opened here. Be aware that most of these pictures for this store are no longer relevant. It is now a different store with less variety. We came early in the morning to get the best varied selection. Unfortunately it wasn't much. There are bigger selections of goodies at other nearby bakeries. Many years back, I was a regular customer at their original location in Bayside. Loved their cute matcha cookies with pink bear cookies and the selection of tiramisu. Unfortunately these have disappeared from the menu. Thought I'd give other pastries a try. Unfortunately didn't really like anything enough to go back again. There are so many other places that are more interesting, tastier and less expensive. Hope they read this and create some new exciting and interesting desserts, to compete with all the other bakeries close by. Egg tart. Original flavor ($4) is too sweet. Matcha flavor ($4.50) is heavy and dense. More like a thick pudding. Crust is too hard, more like a cookie. I'm more used to it being flaky. Filling is sunken in. Is that normal? It does mean you get less filling for your money. On the small side overall. These are not like the ones from the original location, years ago. Dacquoise. What Is a Dacquoise? Dacquoise is a French cake, consisting of layers of buttercream or whipped cream usually paired with fruit. This place has a few flavors of these. They were ok for me. Texture is a bit like a macaroon. Size is teeny tiny. Some can eat it in one bite. I needed 2. Lots of different flavors of scones and cookie type items. Not my thing. This place does seem to use better quality ingredients. So that's a plus if that's what you are looking for. Your desserts come in a cute insulated bag. Come and get them while they last. No seating! Street parking only. Took a bit of searching to find some. Service. Okay. Ambiance. Basic. I was pretty happy to hear that this place opened up again. Hopefully they bring in new creations that stand out from the crowd and I'll run back over again.

Easy to miss it if you don't know the store name since Golden Sponge doesn't indicate they're selling mochi unless you're actually there yourself or you see a picture from someone's review. Besides the giant mochi, they also sell very affordable sponge cakes ranging from $1 to $1.50. The giant mochi is getting viral for being the size of a huge blob and the different fillings you can have being stuffed inside (wrapped with the mochi) depending on various prices. My friends and I got the giant mochi with four fillings. Total turns out to be $14. We have chosen mango pomelo + cookie & cream + strawberry + lychee rose. We're amazed by the vibrant colors side by side next to each other. It is a very cool process to watch the staff make it in person. Would be best to eat the mochi freshly made. Don't try to eat it by yourself though because it's way too fulfilling imo. Best to split the whole thing between 3-5 people. The ratio of cream cheese to the fruit pieces is mainly 8:2 which I didn't expect it. To be honest, I am expecting more fruit and not only few pieces as garnish. Realistically, you're eating 80% cream cheese and 20% of the thin mochi consistency. If you're lactose intolerant, it might not stomach too well in your digestive system. The staff has mixed in everything together. However, I can't tell what I am exactly eating or if I can actually differentiate between the 4 filling flavors. Its presentation of the pastel cotton candy colors is top notch nonetheless. Picture worthy for IG/TikTok, although taste wise falls short from here for me. Overall, there's way too much cream cheese inside. Also, the mochi texture gets lost within the rich filling. The first two bites are fine. But as you keep digging in, you get the feeling of being overwhelmed by a sugar overload. Therefore, you will feel very full after just a few bites. Another thing is that, they should've provided chopsticks or forks rather than plastic spoons. Not gonna lie, but it's pretty hard to actually scoop the mochi up. Like I'm saying, I don't recommend this dessert for those who can't tolerate anything dairy. The giant mochi is officially a "once-and-done" dessert for me. Might be great for filming a viral video, but save that money for something else more worthwhile instead.
