I loved that we all got individual vinegar ginger dips - Crab + Pork Soup Dumplings: 9/10 - better than the Pork! The skin wasn't as thick for our batch - Scallop Soup Dumplings: 7/10 - not a huge fan of the flavor, but I like that they don't skimp on the scallop! - Shanghai Lo Mein & Shanghai Style Rice Cake: 7/10 - they could've had more wok fry, but good flavor - Fried Wonton in Peanut + Hot Sauce: 8/10 - I really enjoyed this dish! It's not very spicy + topped with a crushed peanut/sugar flavor - so good! - Braised Pork Belly: 8/10 - pretty heavy, unless you eat it with the bao buns. Very flavorful, and may go good with a bowl of rice as well! - Scallion Pancake & String Beans: 9/10 - standard + yummy! Overall, it was a good place for a meal, but I personally had better soup dumplings elsewhere. Otherwise, everything else is alright!

We finally agreed on Crab & Pork Soup Dumplings, Kau Fu, Dry Sautéed Green Beans with Meat, Salt & Pepper Squid, and Shanghainese Style Rice Cakes. The Kau Fu arrived first, and was truly exceptional, with large, firm, and juicy chunks of seitan, and a good sprinkling of large, not rubbery tree ears. My friend who said she didn't like seitan tried it, and liked it a lot. Kai Fu has a slight licorish flavor, and is a little sweet. We finished every bite. Moving on to the soup dumplings, the broth was delicate and the skins were thin and tender, altogether the best I've had in a long time. The green beans were perfect, seared and crispy, as they should be, with ground pork and a little pickled veg. The rice cakes were appropriately chewy, and we enjoyed the baby bok choy, mushrooms, and shrimp in the mild sauce. The squid was the only dish that wasn't perfect, being a little bland and a tiny bit too chewy for the size of the pieces. The service was attentive without being too much. We were offered hot tea, and a second carafe of water, without having to ask. I think I am safely going to jump the gun and give this place 5 stars. I've tried so little, but I want to come back and try much more! I sampled a couple things and already got full, but I could smell everything around me and it's smelled great. Glancing at other tables I could see how appetizing everything looked, matching the aroma throughout the restaurant. The popular XLB, soup dumplings with pork were a good change of pace to the familiar dumpling. The beef curry dumplings were delicious as well as the pickled cucumber salad; simple but tasty. 3 bucks extra you can get the spicy soup and it's a great deal, flavorful and it's quite large so you can share. The place always seems to be busy, but it didn't take us long at all to find a table and order. Free parking is usually limited but they have a paid structure near the restaurant. I've passed this place up for years going to other restaurants, but I am glad that I finally chose this place to test. Next visit we will get full on meals and try the other options on the menu and I could only assume the food gets better from there. read more

So glad there is finally a XLB restaurant near me! I ordered pick-up last Saturday and it was amazing! I ordered their chef's special, XLB, and garlic cucumbers to share. The chef's special came with a variety of different dumplings so that you can sample a little bit of each of their menu items in one dish. Price wise, they varied from $8-$10 for each dish, but what was most shocking to me was the quantity for their side dishes. For $3, their cucumber side dish could've been saved for part of another meal. My brother and I decided to come eat here after receiving non-existent service at KYURAMEN just down the street. Seating is kind of limited and the setup is mostly for takeout but the vibe was pretty chill for Tuesday evening. The food took a little longer than anticipated but was pretty good. I got the mapo tofu rice bowl which I enjoyed, mapo tofu was delicious. My brother enjoyed the dandan noodles. The soup dumplings and buns were delicious as well. A hidden gem in NY! This restaurant is upstairs in an old mall with decor that is largely untouched since the 80s. Despite the no-frills setting, the restaurant has delicious food and is adorable. I loved the rainbow dumpling sampler as it was a great way to try several flavors at once. I've never had dumplings quite like those before. The braised prawns were also delicious. Now these are some solid dumplings. Well worth the delivery fees on Uber eats plus priority. The Cabbage Pork dumplings were excellent and finely minced. Not a single piece of gristle or anything chewy. The Shrimp Chive dumplings were also fantastic. Both nice portions for the price and plenty left over for the next day. Mr Bao has some top-notch Chinese eats! The bao is fluffy and the dumplings are packed with flavor. Prices are fair too, so you're getting great value. Starting with superb scallion pancakes! I highly recommend the regular ones. Just ask for some extra sauce. We had the fried pork dumplings which were my husband's favorite. They had so much flavor! The soup dumpling were also good. Just not as much flavor as the fried ones. If you like veggies, go for the garlic green beans! They were insane! Crispy, tons of garlic, and a delish sauce, served with rice. We had the handmade chicken lo mein. Usually I'm not a big fan. But this was good. I loved the noodles. We will be back and I'm really looking forward to ordering the soup noodles. The table next to us had them and they looked so good!

The dishes looked fine and the portions were generous. However, the flavors were flat and the sauces were lacking. The room is comfortable (most of their dinnner business seems to be delivery or takeout). The service was attentive.

I was coming home late and had to take the Q train because nothing else was running and decided to do the 15-20 minute hike home and passed this place while I was starving much to my delight. Ordered pan fried dumplings (doesn't specify what type of meat but I assume pork) and sesame noodles. Everything was under $10 - win. I think I had somewhere between 10-12 dumplings in the order. They definitely tasted like pork but kind of sweetened with some kind of sauce in the filling and I kind of liked it. Especially the soy dipping sauce it came with and the skin wasn't too thick and globby - it was thin just like you want them to be. The sesame noodles - very large portion but covered in a thick pre-made paste instead of peanut butter/soy/sesame sauce which it usually goes one way or the other. If you mix it enough, it tastes interesting - not bad - but not good and I've experienced this before. I still can't decide if I like it. It was served warm which I actually wanted when the menu said 'cold' so kudos on that call. The food also came out in less than five minutes and was still warm by the time I finally reached my place. Also, large enough portion that it served as two meals. He even gave me a ton of extra sauce without my having to ask. The true signs of an excellent establishment in my book. Their hot sauce is above average. Two thumbs up. Four stars until I try more of their tantalizing generic meat/rice combos and apps.
