My favorite banh mi place on 8th ave (Thanh da) is only $9 and that's already with the price hike. In comparison, the Mr. Banh Mi I tried here is not as good as some very well-known, longstanding banh mi shops in Brooklyn and Chinatown. Tried the Mr. Banh M $12 and bulgogi beef $15. The Mr. Banh Mi had BBQ pork and the bulgogi beef was a korean-style thinly sliced rib-eye steak.Both were served with mayo, cucumbers, pickled daikon & carrots, and cilantro served on a toasted French baguette. Both were pretty good. Liked the bulgogi one since it's not your typical vietnamese sandwhich. Tried the vermicelli noodles with thinly sliced rib-eye steak $17 and the meat lover's rice box that was lemongrass pork & chicken, bulgogi beef $18. Both came with lettuce, pickled red onions, cucumbers, and pickled daikon & carrots. Both were pretty big portions but that was because there was way more vermicelli noodles and rice underneath the box. There was a lot of meat though and the flavors were alright. Mr. Banh Mi ("MBM") is a tiny shop with four counter-style seats that offers regular and fusion-style Vietnamese bánh mì. MBM is most directly comparable for me with Joju, a small chain in Elmhurst, Queens that set the standard in the 2010's for fusion-style bánh mì. Mr. Banh Mi does some things better than Joju. Bulgogi Beef Sandwich: Mr. Banh Mi's version is hands-down better than Joju's version. MBM's version costs $14 ($15.24 with tax), while Joju's sandwich is slightly less at $12.99 ($14.14 with tax). MBM uses bulgogi beef pieces, compared to Joju's greasy, over-salted beef mince. Mr. Banh Mi's bread is soft, airy, with a slightly crispy crust. I've never liked Joju's bread, and it's even worse these days. Mr. Banh Mi has a respectable protein to carrot slaw ratio, while Joju's sandwiches have a lower-then-ever protein to carrot slaw ratio. Some Joju sandwiches have included kim chi in recent years, which further waters down their flavor. Went to have breakfast at our usual spot on 86th St and while waiting 20 mins (IYKYK there's always a queue at this HK style cafe), my kids walked pass this new storefront and told me about it. Such a cute boutique storefront - hope their Banh Mi is just as good. After breakfast, we decided to look up to see if they deliver - and they do! So we ordered lunch the next day from here. Their baguette was delicious! Crispy yet soft inside and while their filling is not over stuffed, for me it was the quality (the pate was on point! BBQ pork bits - delish) in their filling. We were very happy with our banh mi... however on a 2nd occasion, we may have ordered a tad late (4pm ish) - we notice the bread was not as crispy and was slightly burnt. Also tried their bowl... it was ok, the pork was a bit dry and overpowered by lemongrass. We ordered spring rolls and got a mixed up "fried shrimp rolls"... didn't love it. So we think this is a solid lunch spot and not a late afternoon spot. All ten sandwich options intrigued me, so I defaulted to the house special: The Mr Banh Mi. The baguette is absolutely critical. They boast a high made baguette. It's is ultra flakey and crispy. It reminded me of the toasted footlong that I used to get from Subway approximately twenty years ago. Crumbs went flying with every bite. In terms of ingredients, the standouts to me were the pickled daikon and carrots as well as the mayo. The pickled veggies brought a more firm crunch as well as some sweetness and acidity. Generously plumped on top. I was careful to orient the sandwich vertically in order to optimize the variety of items in each bite. I believe the mayo was a Japanese or similar style. It had a distinct flavor different from western mayo. Service was ultra quick. Sandwich was ready in a couple minutes; just as fast as any deli or bodega. Pricing came out to about $13 and change when factoring in tax. They Jane four seats inside at a window side counter. Most customers were taking out. Definitely my go to banh mi spot when I have this craving now! The recent visit where I ordered the lemongrass pork and a Mr. Banh Mi had me gushing over this place. I was still salivating over the taste hours after consumption omg. I especially loved the lemongrass pork one - on the salty side, but so darn flavorful. They packed the sandwich with sooo much pork too, and while some of the pork pieces were quite fatty, I didn't mind at all because it was just bursting with juices. I immediately wanted a second one! I've been getting food from Mr. Banh Mi since their first week of opening. It replaced Little Saigon Pearl which was in the neighborhood for many years. I was skeptical at first about another Vietnamese food being in this tiny spot, but I'm so glad Mr. Banh Mi didn't disappoint. Of course, I had to try all their banh mi first (hence the restaurant name). I read that they make their own banh mi bread, which is a smaller-ish, soft baguette compared to the usual hard ones you might have gotten from other Vietnamese restaurants. The version here is a modernized spin, which truly elevated this sandwich by using fresh bread and freshly pickled vegetables. The protein offered in the banh mi/bowls are delicious as well, but beware that the pork or chicken chop here doesn't come in a whole chop: It's chopped chops in your food (in case you're not used to that). Only the bulgogi-style beef is piping hot, other meats are usually at room temperature or lukewarm. I also tried their vermicelli salad and they are super refreshing especially during the heat. Wings are soooo delicious! Perfectly sauced and crunchy, think Korean-style wings. Viet coffee is pretty good, too and I'm not usually a coffee drinker. Lastly, service has been friendly overall (card-friendly). I've been serviced by different staff and so far still great experience. Probably on the smaller side of Banh Mi that I have had, but also one of the better breads. It is a tasty one, but also one I kind of wish I had back. The restaurant is very small, if you want to call it that. Only a few stools in the front and nothing else. This is very much a takeout joint, which is a shame because I feel the Banh Mi here need a seat. So many crumbs, just so many crumbs. I really did enjoy the bread here. Glad to see it's a small locally owned family business. The banh mi was fresh and well prepared overall. The bread is made in house from my understanding which is impressive. In terms of texture and taste of the bread it's about average and I've had better at a couple of other Brooklyn Banh Mi spots. The veggies are finely shredded which is different than other spots however I did find it lacking a bit of zest. The minced BBQ pork filling is a take from the OG Banh Mi spot that's been around 40 years in Chinatown. Speaking about filling/cold cuts - it's your usual except banh mi filling just a tad less amount wise compared to others. The traditional mayo and pate was definitely on the light side or lacking. On to the iced Vietnamese coffee pretty decent taste as some decent spots. Overall I give them kudos for baking their own bread and for prep/presentation but price is a factor comparing other banh mi spots in Asian areas as $13 for a banh mi in Bensonhurst vs $8 to $9.50 in Bensonhurst/Sunset Park/Bay Ridge is a tough bite to digest unless possibly yours is significantly better/bigger than the others. This is a very tiny spot off the Main Street. East to miss. Only found it because of yelp and decided it's worth a shot. Service- on point. Quick. Polite and got the order right. Ordered online, said 20 min and food was ready as promised. Food - 3 of us basically got variations of the banh mi noodle bowl. This place is so good! I've been looking for bahn mi places that make the sandwich with shrimp. It's not easy to find. I saw today this place offers it so I ordered with a coconut drink. I think it arrived in 30 minutes! But before it came, the store called to let me know they didn't have a large coconut drink & would send a small with another complimentary beverage. So sweet! Because this small shop is located on the side corner off the busy 86th Street- many of the time it's being overlooked. Ordered the popular Original Banh Mi Sandwich ($10) with their home-made bread, and a hot Vietnamese coffee- great meal combo. For a place called Mr.BahnMi their sandwiches are mediocre at best. I ordered the Baja Fish and the original, bread falls very flat and does not have the crispy/flakiness that usually comes with it. Filling is also very lacking for the price of $13 a sandwich, literally is more mayo then meats in the sandwich. Sandwich has little to no pate which is the best part. This is basically a hole in the wall without much seating at all; it's basically a takeout place. As you know, hot food doesn't travel very well: you put hot food in a container and it basically steams itself to death by condensing moisture in the air, and what you get is damp; there's no such thing as crispy with takeout food. But the banh-mi from here is solid, and despite all this, I love the food from here. Fried Spring Rolls: A- I don't think these are frozen, or at least, they appear to be hand-made. When they arrived home, they weren't crispy, but I'll bet they're crispy when you eat them at the restaurant. Korean Fried Wings: C- An utter disappointment. Very low flavor; breading/crisp outside was very meh. If you're expecting something like Bon Chon, you will be sorely disappointed. Rocket Rolls: A+ Shrimp and ground pork in spring roll pastry. This was magnificent, and didn't get completely soggy on the ride home. The spicy Nước Chấm works well. You get lettuce with the order, but I'm a little mystified why. The lettuce doesn't seem to go well with this; we just diced the lettuce up and threw it into a salad. Tater Tots: B+ They're very good, but again, since this is primarily a take out place, they will not be crispy. But they have good flavor. Crispy Fries: B A good fry, but crispy? Not at all. Great flavor, but they're soggy -- how could they not be soggy? You've just carried them home in a container where they steamed themselves and got all soggy. Would not order again. Mr. Banh Mi: A When you think of banh mi, this is what you're thinking of. Stupendous sandwich. Every bite was perfection. For me, perfection is getting the spicy version and then picking the jalapeño out of the sandwich. The pepper has been in contact with the sandwich, so you get a nice spicy jolt, without the burn of putting jalapeño seeds in your mouth. I would order this with extra mayo and pork pate to make the sandwich extra lubrication. Bulgogi Beef Banh Mi: B+ The bulgogi is excellent, but honestly, it doesn't work as well as it sounds. The bulgogi doesn't mesh with the pickled vegetables and mayo as well as one might think. I was really looking forward to this sandwich, but after eating it, I'd probably prefer to have the Mr. Banh Mi sandwich. Lemongrass Banh Mi: A- Almost as good as Mr. Bani Mi Banh Mi. In the beginning (when they first opened), depending on the day, the baguettes for the Banh Mi's were a hit or miss. It was either stale or perfect, no in between but ever since the revamp/expansion of their menu, it has always been a hit! The customer service is great and the establishment is clean but they do have limited seating. My go-to now is the Eggcellent Banh Mi because the perfectly fried runny eggs on each half is such a game changer! Before the revamp, it was the Mr. Banh Mi as it was loaded and so flavorful. I recommend getting a Vietnamese Coffee or Thai Milk Tea to go along with your food. It's not too sweet, strong in flavor, and you can always ask to adjust the sweetness level.
