I got to try Mr. A's Beignets at the Apex Farmers' Market in Downtown Apex. Parking was available in a city lot, behind the buildings across the street. I was the only one in line, waiting patiently for the teen to take my order. When she finally took my order, all went well, and it took a few minutes to get them made. 3 seemed the smallest amount you could order. They are a good size, so I don't think most people could eat three at once. The first one that was hot was good. But I didn't care for the one I had later that evening, as it didn't taste the same. They come covered in so much powdered sugar, so be warned that it will go everywhere. If I could order just one, I'd stop again, but I wouldn't order three again. read more

I've never had Mr. A Beignets but I have had beignets before. These were delicious. I ordered them from their food truck at a neighborhood event. I was a bit bummed that they only offered their Trio (3 large beignets) or the dozen (13 large beignets). Their normal menu also offers a dozen mini beignets and "add on" beignets. I was excited to try the minis but settled for the regular size. They offered 3 types of dipping sauces - Hershey's chocolate, Hershey's caramel and Nutella for $1 each. They were already heavily dusted with powdered sugar so I didn't bother with the sauces. Now, the beignets...piping hot and pillowy! So delicious. Mine were a tad overcooked so they were thinner than normal but still a yummy treat. I could only eat 2 so I plan to save one for breakfast...I wonder if they'll be good reheated?! I would love to see them have the option for cinnamon sugar as a topping in addition to powdered sugar. I wouldn't say these were any better than other beignets I've had but they're wonderful. I had been passing this food truck for days on my way to visit my dad in hospice down the road. When I saw it open again, I got two orders of powdery goodness. I was so happy with the fresh beignets that looked fantastic and smelled even better. So when I first saw this place, I was imagining simple fried donuts, but when I got there I got these amazing powdered square beignets ($5 for 4). I have to say I was very impressed by how simple yet delicious it was. The beignet was fresh out of the fryer and the dough was perfectly fried. The powdered sugar paired well with the fried dough as well. I am personally a chocolate fan so did wish there was something to drizzle on top, but the beignets were honestly amazing the way they were. Would recommend eating them fresh as they did not taste as great when I got home. I also got their coffee. Nothing too special, but did have an earthy tone to it. I like where this food truck is located in downtown Apex. There are other food trucks next to it making it feel pretty lively. Ample parking as well. Staff is great and very friendly as well. We got these beignets at Peakfest in downtown Apex after seeing the truck around town. They are light on the inside and drenched in powdered sugar. Be prepared to get messy if you order these. My mom and I found Mr. A's at the north end of Topsail Island. She had seen them on social media and couldn't wait to try the beignets. There was a small line of customers waiting and the team in the truck did an excellent job of balancing preparing food with greeting customers. The woman in the window was so kind and my mom was quickly able to order sea turtle shaped beignets. (She loves sea turtles!) And these did not disappoint. Not only were they adorable and prepared really quickly, they were delicious too. I'm not a fan of sweets and these were the perfect balance for me - light, airy and slightly sweet dusted in the powdered sugar. We also opted to try the caramel and chocolate dipping sauces. I'm no stranger to beignets, as my affinity for New Orleans cuisine can attest. They are French pastries commonly served for breakfast and often with powered sugar. Traditionally eaten right after being made, they come out hot and fresh and pretty darned delicious. And now, Downtown Apex (near the Pizza Hut) has a food truck that makes them just the way I like them. My nephew alerted me to a "stand" that makes "square donuts" on Salem St. I had a completely different idea in mind than beignets. Still, I had to check it out because I'm insane for food that keeps me fat. I ordered the "Trio" and they came packaged in the company box with logo to boot. The guys in the truck were laid back and fun and I really wanted to try their chickory coffee but I was already hyped up on espresso, so that will have to wait. But the pastry was fantastic - warm, tasty and soft but firm. Perfect. I have a confession... I did not leave the house intending to come here. I was on my way to sample another local lauded bakery to feed my sweet tooth when this bright yellow food truck caught my eye. When I saw it said beignets I felt a little flutter in my tummy. I've had beignets on the mind for months but haven't been able to find somewhere in the area to partake in these fluffy delights without venturing into a Cajun restaurant. Today, the search ended. I drove past initially and parked at the skate park to see if I could find any information on them (namely Yelp reviews). I checked Yelp to find no profile for them. I then turned to a Google search that only yielded a link to their website. Upon further research I learned that they were a new business. (Less than a week old it turns out) I perused their website (which was pretty great) to look at the menu and to read a little bit of background on the company. After carefully assessing the risk versus reward ratio, I determined that the reward potential outweighed the $5 risk and decided to give them a try. I whipped the car around and pulled in. There were two other people leaving when I arrived. I took it as a good sign and proceeded to the window. I glanced over their menu quickly and saw it closely mirrored the one on their website. I was impressed to see the New Orleans Chicory Coffee (think Cafe du Monde) on both menus as well as other tasty beverage options. The couple who ran this immaculately clean little joint were very sweet and welcoming. I ordered the traditional trio: three beignets topped with powdered sugar. I opted to add honey in addition to the powdered sugar. My order came to grand total of only $5.50! (Note: I paid $0.50 extra to use my card, which is a flat rate per transaction. So it is best to bring cash. But if you're in a cashless pinch, don't let the fee be a deterrent! It's worth the $.50!) After about 5 minutes, my order was ready and wrapped up to go. I quickly thanked them and rushed to the car to unveil my treasures. I slid the plate out of the bag and it was a sight to behold. Golden honey glistening off of these golden brown pillows of goodness dusted with a snowfall of powdered sugar. After taking the requisite picture, I dug in. The honey and sugar melded together divinely to form a warm gooey concoction on top. The inside was light and pillowy and the whole thing literally melted in my mouth. Within minutes, I had devoured all THREE and was covered in powdered sugar. (Ahh satisfaction...) That's when I dusted myself off and returned to thank these two for making my day and find out when they would be returning so that I could partake once again. They'll be on Salem Street between Center and Hunter streets going forward so keep your eyes peeled for the yellow truck. If you see it PULL OVER and enjoy these yummy beignets. This took me back to New Orleans!! I mean wow. They are simply delicious! I ordered the 3 pack of the regular size beignets - they of course come covered in powdered sugar and warm. It melted in my mouth and I had to legit stop myself from eating all three right then and there. Literally had to close the box and put it in the back seat so I couldn't get to it.
