My review may be biased as I've had the fortune to live in Ethiopia and came in with high expectations based on the other reviews. Firstly - menu is pretty limited in scope, but they do have a ton of great vegetarian options. I was really hoping to get some doro wat but this is not available. The veggie dishes were all good, but definitely milder and less spicy than what I'm used to. The tibs was underwhelming and lacked in flavor and depth. Injera itself was great, and prices are reasonable. I also dropped a star for cleanliness. Our table had leftover dried up food that we cleaned up ourselves. The bathroom was a bit of a mess and did not appear hygienic. read more

When I went with a friend, we got the vegetarian platter and their classic chicken dish. I unfortunately have to say that it was just okay. The vegetarian dishes were very good and the bread was flavorful and fresh, but the chicken was a bit dry and not as flavorful as I would have wanted. While this is a perfectly serviceable Ethiopian spot in a pinch, it doesn't beat my favorite in the city. But I would definitely still recommend giving it a try just to chat with the owner and experience some authentic Ethiopian food if it's close and convenient to you. read more

Moya is a superb spot for Ethiopian food in this part of the city. Came here after another spot nearby was closed unexpectedly and so glad we did. We came right as they opened for dinner so the service was quick and easy. The food came out in less than ten minutes and what a feast it was. The vegan sampler platter was enormous contrary to the photo of it looking like a grain bowl. Everything on it from the greens to the lentils was full of flavor and absolutely delicious. Enough to feed 2+ people for sure. I also had ordered a spicy tofu dish as well and THAT was something else. I don't see tofu being used often in Ethiopian restaurants but this was really a hit. Savory, spicy, and filling. Our meal came with a side of injera and I was shocked at how fast it came out too. Vegan sampler comes with braised cabbage, red & yellow lentils, and collard greens; siga tibs is beef. The beef and red lentils were my favorite, both really well seasoned and flavorful. The injera texture is a sponge-y sour dough and I really liked the texture, especially combined with all of the other foods. Being a sour dough base, the injera does have a sour flavor that was a bit overpowering to me in some bites but with the right amount of lentils/meat was well-balanced. I really enjoyed the style of eating as everything is shared and you can create your own bites and flavor combos. There is an amazing metered parking spot right in front of the restaurant BUT there is a sign that you can't park there Mon- Friday before 7PM. More street parking is around the corner, but we drove around a bit until we found a free spot. There are multiple homeless encampments in the area, so the restaurant is kept locked during business hours and an employee will open the door when they see you. Food: Taste was amazing. We ordered the veggie platter which came out in a big bowl on top of injera. For the main dish we ordered beef, which was placed in the middle of the bowl and my only qualm was that this portion was extremely tiny. The beef and veggie platter was about the same price, $17-$18 each, but the portion of beef looked similar to the portion of one item from the veggie platter. Ambiance: The restaurant is very neat--almost corporate looking. The seating area is small with only 5 tables as pictured. You order at the counter and seat yourself. Moya is located in SoMa, San Francisco. The restaurant serves Ethiopian food to locals and the neighboring community. It opened its doors in 2009. The owner is Fana Alemayehu, who comes from the northern region of Tigray. This small, family-run Ethiopian restaurant has been around before and after the hardship from the pandemic of 2020, but their cuisines are here to stay. The layout of the restaurant is simple and tidy enough. It is not noticeably perfect in particular. There are enough seats inside to accommodate the ebb and flow of the place. Service was nothing short of great when I came. It is conveniently nearby Market St. and is a short walk from a BART station. I came here during lunch because it was near where I work. I also was recovering from wisdom teeth surgery and so I knew that Ethiopian food can be soft enough for me to eat. I like that the veggie/vegan sampler plate comes as a large portion. The flavors are bold and it is hard to say what was my favorite part. I recommend coming here for lunch, or even dinner, if you are craving Ethiopian cuisine. read more

When ordering for 3 people, I'd suggest 2 veggie combos and 1 meat dish. (We got 1 veggie combo, 1 chicken dish and 1 beef dish and it seemed quite unbalanced toward the meat side.) The ambiance is stark white walls. Order at the counter. They have coke and a couple of sparkling waters to drink. The table was dirty, as was the bathroom, which alternatingly had no towels or tp. I loved the variety in flavors on the place from the injera to the chickpea soup to the salad it was a medley of textures. It tasted super fresh too and we got a lot of extra bread too! Service: Super quick 10 minutes or so for food to come out and the food was super warm. You order food at the front and they call it out. Solid Ethiopian with generous portions, especially for the veggie sampler. I'm giving this four stars because it's in a weak neighborhood for food; it's quite good for the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. The food here can't stand up to any of the top Ethiopian place in the bay area, like Walia, but if you're in this neighborhood, there aren't really any better options for the portion size and money regardless of the cuisine. Teo tastier, but you'll pay twice as much. You can get a tastier meal at Tortellino or Azalina's for the same price, but you'll get two thirds or half as much food. You can get food that's almost as good at Corridor, but it's going to cost a lot more because you're paying for the trendiness and "atmosphere", etc. The service is always quick and friendly. And, if you want to chat with friends, this place isn't trendy enough to have 80 dB music, so it's easy to have a conversation. read more

Love this place! I used to come here with coworkers a while back and it's really great to see them still going post-pandemic. Growing up in the area, I don't feel like I've ran into many Ethiopian places so this was a nice venture away from the norm! We got the veggie sampler, and the kitfo (beef) served over teff injera. I ordered extra injera since I'm a carbs gal, don't @ me. Served on a giant platter was a beautifully organized set of food. I'm an odd ball so I went around the circle trying everything individually and MAN -- this is the kind of food that really puts a smile on my face. Everything was spiced, season, and distinctly flavorful. I'm a fan of spice and we got medium but I think we could have turned up the heat just a pinch more. Thankfully they had chili powder handy. + the nice woman that worked there hooked it up with some extra injera (again I think she got the vibes lolol) Sometimes I really feel like San Francisco gets grimier everyday - specifically the SoMa area that Moya is in but they really make their mark - like an oasis in a desert.
