VEGAN REVIEW OMG SO AMAZING! Came for lunch before hitting SFMOMA. Shared the loaded tostones to start. Drooling just thinking about it. Sampler platter as my main-- huge, flavorful, filling.
PG&E was supposedly shutting off the power in our neighborhood between nine p.m. and three a.m., and I had just spent six hours of my life watching the Dodgers beat the Blue Jays in the bottom of the 18th inning two nights earlier, so I figured Saluhall would be a good place to watch game 5. I know, I know. It closes at eight on Wednesdays, but I thought it closed at nine or later on all nights, so sue me. In any case, I was still hungry after my actual dinner (review forthcoming) because some idiotic places choose not to make their French fries vegetarian. Sometime around the 7th or 8th inning, I walked upstairs and ordered some Bori Fries from Casa Borinqueña. I'm not sure how I chose Casa Borinqueña. Maybe it was in honor of Enrique Hernández, or maybe I just wanted the closest equivalent of fries still available. I chose the vegan chicken, and it was delicious. Not worth $14, but delicious nonetheless. La Venganza is no longer at Saluhall (RIP), which might be better for Casa Borinqueña's business in the long run, but I liked having two vegan Latino options upstairs. I need to try more things, and hopefully, I will, but who knows when? I ended up having to leave before the game ended because it went past eight, and PG&E didn't end up shutting off our power at all, so I could have watched at home. But Saluhall is a remarkably nice place to watch a game. Maybe I'll try an entree next time.
Built up an appetite browsing through Ikea next door, then crossed into Saluhall, a hip eatery on mid-Market where Casa Borinqueña can be found. The Puerto Rican (PR) stand gave major island vibes and reminded me of the food I would find in Little Caribbean, NYC, but vegan. The sample platter is the way to go with sweet BBQ skewers on a bed of rice and plantains. A PR meal wouldn't be complete without tostones, topped with your choice of chik'n or beef. While you can get one of each, I have a slight preference for the chik'n. Wash it down with a Malta India, a popular carbonated malt drink from PR. Despite its name or bottle shape, it's non-alcoholic. It was a nice touch that Casa Borinqueña carried this; it added to the meal.
Ordered pick up during the week for lunch. We ordered impossible empanadas, sampler plate with vegan chick'n, coco rico soda and impossible mofongo cups. I wanted to try their tres leches but they ran out. I didn't wait long to receive my order and staff had a warm presence. My husband grew up in South Florida with alot of Caribbean influence and he said the food was right on par to what he grew up with especially the sauce! I honestly couldn't tell which was my favorite item because everything was so delicious, savory, and satisfying. I was sad to learn that they would be closing soon. I wish I had tried them sooner to support more often. It's a shame they had to leave saluhall, but I hope they will land somewhere else in the Bay Area so I can follow them and continue to support. We definitely need to retain and have more Caribbean food in the bay.
Casa Borinquena is a feminine form of a person from Puerto Rico. This restaurant located on the second floor of Saluhall serves flavorful Vegan Puerto Rican dishes curated by Chef Lulu. Love the sampler plate we recently tried. Food is fantastic and such a great addition to downtown.. Recently there was an article on sfgate that talked about restaurants exiting Saluhall due to slow sales. Even with an anchor tenant, IKEA, the food hall is experiencing slow sales due to low foot traffic. CB admitted to "sluggish" sales as well. Sad if they can't stay because a lot of people are already dismayed about La Venganza's exit already. While I see so much potential here at Saluhall, I feel that SF needs to have car traffic which encourages pedestrian patronage in some of the main thoroughfares (and dare I say sketchier parts of the city) like certain parts of Market St. Looks like our current Mayor Lurie is taking that step allowing Waymo, so hopefully more progress to come. For your information, taxis, Muni buses, commercial and emergency vehicles are already allowed on Market St. Just no personal vehicles currently. Casa Borinquena is located inside Saluhall, 2nd level on Market between 5th and 6th streets. across the Street from Mason and Market.
Everything was delish. The staff were friendly. There was plenty of seating at dinner time on a Tuesday. It's the only all-vegan restaurant in saluhall. My only complaint is the bathroom code sitch. It would be nice if they gave you the code when you order your food so you don't have to walk allllll the way back and then wait in line for the code when you already have to pee.
The food court area has a lot of great options, but we decided to try Casa Borinquena out for the first time recently. We were excited at the vegetarian options and ordered Relleno de Papa, Mofongo Cups, and a diet coke. The relleno de papa was soft and warm but the dipping sauce really added that extra zing! It is a great dish to share because I prefer simpler tastes, while my husband was able to drench it in sauce and really get a robust flavor. The mofongo cups were my favorite though. The plantain bottom and vegetarian "meat" covered in sauce made for a sweet and savory combination of complex flavors. My husband also added the little bit of sauce that was left to his mofongo cups as well... he couldn't get enough of it. We will definitely be back to sample more of their offerings soon.
Being outside in Downtown San Francisco during a Summer stroll on Market street sometimes the smell of the air isn't pleasant. What helps with the scent is going on a pit stop where the aromatics are pleasing inside. There is a place in downtown San Francisco which has a foodcourt from a country with the most Islands in the world ( Sweden). There are islands of different food vendors inside the Saluhall. There is a food which is from the Island and is part of the USA. This is not Hawaiian Island food it's food from the Latin American Island of Puerto Rico an USA territory. Puerto Rican food is usually found in New York City. Puerto Rican restaurants in the city of San Francisco are limited and one place serving good Puerto Rican food is Casa Borinqueña. Here you find crispy tostones with a sauce that tastes like the Big Mac sauce at Mc Donald's also known as the secret sauce. I got the Sampler Plate which came with Arroz con gandules , BBQ chicken skewers, sweet plantains and a side salad. It was so tasty. They also have vegan dishes. Whether you watch Love Island or visited Alcatraz Island ( most SF natives haven't) come get a taste of the Island of Puerto Rico at Casa Borinqueña in downtown San Francisco. Come get a taste of the Island of the Puerto Rico at the Saluhall Food court with food flavor from the streets of San Juan and a San Juan Beach Resort Some tourist in downtown San Francisco come here to eat before they go to the Airport and if you are born in Puerto Rico then ICE can't get you deported and you don't have to self deport
Out of the last of all the food vendors that's available in Saluhall 2nd floor was Casa Borinquena which specializes in Puerto Rican food. Since everything on its menu were vegan, it was a perfect time to celebrate Veganuary! Loved their cultural decorations and its written history to show off their true colors. The couple of males working at Casa Borinquena were chill. Two selections I tried so far: Arroz con Granules and Mofongo Cups. Keep in mind, the bowl of side dish was Puerto Rican national dish. It's carefully selected blend of ingredients and spices was like dancing in the morning sun, just lukewarm. I should have this for takeout. Mofongo Cups with vegan chicken cubes, hearty despite its lack of dressing. Seeing a pair of plantain filled cups in rich portions made it almost filling. Nicely done for the Puerto Ricans. If anyone really decides to try out what Casa Borinquena has in store, now's the good opportunity while it's still around. Might come back and try another one of their plant based creations if I'm moody.
I was ordering from Casa Borinquena when they were on Shattuck in East Bay! I've always loved their food, so when I had to go into San Francisco for an errand I swung by Saluhall to get my fix. I ordered a pastele plate and took 6 frozen pasteles home to eat at my leisure. No matter what I've ordered from here, I love it all! Chef does an excellent job with everything! If you haven't tried Casa Borinquena, I highly recommend it, best vegan Puerto Rican food I've ever had! Casa Borinquena please come back to East Bay!!
The Vegan Papas Relleno were little crispy ball of heaven filled with the tastiest Impossible beef. I could have eaten a whole plate of them. The Mofongo cups impressed me with that classic, garlicky plantain goodness in these cute little cups, and the vegan chicken filling with that "mama sauce" was just a perfect little bite of Puerto Rican flavor. The place has a really warm, homey vibe, and the folks working there were super friendly. Definitely adding Casa Borinquena to my "must-eat-again" list.
Tried out this place for the first time at the Salu Hall and it was amazing! First of all, the food hall was clean, quiet, not over crowded, and had an IKEA nearby. You can't beat those vibes. Was curious about the vegan options at this place and tried out a few different items with my friend. We got the arroz con gandules, vegan chicken skewers, and the mofongo cups with impossible beef. Had no complaints! Everything had flavor, and was fulfilling. I was really surprised by the chicken skewers. They tasted like Panda Express's orange chicken. Sooo good! The mofongo cups also had a yummy aioli sauce on them. The rice was perfectly made and I was very satisfied. The woman who took our order was super sweet and made everything easy for us. I'm already thinking about when I'll go back to try everything else on their menu :) The only challenge is that parking can be difficult outside but I got lucky with a spot on the street, with it being a Sunday.
My dad grew up in Cuba and there are enough similarities between Cuban and Puerto Rican food that I am always excited to try out a new place like this one. While I have absolutely nothing against vegan food or those who eat it, I just like meat and so I rarely try places like this, but the call of the Puerto Rican menu convinced me to try it out. I am really pleased that I did. The pastelillo was delicious, very impressed with that. Also tried some skewered "chicken" that was actually convincing as a meat substitute, though it kind of tasted like it had store bought bbq sauce on it, so not my favorite. One thing I always love, as simple and plain as they can be, are good tostones and they nailed it here. All in all we were really happy with everything and will probably be back to try some of the other offerings. I never expected to say that about a vegan restaurant, so it speaks to the quality of what we had.
I went to Casa Borinquena the other day for the first time and WOW I've really been missing out. The menu is small but mighty. Everything sounds delicious but the sample plates pack the most punch. I love plantains so having those figure prominently, with delicious rice and plant based chicken, is perfect. The service is incredibly fast and easy, and being at Saluhall, you get to take advantage of other vendors and a full a bar. It felt a little quiet on a Friday night but places like Casa Borinquena definitely make it a destination for me. Go now if you've been waiting. Casa Borinquena is not to be missed. read more
Wepa! Casa Borinquena is anything but boring. Puerto Rican vegan food with all the flavors is far from your typical mall food. Saluhall has two floors of food options. Definitely go upstairs and explore Casa Borinquena. If you're wondering what Market Street has to offer, duck inside IKEA. There are many seating areas. Yes, in addition to IKEA's viral food court, there's so much more. Saluhall opened with all-vegan vendors but things have shifted back to meat and dairy. Case Borinquena is the last standing all-vegan stall. This is Caribbean soul food and it's so good. If you're looking for a salad or something light, this is not for you. This food will fill you up and leave you wanting more. Loaded Tostones is pumped up with nacho-ish toppings. Served with a thick and tasty mama sauce. I was dunking everything into that sauce. I opted for the side of tostones because I was craving the crunchy plantain. It was crisp perfection! Lulu's Famous Pastelillo filled with vegan beef or chicken was another winner for me. The dough was fried perfectly and I loved the chicken filling flavor. Chef's kiss. Coquito cake is on the menu! If you love eggnog, get this right now. I want to return for the sampler plate. At $20, it's cheaper than a flight to Puerto Rico. Pro-tip: first hour of parking is free! read more

Casa Borinquena is my go to at Saluhall. I'll always get the sampler plate of the chicken and onions. The flavors are so great and the whole dish pairs together so well with the salad, rice and beans, protein, and plantains. It's a very comforting meal. If you are ever in the Union Square area, I highly recommend! Saluhall is Ikea's plant forward food hall, separate from the Ikea food hall, and is its own structure attached to the right. There are a bunch of different food vendors in here and you can order at their counter, receive a buzzer to pickup your food when ready, and then sit down to eat wherever you would like. The food is served fairly quickly and there's never really any long waits to order or receive your food. When you are done eating, you can leave your plates where they are and the staff will pick it up. Check it out if you are in the area! I find myself craving Casa Borinquena so I regularly come back and suggest it as a spot to eat at. read more

I cannot sing enough praises for Casa Borinquena! We discovered them because I'm vegan and gluten free, and they have a ton of options for me, but when we got catering from them for my (non vegan) partner's birthday, they were able to make Pernil - a roasted pork that he loves. So our party had something for everyone, and was a huge hit! Prices are reasonable, the team is a delight to work with, and the food is a 10/10. Must try! read more

As I explored the new IKEA next door, I ventured into the new Saluhall plant-forward food hall that is Swedish-inspired and developed by Ingka Centres. I really wanted to try this restaurant on the second floor because I am not familiar with Puerto Rican food that much. So I was lucky when I saw this restaurant post in the Too Good To Go App and got a mystery bag. They don't post anymore, but it's a good marketing to make people aware of their establishment. Side of Arroz con Gandules which is Seasoned yellow rice made with gandules, achiote oil and fragrant seasonings was visually interesting and tasted okay. I was hoping for some strong flavor but for me it was on the bland side. Another reviewer I read wasn't too excited about the rice either. The Deep fried sweet yellow plantains were perfect taste and texture. The salad was fine with the dressing. Would I go back to try their more popular dishes? Sure I would for I am curious about their Relleno de papa Deep fried potato ball filled with seasoned impossible beef picadillo and their Mofongo Cups Deep fried green plantain is mashed into a cup, filled with chopped vegan chicken or impossible beef and drizzled with mama sauce. I am foodie willing to explore different cuisine. read more

Who knew there would be a dedicated place for Puerto Rican food that is 100% vegan. The BBQ platter is a delicious assortment of flavors and very filling. They have vegan Tres Leches! You definitely need to try that -- this dessert is reason enough to visit this place. SO good! Friendly service and the food court offers plenty of seating. The location is a great, clean, lively respite in a somewhat borderline shady location of downtown SF. Walking distance to all the major theaters nearby. read more

Thank you for coming! We are so happy you enjoyed your experience…
I've really enjoyed everything I've eaten at Casa Borinqueña. So far I've had both of the chicken entrees and the mufongo cups. Out of the three, the vegan chicken bbq skewers is my favorite. The bbq sauce is tangy and the vegan chicken has a good texture. The rice is delicious and the plantains are caramelized well. The salad is much needed to lighten the meal. The mufongo cups are a meal in itself. They're made with plantains and you have the option of impossible beef or vegan chicken. I chose beef since I've already had their vegan chicken. It was really good! I think one cup paired with the salad would be a really good entree. The sauce had a nice spice to it. I think a lemon or lime would've given it more acidity. I've yet to try the coquita cake, so I'm definitely coming back for that. Casa Borinqueña is located at Saluhall on the second floor. So the ambiance is really more on the food hall than the restaurant itself. There's plenty of seating a for eating by yourself or for dining with friends. There's a few tables by the wall with outlets for lunch meetings. Service is friendly and fast. This is definitely a must visit if you're at Saluhall. read more
I'm kinda shocked at how nice the new IKEA food hall is. The top floor is especially great, with local vendors instead of IKEA corporate food. I'm a big fan of Puerto Rican food and was a bit skeptical of a vegan version, but I'm a convert! Though they seem have inventory issues as it's not uncommon for them to be out of a few things you may want to order. Pastelillo (Vegan Beef): Nicely deep fried shell that's bubbly and crispy all around. The inside is like a picadillo, with some nice veggies in the mix. Though the fake meat was kinda patty-like, instead of being crumbly. Pinchos: Really delicious for fake chicken. Kinda tastes like those BBQ chicken skewers you get at street fairs, but maybe better? The chicken is both crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It's got that real stringy chicken texture. The BBQ sauce is sweet and full of nice spices and smoky flavor. Mofongo Cups: So it's not mashed like mofongo and is not served with any broth on the side. Instead, it's like fried tostones in the shape of a little cup. Inside are lots of chopped faked chicken bits. Very nice spiced fake chicken and a very yummy meal. So even if the mofongo name is a bit deceptive, it's still delish. Bori Fries w/ Chicken: Love the yuca fries, both crispy on the outside and pasty inside. The sauce is familiar, same creamy sauce that is on everything. Nice chicken, the same spiced stuff in the mofongo cups. CB Juice Pouch - Passionfruit Lemonade: Like those juice bags you had as a kid, but so much better. Love me some passionfruit, which compliments sweet lemonade so well. read more

My order: Pincho (skewer) sampler plate Arroz con gandules (seasoned Puerto Rican rice), sweet yellow plantains, Side salad with two BBQ vegan chicken skewers. $20. Recommended for first timers Nice exposure to cuisine with a sampler. Three tasty sweet yellow plantains. The two skewers had that meaty texture and sweet flavored BBQ sauce. Generous portion of special rice which was tasty. Healthy green side salad included. I hope to try the mofungo cups which look interesting and try the other few menu items. Dined in , the space is very clean, spacious at Saluhall, just wish everything were a bit warmer temperature wise. Saw someone get to go for SF ballgame, not sure how it would hold up at a cold ballgame in the summer?? Thumbs up for my first vegan Puerto Rican try. read more
I came here a while back to finally visit Saluhall and I was not disappointed! I've never had Puerto Rican food and after 2 months later of finally writing the review, the one thing I remember is about the service. I remember the cashier was super nice and goofy and gave us the sampler plate and the loaded yuca fries as a recommendation. He was super silly, and I loved his energy. The portion sizes here are huge and feel hefty. The star of the show in the sampler plate is definitely the vegan chicken skewer. I loved the protein itself, but wasn't a super big fan of the sweet bbq sauce. (My sister liked it though). The yuca fries were also very substantial and I love how yuca itself is very pillowy and feels so comforting to eat! Overall a pretty good restaurant! I'm just super biased about how I like my vegan meat because my dad cooks it super well and I am spoiled by his 5 star cooking, hence the 4 stars. But would totally recommend read more

SERVICE - located on the second floor of Saluhall on Market Street - park in nearby garages or on the street if you can find a spot - order at counter and the buzzer will ring when your food is ready - cashier is very friendly and inviting - food made quickly MENU - Puerto Rican food - all vegan - average price FOOD - tostones with vegan chicken (5/10): smashed fried plantains topped with soy based chicken and drizzled with house sauce. We opted for the chicken over the impossible meat as the protein choice. This dish was just okay, nothing super standout. Everything was cooked well and the portion size was good for sharing. I just can't quit Casa Borinqueña. I've tried looking at the menus of the other places in this hall and telling myself I'll go someplace new. But when you plan in your head an IKEA trip fully knowing you don't need anything, just to go to Casa Borinqueña, you know it's an addiction. The pinchos are a must - whether you get the plate or just the skewers with a side of arroz con gandules. It's sooo delish. Today I got the Bori fries but I usually get the tostones. It is located up stairs of Saluhal along with other restaurants. First time trying Puerto Rican food. Opted in for the sampler plate - $20. Had a choice of vegan chicken skewers or pork (but real pork). I was curious to try the vegan chicken. I didn't mind it that much but the texture was a bit too dense for me. The portion on the plate was very generous. They gave me lots of rice, some cooked plantains, a bit of green salad and the protein. I took half of it home because I also ordered a side of tostones - $6 and it was filling in itself. They were fried perfectly and the dipping sauce paired well with it. read more

This place is really excellent. We ordered the sample platter (pinchos). The vegan meat was delicious and super tasty. They did not skimp on the meat either. The accompanying rice was great and very flavorful. The salad was also good. I really loved the plantains, they were fried perfectly and were a great pairing with the meal. All in all, a 10/10! read more

I left 4 stars bc the food was amazing as always. Unfortunately, the front desk lady needs to be trained on how to greet and speak to customers. She didn't say anything at all literally. I'm pretty sure I saw 2 couples walk away while she was on her phone. I've been coming here since Berkeley days. I've met the owners a few times. They are great. Me and my friend drove an hour to eat here. We were disappointed. I'll just continue to go to my other favorite spot when I'm in town, Mr. Charlie's.... I get my Puerto Rican fix at Sol food near where I live. Parking is already a headache read more

Given the service, I bumped this up to four stars, but if I were being real about it, I'd give the food about a 3 1/2, maybe slightly above that. The idea of Puerto Rican food that's vegan is incredibly novel and what is a pork heavy cuisine. They did a pretty good job, but of course it's hard to nail the flavors as many are tied to the fats that come from what it's cooked with. I got the combo plate of Pinchos. The arroz con Gandules was OK a little bit gummy but not horrible. It needed a little more of a burst of flavor, perhaps using a bit more sazon or sofrito, and a little less water so that the rice will stand on its own and not come together. The Platano was nicely done, but I kind of wish it may be had a little bit of sour cream on it as is often served. The vegan chicken Pincho was an interesting concept that I think mostly worked. It does kind of have a chicken taste. Also, the barbecue sauce was nice. Overall, not a bad plate of food, especially if you're vegan and looking for something different. The service was great, so that was really nice. Not overwhelmed, but I might come back again for the nostalgia sake. Not many Puerto Rican restaurants in the Bay Area. 20 bucks for a plate of food seems a little pricey, but I imagine their overhead is high for their market Street location. I hope they succeed and continue to improve. read more
