I literally got 10 different quotes from all the packing companies I saw on Yelp. Movers Not Shakers had the best quote to pack my 1 bed into a studio. They dropped off the bins a week before. I packed away. On moving day they called to say they were going to be about 20 minutes late, traffic.. it happens. A team of 4 guys came and started moving my bins, took a part my Ikea bed with no problems. I had to leave Astoria to head to Brooklyn to pick up my keys before the leasing office closed, so I left them (my roommate was at the apt packing her stuff too). Got the keys in Brooklyn, and 15 mins later got my first knock on the door and it was the dudes with my stuff! They put back together my bed with ease (no additional cost, I saw a company who charged a reassemble fee!) and then I paid them more tip then I had intended because I was legit impressed with how fast they worked. Alex was very nice to deal with. My coworker had told me about this company, and I will definitely use them again in the future. Customer service was very helpful. Try to catch them during business hours, Mark was helpful a little after 5pm, but it's best if you get them before that. I used this company in March of 2020. I'm writing this review now after using another company and seeing what good service actually is. They pulled the same stuff I see in other reviews. The movers try to extort you for a very large tip because you had a few extra boxes. This place is a scam. Go with a company that charges hourly, you will thank me. I just moved this past weekend with a company in Brooklyn that charges hourly. I moved from Brooklyn to the jersey shore. After it was done, it was about 5-600 cheaper than using this company moving from Manhattan to Brooklyn. And that was with 1.5 hours of driving and 80 bucks in tolls (Brooklyn to jersey). read more

While there seems to be some mixed reviews, my experience was great. Jay and his crew of four were awesome and accommodating. We watched in awe as they meticulously wrapped, packed, stacked, and moved our furniture, fragile artwork and bins down four flights and into the truck with impressive speed and ease. They got us out of Chelsea and into Bushwick in about 3 hours.. well done, guys! This was my first professional move, but the price seemed very fair compared to competition and having the bins included was a huge plus. I read the reviews after I booked these guys & was terrified that I'd made a horrible mistake. The appt was 1-4 on a Fri, a v small window in a v strict Bk Hgts apt bldg. 4 guys + 1 watching the truck. On time, straight to work, lots of boxes, careful removal of antiques, mirrors, semi-packed crap, precious china. Done! Never a suggestion of tip (I gave them $200). They were on time, moved like magicians, were careful & thorough, courteous & professional. As far as cost, I can't say, my friend recommended them & swore they were the best bang for the buck. This company is another moving company scam. They offer you a reasonable flat rate then when it comes post-move charges they throw a number of BS excuses and charges onto your bill. Every hilarious excuse from a estimating a large move to take 5 hours to a 20 minute elevator hiccup that costs $300 to mystery furniture you left out of your synopsis. Movers Not Shakers moved my son and his family about 3 years ago. They stored several pieces of furniture for me for the past 3 years. About 2 months ago they moved my daughter into her new apartment and I asked for delivery of the stored furniture. I had a pair of valuable end tables that were being stored and when they unwrapped them one of them had a leg that had snapped off (I believe the plastic wrap they put around it was too tight). I was going to get it fixed on my own but the mover called his boss who said he will get it fixed for me. I followed up a few times and then finally found out they had disposed of it. I had not opted to insure the move and now Movers and Shakers is offered great me $.60 per pound as their insurance. That comes out to about $2.00 coverage. Nothing was broken or lost but it was disposed of without my permission. I spoke to them several times and they refuse to compensate me any further. I would never recommend them and would highly suggest DO NOT use them. read more

Used this company to move from Washington, DC to Queens, NY, and it was the best move I've ever experienced. I hadn't finished packing when they arrived (early!) but the movers didn't mind helping me get everything ready to go. Packing the truck took a matter of an hour or two (for a 1 bedroom apartment), and unpacking was even quicker. No damage to any items (except a plate that I didn't pack well, my fault). They were incredibly efficient about packing everything, including large furniture items. And, of course, the price was awesome. The guy I usually talk to, "Mark" was always very very helpful. Today I called and got someone named Ryan. He was really rude about the fact that I was asking for a move on such short notice. I realized it was short notice but I was calling to see if they had openings. "We do have an opening, but I gotta tell ya, you're LUCKY there is one and it's gonna cost you a LOT because it's a big slot to fill." Ok ok. Don't bite my head off. I wasn't demanding anything. I was just calling to check! Then he asks what I paid last time. I say $200. He says "There is no WAY I quoted you $200 last time" Well buddy, not only did you quote me that, but that is what I paid! I wish I could give this business one star, but that wouldn't be fair to the movers themselves, who came on time and did a fine job. My main issue is with the business managers/owners, who in true moving company fashion, scammed us out of a few hundred dollars on the day of the move. We've all been there - your items/furniture get assessed by the moving company, they give you a quote, then suddenly moving day comes, and you find yourself shelling out an extra $300 for a hidden fee or a cash payment under the table. This is exactly what happened to us with this moving company. One of the managers/supervisors, Jesse, took a look at the furniture that needed to be moved and quoted us $1000, which is significantly below the market value, as he continued to remind us throughout this experience. Regardless of the discount, the quote was still given, so that's how much we expected to pay. An agreement was sent, where the furniture to be moved was listed and the agreed upon price was again quoted. After the movers came, they told us that they were missing a part that would be necessary to disassemble/assemble a wall unit. They offered to call "their guy" who would take a cash payment with no receipt. We attempted to resolve this with Jesse, who went back and forth between complaining about being inundated with calls, reminding us of the deep discount and having memory lapses of actually looking at the piece of furniture in question. After hours of waiting and dealing with anxious elderly parents, we still ended up paying an extra $250 to disassemble and assemble a wall unit that had originally been included in the agreement. The part that was needed after all this time was... drumroll... an Allen wrench! Talk about a $300 part! After all that nonsense, what do we see in our account on Monday? A charge for $280, with an explanation for fees for extra materials and wardrobes that we literally did not even see. After getting in touch with the owners, we did manage to wrangle that $30 back. Whew! Now we can afford a nice takeout dinner on our non-existent table! read more

Hands down I had a great experience with MNS. I was able to schedule a Saturday move with less than 1 week's notice, and even piggy back off of another friend moving on the same day from BK to Manhattan to save everyone time. Price/Quotes: They offered me flat rate which I strongly preferred. Their price comparable to other companies that only offered hourly rates (based up on expected moving time) and very reasonable, but instead of a 3-man crew I got 4 men! 4 moving ninjas. I found the online quote form great to really help you understand how much stuff you REALLY have. I moved from a 3rd floor walk up to a 5th floor walk up. Mover's nightmare, but these moving ninjas took it in stride and were great. They came 1.5 hours early! Luckily I was ready to get moving, but if I wasn't they seemed like it would have been no big deal to wait until my official starting time. My entire 1 bedroom apartment was loaded up and in the truck in just over an hour. How the hell did they do that? I spent hours of the last week just packing! They wrapped up my furniture and was careful with all my belongings. Not at any point did I feel uncomfortable with how they were treating my stuff. Upon move-in, they tackled 4 flight of stairs with a great attitude and were still able to crack some jokes. Even though I offered food, etc., they only accepted some water and Gatorade throughout the day. I'd highly recommend MNS for anyone moving. I've used other local movers in the past, but when it came time to move this time around, those guys weren't available. In a lot of ways, I lucked out because of this! I was in the process of trying to sublet a coop from the owner, a process which is not for the faint of heart! I reached out to a number of different movers, these guys included (as a friend and her dad had both used them and had a great experience), and Greg got back to me in no time flat. I couldn't guarantee I would get this apartment (though I was pretty sure), but he let me lock in the date I wanted to move without charging my cars -most other companies won't do this. I gave a card to hold the reservation, but he was flexible to let me change the address, date of move etc. which gave me peace of mind. In the past, I rented moving crates elsewhere, but they rented me the same number for just about 1/2 the price. They dropped the crates off ten days before the move which gave me plenty of time to pack, and will pick them up when I give them a ring to do so. Greg and I inventoried my items, for a price that was more than fair. He even spelled out suggestions for tipping, which I appreciated the clarity around. They were able to issue a COI with no problem, and sent it directly to my management company. The morning of the move, the team arrived early, and got straight to work. They moved me out of my apartment in 1.5 hours, packing my furniture in blankets, plastic wrap etc. and fragile items in bubble wrap. They moved me into my new place in under an hour. They accept checks and credit cards for the move which is very convenient. While I'm not eager to move now anytime soon, I'll be sure to use them when I do. read more

Recently I decided to move so I contacted Movers, Not Shakers because I've used them several times in the past. Not only did Greg have an attitude with me about the amount of stuff I had (ESTIMATED) on the list.. they accidentally called me and left me a message calling me crazy. In the inventory list I specifically said I didn't remember how many bins I had used last time and would need help figuring it out. They left me a 21 second message making fun of my estimated inventory list and how I was crazy for estimating the amount of bins I might need. SUPER Professional. Next time make sure you hang up the phone before you start talking shit about customers. Also in the past EVERY TIME I moved with them their movers ALWAYS asked for more tip money. Now that I've read some reviews on Yelp I see that they've done this to other people in the past. It's completely absurd. I gave each of their movers a great tip and it was never a hard move. I've moved many times in NYC (and I do mean *many*), and I thought this company was great. I loved using the Gotham boxes--they worked great during the move, kept everything safe (none of my stuff got broken) and were SO much easier to get rid of than cardboard--the company just comes and hauls them away. I can't say enough good things about Movers Not Shakers. They moved my one bedroom in Brooklyn to a house in New Jersey in about 3 hours time. They did not complain and apparently they didn't break anything! First, MNS's online quote form is excellent. Other movers requested that I read a list over the phone or fax. On their form you simply enter numbers in the appropriate fields to indicate the number of items you have ie: Chairs, Bookcases, bed, computer, etc. A total time saver. They responded asap with a reasonable quote. On moving day, they arrived 10 minutes EARLY ! As promised, there were three guys, a decent sized truck and plenty of moving blankets and plastic wrap to protect my belongings. He and his team helped me get some pieces of furniture down to the street. The head guy, Nasser had a good sense of humor which was very welcome that day since I was beyond stressed. After packing up my apartment, they left promptly for Jersey saying they had another job at noon. By the time I arrived at my new house, they had already started unloading and were done in less than an hour. I can't comment on their real claim to fame which is their "green-ness" as they don't supply the plastic crates for out of state moves. Used these guys for my move from Brooklyn's Windsor Terrace to Long Beach :(. The price I was quoted over the phone was the price we paid even though I ended up with 4 more large boxes than I planned. The 4 guys they sent, were cool as hell and super efficient . I have had terrible moving experiences in the past... Move Masters - 2 hours late, rude, complained the whole time, fairly fast, tacked on charges at the end ($500 pre-tip). And Schleppers - friendly, but took their time because I was paying by the hour, and tacked on charges ($600 pt). But MNS... YAY! Quoted $500 pt with the earth-friendly and user-friendly Gotham boxes (which are awesome by the way). Flat rate. I paid what I was quoted. Now, it started shaky - The boxes were supposed to be delivered at 8am, I called at 9 and the driver gave a vague answer about a lost address, so I spoke with Mark and he actually made ME feel bad about it. I was not ok with this and told him so and he totally redeemed himself. I got the boxes the next morning right on time. They arrived for the move on time (I picked an 8:30am appt to ensure this.) I was moved out of the apt before I could exhale, no waiting around. (large studio to 1br). The entire move was exactly 1.5 hrs - phenomenal. And no complaining or anything; it was, in a word, perfect. Oh! And no deposit. You don't pay a dime until after the move. read more

But I have to shout these guys out for being an incredibly safe, pleasant, and effective service. I just moved a ton of crap from Queens to Brooklyn and the MNS crew (led by a great guy who *I think* was named Alex) packed and moved us with great care and efficiency for a price that was more than reasonable. They took care to organize and label everything, so as to minimize the unpacking ordeal, that two-week purgatory in which you can't find essential things. (Where's my razor!?!?) MNS was recommended to us by our broker when we moved to a new apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn. This was a local move from an apartment in Cobble Hill. Vanessa from MNS visited our apartment prior to preparing an itemized estimate of a packed move. I got estimates from 3 other moving companies, and MNS was the lowest bid. The estimate is a flat rate (as opposed to hourly): $250 for packing materials, $700 to pack, and $1500 to move for a 1.5 bedroom 3rd floor walkup (both origin and destination). So, a total of $2450. Prior to the move, I took all the pictures down off my walls, and I moved the food that was in my fridge and freezer on my own. I also emptied out my enormous desk and packed the junk in all those drawers myself, as a huge amount of it I just needed to sort and recycle. On moving day, MNS uses a combination of reusable, stackable, sturdy green bins and regular cardboard boxes in order to do the packing and moving. The crew showed up on time, and when they thought the estimate was low in terms of the number of boxes, they went back to their warehouse and got more. I was not charged more even though when I got the estimate I was told I would have to pay for what we used, up to 20% over the estimated cost. Their packing process places a clear priority on speed over space-efficiency, so it's really a tradeoff between their flat per-box pricing and the real per-hour labor cost. Since the estimate did not include a specific number of hours of labor, I appreciate that they did not nickle and dime me on the back end about the number of boxes. The guys (a crew of 5) got the entire place packed between 8:30 AM and noon, and were very efficient and cheerful while doing so. They had everything down the stairs, on the truck, and up the stairs at the new place by 2 PM, all in the July heat with no air conditioning. Only one cheap plastic toy was broken out of everything we moved! There was zero complaining or hesitation about what there was to pack and move. They just got it done, and FAST. My last packed move was a very different experience, incredibly slow, and the movers refused to pack various things. MNS didn't blink an eye, though I could hear the guys in Spanish joking about how much stuff I had (mucho mas!). My one complaint is about the disposal of packing materials afterwards. I unpacked everything in one day, and then had to wait another day for them to come pick up the green bins, which in the meantime while stackable were taking up basically all the space in my apartment. However, this is probably because I moved on a Saturday - it's not reasonable to expect someone to come get green bins on a Sunday. I desperately wanted them to also take away the mountain of cardboard boxes that I had collapsed and stacked, and the packing paper that I had bundled, but they wouldn't take it. When you pick your move day, try to line it up with an imminent recycling pickup day! And hire Movers, Not Shakers! read more

This is my second time moving with MNS. They're not cheap and won't be your lowest priced quote. However, both times I used them, they were at my apartment early and ready to go. The first time they packed and moved my entire place. I didn't lift a finger and they knocked the job out in a few hours. The second time around I shopped around and made the mistake of initially booking someone that was by far the cheapest. Well that company no showed, and I called MNS back with my tail between my legs. Greg was super cool and didn't take advantage of my situation. The crew showed up early. They took care of disassembling and reassembling my furniture, put boxes where I wanted them, and packed the remainder of my belongings better than I packed myself. I moved yesterday and had a really good experience with MNS. They were running late but had the curtesy to call and let me know. When they arrived, they got to work right away. They wrapped all of my furniture and got everything out in 45 min. They were careful with my belongings, professional and polite. They arrived at my new apt in a timely manner, unloaded the truck and and brought everything in remarkably quickly. The best part was, they didn't just throw every thing in my new apt and leave. They assembled my bed, and asked where I wanted it. They unwrapped the furniture, and again asked where I wanted it. They were done in 40 min, and left with ALL of my furniture set up, in place and looking like a new home. Movers Not Shakers has changed the way I think about moving.... it doesn't have to be traumatizing. I called around to make sure their prices were fair and competitive (right on par with others, and with a less restrictive inventory policy) and the entire reservation process was easy. I woke up morning of the move, let the men in, and they proceeded to turn my hodge podge of random boxes into something moveable - the closet went into a wardrobe box, smaller boxes got packed away into larger boxes they provided, and before I knew it, they were asking me whether to meet them at my new place. The only thing I would have changed is realizing that I could have caught a ride in their truck. When I finally emerged from the subway, I got a call asking how close I was. "If you had just asked we would have given you a ride!" Didn't matter I guess, because I wasn't even tired from the move. So easy, totally worth the price and a generous tip. read more

I recently had to do a local move from a fifth-floor walkup to the sixth floor in an elevator building. I thought I could do it myself but when I talked about it to some friends and to my dad (who literally just cracked up laughing when I told him I was going to rent a U-Haul and do it alone), I thought maybe I had better explore some options. Movers Not Shakers had the highest quote of everyone that I talked to by about $50 or so, but I went with them anyway. Why? a) They were recommended to me as extremely reliable by a friend who used them last year, b) they offered me a FLAT RATE, which I much preferred to the possibility of another company tacking on added expenses, c) they had the best website of any of the other companies I looked at (huge indicator of their professionalism), complete with an easy-to-use online form for you to fill out to so they- and you- know how much stuff you REALLY have, and d) they were the friendliest, most responsive and non-overbearing people I spoke to. I was able to schedule a Friday middle-of-the-month move with only a week's notice. The person I spoke to on the phone when I actually made the appointment was the same person who had given me my follow-up call after I filled out the online form for an estimate. I get the feeling it's a small business, which is always nice. The movers arrived EXACTLY on time, if not five or ten minutes early- and I had a mid-afternoon appointment, not a morning one. They wrapped my bed and all of my fragile items for me, and they were hugely efficient. Four guys got me out of my one-bedroom on the Upper West Side to a studio in West Harlem- door to door, payment included- in exactly an hour and a half. I was amazed. They didn't lose or forget anything, and nothing broke save a water glass that I didn't wrap very well due to being rushed in the packing process. I'd never used professional movers before. The fact that I just stood there with a coffee and watched these guys take care of everything for me in less time than it would have taken to watch a movie left me with a huge grin on my face. Their name is quite ironic because they definitely feel like shakers. From the moment the movers stepped into my apartment they began trying to raise the price of the move. To start they called and asked me to come earlier, despite still having to pack and run errands I complied. 1. I was moving 1 block between 2 elevator buildings. The mover tried to slap on a few hundred dollars claiming 1 building isn't an elevator building because there were short stairs from the service elevator to the truck- note never had any other movers or furniture companies complain or bring this up before. 2. The representative I spoke to on the phone assured me that the movers would unmount my closet, dissemble it, move it, assemble it, and then mount it again. Instead they unmounted and wrapped as is (just took the shelves out) and refused to mount it back up at the new place - note I paid extra for this service, now I have a closet laying on my ground. The mover kept telling me it can stand on it's own, which it can't, and then it almost fell 3 times, once it almost fell on my mom. 3. I have 2 fragile bookcases that I explained on the phone and in person, needs to be dissembled to move. They refused and now bolts and screws are missing from it. 4. The legs of my coffee table are now bent in. read more

UPDATE: After a bit of a tough move, I am happy to say that Movers not Shakers did follow up with me and partially reimbursed me for my trouble for which I am grateful. I should start, though, by saying that the crew who came to do my actual move was fantastic! HOWEVER-due to planning by HQ and vehicle malfunction, they were 4 HOURS LATE! I took the day off of work (understandably) to be there but because of the delay I also had to miss my evening work event too. I was given no discount whatsover for this major problem. In fact, I was told that any other moving companies wouldn't have even shown up at that point. The lack of care for this huge inconvenience was troubling to say the least. If they don't care about making me wait, why would they care if they break something? Wouldn't "any other mover" do the same? I would never use nor recommend them. We hired these movers primarily because we've never hired the same mover twice, but also because they use reusable bins and wardrobes. They were great! We had them pack for us because the quote for packing our stuff was not that much more than if we packed ourselves. They brought a LOT of guys and they were really efficient about the packing. Here are all the good things: Nothing broke during the move; the price we paid was the estimated price; there were no hidden fees; the materials were included. Also, I was worried about them coming back to pick up our over 100 bins because someone on yelp said they had a problem with that, but one week and one day later, they showed up just when they said they would and took them all away. We had a great experience with MNS. I used their online form to submit a quote request and they responded almost immediately and were very friendly. We spent about a week deciding before we confirmed the quote and scheduled the date. They delivered plastic bins a week prior to our move as well as additional boxes & tape because they happened to be low on bins. We moved from two separate apartments into one. We re-confirmed the quote before starting (I had about 4-5 additional boxes, but the overall move was not a huge one despite the two apartments). They arrived slightly past the scheduled time but were so quick that I didn't mind. They took great care with my furniture (especially since I lived in a 4th-floor walk-up). When they later went to my boyfriend's apartment to load his things, let's just say that my BF had been out too late the night before and wasn't quite ready. The movers quickly and without complaint scooped things into boxes & trash bags and were out the door. At the new location, they set boxes and furniture where we wanted them and put back together whatever had been broken down for the move (e.g. the bed). All told, they finished in about 3.5 hours, went with the originally quoted price despite a higher-than-expected box count (I should add, we paid for their lunch & tipped well and we conveyed that we would tip well before it was all said & done), damaged nothing, and were lenient on our timing for unpacking the crates (which took us about 10 days). The moving was great but the part that left a bitter taste in my mouth was the shakedown by the driver for an overly generous tip. We were moving from UES to Queens and as the crew was finishing packing the truck the driver asked me to come outside to "talk like men." He tried to get an idea of what I was going to tip his crew. For a $1000 move I figured 10-15% was customary and decent. He intimated that it should be more like 20-25% and when a crew has your stuff on a truck and you are trusting them to deliver it on the other end it is a pretty intimidating position to be in as a customer. I relented and ended up giving a 20% tip to the crew of 4-5 guys. The move was quick and we were out in about 2 hrs and moved into our new place in about 90 minutes. The green boxes were great to have, even though we had to argue with them to pick them up quickly after we finished unpacking during the week. read more
