This was our fourth move in five years and our fourth experience with a moving company, so we have plenty to compare it to--and Bek and his team were by far the best we've worked with. They handled both our packing and our interstate move, and from start to finish they were incredibly professional, efficient, and organized. The crew worked quickly without ever sacrificing care or attention to detail. Every single item arrived safely--not one thing was broken, damaged, or misplaced. Somehow they even managed to get our hard taco shells to the new house intact! Standing fan,over 200 cds in black case( my cds that I owned since I was 14 yrs old some are collectible items ,dvds clothing I had inside suction clear bag Canada burnt orange fleece jacket , green old navy vest , jeans from old navy , classic teal color iPod dated in 1990's purple portable washing machine men's denim jeans .(there were no reason to re-tape the boxes if they weren't busted . The items that were on the list the workers didn't want to take and my partner had to bribe them with more money so when the arrived at the location and finished I asked was everything off the truck I couldn't check because I was alone and the one guy said yes while the others were putting the bed back together I tipped each of them $40 each thinking everything was ok . Now 6 months later which I wish I didn't take so long to realize stuff was missing it may not matter to you but my most important is my collectors cds ! I will never get those back and that's why Iam hurting from this!! The owner swore this sort of stuff never happened ! Personal items stolen. Claim denied by a person named Jet at the company because I had no video proof and the stolen items were not listed as part of the move. These items were not supposed to be moved. They showed up 5 hours early with 4 movers instead of the quoted 2. I was blamed by Jet for not keeping my eye on them. The driver charged an additional $100 cash because the cabinets listed to be moved were not listed as glass cabinets. I also tipped them 15% cash of the total for the original quote which they ended up charging me more than the original quote. After paying I had the card cancelled to prevent any additional theft. I had security cameras installed at both locations inside and out in case these thieves return. They packaged everything well and nothing broke. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!!!!! I recently moved out of my home of 20 years and they dumped everything in boxes without labeling. They found a purse I had money put away in and they stole it. They pit me and my husband against each other saying he rushed them to make up for the poor moving job they did. I was treated extremely poorly by a staff member name GREG, when trying to reach a supervisor or owner you will not be able to get through since he is the only one responding (also he might very well be one of the owners). They lost 5 (FIVE) of my items and when I called about it he started screaming asking "don't you think we would have given them to me by now"?!?! All I simple wanted to ask was if they could please be on the lookout and see if there still might be a box somewhere that got left behind. INSTEAD I got treated in the most disrespectful way I ever think I have been treated by anyone in the service industry. We moved about 3 weeks ago, and it was not a great experience with Movers Not Shakers (MNS). First off, the rep working with me was not good. I have hearing loss and the rep didn't appreciate that I asked him to repeat himself a few times over the phone. So not a great start, but this company was referred by a friend so I looked past this. I wished now that I didn't though. The move itself was terrible. The workers are fast and efficient, so I'll give them that. However, with that speed, a few of our items were damaged. The most egregious of which was my desk. The movers literally snapped off an one set of drawers from the desk. When I contacted MNS to replace the drawers with the movers insurance, I was told that IKEA furniture is "susceptible to minor damages during relocation, and they aren't always built to withstand such handling." First of all, it wasn't minor damage. Second, what's the point of purchasing moving insurance if if won't actually cover your stuff? So if you have IKEA furniture, probably look for a different company to move your stuff. Another annoying part was in regards to our couch. We have a fairly large half-sectional. When I initially reached out to MNS, I tried to express to the rep that it is a big couch that we assembled in the apartment, so it will probably have to be taken apart to get it out of the building and into the new one. The rep literally told me that MNS would disassemble the couch and reassemble it in the new apartment. Well, they did neither of those things. When the movers got there in the morning, they said they don't disassemble furniture. So I had to borrow tools from a neighbor and disassemble it myself before they would move it. Then at the new place, not only did they not reassemble it, they left each piece wrapped in Saran wrap and blankets. On that note, they left quite a few things wrapped, which felt lazy to me (especially considering we paid them over $1,600). Due to this experience, I'll never use MNS again, and you should steer clear as well. read more

This company is absolutely horrific and I was shocked to have been treated in such a way. They charged me a small fortune, broke numerous of my items and also lost two boxes. No effort was made on their end to rectify the situation. In addition to this, you will never ever get the owner himself/herself to call you directly - instead he has his unprofessional employees do so. We just moved our apartment from Park Slope to Murray Hill and it was a complicated business, since I have a huge library. Matt offered a good price and Jet handled some post-move complications fairly. And since they use plastic bins rather than boxes, clean up afterward was easy. My only criticism, which echos one below, is that the packing team worked so fast it was hard to keep up with them, which meant that the labeling of bins was not very specific. Nothing was broken but sorting it all out took much longer than it should have. I'd definitely use them again, and you should too; just be sure to specify that you want them to slow down a bit and label precisely. They're all nice guys. read more

If you look at my previous reviews you'll see my last experience with a moving company was a nightmare so I was extremely cautious getting into bed with any moving company ever again.... but as I was moving with just myself and my girlfriend we wouldn't be able to carry everything and it was a Manhattan to Manhattan move so how bad could it be... It everything went fairly smoothly! I would say there was a slight lack of communication in regards to moving time and we did not hear from the movers the day before so we were just hoping they would arrive on our move date, but once they showed up they were able to wrap and pack everything very quickly, take it out of our 3rd floor walk up, then drive over to our new place! Thankfully our new place had an elevator so moving in went fairly smoothly. The movers were real nice and were in and out quickly - for moving a large stuido / small 1 bed the cost came out to ~$550 (plus tip). I will note though that this was as easy a move as possible, couch, few tables, and 4-5 boxes, with the couch being the hardest part, so I can't speak to a move any larger than that but altogether I'd use them again if I was doing a similar move! read more

This company was recommended by a friend who has a personal connection with the owner who I believe is a fellow Red Hook resident (or used to be). I like to support local and since I am moving 5 blocks away from one Red Hook apartment to another, this seemed like a great fit! I filled out the form online and got a call within an hour from Greg Gisson. He was asking the normal questions but - as so many other reviews have stated - was extremely rude, impatient, and condescending. I remained patient and stayed on the line to get the quote. Now, keep in mind, I have a small studio with mostly IKEA furniture that I can either move myself or with a friend. The only thing I need help with is the heavy boxes, the bed, and armoire. I am on the second floor and moving to a first floor apartment. It's not a tough move and will take two hours max. He quoted me $1100 and said they would knock off $150. This is the most absurd thing I have heard. It sounds like it is comprehensive and they dismantle/put things together for you but I have been doing that myself for more than 20 years (and don't mind doing it). Needless to say, I will not be booking this company for my move and have already booked another company that will do it for about $300 + tip (Red Hat Movers). read more

Fully realizing that I'm asking for last-minute moving, I prefaced my call with the fact that I simply wanted to know if they had availability for the coming weekend. Greg ignored this and proceeded to ask me about the elevator/stair situation at my current apartment. When I told him that it's a fifth-floor walk-up he asked how many flights that was, so I reiterated that it's on the fifth floor. He became irritated with me and said, "Well you're the one that lives there, how am I supposed to know how many flights it is?" I should have hung up then. After going through the inventory of furniture, he asked how many boxes I had. I mentioned that I was interested in using the reusable containers, they had. Greg was done. My favorite quote, "You're the one calling on a Monday to move in five days, it's not like I can just get the boxes to you tomorrow." After all this, I decided there would be no way I'm ever going to use this company. Just so incredibly rude and short with someone who's simply asking for information. What a nightmare. read more

This is our third move with them in 12 years, and they were amazing ... again. Came just after 9am, had us out of our 3-bedroom apartment within two hours, and into our new apartment within another 1.5-2 hours. I couldn't believe how fast they were. They are extremely professional, made sure the right things were moved to the right locations, and secured all of the furniture with lots of tape, blankets and wrap. There were some furniture items that I didn't know would survive the trip (Ikea items), but they all did! Plus some things that I wasn't sure would fit, and they did. Everyone wore masks. In addition to some cardboard boxes, they also sent many large plastic bins so we didn't t have to make boxes or waste a lot of cardboard when we were done. We loved the convenience and eco-friendly approach. I hope we never have to move again, but if we do, there's only one call we'd make. I'm disappointed to have to write this review. MNS came recommended by a friend, who had a good experience (only reason I gave 2 stars vs. 1) We moved a week ago. Our moving crew really scammed us. They charged us a hefty (really hefty!) surcharge for all sorts of "additionals", including for items e.g. wardrobe boxes that we had previously discussed with Greg to include. I told them this, but he showed me a manually edited inventory (edited in red ink, so it was obvious!), and claimed main office told them we weren't taking certain items to the new place -- entirely untrue! On top of this, they lost an entire box with all our glassware. Dropped my nightstand (scuffed) and BROKE a cabinet (took it apart, but lost the parts to put back together!). I asked MNS to reimburse us at least for our loss/damages, but their supervisor is unresponsive. Awful experience. Buyer BEWARE. read more

I'm giving two stars because the move itself was handled well and everything arrived intact and on time. It is the experience surrounding the move is what I am writing this review for. Where do I begin. I picked Movers, Not Shakers because my girlfriend had used them multiple times and had a pretty positive experience. At first things started off good. The movers showed up a little earlier than was scheduled but that was ok. They were quick and efficient. They wrapped everything up and were on their way in a little over 2 hours (I lived in1br apt with an elevator in the building). Once they got to the destination (suburban house) they unloaded everything into the basement. It was all pretty well organized and stacked. I was impressed. However when it came time to settle up the foreman pointed out a list he wrote down of objects that were undisclosed on my initial estimate. I'll be honest there were a few extra boxes than I had originally thought and there were some last minute bags of clothes, but nothing egregious, and this was the first I was hearing of it being an issue. At this point he said that if he called in this list to the company they would charge me 500 dollars extra or more unless I "took care" of his crew. Now I was planning on tipping 200 dollars anyway which I felt was a good tip for 4 guys and a pretty short and easy move. However this was not enough according to him and he got very irate when I said I didn't have anymore cash. After a bit of tense back and forth, I finally said fine tell your boss about the extra stuff I don't care. I won't be extorted. They drove off and I spoke to Greg about this incident to which he apologized and stated that no extra charges would be added. However come Monday I get a charge on my credit card from Movers, Not Shakers for 500 dollars over the initial agreed amount. I called Greg to let him know and he said he would call his boss and address it. Later that night I saw on my CC statement that it had indeed been adjusted. I'm glad that it got settled but it caused undue stress. Also of note. I was in a panic because I thought I was missing items it turns out the movers had decided to consolidate items and box them up without telling me so I had to dig through all my items and eventually found them. I don't know how much of an issue this would be if I were unpacking everything instead of storing most of it in a basement but it still caused a few hours of unneeded stress after an already stressful end to the move. Originally I wasn't going to write this review because Greg apologized and said his guys should have known better, but after reading reviews here (I should have done that from the start) I can see that this behavior is common so the more reviews that let people know the better. read more

I keep going back because every team has always been professional, know what they are doing, are careful, efficient, and quick. I have used Movers, Not Shakers twice now (first time 3 years ago, second last month) and cannot recommend them more. Finding a moving company in New York was a daunting task, and I'm so happy I ended up with them. This review is largely about my experience last month, though I had a great experience the first time too. I worked with Vanessa to set up the move and she was just wonderful. I had a lot of questions and kept making changes to the plan and she remained so flexible and friendly. Everything was a little up in the air and stressful with the pandemic and I could not be more thankful for her help in making this go smoothly. Every time we spoke, she was clearly referencing notes from prior communications, and her organization and quick responses made the planning a breeze. She was also careful with her quote, helping me estimate how much stuff I needed to move and what it would cost. Her quote was exactly what I ended up paying, and I appreciated that it was a fixed rate, and more than reasonable. I ended up having the movers pack up all my belongings for me, as I was out of the city, and they did a great job! Every box was labeled as to where things came from in the apartment and it was easy to find things and unpack. I was fine with a basic "throw everything in a box" approach, but Vanessa had offered a more "white glove" packing service if I wanted to pay a little extra. I honestly really appreciated that they were flexible in their offerings and pricing as to what mattered to you. I did really appreciate their use of wardrobe boxes too- all my hanging clothes were hung in a box which made unpacking so much easier. There were a few things I was nervous about breaking, and when I told them, they wrapped them carefully and they arrived perfectly intact. I wasn't there myself, but a friend oversaw the move and said the movers were really friendly and professional! Everything went super smoothly. There was one lamp shade that got broken, and while I totally understand things happen, I reached out to Harry and he's been so helpful! They really went above and beyond to make their customers happy at every stage. I was fairly stressed about this move, and then it was the easiest thing ever. Everyone should use them. We had an excellent experience with Movers Not Shakers from start to finish! These guys were absolute pros--on moving day, they were prompt, courteous, and efficient. We opted to use the packing service for our kitchen items, and everything arrived in perfect condition, saving us a big hassle. We had a number of really heavy and bulky items including a gigantic dresser that weighs as much as a piano, and they handled it without complaint. When our sofa and dining table wouldn't fit through our front door, they used the upstairs entrance and actually lowered them down to the living room over a balcony from the second floor!! We were amazed and grateful. In the past, I've booked budget movers who banged up all my furniture, but Movers Not Shakers delivered everything without so much as a scratch. They were excellent and we will definitely use them for future moves! read more

Worst moving experience I've ever had. And I've seen a few. This is not a serious moving company. They quote me one price then tried to double it after having filled half the truck. They wanted to figure out the final price at the time of unloading which could only make things worse. They office clerk, Greg Gissen, then screamed at me without interruption for minutes at the time while the workers kept bringing out my furniture walking down ramps behind instead of in front dollies resulting in poorly stacked boxes tumbling down on the concrete floor. I asked them to be careful with one thing and one thing only. A mid century modern dresser that sells for close to $1k. I asked them to wrap it in blankets which they brought but didn't use. They flipped the dresser upside down on a dolly with screw heads sticking out scratching the top and bumping corners to crack every edge of the previously perfectly preserved, decades old piece of furniture. In the end the guys left with furniture standing upside down in my apartment so I had to bring friends to flip them right side. And the mover foreman got really aggressive and demanded I tip each of the 4 guys $100 for 2.5h worth of work on a move that was quoted at $500 and I ended up paying $700 for plus $200 in undeserved tips. The whole situation was a nightmare experience. It took me weeks to recover from the extremely hostile behavior. Months later I realized they had left with an antique children's bench that I hadn't even noticed. Avoid at all cost. - Terrible at their job from the front office to the movers. - Extremely rude. - Destroys your furniture. - Extort money they never quoted. read more

"Move and Shake Down" would be a better name Moved mid-June 2020 and with 15+ moves in our lives, Movers not Shakers was the worst. But with the pandemic, they don't seem to care as they have more business than they can handle. The rep Greg was rude and moving so fast, cutting me off in mid-sentence and making errors but wouldn't admit it ( I said moving into a 3 story house- he later said his notes say moving would into a one-story house only is what his notes said so that's what I said and had to pay more. He promised if I packed boxes they would deduct $10 each. I packed most boxes and they never counted just charged me the whole amount. Driver and packers frequently took off their PPE mask and I had to ask to put it back on. Even worse once the truck was loaded and they had all my belongings (and I tipped 5% cash) the driver pounded on my door very angry and demanding a 20% tip with no mask on! Sigh. Moving sucks, and I want to like and recommend these guys. But... I used MNS about 9 years ago for a 1-block move in Brooklyn and it was mostly fine. I loved the green bins and the guys got the job done. I did get a lecture at the end of the move from the foreman who claimed I hadn't been clear enough with the agent about how much stuff I had, so I ended up tipping extra, and it came to around $1200 total. When it came time for my next move I gave them another shot as I just didn't have the bandwidth to shop around. I regret it. With less stuff than the prior move, this move with tip came to $2100. This is for a 1,000 square foot apartment. But worse than the price was my experience with Greg. He was initially cool: went over the inventory list with me, explained everything well, including the fact that I could change this inventory prior to the move and they would adjust the price. Then I had to reschedule my move date several times, and my inventory changed. Finally, three months after our first conversation, I emailed him to adjust the inventory. I knew this would add to the cost and let him know that I understood that. Still, he called me and berated me for making changes. After listening to his diatribe, I said simply, do we have a problem? And he said no, gave me a new quote, and confirmed the move. It was surprising and unnecessary and left a very bad taste in my mouth. Finally, the move was scheduled at 12:30pm; the truck showed up at 8:30am. I made them wait until 10:30 because we were simply not ready, and the guys were cool about it, but it was unnecessarily stressful. Ultimately, I think this was my last go with MNS. read more

I really enjoyed my experience with this moving company! Moving is already dreadful and moving in New York can be overwhelming even if it's just a short move down the street, but MNS was one of the things I didn't ave to worry about with my recent move. This was my first move where I didn't have a friend or man with a van do it so I was pretty nervous from the start. When I reached out to them initially, I spoke with Greg who was efficient and direct and quick to respond; gave me a decent flat rate based off my distance and amount of stuff (this rate was slightly cheaper than the other quotes I received so that was a start). Also, he asked me how flexible my dates were as he recommended that a certain day is often cheaper in the moving world. I appreciated that he was also looking out for my budget when he didn't have to. On the day of the move, the crew came ON TIME! I was surprised because no one is on time in NY and time is often treated as a suggestion. And again, they were efficient and fast and took care with my items (even my cheapie Ikea stuff). I've never had a stress free moving experience and I can finally say I had one. Would definitely recommend MNS, seriously. read more

Don't waste your time! I did a bit of research prior to selecting my movers in Brooklyn, and emailed 3-4 places for an estimate. First off, Movers and Shakers took about twice as long to respond as any of the other companies I reached out to. When I finally heard back, they called me to say that they were "following up on our conversation from this morning regarding your move tomorrow." I clarified that I was not moving "tomorrow," nor had we spoken that morning (or ever, for that matter)--I had just emailed them to request an estimate. They awkwardly mumbled something about how there'd been some confusion (convenient use of the passive voice) and that they'd call me back. I was highly skeptical at this point given their lack of basic logistical organization (mostly, baffled at how they were supposed to move someone the next day without even knowing who that person was), but remained open minded. Another week went by until they reached out again (nevermind I was still a potential customer at this point). At that point, they said they couldn't provide an estimate without sending someone on site, which seems excessive given that the other places I wrote were all able to provide detailed itemized estimates within the $450-$650 range. I insisted on a ballpark estimate and they quoted me for $1,500! (Either because they are a total rip-off, or because they make you fill out a ridiculous long inventory form which turns out is completely inaccurate anyways since they have to send someone in person anyways). I politely answered that that was higher than the other estimates I'd gotten, but thank you. They then asked how much I was looking to spend, and when I responded $450 as a starting point, they proceeded to INSULT me in a mumbling voice and hang up on me. Very professional. FYI, I read through some of the earlier reviews on here and I'm not the first person (client or not) they've insulted for no good reason. Totally unnecessary.
