While wandering the neighbor with our dogs, friend and I stopped into this adorable shop. They have a great selection of high quality foods, treats, and toys. My boxer was over the moon excited getting a new bag of salmon treats. New pet owner who has been going to Mouthfuls for 2 months. I thought this was a great pet store, but I wish I had adventured out sooner. This is a boutique pet store with huge markups. They mark up items to the point where it's not right, bringing my four star down to a two star. My three issues with Mouthfuls is 1 - (my biggest concern) As mentioned, items are significantly marked up, and I know that's probably going to be expected being in this neighborhood, but if you are not looking to spend an extra $5 - $10 on a mediocre product, please reconsider. Example: Before I knew what ingredients to look for regarding pet urine, I asked the staff member for a suggestion and ended up buying Unique Pet Care Odor + Stain Eliminator (see attached) This stuff is minimally effective, and after looking online, other's product reviews confirm that. Out of the two or three options Mouthful's had, this was recommended. The more frustrating part though is the price. $24.99 for a 24 fl. oz. spray bottle. Admittedly, it was a stupid purchase on my part. To put it in perspective, you can get this for $18 on Amazon... or you can get a 32 fl. oz. size for same price at Ace Hardware. Either way, I found the pricing to be ridiculous and now I'm discouraged to ever come back again because I don't know what products are actually worth the buy. 2 - Friendly atmosphere, but staff doesn't seem very knowledgeable when you have questions. This is regarding pet cleaning products or food. Very nice people but that was just my perception. 3 - Parking situation is not ideal. Located near 43rd and North Tennyson in Denver's Highland District is the city's best pet store, an oasis of goods for pets and their owners. Female-owned by a pair of pet lovers, Mouthfuls simply rocks. Great staff and selection within a tightly laid out store that oozes positives about pets. There's a great vibe within this place, and it just feels right every time. We have been lucky to have staffer Bella on the last two visits, and she is an exceptional representative of Mouthfuls, a brilliant young woman who has superb knowledge of the store and of dogs. Our 13YO Labradoodle would love to send Bella & Mouthfuls a thank you note for all the good guidance that has been given her owners, but she hasn't mastered her writing skills to this point. Instead, she is relying on me to funnel her positive thoughts via Yelp. The BEST selection of canine treats is on display, and some of them are so unique. Cannot find many of them here in the Mile High City. Plus, the staff knows what they are consisted of and whether they would be an issue for dogs with any allergy issues. There's a bakery case for pets also, but I haven't swum in those waters to this point. Finally, there is also dog apparel for those cold days in our climate, and they have a lot to offer plus great advice regarding the products. The store is on the smaller side but they are packed with so many things from treats, toys, apparel, harnesses, leashes, etc. They even carry my favorite dog brand, Ruffwear! 7 years ago I had a puppy that was recovering from parvo and although she was all clear her stomach said otherwise. She literally wouldn't eat anything. We were in Tennyson for something and stopped into mouthfuls. One of the workers offered my dog a treat. I explained she had not really been eating for the last month and then they said we'll try this and gave her freeze dried food. she goobled it up. They sent me home with a weeks worth and goats milk to see if it worked for her tummy- it did! I had been to the vet multiple times and hadn't gotten anywhere or any solutions to my hunger strike pup. She now 7 and on a hunger strike again after being attacked by another dog earlier this week. I went back today to get the one food I know she'll eat no matter what. The staff member that helped me when above and beyond to send me home with not only the food and goats milk but also another free sample to help entice her to eat. I'm happy to say that after not eating a full meal since Monday my girl ate a full dinner. This review is honestly 7 years overdue and I'm so indebted to this store for helping me take care of my dog child when I haven't been able to find other options. Mouthfuls is wonderful. Stopped by and was pleasantly surprised they have an entire cat ROOM for food/toys/beds as opposed to just a cat aisle. I found a scratcher set that looked modern and thought my kitties would like it. Turns out it had a bit of cosmetic damage to it, but I was offered a very generous discount. Bought a quality backpack for my pup here last Sunday and he got a treat and lots of attention too. Fast-forward a week later and we are sitting outside eating dinner at Atomic Cowboy and he won't start whining/howling. I love taking our pups to Mouthfuls and they love it too. We always come out of here though spending so much money on treats! Prices are reasonable to your normal pet store chain. There are a number of bones to choose from to make your own doggy goodie bags (chicken feet, turkey sausages, etc). Your dogs nose will be everywhere in this store. The workers are very relaxed and helpful as well. We were shopping for a jacket for our dog and there were a number of times he gotten away from us while we tried on different jackets, and everyone was so patient with us! (Our dog so not so patient) For the record I'm not into clothing for pets, but our rescue is quite skinny and always seems colder than our German Shepherd mix. A sweater fits him well! Anyways, they have an assortment of jackets and sweaters to choose from. Lots of ruffwear and other brands too. Many collars, toys, some dog beds too. I definitely recommend trying this place out. I am not a pet owner but if I was, this is the perfect local spot to find all the things. I wish I could give this place 7 stars to make up for people who have given 1 star reviews based on one bad experience. If I kept my mind made up after 1 bad experience, I wouldn't have eaten chipotle in the past 5 years. But I digress. I love Mouthfuls. I just love it. I'll try to explain why I love it so much, but I don't know if I can really fit it all into a Yelp review. And I want to say that my review is based mostly on the store's edibles, which are the vast majority of the store. Let's get the "negative" out of the way first. This place is more expensive than Petsmart. D'uh!! That's because the quality is the best of the best. Olivea and Root Down are more expensive than McDonald's, but that doesn't get them a 1 star review. My girlfriend and I adopted a dog recently after deciding to bring more organic and whole foods into our own diet. As we were thinking about adopting, we decided that if we were going to care for a dog, we wanted to be able to give it the doggy equivalent of our own more healthy diet. If one doesn't have the time or money to feed a dog a raw diet, the next step is a no grain, high protein kibble like Orijen. But this review is for Mouthfuls, it isn't a treastie on proper dog nutrition. So let me say that while Orijen is more expensive than Iams no matter where you shop, Mouthfuls has the cheapest prices for this and other high quality dog foods anywhere in the area. It is even cheaper than anything I could find online. And if you have the good fortune to live within a 2 (i think) mile radius of the store, they'll deliver! And they have an excellent "barker's dozen" buy twelve get one free on just about anything they sell. Aside from the dog food, the treat selection is beyond compare. We've tried a few different types of all meat treats, and our dog loves them. LOVES them. Loves them like I love 60 degree days in January. They have an impressive selection of rawhide, pig's ears, chicken and turkey biscuits, aliigator and salmon chews... the list goes on. They also sell things like raw bison bones, which drive my dog nuts AND are good for the digestion. How can you make a selection like this even better? Pair it with a knowledgable, friendly, helpful, pet-loving staff. Every time I bring my dog in here, she is treated to free samples of various treats from the staff and as much love and attention as she could want. The staff have also taken large amounts of time to explain different foods, treats, and bones and answer all of my questions. They have even gone as far as to invite me to sample all-organic-fit-for-human-consumption-dog-treats that taste like teddy grahams. Now that's fun! If you're looking to buy the cheapest toy, treat, or food for your dog. This really isn't the place for you. I've always gotten exceptional customer service, but today was especially great. Katie came out and put boots on my dog to try out and it definitely wasn't easy, but she was very patient and gentle with my big dumb dog. She was super helpful when we were picking out sweaters and even gave me a 5lb bag of potato free dog food to try out to help my dog's complexion. My boyfriend suddenly became ill with pneumonia and ended up in the ICU in a medically induced coma...strange way to start a review for a pet food store right?, but hear me out. I am taking care of (or, realistically, have adopted) his amazingly awesome cat, LC! One of the only things that isn't awesome about LC is her tummy issues...she gets constipated! And that constipation has led to some serious poop episodes in the worst locations (by my head for one!)! My boyfriend had been feeding her prescription high fiber kibble...I don't have the prescription and, frankly, I think there may be more holistic options to help LC with her poop problem! I came in and let them know my situation...like I thought, they recommended getting her off the kibble and switching to canned (moist) food...and add some pumpkin on occasion...and then they went above and beyond! Without gushing or even mentioning my boyfriend's fairly dire medical situation(and I am very grateful for this!) I called Mouthfuls last weekend looking for Nature's Logic (the only dog food our little pup will eat). They had one bag left of the chicken flavor and put it on hold for me. I picked it up the following day. When I went to pick it up, I left Sophie in the car. I didn't want her pulling all over the place. A lovely gentleman helped me and even carried the 25 pound bag out to my car for me. I really didn't want to lift it since I'm pregnant. Well, when he saw Sophie in the car, he ran back into the store and got her a few treats, which she LOVED. We started talking and I told him that we were moving out of state and hopefully the 25 pound bag would carry us through until we moved. He offered to get us a smaller bag if we needed something just to make sure Sophie had food. One less thing to worry about! The food was about 5 dollars higher than our old place, but not a big deal in my mind. I did see some cute things, but we usually buy toys and such as Costco. It's cheaper and pretty durable. We were near here when we first moved to Denver and stayed with a friend. We were having trouble with our dog having diarrhea and finally nailed down that it was the same food that we'd always been giving him. So after some unhelpful doctor visits, we came here and found some food that didn't have any of his allergens. They even let us return some open food flavors that our dog didn't like (he's the most picky dog ever). They remember my dog Tucker's name when we come in... and they're always so helpful in choosing treats and chews. The toys seem expensive but the ones I've purchased over the years have stood up to my dog chewing and tugging. The owner is frequently on Next Door offering assistance when people find lost animals. I needed their help this morning when I found a lost dog.
