The manager (Taya...) who eventually let me in appeared visibly inconvenienced and did not offer any greeting or acknowledgment, which felt inconsistent with basic customer service standards--especially during posted business hours. (8pm close) On the other hand, the associate at the front register was exceptional (blonde lady in her late 30s) --friendly, attentive, and genuinely kind. {She even took the time to offer my dog a treat, which was nice amidst the poor service at the door.} While I understand that closing procedures can be time-sensitive, interactions like the one at the door reflect directly on store leadership. I hope this feedback is taken constructively, as the contrast in service was quite noticeable. The one lass rocking the "Punk is definitely not dead," look was pretty quick to get us to where we need to be looking for stuff and was oddly more professional than the Golden Girls rejects that were pretty snooty to us. Just a review for the grooming area, the store has been great. I made an appointment to get my dog groomed & brought her rabies vaccination papers. Rabies is every 3 years, my dog had her dose at the end of 2020, which would make her due the end of this year, 2023. I was told her vaccine is expired and I can't get my dog groomed, even when she agreed rabies is every 3 years. My dog isn't even 3 years old yet, so would be impossible to be expired. Overall just really irritating I wasted my time and was turned away for no reason. Not sure I'd want to trust anyone with my dog who can't count to 3. read more

This store has a terrible policy of advertising prices online that don't match what they offer in the store. For example, today I tried to purchase some tap water conditioner (for an aquarium), which is on the website at about $8 for a 16 oz bottle on their website. That's a pretty good deal, so I tried to order some online for pickup in the store. No dice. I kept getting an error when selecting in store pickup. Hmm. That's odd. I've ordered a lot of things from Petco before and never had any issues. When I went into the store, grabbed the item off the shelf and went to the checkout, they tried to charge me $18+ for the same item. When I asked why it was so much cheaper on their website, the guy said "Everything is cheaper on the website," as though that were some kind of explanation. He then mumbled something about taxes and fees. Pretty swell little scam they got going here! 1) You advertise something at a low price online. 2) Make sure the online checkout/cart doesn't work and 3) When they come in, try to charge them more than twice the price for the item they want. This has got to be illegal, not to mention a crummy way to treat a (formerly) loyal customer and do business in general. After some haggling, I did get the clerk to ring up the item at the advertised online price. But I literally had to go to the website on my phone (while other people waited behind me in line, mind you), type in the item description, wait for the results to come up and show him the price on my phone screen before he would honor it. I'm sure his little computer had the online price right there in front of him the whole time, too. As you can imagine, this was a pretty lame/lousy experience. Chain pet store. You know them, not your local mom and pop shop at the mall but the same everywhere. Petco or PetSmart but Petco doesn't carry their own food to my knowledge. Another example would be Lowe's or Home Depot, same style of store carrying different brands. This location is kiddy corner to Lakeside Amusement Park and between an amazing liquor store (Molly's) and a Planet Fitness. Tons of parking out front of each nearby store. Never had an issue parking here but depending on the time of day you are either front row or walking ten extra spots to the storefront. Huge store but space seems wasted. They have a groomer station inside. A treat bar for your furry friend. Beds, treats, food, clothing, toys, and leashes/harnesses etcetera. They have ferrets here which you don't see that often. Awesome! Fair amount of fish and the usual birds, gerbils, guinea pigs, and other smaller starter pets. Staff has always been friendly but the lines tend to get long for checkout. Always lanes but seems like two to three people work the counter at any one time. Average rating for the size of the store but sparse items and cavernous feel. Not a bad location though! read more

This review is for the grooming department only. I just moved here and brought my golden doodle in for a haircut. I just wanted a trim, I mentioned that I like the style cut he has and we just needed to clean up around his face and trim up the body. The groomer said no problem. I came back to pick up my dog and he was completely shaved. I just wish I was told beforehand while we were discussing what I wanted that they would be shaving him and I would have taken him elsewhere. Very disappointed and will not be back. read more

Ignominious, the one word to describe my experience at the grooming center of this Petco; simply and utterly disgusting. Our dog, Joplin, is a 10 pound chihuahua mix, she's timid and grooming stresses her out. We went to a grooming appointment we made Sunday 1/15 at 9:00am. The groomer went to leash her and she growled and bared teeth, not in an offensive manner, but in a defensive way. The groomer immediately refused service, this is a ten pound dog who is VISIBLY stressed, she didn't even try to calm her down, she got in her face in a noticeably rushed and hectic manner which spooked our, once again, TEN POUND DOG. That lady is a joke, we typically go to the Petco on Colorado Blvd and they have no problem with Joplin, they are patient with her, they take their time to calm her down and they have no issues once she is in the grooming area, the ladies at the 44th street location have no business being groomers, are you really scared of a TEN POUND DOG, best tip you can isn't monetary, it's to find a new job. That isn't even the worst part of it, we have a second dog who was also going to be groomed, but we cancelled his appointment because why would we groom one and not the other? Presumably out of sheer spite of this cancellation, the "unquestionably professional" groomers put a ban on Joplin at any Petco, as we tried scheduling a new appointment at the Colorado Blvd location (where they can actually handle 10 pound stressed dogs) and they wouldn't allow us to create any appointment due to "an incident regarding Joplin"; this is a joke. My fiancee and I have almost exclusively shopped and groomed at Petco, no more, I will not give this company any more of my business, avoid this location, I would give zero stars if possible, pathetic, disgusting. read more

Terrible experience at this Petco location that has caused them to loose a customer forever. I took my two dogs here to get groomed, they are both small, under 15 lbs. This is the second time we have gone there. One of my dogs was visibly nervous about the situation. The groomer came up up her with a leash, not taking into account her nervousness, and came right into my dog's personal space trying to touch her. She barked at the groomer and barred her teeth. Without even trying to speak to us about how she should approach her or trying again, the groomer started to tell us that "this was not the right fit for us" and that they couldn't groom my dog. Again, this was our second time there, the first time we had no issues even though my dogs sentiment was the same. They even told us how great she was after the appointment, and how much they enjoyed her. I am not sure how this is not the "right fit for us" after getting that feedback from them in the previous appointment. I usually take my dogs to get groomed at the Colorado Blvd location, and always have a great experience. They always take into account my dogs nervousness and we have never had an issue there. After we have this experience, we tried to rebook the appointments at the Colorado Blvd location. but when we tried to book, we got an message saying that due to a previous event, we were no longer allowed to book my dog for appointments. Overall, a TERRIBLE experience. If your dog does not have a perfect temperament, or gets scared, do not bring them here. These groomers have no idea how to deal with dogs, and clearly have no interest in trying to do their job. read more

I needed some pet supplies and I was in the northern part of the city, so I used yelp to find a Petco. I typically go to the small petco on Colfax, for context. Also important to note is that I only go to Petco to get cat litter. For pet food, I prefer to support local businesses. This particular location is clean, bright, and well supplied. Of course it is much larger than my usual location. But I will never come here again. They impose (not just PetCo, but any business within a certain radius of Lakeside) a "neighborhood improvement fee" or somesuch, which is not cheap. I purchased a $10 bucket of litter and it ended up costing me about $12. I have no idea if the fee is a flat fee or a percentage, but either way... I'm unlikely to return. Pros: big parking lot, easily accessible to folks living near Lakeside. Great selection. clean. bright. Cons: big box store. Seemingly random and $$ fee imposed on purchase. read more

Kitty groomer did a great, quick job trimming our baby's nails. He had never been to a groomer before and does nip at us at home. The whole appointment was lightning fast, flawless, and friendly. I recently got an aquarium, and I've been coming to this Petco regularly for fish and supplies for the last three months. When a filter stopped working about two weeks ago, I still had the receipt, so I took it back to the store for an exchange. Within a week, the new filter broke as well. I took it back with the return receipt in hand. The man at the register was unfamiliar to me, and instantly began to question me condescendingly. He took the filter to a tank to test it, acting as if I were lying about it being broken. I explained the mechanical issues going on with it, but his demeanor was patronizing, belittling, and very off-putting. He then told me my exchange receipt was not valid to get literally the same item. It was the exact item I had exchanged for 19.99$ only days before, for the same cost. He said my return -with receipt- was only worth 14$, and demanded I pay more money for the same replacement. I was speechless. The other employees at this store have always been kind and helpful, but this man (who seemed to be a manager of some kind) was awful. It's disappointing that a major chain charges customers more money to replace something that is clearly a faulty product, with an actual receipt present. Fish Den is a much better local retailer with excellent selection and great service. Never again, Petco. read more

This review is only for the grooming services, specifically HECTOR! I did get to my appointment early today because I had to take my one year old to another appointment. Getting around and out the door with a one year old isn't easy so I do try to be as early to most things to avoid being late. When I checked into petco Hector (who is not my groomer) looked up my dog and said, "you're early." I stated I know, is it possible to check my dog in early (as grooming appointment take 3-4 hours anyway, what is another 40 min in a kennel). He continued to have a rude attitude and told me he would ask my groomer. As we've used this groomer in the past and she knows my dog, I didn't see what the issue was. Hector was trying to be as un-accommodating as possible. In a rude attitude he told me I would have to wait for my groomer or I could reschedule. It seemed very unnecessary! He wasn't even my groomer and from my interaction with him I WOULD NOT leave my dog in his care to be groomed. He seemed like he didn't like his job and if he is that rude and lacks patience with a customer, I couldn't even imagine his patience with a dog. I do not need to be punished for being early to an appointment. I get that people are on schedules, and I was only asking if I could check my dog in early. The horrible attitude and rudeness was uncalled for. My groomer is extremely pleasant but I will be taking my business elsewhere because I don't need to be treated poorly for inquiring about an early check in! I would suggest that if you use this grooming service at petco to avoid Hector for a more pleasant experience! read more

Petco partners with Ruff Rescue, which does not ensure their dogs have update immunizations. We got our puppy at an event hosted at Petco in conjunction with Ruff Rescue. 4 days later we admitted our puppy with Parvo. If Petco is going to allow a rescue agency to use their facilities, they should ensure those agencies have healthy dogs so contagious diseases are not spread. read more

I just left and am horrified at the service from a woman named Christine here. She was extremely rude and careless. One male Djungarian hamster was attacking all of the other hamsters in the glass. I flagged down Christine to make her aware, to which she said "yeah, they do that". My 2 young children watched as he continued to chase and attack all of the other screaming hamsters and we noticed one was bleeding from the area the hamster was biting. I flagged down Christine again and informed her they were bleeding and scared, and she blew me off and said "I'll get to it when I have time" and rolled her eyes like it was no biggie, while standing literally 1 foot away from the hamsters. Neglect is one of the worst things you can do while caring for animals. My kids and I were looking for hamsters, but had to pass on this place. I just hope they fix the issue ASAP! read more

Hands down my favorite groomer for CATS works here! I had the pleasure of working with Terren aka "THE CAT WHISPERER" in the grooming department. I recently adopted a long haired outdoor/garage cat that was extremely matted. Trying to bathe kitty and work on some of the mattes myself was clearly too stressful for me and kitty. Although shaving a cat is not something I recommend if not a necessity, my new fur baby absolutely needed it. The pain of his mattes is not something I could bare to leave him suffering with. I stopped in at the PetCo grooming salon after being told their (go to) for cat grooming was Terren. I was honestly very apprehensive about the process - like how and the world do they get cats to not scratch them up while grooming them and to stay still long enough to have a nice even cut without hurting kitty? Terren absolutely LOVES working with cats and in-fact his nick name is the cat whisperer because of the clear calming bond he immediately develops with cats. He put my worries to rest and answered all my questions about the process. All cats young old shy scared whatever, he just has a knack for making kitty feel safe and calm. I was able to schedule my Spooky the same day - I brought current vaccines and kitty was ready to go. The pricing surprised me being cats would seem to be a bit more difficult to work with I definitely expected to pay more but for the $70/$80 price range kitty was bathed, nails trimmed, ears cleaned and he got a thorough fancy "LION CUT"/ full body shaved with the exception of his legs, head and end of the tail which were all hand trimmed. When I picked him up he looked great, smelled good, and was in really good spirits as if he had been liberated from his knotted fur coat! :) Terren - THANK YOU SO MUCH for making my cat comfortable, that was honestly my biggest worry and you made my decision one I was so glad I made. You are an asset to the PetCo team and a go to for all my cat lover friends that have been impressed with kitty's new style. Lots of referrals coming your way. read more

I was in the store today (November 11) around 2:30pm. I found what I needed and headed to the registers. I was in line with 4 other people, and there were no staff members at the registers. After about 8 minutes, I stepped out of line and found an employee (a blond guy in his early 20s) flirting with a girl by the fish tanks. When I asked if there was anyone who could help at the registers, he told me he would ask. After another 8 minutes (over 15 total), no one had come. One other customer had already given up and left the store, and I couldn't wait any longer. I brought my items back to the guy (who was still flirting with the girl), told him that I couldn't stay, and asked him to re-shelve my items. He said "cool," and I left. I won't be returning to this store. The only reason it gets two stars is because they carried what I needed. Too bad none of the employees were at the registers to accept my money. read more

I wish I could rate it zero stars. I brought my pet rat back to get treated for a respiratory infection. Despite doing their best to treat him, he didn't make it. That's not my gripe though. What upset me is i never got a refund and they never called me to tell me about his condition. I had to physically go to the store to find out how my pet was doing. Multiple times. My husband went into this location earlier today to get something for our french bulldog. I had been in once before and the staff was incredibly helpful. When they didn't have an item in stock that I was looking for they called over to a nearby Petco location and secured it for me! First of all, our dog has a long history of barking. We have tried training and it hasn't worked for him so as a last resort we decided to finally try what everyone has recommended for us: a bark collar. We were so hesitant, AND WOULD NEVER WANT TO HURT OUR ANIMAL, but we just moved into a new apartment and couldn't have our dog barking and disturbing our close neighbors. So going in with already having hesitations, the staff should have been helpful with our decision (and sure, give their opinion), but to lecture him??? NO. He spoke with a stout, forty-ish woman with short hair that wreaked of cigarette smoke. When she saw what my husband was purchasing, she immediately told him he was making the wrong choice. She spent 15 minutes LECTURING him on the "correct" way to train our dog. He explained to her that we had already tried training, but she would not even open the case of collars without finishing her lecture. Telling him he needed to try lavender, playing classical music like Beethoven, and promising the dog we "aren't leaving forever." She was practically begging my husband to sign our dog up for her training class. Offering discounts and repeating over and over that he was a mistake buying their product. Not the way a SALES associate should act! We are incredibly disappointed with the service at this Petco location and will not be returning. read more

You should know basic policies regarding Petco rewards. Training is also lacking here. Your manager Jada Lynne needs to be trained on how to speak to customers. Incompetent and rude staff. Today I saw multiple bags filled with dead crickets in the reptile section, and when I asked for more (alive, not dead) I was met with the usual derision. They didn't have enough crickets for me (I do request a lot -- got lots of hungry lizards at home), but they gave me all they had and then proceeded to lecture me on asking for too much and claimed they would not be able to provide in the future. Either take my money and give me the product, or don't waste my time. I have a Petsmart much closer and they don't give paying customers any attitude, so maybe I'll take my business and my cash elsewhere. How much are dead crickets worth these days, anyway? read more
