I have a hair dresser there who is related to a friend of mine. Her name is Cassie. Cassie welcomes to her salon and treats me very well. Yes, I pay a bit more for my short hair to be styled but she really knows how to "cut" thin, fine and graying hair. Cost is reasonable and I also tip her as she is good. And the reception welcomes me and thanks me when I leave. Overall, I have been to another salon in Edmonton and I will say I will never go back. Plus I get to hug my hair dresser. Pricing for products is a bit higher than my budget but I get good options and will buy when I have finances. They carry a complete line of Bumble and Bumble products. We were walking through Fringe on the weekend and noticed a sign outside Mousy Brown's that said they now had a barbershop - but the kicker is that it's a walk in barbershop that is pay what you will! In a fancy-ish looking place, we had to ask, but yes, that's their philosophy. I wish they'd do it for women too, but alas. Now, you don't get a fancy wash/head massage or anything, but you do get to choose a cut or shave and that's it. We had to wait for a bit, so we went for a drink and came back. My friend wanted something pretty drastic (because YOLO, right?) and after a consultation, the stylist got to work (I'm really sorry I didn't catch her name, but I believe she is the only one doing the barbershop cuts for now since they just started this service last week). He got a great cut, and we learned that the salon was doing this as a way to give back to the community and to expand their clientele. Love when businesses care! Cassie cut my hair and colored it. I warned her I've had bad experiences with salons coloring my hair. She said her colors were so gentle on the hair compared to store bought colors. She left it in for 45-50 minutes without checking on it. Well my hair has been falling out since. A store bought color has never damaged my hair. She really put them down. She also cut my bangs crooked but she couldn't fix them otherwise they would be way too short. It's the worse haircut I have ever had. The bangs have long pieces in the middle. My mom also saw her and it didn't go well. I was told she specializes in blonde color and was excellent. Oh boy. Finding it hard to work with the haircut. The bangs look so goofy. I've been going here since it was Shanti, and although the name and some of the staff has changed, they still give a great cut! The salon has a relaxed and casual atmosphere, unlike some places which seem too hip for their own good. Everyone is genuinely friendly and my stylist always remembers what was going on in my life the last time I visited. I finally decided to spend more than I usually do for a haircut, and chose Shanti because it's close to where I live, and I heard lots of good stuff about it. Stepping in, I could automatically tell that it's not your average salon. The colourful walls and fixtures in the place give it extra charm, while exotic music in the background instantly relaxes you. The girl at the desk was really friendly and told me that my original stylist was unfortunately held up in Vancouver, due to the harsh weather. Understandable, as I heard it's been insanely white over there. She told me that Barb would be doing my hair instead, and I proceeded to wait by sitting on a comfy lounge seat by the window. I didn't have to wait long, as Barb came over in a few minutes and introduced herself. I immediately took to her. She has such great style; I found myself wishing I could pull off a corset top and suspenders like she did. I exchanged my cardigan for one of their robes, and then Barb gave me a relaxing head massage. Actually, relaxing doesn't describe it -- I almost fell asleep because it was so soothing. I could feel all my stress and tension melt away as her fingertips kneaded my scalp. I wish I could get a massage like that everyday! Afterwards, she asked me what I had in mind for a cut, and I told her what I was basically looking for. Barb nodded and then started playing around with my hair, telling me her ideas and what we could do. I could tell she was a real artist with hair and is really passionate about it, the way she described it to me. I started to get really excited just hearing her ideas. I sipped my complimentary tea as we chatted and joked freely as she washed and cut my hair. I don't think I've ever had a stylist that I've talked to so easily. We talked about work, relationships, friends, family, everything. I also liked that she faced my hair towards the window, explaining that she liked to use the natural light to do her work. In the end, it was exactly what I wanted because I was looking for something totally different, and Barb was able to give that to me. My cut came to about $55, not bad considering their range is $40-$70 for women's cuts. I saw that they also did waxing here, so I think I might give that a try when the need arises. Before leaving, I browsed through their natural styling products and jewelry for sale. Lots of cute stuff in the jewelry, but a bit too funky for my taste. I used to get my hair cut regularly at Shanti and I always had good experiences. At my very first appointment, they ended up being almost an hour behind schedule due to the person before me booking a colouring without telling them she had the most hair of anyone ever. They called me to let me know that my appointment would be delayed and then when I showed up, they gave me some extra treatments for free. My other visits were good too, although with no more freebies :) My stylist was friendly and actually listened to what I asked for! They seemed to be catering to both people who actually know things about hair, and also to people like me who want something that will still look ok when I only spend 30 seconds on it in the morning. I was always pleased with the cuts I received here, and the only reason I don't go here anymore is that getting from Oliver to Whyte ave is kind of a pain, and I wanted to find somewhere closer to home. read more

I've been going here for years now (previously downtown one) I always try to see a junior stylist when I go as i never get anything fancy done, just a trim. The girls I've had always help, more recently I went in earlier June and my hair was sooooo damaged from all the hair dye I had been doing it was breaking so bad! Thankfully the hairdresser took enough without taking too much she also used great product and gave my hair a nice mask! I don't find them to push product at all, they also have an assortment of tea, coffee, latte.. Only place ill probably stick to. Only thing I don't like is that when you change into your robe you have to leave your clothes hanging in the change room with everyone else. read more

I usually only get my hair cut 2 times a year (grad student life) so I almost always have to find a new stylist when I do. I have had many bad haircuts, but thankfully my cut at Mousy Browns was not one of those times! I was easily able to book in (that week) with a stylist (versus a senior stylist), and they were even very nice and accommodating when I asked last minute to move my appointment to an earlier time. I had Kaylyn as my stylist and she did an awesome job. From the incredible head massage and hair wash, to her tips on how to lighten my thick hair and blend the awful layers from my last cut, she was great. I asked for a curled style since I was going out after the cut, and most stylists in the past have told me no because they didn't allot enough time for my thick hair, but she took her time and made my hair look fabulous! I live in the area, so parking wasn't something I needed to worry about, but there are many side streets a few blocks away if you don't want to pay for parking. One other tip, the debit and credit machine doesn't offer a tip option, cash only tips so make sure you bring cash to tip with excellent service you will get at Mousy Browns! read more

She didn't listen and cut it way too short and when I washed it and did it myself, I discovered that it is cut extremely uneven - to the point where my friends have commented. I don't usually take the time to review places, but I really appreciated the experience I had at Mousy browns. The stylist that did my hair, Tasha, was super sweet and worked really hard on it and it looked fantastic at the end. Even though I was in LOVE with my cut, I was a little bit disappointed about the colour and she noticed and booked me in for the next day for free and then spent an hour deepening the colour so that it would be darker the way I wanted it. They also offered me this really tasty all natural tea which I fell in love with. The salon itself is at a good location. The interior is aesthetically appealing and chic with lots of bright sunlight and an open layout. This is probably the best customer experience I have ever had at a salon and would definitely recommend if you are looking for a stylish haircut and colour/highlights. read more

I wanted to add to my previous review. After I posted the review the owner of the salon did message me (though I did not see it for several weeks due to not coming on for a while). The owner wanted to apologize for my less than perfect experience and offer a complimentary hair cut on my next visit.... As I had said in my previous review, I thought I may try the salon again...which I did, but not due to the above comment from the owner but more because the color held in my hair very well and I was impressed with that! So I booked a color appointment with no reference to the letter from the owner. My experience today was better than my first. Initially I was not impressed again because I just came in and told the girl who I was here and she told me the stylist was running behind by 20 minutes and I could go and run for a coffee...which I may have done if the weather would have been nicer and parking was not horrible...instead I decided to wait and look at magazines. The girl offered me some coffee or water, I chose water. A guy came in after me and a different girl approached him offering to take his jacket and offered him some herbal tea, coffee or water etc. So I found it interesting that the girl that talked to me did not offer to take my jacket or offer me tea (because I have a tea obsession and definitely would have chosen that). In all actuality it was not the end of the world...I just found it interesting the difference service by different girls. I had my hair colored by Shanti, she took time to ask for the exact color I wanted and asked for a picture if I had one for a reference. I had one and she had a few to compare as well. I made it a 100% clear NO red...and she satisfied my request a 100%!! She knew her stuff and even did two applications to make sure the color held to my stubborn hair. I have upgraded my rating to 4 stars, and would go again for a color forsure...I still need to try another cut at some point.... read more

I've had my hair done by virtually every Shanti stylist and I've always been confident they'll do a good job. I trust this bunch implicitly. They're a trendy, hip-looking group who stay up-to-date on the latest in haircut and colour trends. They take their time with you to make sure they understand what you want. If you have any allergies, you may want to know that Shanti has a tiny in-house dog that everyone worships. Like many boutique-type salons cropping up these days, there's an in-house esthetician named Jane who gives facials and does waxing and make-up. She's super laid-back and a perfectionist - so no stray hairs when it comes to your eyebrows or bikini line. There's also no attitude here, only friendly, thoughtful service. A couple years ago, I "divorced" my former stylist and went looking for a new one. I can't quite remember how I decided to try out Mousy Brown's, but I'm so glad I did. Kajal has been styling my hair for about a year and a half now, and she is wonderful! She listens to my concerns and ideas, makes great suggestions, and I always come away feeling like a million bucks! I trust her implicitly. Last year, after I made a dramatic change in my style, Kaj called me a couple days later just to make sure I was happy and comfortable with the new look. I have been going to mousy browns since it has opened. I have always found a stylist and then they leave. The latest stylist i tried at this location, name is Devon. She was a nice girl. I just hate how my hair turned out and feel it was a waste of the $200. I asked for warm brown tone mixed with my blonde. She gave me a very bland tone brown and it looks Horrible. It just over all disaster. And i look horrible. Since this experience i dont think ill be returning. I also felt rushed and that she didnt so what i asked for. read more

I came after seeing the great reviews on yelp. However, out of all the places I've gotten my bangs done, this place did it the worst. I even showed the hairdresser a picture and she just could not get it right. Not to mention she was incredibly socially awkward and I found myself being asked the same question repeatedly (she clearly was not listening to me, which makes sense because my bangs were awful). I understand she was likely concentrating on my hair but come on! I was also brought a drink and it was put on her work station -she never gave it to me (and obviously noticed it). A few days later, I emailed another employee about a service and never got a response (I guess they don't check their emails associated with the store?). Yeah, not coming back, which is unfortunate because it's so close by. I really regret trying somewhere new, I should have continued going to Aveda on Whyte. read more

Mousy's is by far the best / most professional salon I have ever been to. You can tell when observing that all the stylists are extremely well trained. With that being said, you should be safe booking with a junior stylist which will be at a reasonable price point. If you want a senior stylist, the price will be a bit higher but you can guarantee you won't be disappointed - everyone leaves there looking fantastic! I have been going to Mousy browns for a few years now. I cant imagine getting my haircut from anywhere else! The receptionists are always so sweet. Doesn't matter what time you call, it could be 8am they are always so cheerful and ready to help. Walking in there , you feel special! They ask you if you want anything to drink, they take your coat off for you and hang it up! Its like you're going to a friends house. Every time I get my hair cut from there. My hair stylist knows what's I like. and if I wanna change it up after the cuts been down, she's open to ideas and will make sure I don't leave till im completely satisfied! Ugh, worst haircut, worst color EVER! I had dark brown hair and wanted a color correction to go blond. She suggested we do highlights until it's blond. Ok. She toned the highlights reddish, even though I said I hated red. Sigh. Haircut was not good.. rat tail and crooked bangs. Next time, she wanted to do an all over lighten. My hair was SO dry and crispy, I didn't think it was possible. She toned it a weird orange pink color, which she didn't tell me she was going to do this. I didn't get to choose the color of my own hair? Haircut was Bad, crooked bangs again, and she cut one side of my hair shorter than the other. She left dye all over my face, ears and back of my neck. Next time, I said that If it wasn't a color I asked for (still asking for blond) This would be the last appointment I come in for. She lightened it again and made it almost the same freaking color as the last time! Processed my hair for no reason. I was so pissed. She took an hour and a half longer than what my appointment should have been, and made me super late for a banquet. She left dye all over my neck, and also dumped water all down my back when she washed the color out. The haircut was the worst ever... she made the center of my bangs shorter than the rest, with a chunk cut out. I had asked for straight bangs. I was mortified and sat crying in her chair. She said absolutely nothing, even though I was crying! So in humane! This stylist is Kahjol at the south side location. She is not a very good stylist, and I gave her so many chances. I had been searching for a stylist that was good with my natural curls. I went to Shanti, and finally found one! Christina Kier was my stylist for over a year, and every visit was entertaining, and I walked out happy with my hair everytime! Now to why I give it a 3 out of 5 stars. I called to set up a appointment and found that she had left. Luckily the receptionist told me she had started with Icon Hair Gallery. I went, and was so happy to hear that she had bought the Salon. Second time I've gone to Mousy Browns and I got another lousy hair cut. What is wrong with these hairdressers (no you do not deserve the name "stylist") can you not cut hair??? Haircut looked great all flat ironed and then when I got home and had to wash it well lets just say it looked like I cut it myself. Went back to get it fixed and I'm not sure what happened to the chatty "hairdresser" I had before but all of a sudden she didn't feel the need to talk to me the whole time she was fixing my hair. I was looking for a new stylist and tried Mousy Browns. I went with a Junior Stylist because it was cheaper. My hair is very damaged and she knew what to do to make sure it didn't break off anymore! She gave me what I asked for, which was more blonde. She seemed very precise and knew what she was doing. Everyone who works there was very kind and they didn't pressure me to buy a bunch of products which is nice. My only complaint was that I wished my stylist would've talked. She only said a few things at the start and I've been to her twice. But overall I would recommend going here!!! Great place with well trained stylists. read more

Terrible experience . Worst cut and colour ever . My colour looked better before I walked in this hair salon . Dark spots all over my blonde ( looked like a leopard) . Had a shiny blonde , wanted to fix my roots but what a disappointment after having it done . Turned out muddy looking , dull blonde on the ends , and grey hair wasn't covered at all . Blotchy , just a very bad job . Asked to keep the length and got it chopped off instead . And to top it all up - it's uneven - one side is an inch longer than the other . I don't have enough good things to say about Mousy Browns. I've frequented both the 124th Street location since 2007 and more recently Whyte Ave since moving to the south side. Although every hairdresser had their own style and personality, I've always been treated kindly by both the front end and salon staff. Booking online makes getting in for an appointment a breeze! I've recently been getting my hair done by Tasha. She's fairly new to Mousy but has been in the industry awhile. She listens to what you want and is really chill. If you're looking for someone to chat your ear off, don't see Tasha or really any stylists at Mousy Browns. They try to keep a fairly calm and quiet atmosphere which I really appreciate. They recently expanded to carrying more products than bumble and bumble. Stylists suggest but don't push product on you to buy. Hot drinks or water are always offered on arrival. A beautiful salon with great staff. Would definitely recommend a trip to Mousy Browns! read more

All I can say is be careful who you get. I booked in for a tidy up cut for long hair. The stylist took it apon them selves to cut a big thick fringe without asking or saying a word to me. So while sitting there I thought ok i can get used to it i supose. After trimming and tidying my long hair as i had asked. They then proceeded to what i thought thin out the big thick fringe they had made but to my horror when i opened my eyes they had cut it to nearly half way up my forehead with it getting shorter in the middle. Giving me a long square looking face. When i said omg i dont usally have a fringe like this they proceeded to say this was the fashion. This stylist was clearly very inexperienced. When I got home my friends and family could not believe how rediculas It looks. I didn't complain at the time I think I was still in shock wish I could rewind the whole experience. Unfortunately, I had a really bad experience at the downtown location. A long time ago I got a cut here that I absolutely loved, and when I received an e-mail for 40% services I decided to try them again. I believe my appointment was with Erin, but I can't be sure because I don't remember her name. She wasn't friendly at all. I told Erin that I wanted my hair cut around "mid-neck" level, and that I wanted long layers. She told me she doesn't do layers on a bob because it'll look like a shag - that was the first time I heard that, but fine. Then I requested that she part my hair before cutting it. Even though the stylists are trained to part it down the middle, my hair always does better when it is parted to the side (the same part I've had for YEARS) - Erin made a snarky comment that in her 15 years she'd never cut hair like that. After that, she barely said anything to me - very few directions about what where to go, what was happening, or what she was doing. She didn't ask me how I normally wear my hair or how I wanted it styled. No small talk whatsoever; we sat in silence. I have no idea what products she used. I didn't even realize we were done until she took off my apron and said that was it. She didn't show me the back of my hair or ask me if I liked it. She was also really rough and didn't move the hair dryer enough to prevent feeling burned. The cut is really unremarkable and I hate it. Before posting an online review, I sent feedback to the salon. Two days later, I haven't received a reply. There are other salons in downtown/central Edmonton that give better customer service, so I won't be returning. read more
