This place continues to impress me, visit after visit! So, a few years ago my hairstylist of choice decided to pursue a different career entirely. I was frustrated by this because I had had some pretty bad experiences in the past with other salons and hairstylists. So, I chose to search on Yelp and read the reviews. This is how I ended up finding Ponytails + Horseshoes: the Yelp reviews were so awesome that I couldn't resist, particularly given that I was planning on spending a pretty penny on a good haircut. I have now had three haircuts there and have been very impressed with the service that I have gotten with Brent. He gave me a low maintenance style on three different occasions which has been wonderful as I really don't want to spend too much time getting prepped for my day in the morning! In addition, I'm a big fan of the fact that they carry products that do not contain any of the compounds in them that I'm trying to avoid in my personal care products. I even love how my Renu shampoo and conditioner smells which is a wonderful way to start my day! The only thing that could make my visits better is if I could afford (and make the time) to visit the salon more frequently. read more

**Update on negative review** I received a call from the management the next day with an offer of a free hack the next time I need one. She was extremely kind and courteous and genuinely wanted me to have a better experience. Review changed from 2 stars to 4. I had my haircut by Tommy and am not pleased. I thought he understood what I wanted, but he took my instructions and went way too far. I didnt realize how much he was shaving in the back until it wasn't over. It looks like I have a toupee on my head, instead of a head of hair that's my own. His response to my saying that it was "shorter than I'd wanted," was "well I can't put the hair back on your head!" . I would've just sucked it up, but I was quoted a price of $45 and wound up being charged $62+ tax... no colour, no style. Just a cut... I would not recommend. read more

I can't believe it's taken me this long to review P+H! I've been getting my hair done here for almost two years now with two different stylists: the first was amazing but left to go back to school so for my last two visits, I've had the pleasure of working with Nicolette. First off, Nicolette is awesome. She's talented and funny. I always love chatting with her during my appointments. She also does a great job on my hair by offering suggestions and giving me good ideas about what will and will not work with my hair. I've never left disappointed. The thing I like most about P+H is that everyone seems to be having a great time working there. Having a healthy work environment definitely trickles down to the customer experience. I have been to PoHo about 10 times. I see Tommy and I can't imagine seeing anyone else. He is fun and always does a great job. My hair is easy to manage and cut but he never rushes me. Scalp massages during washing are divine. The vibe of the salon is nice. It's pretty inside and all of the staff have always been lovely. My only complaint is they don't put enough of Tommy on social media. ;) read more

Reply- I'm sorry this review is going to sound mean but I have to be honest because of how upset I am about this whole experience. First, Nikki said she knows how to cut curly hair and so I trusted her to give me layers. I specifically said to please just give me a trim and some volume. I was particular about keeping my length because I spent a year growing out my curls. She didn't even bother to ask how short I want my layers, didn't check with me before she started cutting and was done in 10 minutes. Umm I have really long curly hair, and the fact that she finished the haircut in 10 minutes explains a lot about how much care and attention she put in cutting my hair. It looked so choppy and when I came home and it fully dried it looked horrible. Deadass, like the top layers of my hair made me look like Dora because they were SO SHORT and the bottom layers were still long. (My hair looked exactly like the picture I attached) Yea, that horrible. So a few tips, instead of rushing through a haircut and forcing small talk, Nikki could've taken a little bit of time asking more about what I want my curls to look like and checking with me before she cut off half my hair. What kind of service is that? I spent so long growing out my curly hair and now I have the most choppy looking layers and I feel like I can't even wear my hair out. I went back and saw Hayley and she tried to fix it but it doesn't look any less worse. No joke- I honestly wanted to cry after I saw my curls. So to any curly girls out there: DON'T GET CURLY HAIR SERVICES FROM HERE, THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO CUT OR STYLE CURLY HAIR. please just do yourself a favor and cut your own curls, it will probably turn out better than they do it. Again, I don't intend to ruin anyone's day with this review, I'm sorry if I did, but by the fact that I took the time to type ALL of this, you can imagine how upset and hurt I am over this horrible, horrible haircut and experience. Like they were super nice the whole time but that doesn't matter because I ended up with with WORST HAIRCUT ever that I will never get a haircut anywhere again. This was my first visit. I have been looking for a good cut/ style for a couple of years. I've had a series of stylists who simply didn't listen. I tried Ponytails +horseshoes on the basis of yelp reviews and had Catherine as my stylist. She was friendly and really listened to me. I have hair that is thick but fine and has a reasonable amount of curl. So it is not the easiest to style. Catherine cut the hair really well and was quick as well. She is a very nice person and I had a lovely time chatting as she worked. The salon has a good vibe and is well set up. There is also underground parking which is nice in the winter. I would absolutely recommend that you give them a try. read more

I've gone to PoHo for 2 years before switching salons due to a move, and had my hair done by several different stylists here. Overall, my experience with most of their stylists have been positive. Special shoutouts to Kiran, who gave me two fantastic haircuts including an awesome bob, and Edmund, who became my regular there! Edmund is just fantastic, and works hard to accommodate what *I* truly want in a hairstyle/haircut. He's what has kept me coming back. The two negative experiences I've had here were as follows. One was with a younger apprentice who gave me a lopsided bob. When I realized what happened, I called the salon and they gave me a free touchup (by Kiran!) to correct the haircut. Although this resulted in my hair being way shorter than I originally wanted, I didn't mind too much because of how wonderfully they handled it. The one TRULY negative experience I had here was with stylist Tommy (Edmund wasn't available that day). I went to him to get some simple curls - I specified I wanted them to be loose and wavy. I ended up with a head full of tight curls in huge lumps on my head - nothing like what I usually get done at this salon. When I asked him to add a few smaller curls on top to break things up a bit, he actually rolled his eyes at me, and looked obviously annoyed. He put a few extra curls in there in a rush, but by that point I just wanted to get out of the seat and leave the salon. His attitude was so off-putting and the curls were not what I wanted at all, so I ended up going home and washing out the huge lumps. Overall, PoHo is a great salon full of lots of talent, but I can't recommend it as strongly due to my negative experience with Tommy. read more

Worst ever experience!! Only best was customer service so I was not even able to say to their face that hair job is horrible!! I went for hair cut and highlights... Wanted rose gold highlights...came with nothing ..no highlights at all!! Even my husband was confused what they did in 3 hours!! Highlights was far from being recognized, He couldn't even tell that I had hair cut!! Can't believe that stylist did haircut after hair colouring/highlights!! I mean who does that!! Haircut should be first and then highlights ... It saves lot of time and effort .. But I guess no common sense there!! It took 3.5 hours for highlights and cut without even proper blow drying!! After 3 hours, I had to ask him to hurry up and do blow dry as quick as possible !! Wish I can post photo of before and after!! I just had the best salon experience of my life. I need to give a bit of backstory, which I swear will have a point: I went to the same stylist, Danielle, for 6 years. She was amazing. Then she moved to Toronto, and since then I've been bouncing around between salons. She moved about two years ago and I haven't seen the same stylist more than once since then. Nothing has clicked, y'know? So although Dani and I became super BFFs over time and she eventually found out all of my deepest darkest secrets, I don't feel super comfortable baring my soul and boy troubles (kidding!) to a stylist on our first meet. So I just end up sitting there awkwardly talking about my cat, mostly. Ponytails and Horseshoes had good reviews on Yelp and their prices seemed a bit lower than some other salons around town, so I booked. The first good sign: online booking. I love that! On a whim, I booked with Curtis. I had never booked with a male stylist before but I thought, what's the worst that can happen? Summary of Curt: tall, hilarious, full of stories, makes his clients feel totally at ease, and fantastic at doing hair. I think he sensed I was a bit nervous so he didn't push me to tell him all my latest gossip. Instead, he filled any conversational voids with funny tales of his friends and relationships. It's a very fun salon and it has a great energy. The staff all seem like they are having a great day and really want to be there. Best of all, my hair looks fab! (I swore I'd never go blonde again, but Curt has almost convinced me never to go back to brunette! It looks so good!) I've found my new salon and my new stylist! FINALLY! read more

I had my hair cut and styled by Curtis. I should have just got up from the chair and left when he pulled out the razor clipper and started to shave off the 'baby hair'! I have never had any stylist ever use razor clippers on my hair and for good reason because this action was totally unnecessary! Curtis is a very genteel person and I wish I could give a better rating because he is so personable; however, his skill level needs to be brought up to industry standard. read more

I have not had my hair coloured here yet so am not sure what product line they use for hair colour, but as far as coming in for a shiny, beautiful, cruelty free cut, I feel as though P+H has my back! They also offer $5 bang trims (and I believe that $5 is donated to charity) between cuts, and I just went for one yesterday which will tide me over until September! For women, finding a great hair stylist is like finding the perfect little black dress, or the perfect man... and I've found one of those! Her name is Amy and she's fantastic! Ponytails + Horseshoes is a great salon in the neighbourhood of Garneau. Due to it's proximity to my house, I decided to give it a try. It's small inside but instead of feeling tight, it just makes it feel cozy and unpretentious. The staff are all friendly and Amy is a fantastic stylist. I've been there three times - twice for a full cut, and once for a bang trim - and I will continue to go here until disaster strikes and Amy moves/marries/gets pregnant/changes careers (all the reasons other stylists have abandoned me). Before coming to this salon, I practically had an anxiety attack because I didn't know what to expect and didn't even know what kind of hair I wanted (or how short I wanted to go...). Barb, my stylist, patiently discussed the different options with me and at no point in time pushed me in one direction or another. She explained to me what was wrong with my previous hair cut and showed me what we would have to do to fix it. Once I made up my mind about how short I wanted to go, barb gave me the most relaxing head massage (over a hair wash) and proceeded to do her thing. She had very calm, down-to-earth vibe, and no at all pretentious. I also really appreciated how she blew dry my hair on medium heat instead of blasting it to get the job done faster. The haircut turned out unbelievably great. Exactly what I wanted (but didn't know that I wanted). What's more amazing is that even after the first wash it still looks great. I found Amy, who I booked almost by accident -- I was having a hair day with my sis and we wanted a time where we could get our hair cut simultaneously -- and Amy and Curtis were the only ones available at a specific day. My sis chose Curtis, and I chose Amy, not knowing she was one of the owners of this fabulous salon. Anyway, Amy was the first stylist I actually felt like I had a genuine conversation with as opposed to struggling to find a topic. Maybe it's because we shared a kindred spirit in terms of both running our own business, a business we are passionate about. She seemed to "get" my lamentations, and at the same time, she was SO full of energy -- so happy but not in an annoying way, haha -- and then she gave great advice on how to do my hair and what hair would look as flattering on me as possible. I left the salon with a great head of hair that looked fabulous the next day, and then when it was time for my sister's wedding a few days later, I was able to style it to look fab, too! The gracious and always friendly & attentive staff & the bright, modern decor are second to none! I especially love that the staff are knowledgeable and ethical about the products they use. I've been going to Ponytails & Horseshoes for about 2 years now and I LOVE THEM! I've been seeing Curtis the entire time and I cannot recommend him enough! He is sweet, easy to talk to and is great at what he does! I tried to go back to my natural hair color about a year ago and I didn't have the best of luck. Curtis stressed over it and help me for weeks until I was happy with it. I always leave happy and relaxed. I recently got married over the Christmas break and Curtis was taking some time off, He told me if I needed anything he would come in for me, or stay late or even come in early. Went back to this salon & certain stylist to get a cut from somewhere else corrected, even though when i was here before too much was cut off, I did like other things even though the length wasnt right. Well my usual happy bubbly stylist was obviously pissed off. Either they were having a very bad day or it was me not seeing them for a few months, pretty sure it was me. I started to explain i was out of town a lot so got cuts elsewhere, & the stylist interrupted me & said "Dont worry about it" & walked away to get a styling tool. In a snotty manner then they asked me what famous person I would want my hair to look like. They were obviously ticked off. If you cant handle that someone didnt like your cuts because YOU didnt listen & cut things wrong, get out of the business..& grow up as well. Being that obviously ticked off is really immature. Last Saturday was my first ever appmt at P&H, and it was great! The atmosphere is friendly and I was served a blueberry tea to help make me feel at home. My stylist was Barb and she was fantastic. I told her that my hair was: colored/processed, a dull dark brown color, had a perm recently, bangs grew out months ago, and my hair was also falling out. Overall I wanted something new! Needless to say, it was a tall order. I showed Barb pictures of what I wanted (needed bangs and was hoping for a red colour) and told Barb that she had leeway on how to cut it, what the final color would be, etc. She listened to my suggestions, concerns, and what my daily hair routine is like. After a 2 hour appmt, she gave me a a great shoulder length copper ombre hair-do. It was different than anything I have ever done - exactly what I wanted. Katherine does such a great job cutting and colouring my hair. Every time I go in, she's happy and lovely and nice. I am terrified for the day she leaves! I've never had a bad colour or cut, and I always leave feeling very good about myself. I appreciate a stylist who remembers me, and she always does. I am very shy and fairly socially awkward, but she seems to know that and never really pushes. It was time to come back to PoHo to experience it all over again. This time I had Kelli as my stylist, who was very nice and friendly and didn't give me that stare I usually get when I tell stylists that I need a hairstyle with very little upkeep. She's basically a sweet heart. My only issue is that, again, my appointment started around 20 minutes late. I forget the name of the woman who washed my hair but the massage I got was to die for! I didn't want to leave that sink! The cut was was more of a clean up and Kelli did a great job, my hair feels a lot healthier. PoHo expanded since I was last there. (I mean it has been two years!) Now, instead of having a small room with maybe 10 chairs, there's two rooms with twice as many. Decor changed a little, but it's still very "hipster" but they rock it. My experience was better than last time. I really appreciate Kelli not pushing products on me when I went up to pay - I can't afford $42 hair spray as a student. I also got another student discount (Thanks Kelli!) an my total was around $70 with tip again. The only reason why I took a star off, was because when I was waiting for the chair to open up I could hear the conversation the receptionists were having and they were basically making fun of a lady who had called in for an appointment. Talking about how crazy she is, and doesn't she know how busy the place is and how she needs to check herself, how she always calls in and tries to get last minute appointments, then cancels and how annoying it is and how they shouldn't even schedule her anymore etc. Things like that were being said and I understand that everyone rants, I just don't think it should have been said in front of customers, at the very least not so blatantly. read more

My search for a pair of TOMS shoes led to me this...hair salon? Random, but I gave it a try. They didn't have a huge selection, but a small choice of (I'm guessing) the most popular colours/styles. I was greeted warmly by Jane, who offered to bring me a couple of sizes to try. She was very patient as I wandered around the front of the shop testing out which size was best, and offered advice as to how much they will stretch as I wear them. Sold! I asked about men's selection, and she told me that they only had a few, and the biggest size was an 11 (my Hubs needs a 13). But then she proceeded to tell us of other places around town that we could check, and then called those places to see if they had the size we were looking for! Jane was friendly and helpful and I will not only go back for shoes, but I just might check out the actual hair services as well. I even noticed a tray of scones and muffins for customers to snack on - this place has everything a girl could hope for! read more

Finding a new stylist after having the same girl cut/color your hair for 3 years is scary... mainly because you usually pay anywhere from $130-$250 to "test" a stylist... But I think I found my new salon. Its very cute, the decor is nice & the staff are friendly. I had my hair colored & cut by Curtis, he was very friendly & had a lot of funny stories to tell. He also seemed to be really passionate about his career. I basically did a full head of blonde highlights, and considering how long I've been box dying my hair dark brown, I am very impressed! My hair turned out exactly like the picture I brought in, and I feel like I left the salon with a new friend! Everything went good, he put the foils in, I sat under the coolest dryer and waited a bit till he washed them out. The he washed it.. honestly I'm surprised you aren't charged extra for the head massage, I felt like I was with my massage therapist for 5 minutes! It was awesome. After that he dried it.. he was a little rough with my tangled hair, but it was fine because I was distracted by his hilarious stories. He cut my hair once it was dry, he took his time and it looks great! I was charged approximately $196.. that was with the student discount. I do find it a bit high, I used to pay $140 for full color... but oh well! I'll pay it if it means I leave with hair I love. :) Thanks Curtis! I'll be back ! read more

First impression GREAT!!! We were offered a beverage upon arriving, as well as a smock to replace our shirt so we didn't get hair on it. NICE TOUCH!!! Well I have to say that I was impressed for the most part. The guy who did my hair was fantastic, he knew what he was doing and was very gentle up until the end.....When he was told his next client was there... (From what I viewed) he started to panic and his gentleness turned a little rough at one point. He actually started to hit the brush to my head when he was blow drying it. (Not Cool) Then that wasn't it he passed me on to someone else to finish up, I didn't like that part at all but what choice did I have. Not to say the wonderful lady who did finsih up wasn't great but he was my stylist and he should of finished, reguardless of a the next appointment. It was my birthday and it should of been great right to the end. I have to say he did care as he was checking up on me and making sure she was doing what he wanted but like I said before he should of finished. The other thing was I was overcharged!! I was told $60 max for a cut for the stylist they scheduled for me and my sister with, $75 for a solid color and $40 for foils which is $175, Where do you get $200???? Was told maybe a little more for my sister because of the blond but with a discount she paid well over me. As for the lady who did my sisters hair NOT IMPRESSED!!!! She shouldn't be a stylist as far as I am concerned. She was rough with her, not a conversationist, and messed up on her color. My sister didn't say anything to me earlier and I wished she would of because I would of said something right there. Well her color is alright as long as it is covered up by her hair once she puts her hair up, OH MY!! She didn't even put the color to the root it is at least an inch away. Not to mention she didn't cover all her brown. Then overcharged a ridiculous amount of money for a STUDENT!!!!! Will be calling the salon to complain as that was totally unacceptable, what a poor experience for her. I have been living in Edmonton all my life and somehow missed this gem! After an excellent recommendation from a friend I tried it and very happy I did! Walking in everyone seems very happy to be working there! Which I think is important. The place is very clean and it has a great atmosphere! I ended up having Morgan. He is probably the sweetest guy in the world! He does a super fabulous job and in fact I've decided to make this my salon of choice!! They also text a reminder which I love! Highly recommend! Oh! Unfortunately, I had two consecutive negative experiences at this salon. During the first one I went for a full colour - I wanted a shade in the dark red/brown family of colour. After the first application of colour, I ended up with essentially black hair with bright red roots (I am a natural ginger). Two more applications of hair dye did not fix this, and I had to come to the salon the following week for correction. Furthermore, I requested my hair to be styled in loose curls for a party I was going to after. I left looking like a poodle, with really stiff and unmoving curls. Overall result: extremely dark, dry, over-processed hair that contrasted very unfortunately with my very pale, winter complexion. Trying to keep a positive attitude, and considering the positive reviews of the salon and the fact that mistakes occasionally happen, I went back to the same stylist for a root touchup. Three applications of hair dye later, approximately two hours in the salon chair, and my roots finally match (albeit, not perfectly) Ugh. Finally, the salon didn't do anything in the way of customer service to compensate for these bad experiences. Unsatisfied customer ....check. read more

I was eager to try a new, funky salon to have my hair coloured in the spring. I am naturally a dirty-blonde and was looking to take it a little darker - but with warmth (not ashy). I made this very clear when I called to book the appointment and the front desk girl assigned me to one of the lead stylists at the salon. Little did I know that it would be her apprentice that would actually be colouring my hair. Although the girl was sweet, I was uneasy right from the start. She listened carefully to my request but had to run everything by her boss, twice, who was on her way out the door. At the end of this appointment my roots were bright red and the rest of my hair was the same colour blonde that I came into the salon with. It was awful! In fact, I never speak up when I should and in this case, I had to tell her. Thankfully, she full out agreed with me that it didn't turn out. What was more frustrating was that when I came back to the front desk from the washroom, the girls wouldn't stop talking about how great it turned out...and that they loved the blonde! I told them it was the same colour I came in with, but now I had red roots! Eventuallly I called to schedule another appointment to have it fixed...and they gave me the same apprentice to fix it! That didn't work either! In the same evening, the lead stylist washed out my foils, then dyed it for a 3rd time in a week (over 7 total hours). I mentioned that it would be fried and she said it likely wouldn't with the products they used. Following this final 'fix' they charged me $150.00!!! Again, I was too worried to say anything at the time...Figured it would fade quickly, but in the end, I was just plain disappointed with the lack of professionalism and leadership throughout this experience. In summary, I had my hair dyed 3 times in 10 days, which still didn't fix the problem and I had fried, red hair for the next two months. My hair, thankfully, is now back to blonde but still dry as dirt. I paid money for something I was never even remotely happy with, and I wanted anyone in my position of searching for a new salon to be aware of this costly and time-consuming mis-hap at Ponytails and Horseshoes. read more

I did highlights and cut. it costed me $200 which i am willing to pay only if the service blow my mind. LIKED: The colour itself until my 1st hair wash at home. His effort to give more colour at the front and gradually blending at the back and top to bottom. DISLIKE : I appreciate his effort for doing highlights in small stripes in between my black hair but it does not stand out like i wanted. They are so thin that it looks like i colored my whole hair dark redish copper unless someone come real close and want to see how my highlights were done. HATED: After 4 days i washed my hair yesterday. THE COLOR WASHED AWAY AFTER 1 WASH. The vibrant redish color isn't there anymore. I wanted some highlights at the back as well. He did not even touch my hair at the back. BOTTOM LINE: IF YOU ARE PICKY LIKE ME OR VALUE YOUR MONEY, THIS PLACE IS NOT FOR U. I felt like I spent $200+ and got the service from mastercut or supercut. I have a fixing appointment this week. I wanted to change the front but I kinda grew into it in a week. Besides i won't take the risk to fix it and fry some more hair. Plan is to put some more color at the back and make my color vibrant redish copper again. I chose this salon after doing much research as I am new to the area. It is a nice salon with friendly staff, but the haircut was not too good. I asked for a stylist that was good with thick hair, and they suggested Elizabeth. She was lovely, but at the end of my cut I had never seen less hair on the floor. She did not dry my hair and told me that the air dry look would be great. Two hours later I looked like a mess and was not pleased. She tried well, but if you have thick hair and are looking for a great cut ponytails and horseshoes is for the birds. read more

I have 3 friends who were all getting their hair cut here when I decided to try them. I called and just booked with whoever was available during the time I was free. This was one of the best choices I have ever made. Barb is the most talented stylist I have ever had, and she is amazing with colour.If I didn't tell you I coloured my hair, you wouldn't even know. From the moment I arrived it was an amazing experience..welcomed with an offer of a beverage and I promptly saw Kelli B for a haircut - she is wonderful - charming, creative and a great listener. She knows so much about products especially Kevin Murphy and Neuma - we had a great conversation about everything including what nasty chemicals are out there in beauty care products. I ended up with some Neuma products - which are great and a perfume oil - Sweetgrass. I wish I lived here - I am visiting from Toronto and googled "best hair salons in Edmonton". I am so glad I chose them - my layered short hair cut is fabulous! Thanks Kelli and everyone at the lovely Ponytails and Horseshoes...next time I'm in Edmonton I'll be sure to book here. I have been coming here since January and I really love my stylist Morgan! He's so kind and gives me great cuts! I have curly hair so it has taken me a while to find a good stylist - I always leave here looking fabulous and my hair still looks good when I do it at home the next day. The prices are very reasonable and they even offer a new discount. They carry kevin Murphy as well as Neuma products which is really a great line that will last you months.
