Edit: the company did follow up with me and offer to fix my hair but due to personal reasons im not going back. Thanks for following up with me though. I am traumatized. Asked for a straight Selma Hayek/ cleopatra inspired long trim. Essentially what I already had, just a trim. Instead I got Edward scissor hands nightmare hair. I won't be getting my hair cut for a long time. Trust gone. i can't stop crying. read more

I've gone here multiple times and I only have amazing things to say! Great service, and amazing stylists! I have seen Mercedes for both a colour and a cut and both have been beautiful!! read more

If you're looking to get your hair cut for somewhere mid-range, the Aveda Academy Salon is the place to go. You get the quality haircut you would get from a good salon, but pay half the price. This is because all their stylists are in training. So if you're only comfortable with high-end professionals doing your hair, this may not be the place for you. That being said, you can always ask for one of their senior students instead. I was pretty happy with my stylist, who was very particular with her work and took care to ask me what I wanted along the way. You also receive complimentary tea and a head massage before they begin cutting your hair. The massage includes one of their hair treatment products, and its soothing scent instantly relaxes you. That's not something you often get from a normal salon, is it? The Aveda Academy Salon offers all hairstyling services, from basic cuts to colouring. If you go, be sure to make an appointment, as they don't accept walk-ins. read more

Aveda Avenue Salons - Hair Salons Near Me - Edmonton, Alberta

I really don't want to write this review. I reached out to the stylist privately, but the issue was not resolved. Let me start out by saying that I did a few things wrong on my end. I asked the person that called to confirm my appt what the ballpark amount was for a haircut and all over colour. She said $115, so I was expecting maybe $150 before tip max. The stylist informed me that my total was going to be $194 and I should have asked for an itemized receipt right then and there. I have issues with social interaction and being confrontational, but that is my problem - not theirs. I asked for an itemized receipt while my hair was processing and saw that I was being charged $45 for them to fill my blonde highlights. I had blonde in the front and two chunky highlights on the top layer of my hair. The $45 was a result of them taking 53% off of a full all over colour. On top of that, I was being charged $30 for extra product. I spoke to the stylist and said that didn't seem fair as the blonde they had to cover was much less than 1/2 a head. She doubled down and then when a manager was brought over, they ended up taking $20 off. I arrived at the salon at 1pm for my 1:15pm appt, and I did not leave until 4:50pm. I told her at about 3:30pm that I needed to leave to get to work by 5pm. Once it got to 4:40 and I was not done, I asked if I could just blow dry my hair myself and pay and leave. I ended up putting my damp hair in a Toque and walking 3 blocks to work. She had completed the cut and colour, but I did not have time for a blow dry. I was also extremely uncomfortable after I had to "complain" about the price. I also had to tell the stylist that I didn't like small talk and would just prefer to read my book because she kept asking me about Christmas, which is a hard time for me, and then when I answered one word answers, she asked me the same exact question about Christmas plans later. I am socially awkward and have a very hard time sitting down for long periods of time. I did not think that a bob haircut and all over brown colour on hair that was already mostly brown would take 4 hours. While she was washing my colour out, I had to keep myself from crying. It was just such an embarrassing situation. I wanted to treat myself to a nice salon experience, but I honestly just shouldn't have. Since I left with damp hair, I didn't see the final result until I was at work. The haircut is extremely uneven in the front and my blonde highlights that I paid extra for them to fill are still noticeable. I messaged the stylist on instagram to ask how to fix the situation, and she told me that she would fix it if I paid $10 for product. Absolutely not. I explained why I didn't think that was reasonable, and she told me to have a nice day. I tipped her $40 on my $180 service as the whole interaction was probably uncomfortable for her as a newer stylist - but I really shouldn't have. Just an overall bad experience through and through. I will stay away from salons for a while but I would urge you to not go to this one - especially if you're neurodivergent like I am. read more

I've gone three times and will not be returning. First time was to get my hair curled. It was basically flat and straight by the time I left the salon. The second time was for a haircut and my layers were not even. Third time was for a colour and I only went because I had a gift card. Colour did not turn out the way I wanted and I had even provided a picture so the stylist could see exactly what I wanted. The blow dry was also terrible. She told me it would be $25 for a round brush blow dry (free at any other salon I've been to), or free for a "natural" blow dry. The free option consisted of her using no brush and running her fingers through my hair while blow drying. Looks awful and was painful. Would not recommend. read more

Whyte location. I wanted a cool toned hair colour...got an orangey brown. Didn't want highlights but she said it would be better for dimension so I said okay as long as it cool toned....orangey toned as well. Wanted a hair cut as a slightly inverted medium bob. she took like a massive chunk out of the front where it's 3 inches shorter than the rest of my hair for a massive section of it. I hate hate hate hate hate my hair and I have dealt with some pretty bad hair experiences. However for the claimed "senior stylist" and cost (almost dropped dead when I went to pay) of this, I would never recommend this place to anyone. Straight garbage. I didn't say anything after the Appointment because what's the point? the damage is done and im not going to go back to the same place that screwed it up that badly. Do not recommend read more

Before moving to Edmonton I had been seeing the same stylist for years so I was apprehensive about having to find someone new. I decided to check out Aveda after reading reviews on here (and the fact that it's walking distance from my apartment doesn't hurt either!) The first time I went here to see Ashley I was really impressed with her. She was helpful, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. She made me feel extremely comfortable. I also liked that she asked for another stylist's opinion on what shade she should use to touch-up my roots. Most people would just guess for themselves but I really appreciated that she went out of her way to make sure things went well. I went for another appointment the other day, again for a root touch-up and a trim. Unfortunately my hair had faded significantly so when she used my normal colour on my roots, it was much more vibrant than the rest of my hair and didn't match at all. My big thing with any customer service experience is that anyone can make a mistake. The real place that I judge is how they rectify it. When it came to my messed-up roots, Ashley fixed things right away. Since I was okay with the root colour, she decided the best course of action would be to add a light toner to the rest of my hair (free of charge of course). Now that I've had a few days to get used to it and had a chance to style it for myself, it looks fantastic! I'm completely satisfied with how everything turned out, and I would definitely return. read more

I went to the Aveda Academy Salon for a haircut the other night after a friend suggested it might be a good place to try (as I recently moved to the city). I've been to several Aveda salons in both Canada and the US before and have always had a good experience. My appointment was with an instructor, not a student, and she was very good. She really gave the cut a lot of thought and did exactly what I asked. I liked that they add small touches like a scalp massage before-hand. She also explained all the products she was using as she used them - which no hair stylist has done for me before and I appreciated. The only downside was that she flat ironed my hair and I would have preferred a natural blow dry - but that's minor as it's only for a day or two. When she was done she applied some loose powder to my face and some nice lip gloss. She offered to explain more about the other products they had, but didn't push. Overall I was very happy with my experience and will definitely go back. read more

I came here to get my hair and makeup done before my wedding. I'm pretty low maintenance and the day was really laid back, so I hadn't put much thought into hair and makeup. I told the woman doing my hair, I wanted to look "like a sixties movie star" and the woman doing my hair that I wanted "loose waves that still looked fancy". They both seemed quite anxious, with no direction and it being a few hours before my wedding. In any case, they managed to work their magic and make me feel beeeautiful! They were quick, awesome to chat with and open to touching things up when I asked them to. In addition, it all cost $90. Three cheers for low budget weddings and awesome stylists! read more

I haven't been to the salon here, but I have bought products from here. I really love shopping for Aveda products. If I had all the money in the world, I would still buy Aveda. I see it as a treat, because it is more expensive and better quality than drugstore brands. The greatest thing about this store is that they sell travel sizes of a lot of their products. I can't afford the big bottles of "shampure" so I buy mini versions of my favorite stuff. I am always offered tea when I walk into the store and everything in the store feels so calm and relaxing. I will continue to come back again and again to buy products. read more

I was first introduced to the Aveda Salon experience when I lived in Vancouver, over a decade I am still hooked to this place. When I moved to Edmonton I decided to try the Aveda Academy Salon and I was absolutely thrilled with this place. The staff were attentive and friendly and made sure I had the best experience possible. My appointment was for a cut and I appreciated how the stylist listed to my wishes and the results exceeded my expectations. I have since been back for colour which turned out so vibrant. I try to be an informed and environmentally conscious consumer when it comes to purchases; and I appreciate Aveda's approach to eco-friendly products. read more

I'm a fan in a big way! I love my stylist Melanie. She is friendly, always upbeat and always does a great job. She is a good listener and will always look to cover my best interest when it comes to my hair. I am always pleased with the result. The salon gets 4 stars because the staff always make it difficult for me to get in to get my fringe(bangs) trimmed. It takes 5 minutes to trim someone's fringe. Please work on making time for your regular's. I am one scary lady when I pull out the scissors to cut my fringe when I can no longer wait. I'll be honest, I can pretend to be a stylist on the day I cut my fringe but it never looks right. It serves the purpose temporarily but I would prefer to get some love from my favourite salon and leave it the pros. read more

I returned to Aveda for a trim, although I had hoped to have one after my stylist gave me a spot spiral perm the week prior. I had wanted only a spot perm because my hair had had a regular perm at MC College only last September in 2011, so I didn't feel the need to have the main length re-permed again, and thought that the spot perm would match what I already had. My stylist took ALL the careful precautions and chose of course not to re-perm the length, due to a high chance of breakage she told me, and I didn't want an all over perm, spiral or not, anyway. However, whatever product she used on my hair cause the prior perm to be completely stripped out, and I walked out of the salon wondering why the length was almost straight! It was like I had a relaxer put on my hair. To this day, both my stylist and I don't know what went wrong, and while having my trim, she told me that they had even called Aveda Institute (their main office) to tell them of the incident with me. They had never had an incident like that happen at their location, so it's a real mystery why that even happened. I don't feel she was incompetent. Anyway, because of it, my haircut/trim I had (just on the ends) was FREE of charge. However, she felt it was too risky to perm the length, and told me to come in and see her in a month or two. So in the meantime, I've actually been using a flat iron and products to achieve straight hair, because it's still out of balance. Nobody goes out with half permed and half near-straight hair! OR I'll use my curling iron for awhile to change it as I like. And when I posted photos of me (pre-trim) on Facebook, I had all positive comments anyway about my 'fake straight' look. : ) My hair is baby fine, with a natural wave to it. But I DID have it chemically straightened about 4 years ago to make my hair much more mangeable and less tangly, so maybe it has something to do with why their product removed the first perm I had? I dont know. I saw that the price for a haircut there would have cost me $45 dollars, so because of the mistake she inadvertently made on my hair, removing the prior perm I had, I thought that this was a gracious thing for her to do by not charging me for the cut. Their products I find are pricey though. But I will return when I want another perm to match the spot spiral perm I had. I still think I'm best suited for curly hair and I'm not sour on my experience(s) with Aveda. read more

I had a great experience today. I was greeted and introduced straight ahead to who was going to cut my hair. As they are all students, a teacher/supervisor is always around giving them a hand and supervising how they proceed. It was so nice to get a short 'stress-massage' and also a shampoo massage afterwards. Gets you good to go! The haircut in itself was good, I am pretty happy with it, and will definitively come back again next time. Great value for the money and extremely friendly service - highly recommended! read more

A cute little stop for makeup and hair. It has great service - really friendly staff. I have never had my hair done there so I am unsure on the outcome for that, but my friends get their hair done there and it always is great. Pretty knowledgable on hair styling, products, and makeup. I have a really hard time dealing with scents so the smell of the places makes it hard for me stay too long. read more

I have been looking for a good place to cut my hair since I moved back to Edmonton a few years ago. I tried out a few places (most of them through groupon - BAD idea), and I have been so scarred I would go years without a cut in fear of being left with a mop on my head. I don't understand how a stylist could cut someone's hair without any regard for the style requested. And yes, I used a groupon, but isn't the whole point of groupon to acquire more clients? Not scare them away? Anyway, I was referred to Aveda by a good friend and as soon as I walked in, I felt like I was at a real salon. They greeted me, sat me down, I filled out a form, and the stylist was prompt and so friendly. We had a chat about what I wanted and what my concerns were and I could see that she really understood what I was looking for. And then I got a free head and shoulder massage! Best ever! I really like how they took the time to explain everything that was going on. I was never left anywhere for no reason and if a product was used, there was an explanation of what it was and what it did. My hair cut was great, I felt great coming out of there. I actually wanted to show off my hair this time. I will be going back there from now on and I recommend it to anyone! I've finally found my salon. read more

I've only been here twice, first time for a cut and second time for colour, and both times I had a great experience! The facility is quite nice, all of the staff are very warm and welcoming. I was greeted immediately at the door, offered water or tea (which is really good) and led into the salon where they hung up my coat and gave me a robe to put on. I had Kelsey for both appointments and she did a fabulous job! For the colour I got balayage highlights done. She answered all of my questions, offered a few suggestions but in the end did exactly what I wanted. A little bit on the pricier side (since she was a senior stylist) but definitely worth it! Overall very sweet, professional, and I'll definitely be coming back and asking for her. Highly recommend! read more

So when I called to book, I booked for Saturday @ 1 pm. I booked a student, and was told the rate was $36 or $38. I was told that I should expect a call 48 hours before my appointment to verify. A week later, I was called on Wednesday by Aveda's automated voice messaging system, verifying my appointment on Friday @ 1 pm. I had to call, and the receptionist kindly moved the time over to Saturday as originally discussed. I'm going to go ahead and admit this was my first haircut in 7 or 8 years. After some traumatic experiences with haircuts gone terribly wrong ("trims" on my hair that was down to my mid-back being cut up to my jaw, cuts that ended up crooked at best, etc.), I really put it off as long as possible. But with hair that was past my waist and getting way too thin and frazzled, it was time for it to go. Rather than the only Chinatown cuts that I was raised getting, I decided to try something a little nicer as a treat to myself, especially considering it's been such a long time since I was last at a hair salon. Rather than traumatize myself with another horrible experience, I wanted it done right. Walking into Aveda Academy Salon, it looks upscale. It's clean, modern, and has a very light atmosphere. They have you put on a black robe instead of throwing one of those horrid sheets over you. I was offered a refreshment (they offered water or tea), but I politely declined since I already had a drink with me. Sarah was my hairdresser. She asked me to first tell her about my hair, and then asked what I'd like done. I said I wanted to cut off 4-6 inches, and keep the same V-cut at the bottom like my previous haircut. She used a flat-iron to straighten my hair (which is quite wavy), went ahead and chopped off about 4 inches of frizzy hair, and then took me over for a wash. I expected there to be an extra charge for the wash, however, and I had just washed my hair a few hours ago, so I declined. She was very nice, and once she realized I wasn't the most talkative person she went to work on my hair without talking too much, which I actually really liked! I was there about an hour, I liked that there was no rush. The finished product was great, my hair felt light and thick just like I remembered it being ages ago. The only issue was the height made my cringe a little. My cut of 4" - 6" somehow turned into more like 12"! But, I figured she did that as a way of getting rid of all of the damaged hair so that my hair would be healthy as it grew again. She offered to also style it for me (even curl it, which I think I will go with next time!). She put a bit of body in it so it wasn't stick-straight, and then we were done! Sarah asked if I wanted to pick up any products that day, by I declined, and she didn't force the issue, which I appreciated. Before passing me off to the receptionist, she told me if I were to come back every 6 to 8 weeks for a touch up, it would help my hair grow in faster, but that it would grow in much healthier than leaving it for years again. My only surprise was the price. The receptionist told me the total was $42 + tip. I mentioned that I was told a different price over the phone. And she made a funny face and said, "I don't know what to tell you. It's $42." Her reaction was rude, and I didn't care for that at all. It wasn't a huge discrepancy, but since it wasn't what I had been told, I was simply asking. However, Sarah was great, so I left (what I hope was) a decent tip. I think I will go back, but I'll cross my fingers and hope the receptionist isn't there next time! If not for the receptionist, I'd be giving 5 stars! read more

When I lived in Chicago (and was always broke) I had numerous fabulous haircuts at the Aveda Institute there. As an Aveda fan, I looked for Aveda salons, knowing the brand was one I could trust. That changed when I moved to Canada. I have had the two worst haircuts of my life at the Aveda Institute Edmonton - and these were by graduates, not students!!! From the way the stylists attempted to hide their mistakes (which included uneven length on the sides and a terrible, gaping "hole" in the style), it was obvious that they knew they had done poorly but hoped for me to get out of the salon before noticing. I had the first terrible haircut the day before flying to London to attend a friend's wedding. I had to wear hats and scarves the whole three-week trip because the haircut was so hideous. When I got back to Canada and asked for a redo, I was told that too much time had passed for a free re-do, however, if I came back, I could have a different "senior stylist" cut my hair for a reduced rate. The second cut was only slightly better (no gaping holes, but not even on the sides). The non-Aveda stylist who fixed my hair after that cut took two and a half hours to give me a style I could live with (my hair is thin, fine, and chin-length), though it has taken two cuts to get my style back to anything resembling a decent cut. The damage was that bad. I will now avoid every single Aveda salon in Edmonton. If the Academy graduated those two "stylists" and trust them to work in their Academy Salon, I can put absolutely no faith in the Aveda brand in this city. By the way, the fabulous cuts I received at the Institute in Chicago cost me $14 a cut as opposed to the $45 I paid for each of the horrendous cuts here in Edmonton. The prices here are outrageous for an academy salon. Even more outrageous for bad cuts. read more

I find this place a little hit and miss, until you've found a good stylist to stick with. I lucked out my first time there and paid a good price for my regular haircuts for awhile. Then my stylist just kind of vanished, and I tried someone else and it just wasn't worth it. She kept pushing a bunch of products, even though I had said repeatedly that I will not spend more than 5 minutes on my hair, and when she was done my hair looked worse than when I do nothing with it. The manager was really good and offered to redo my hair for me (although I didn't take her up on it). But otherwise, I always enjoyed going to Aveda, although I go elsewhere now. read more

I keep coming back here becasue of the low prices (which have gone up a ton since a few years ago), but on my last visit in winter 2013 I got a basic color glossing to shine up my hair a bit. Well the girl did a good job (you can't really screw up the clear gloss treatment thankfully) but I asked that she flat iron my hair (my hair is naturally curly and I wanted to leave with ity styled differently), which the girl did, but she NEVER said anything about there being a charge associated with this (other salons I go to do not charge for this). I ended up with $25 added to my bill (at an academy I would expect that if there was a charge for this, that it be much less than $25), I was so upset on the inside, but never said anything because I should have really asked her. If you go here, make sure you ask about prices before you get anything "extra" done. read more

If you want a stylin' haircut but don't want to pay designer prices, Aveda Academy's a great place to go. It's a salon and it's a training school. There are salon prices, but if you want a discount you can book with their stylists-in-training. They do the work and before you walk outta there it's checked by a senior stylist, and any mistakes are corrected. You save a good $20 going this route, and the truth is, they already know what they're doing, they're just getting practice. The likelihood of them cutting off your ear is nil, but any glaring mistakes, especially if you pointed them out, would be corrected. Aveda has quality products as well, and you get spa treatment with a neck and scalp massage with soothing oils after your consult. Make an appointment though. That way you can find out a bit more about the trainees and pick from them, based on experience and recommendation. read more

I love Aveda, and I have been to the Salon and Academy in several different cities and am generally quite pleased with the service rendered, however someone needs to have a talk with one of the reception girls at this location. I walked in and went straight to the cosmetics section, yes, it was close to closing time but the shop was obviously not closed yet. I was greeted, etc, asked what I wanted, and without even looking at the selection of cosmetics the receptionist told me "no sorry we don't have anything like that" - I know that they do, as I've purchased the colour there before, however I was so put off by her answer and lack of customer service that I just left. Not worth my money, I'll be going to the WEM location for any product purchases from here on out. read more

I've been back for three haircuts since my first in November 2011, and I'm still as pleased with Aveda Academy as the first time. She said she definitely wants to come back again and to make sure that she get's Tara as well. Friendly service, welcoming atmosphere, and, most importantly, a GREAT haircut! Only $35 for a cut and style by a student, (only $10 more for a pro) and they throw in a complimentary hot towel treatment. I'm totally, 100% happy and looking smokin'! You must make an appointment, and leave a credit card number to hold it. Great experience. Looking for a new place to get my haircut so I went in to get a French trim to test it out. Easy booking process, and I received a reminder before my appointment. I will definitely go back again for a full cut and color. read more

The salon is spacious, clean and the stylists there did a great job on my daughter's and sister's haircut and my fringe trim. I feel we got excellent value considering that salon haircuts can be ridiculously priced. This is actually not a school --the stylists are experienced. Sweet touch to have the aromatherapy shoulder massage and of course scalp massage! Aveda products are becoming my fav. The only downside is parking in the busy Whyte Avenue area. I didn't see the No Parking sign and had to add $75 to my visit. Be warned - read the signs! read more

I think overall Aveda is ok. It's nothing spectacular or above board. I mean you can tell that the employees are pushed to upsell - everything - push, push, push Aveda products. The hair washing stations have ridiculous "chairs".. uncomfortable and awkward to get in and out of. The esthetic could use an overhaul, its been the same since.. forever. The worst part of their regiment in my opinion is the fact that you have to pay extra, about $25, to have your hair styled. I think this is over the top considering most salons include that in their prices. So you pay extra, and what do you get? Each and every time they put a very junior employee to the task. And consistently do not dry your hair completely before they begin to curl or straighten etc. Rush, rush, rush...! The result. Damp hair underneath, dry on top. Guess how long the style stays.. styled..? Not very long. I don't understand why the crazy rush when you're paying more. I think their location gives them an attitude of "more". But their overall quality of product and service don't warrant the attitude. On the bright side? There are a few senior stylists that really know their craft and are amazing colorists and give a great cut. They need to do something about the junior staff. And dry the hair!!! read more

Take your money elsewhere. I recently went to the salon to have my hair "styled" and not just cut. After provide the stylist with a full description of my lifestlye and that fact that I wanted a low/no maintanence hair cut I ended up with a high maintenance uneven mess and had to go back for a "re-do". I have no problem with a style that may not look great on me but is a good cut. But this was neither, bad cut and it doesn't look good on me. As a grown woman I don't cry over a bad hair cut, but I was so close with this one as I haven't had a cut this bad for a long time. When I can asked about the experience of the stylist they indicated that she had graduated and was there taking additional training for coloring of hair. Either they mislead me about her experience or they inadequately train the students before they graduate. Don't make the same mistake I did. Go elsewhere. read more

I only get my hair cut about once or twice a year so I decided to splurge. When I walked into Aveda I greeted at the door immediately and they waited on my hand and foot until walked back out the door. Their costumer service is almost a bit much, like after I say no to coffee and tea the first time please don't ask me 3 more times if I want it. My hairdresser, Tina, was excellent! I came in with really long hair and wanted to get it chopped off into a long bob. She cut it exactly the way I imagined. The only complaint I would have is that the product pushing at the end made me feel uncomfortable and the service was a bit too friendly. Overall it was great experience and I'd definitely go back! read more

I have been going to Paula there for a couple of years and she is FABULOUS. I have red hair which can be tricky to coliur but she always does a great job. She is honest if she thinks something is not right for you. I highly recommend her, and the rest of the staff there is always friendly also. Overall a lovely experience. read more

My haircut and colour turned out okay - nothing bad nothing great. I found the stylist to be fairly unhelpful, as my questions were often answered with "you know your hair the best". My colour is a bit blah, it doesn't have the umph I was hoping for. The actual salon appeared a tad messy and the robes were covered in other people's hair (despite being washed). Not something I have ever experienced at an Aveda salon before. I think it's time for a replacement..... As for price, I was quoted around $135 and my cut and colour ended up being $203 (before tip)!!! Again, for that price I would have expected a bit more pazaz, not left feeling, meh. I will probably not go back. read more
