Went here for the first time today after seeing the store's page on Instagram. All the staff were super friendly and the salon had a great atmosphere. Lindsay cut my hair and I can honestly say that it was one of the best haircuts I've had In a long time. She was extremely nice, she made sure to walk me through each step and how it will help me achieve my desired hair cut. Talking me through each step made me confident that I was getting exactly what I wanted and that I did! Extremely pleased with what I ended up with. Very cute and trendy salon. 10/10 for the atmosphere. My stylist did a decent job taking my hair from faded cherry red to a decent blonde colour. What I didn't like was the shocking price tag ... over $300. I had made it clear I'm a university student and I understood that in order to get from red to blonde there would be multiple sessions. Still ended up with an incredibly pricy end point. Also had difficulty finding parking before coming and didn't realize it was in a loft business space and I had to find my way up. The staff in general was friendly. Grace, a lovely young artist, cut my hair just as I wanted, willingly making tweaks and accommodating my preference to go the less is more route...just wet my hair and let it dry naturally as it was being cut and left it at that. After dear Dani, my beloved hair stylist of six years, left for Toronto to pursue bigger dreams, I was left without my most trusted beauty weapon. What was a girl to do? I turned to Yelp, of course! I tried one salon (great colour, but she cut it shorter than I asked for), then another (the worst bang trim of my life), then decided to go to the Beauty Parlour. My first impression was that this place was goooorgeous. The salon reminded me a bit of Urban Outfitters or Anthropologie with its wooden floors and many mismatched pillows. It was warm, cozy, and quirky. My favourite part is the giant windows that overlook Whyte Ave. Kat coloured my hair and did an amazing job. She listened to exactly what I wanted (darker!) and it turned out beautifully. Kristin gave me a great cut without removing any significant length, plus she fixed the bang massacure of May 2011. Both Kat and Kristin were really friendly and seemed excited to be working there. It was probably the best salon experience of my entire life! I've been looking for a salon to call home for a while and after reading the reviews on Yelp, I decided to give this a try. I've been wanting this very specific ash colour for my hair and have had 3 failed attempts resulting in fried, damaged hair. As I started to give up on the dream hair, I gave Beauty Parlour a call and thought this will be my last attempt. Had a consultation with Kat, she is very knowledgable and she knows her stuff! I left the consultation feeling very confident in their ability. Plus, the salon is GORGEOUS! It's a beautiful space and I love the shabby chic decor with so much personality. As the cherry on top, they are environmentally conscious and only use products that support this vision. I had to wait one month to get in, they are booked well in advance. Finally, my appointment day came and I am completely in love with the result. Kat totally nailed it, all in one shot! I have a bit of a love hate thing going on with this place, I do love what they did with my hair and the overall ambiance of the place is next to none in the city. But I do have a massive issue with their prices, they are ludicrously expensive. Which I guess makes sense when you take a look at the place but t was still a major shock to the wallet to walk out almost $500 lighter for something that typically costs around $250 in the city. read more

I can't believe I've never written a review for this wonderful salon. I've been seeing Nina for hair cuts since 2015. She is sweet, meticulous and friendly! I am very particular about my hair and she has done amazing job cutting it when it was short and long. Nina also did my wedding hair and did an AMAZING job. She even offered to come in before the opening time to make sure we had enough time. The salon itself is beautiful and welcoming. When I first moved to Edmonton I was looking for a rockstar that could tame my Brad Pitt-esque luscious locks. An envious job, no doubt, that Alisha rode to YEG hair styling glory. Alisha gives the best scalp massage, can decode my incoherent directions into pure ferndangle (that's an award winning haircut kids), and bonus, she totally looks like Heather Graham. She's the bomb (Alisha that is....although Heather is pretty cool too). The decor and vibe definitely lean toward the feminine side but the whole place is chockers with cool peeps. They'll hook you up with a 5 star latte while you wait and you'll get a front row view of the action on Whyte. You used to be able to get a beer with your hair cut (you can't come back to the other side once you're experienced that btw) until someone complained that it was inappropriate because they had brought along their little ankle bitter, demon child (note: ankle biting not confirmed). I have been going to the Beauty Parlour for a few years now. Lately the quality of effort has changed (hot roots, no toner blending) and the prices have just recently skyrocketed. Apparently this was to be 'equitable', however, now they charge for the product used, the cut, the colouring service, the blow dry, and a recycling fee. I just can't do it anymore. Due to the massively good Yelp reviews and also recommendations from friends that aren't on Yelp, my sister and I decided to go to the Beauty Parlour to get our locks lopped off. For me, it was about time, as my overly long hair had become unmanageable and relegated to a pony-tail status on a regular basis. It's a little hard to find because they are situated on the second floor above a Vespa dealership. Kind of like Harry Potter's 1/2 station, you just magically find a door smooshed between businesses. However, just like magic, you open the door and the concrete behind you melts away to reveal a warm, wooden staircase. I call the interior design "grandma chic" -- kinda like visiting a really really stylish old lady's house with antique detailing, wood, and flowers. Very cool and inviting! Seating area is also very stylish, and reminded me more of a restaurant lounge area rather than just a seating area to wait for your stylist. I had Stephanie, who I essentially gave vague instructions about wanting the majority of my length cut off, and that I was thinking of side bangs, maybe layers. Somehow, despite the vagueness of that, Stephanie was able to expertly shape my hair into something super stylish! Another thing I LOVED was the fact that she suggested a new part for my hair -- normally, other stylists just kind of use my natural part or if they ask about it, I shrug (I'm not an expert) and then they don't assert their opinion. When my shrug eventually came, instead of cowing, Stephanie made a part where she thought would be attractive and suggested it to me -- which was the right choice! It looks so much better with my bangs there! I also have to say, I was super super impressed with how she blended my layers. They also have a complimentary 15 minute touch up to your bangs/hair edges 3-4 weeks after your hair cut to help fix anything or just touch it up! Awesome. I will be back AND recommending the Beauty Parlour to many more soon. read more

Last Friday was my second time going to the Beauty Parlour, this time I saw Dean. I was going in for a color and a trim, I had gotten my hair dyed brown last time I went and wanted to opt for something closer to my natural color - a red/auburn color. I brought in some photos and he pointed out the ones he thought would work out. I ended up with a red that was darker and not very similar to the photo I brought in - not that I minded, it still looked nice so I didn't say anything, and I really do like it, even if it is different from what I expected. His advice and expertise was very much appreciated, he seems to really know his hair! Then came the trim/style, which is basic, there really was barely any hair on the ground, but he was chatty and friendly, it was an enjoyable cut. My complaint is that when I got to the till my total with a tip was about $210, quite the sticker shock since last time I came it cost me significantly less for a full cut and color. The receptionist let me know that Dean's cuts are 80$, I paid up, but honestly, 80$ for a trim is absolutely ridiculous, ESPECIALLY considering he barely took anything off and that there were STILL plenty of split ends that I had to clean up myself when I got home. I can appreciate the fact that he may be a senior stylist but I don't care who you are, 80$ for a barely-there-trim is insane. All in all I will probably come back to see Kaylee, she was super nice and her services are a reasonable price. If you are going to visit this salon and are seeing a different stylist than your usual, double check the price, I sure would have liked the heads-up before my cut, otherwise I wouldn'tve gotten it done, it was NOT worth the price! read more

I have had horrible haircuts and hair colours from salons my whole life. As a result for many years I have coloured my hair myself and had my husband cut my hair straight off across the back. I did an excellent job on my colouring, but I just had a long, lifeless hair style. I am also very picky and expect great things from a stylist or colourist if I'm going to drop some cash. Then I read the reviews of The Beauty Parlour on Yelp and that was when my life started to change. I booked a consultation with Kat to get my hair lightened. This is a great service The Beauty Parlour does for people wanting a price quote on hair colour. The receptionist was super friendly and knowledgeable. I went to the appointment not just to get a price quote but also to see if Kat was someone who knew her stuff and shared the same vision of what I wanted to do with my hair. Upon entering the building, there are black and white mug shots of the stylists on the hallway wall. Then I went up some stairs and opened the door to be greeted by a very majestic large dog. I found out that the dog is named Benito and greets everyone who visits the salon. What a sweetheart! The salon is full of natural light, has vintage furniture and decorations, and rough large planked rustic hardwood. I just wanted to hang out there forever! I met Kat who is a very friendly, energetic gal who seems to love what she does. She totally understood what I wanted for my colour, as I showed her photos of Christina Hendricks. She wanted to keep the photos to think about what she will do. I found everything to be great so I booked the appointment for a week and a half later - May 18th. Because Kat only does colouring, she suggested Dean for me for my haircut. So on May 18th, this very nervous gal went to get her hair coloured and cut. Benito the dog wasn't there as Saturday is his day off. I was hoping he would be as he'd help me calm down, but Kat totally had me at ease the whole time. Plus the salon itself is so darn relaxing on its own! Kat spent almost 3 hours with me making sure everything was wonderful. First she lightened my hair, then coloured the roots, then put colour though the rest of my hair, then some sun-kissed highlights. I even got a tasty lemon cupcake to much on while I waited. Then it was Dean's turn to cut and style my hair. We discussed bangs and he was very knowledgeable on what would work with my hair type and look good on me. He parted my hair a different way which I really love. He styled my hair and then we both though something was not right. So he shaped my bangs more and my cut was awesome! Once my hair was dry I could see the colour and it is freaking awesome!!! I almost cried tears of relief at how spectacular everything turned out. Needless to say, this is my go to hair spot from now on. And to anyone reading this and scared of getting your hair cut or coloured, don't hesitate! Make an appointment with Kat and/or Dean today. The decor: all reclaimed and refurbished, old grain elevator is the beautiful floor, vintage chairs and the most amazing mirrors that are so well complemented by the HUGE windows looking onto Whyte Ave. The Products: Kevin Murphy is their main line... which for this curly haired lady works so well. Smells great and is an eco friend company. Stylists: I have had my hair cut or coloured by every single lady there. And all I can say is TALENTED. They each cut a bit different (their individual cutting style) I even once let them cut and colour my hair without telling me what they were going to do and i kept my eyes closed. (i'm sure thats not for everyone, but it was fun) Bonus: The hair cuts are great, you get a wonderful drink and you also get a CLEAN UP, this is a mini (15 min) tidy up, Great for those with short short hair or thick curls its like a mini hair cut a couple weeks after. My friend came in for her cut/color, she already had darker hair and she wanted it to match her natural hair since her last color was lighter. I am writing this review for my friend because she does not have yelp! The overall services were great, they are customer focused and very kind along with being welcoming. However, it is waaaay too over priced for a haircut/color, normally an appointment like this costs $80-120, but when she finished her appointment the total came up to $320. Which is outrageous, if you have the money to spend... go for it... but if you don't proceed at your own risk! Also, to get your colored they charge you at $100 per hour, as well as a recycling fee and a covid fee, so the bill added up real fast. She will not be going back and taking her business elsewhere! read more

I won't trust anyone else but Dean with my hair...although every artist in there is fantastic. I use the word artist because I feel they treat their clients like they are a canvas to be proud of. The salon is wonderfully comfortable and they make amazing lattes. They listen carefully to what you want and help make your ideas a reality...and I appreciate their honesty when it won't work the way I want it (stupid magazine articles and photoshop). This place is so unique. It has a 1920s-esqe feel when you're in there. There's a big, friendly dog running around. And there's sofas and pillows everywhere. It seems like a really close knit group and you feel like part of that group as soon as you walk in. My hair was highlighted and cut for a very reasonable price and she put a lot of time into it! Since I moved to Edmonton last year, I've been to several salons and just haven't found the right one! After reading reviews on Yelp, and since it's in my neighborhood, I decided to book an appointment! My hair is very coarse, frizzy, and really thick. I generally dye it once or twice a year, and try to change things up. After some bad experiences I kind of stopped getting it done because it was so fried, I seriously had given up until coming here! I had a consultation (free of charge) with Kaley, she is very knowledgeable, friendly, and super considerate. I left the consultation feeling very confident in her ability and really excited to get my hair done. Honestly, I've been back several times since, because she has done WONDERS to my hair! I find myself running my fingers through it and honestly wondering who's hair is on my head! (lol) She knows her product well, and knows which types to use with what type of hair, but she also doesn't over advertise, she generally just wants the best for you and your hair. She has given me great colors and hair cuts, and I will definitely be coming back again! Also, free touch ups on the cut - How great is that?! Another plus: the salon's decor is absolutely gorgeous! It's sort of rustic and eclectic, but also modern. I instantly loved it! Everyone is really friendly and accommodating, and the salon is also extremely environmentally friendly! They don't use harsh chemical hair dyes (no ammonia), recycle almost everything that they can (your cut off hair gets recycled too!), and their products are health conscious and environmentally friendly. I really wanted to like The Beauty Parlour because of all the great reviews and I've always had a really hard time trying to find a hair salon that I was satisfied with, so I booked an appointment. The decor is beautiful, and the receptionist (sorry I did not catch the name) was super sweet and offered tea/coffee. I had Stephanie as a stylist, and she's lovely. Conversation was minimal and awkward, but I'm not much of a talker to begin with. I wanted a brightish red colour, and previously at another hair salon my hair was bleached a bit and then dye was put on. Stephanie applied dye to my hair without washing it first - which I was a little thrown off by, but I do hear dye holds on better to unwashed hair and was just grateful I didn't have any product in my hair. I think I should have said something when she applied the dye right away without using bleach or anything to lift my hair colour, but I trusted that she knew what she was doing. After my hair was washed and dried, then styled, the resulting colour is a burgundy-plum that was red only in the sunlight. The roots are a completely different colour from the rest of my hair and it's just so..brownish. It's a nice natural shade, but it wasn't what I had expected and definitely not what I wanted. I feel bad because during my experience, the other clients seemed to really like their new hairstyles and I wanted to like mine too, but I didn't. Everything else was lovely, and I would like to give the Beauty Parlour another chance but for the price I think I'll just try somewhere else to fix up my hair a bit. read more

I'm hesitant to add to all the good reviews in case I can't get an appointment in the future in light of it! Long story short: great atmosphere, happy with the cut, happy with the service, happy with the puppy kisses from a staffers dog! Short story long: The salon is in kind of a run down part of Whyte Ave, which had me concerned. However, when you go up the stairs and into the salon, it's like a whole new world...really! My first and only experience going was very positive. My stylist listened to exactly what I said my problem areas were (dryness, cowlick, volume), what I wanted done (bangs and layers with picture provided for reference), and what kind of product I was looking for. I walked out of there with my hair looking as close to the picture I provided as possible and very pleased with how it was styled (usually I leave salons looking like a soccer mom - nothing against soccer moms....but I mean like in MY mom's day ;-). Conversation was both personal and professional and I felt very comfortable telling the stylist what I wanted and what I did and did not like. Overall, I'll be back. I'm definitely a fan and I RARELY have ever said that about any salon in Edmonton. read more

I did decide to go back after getting a message from Aspen, the salon manager, regarding my concerns. She seemed genuinely upset by what I had said, and wanted to make things right. She even gave me a call when I didn't message her back right away, so I figured I would give them the benefit of the doubt and go back in. I needed my bangs fixed, and she said she had a 945 appointment open on Tuesday with Stephanie. Perfect. As soon as I got home, I told my fiance about it so we could plan it in to our day. Unfortunately, we were running late the morning of, so I gave the salon a call and told them we were going to be a little late. Turns out she had me booked in for 930, and thought I was already running 15 minutes behind. Huh. So, it was either book for the next day or take a 1030 with Dean. I chose the 1030 with Dean. I wanted to get things fixed. Right when we were parking the car, my phone rang and Aspen said that Stephanie could clean up my bangs right then and Dean could do my shampoo and blow dry afterwards. Fair enough. So, up we went. Stephanie was mostly responsive to what I had to say, and I pulled up more pictures of the type of bangs I was going for (I found an actual picture of Bettie Page, as well as referencing Katy Perry, as much as it pained me to do so). I also showed her the piece of hair that had been blunted, and I was surprised when she took no credit for it. Apparently, a choppy, blunt piece of hair just magically happened all by itself. I wasn't in the mood to argue about it. I know it wasn't there before. My fiance and maid of honour (who actually asked what happened to my bangs) know it wasn't, so that's good enough for me. She did a good job with the reshaping, and I was wearing my contacts, in spite of another headache. They are a good length and a lovely shape. She was also much more talkative this time. Dean did a great job washing my hair. He told me exactly what he was using when I commented on how good it smelled. He also didn't overload me with product when I told him I never really use anything on my hair normally. I'm a "heat protector only" kind of girl. It was lovely, shiny and bouncy when all was said and done. Overall, my hair is much better than the first cut. Would I go back? I'm still not sure. My fiance was a little turned off that Aspen mentioned she was a wedding photog while we were on the way out, and offered her list of connections. I think she was just trying to be helpful. Most brides will take any help they can get, after all. Like I said before, I'm still undecided on whether I'll go back, but they did a lot to fix their mistakes, and I give them kudos for that. read more

The atmosphere of The Beauty Parlour was great, but I'm sorry to say I wasn't impressed with what I left with. During the consultation I said I wanted an ombre style colouring, but gave him a lot of creative freedom with what he wanted to do. He told me he wanted to put in some highlights but it wasn't going to cost that much because it wasn't a corrective colouring. When I went to the salon he ended up giving me a full set of highlights in terms of colour, but it was not very noticeable, and my roots (which were probably half an inch grown) were not touched at all. Afterwards he spent only 10 minutes trimming my hair. When he asked if he could straighten my hair, I was naive and did not think it would cost extra, but it might have as the bill came to ~$230. Without a tip. The most disappointing part of this is that nobody even noticed I did anything to my hair after all that, not even the people I see everyday, and I hardly noticed myself. read more

I booked an appointment here in the summer for my wedding. Although I wasn't exactly sure about what I wanted, the stylist did an amazing job on my hair, and the whole bridal party, including my Mom. Everyone loved their hair and looked great in the wedding photos! On top of their professionalism and knowledge they are all super nice. I really liked all the products they used, and loved the actual salon itself as well. It has great ambience. I love the fact that this salon actually cares about the environment and does something about it! I would definitely recommend this salon for any hair need. I heard about this eco-friendly salon from an article in the Edmonton Journal, so I decided to check it out. It's very cool inside, with reclaimed wood on the floors, and reused chairs and sinks. They're obviously targeting the Whyte Ave crowd, but I still felt cozy in the salon. Desiree, I think she was the owner, gave me a cool cut, and I got my hair coloured (to hide my gray). I liked the colour a lot - I have a skin condition and have found that colour normally "burns" my head a bit, but I didn't feel that this time. The colourist mentioned something about it lacking two things that normal colour has, but I forget exactly what they were. She said it's good for people with allergies, so I let her know about my skin condition and told her it's good for that as well. It was a great experience, and I'll definitely be back. read more

I have long wavy hair and it seems like a difficult style to cut properly. Unfortunately it was around Xmas time, so they were busy and I couldn't get in with Des :( I was recommended to Alysha, who happened to be just as amazing and took very good care of me! I initially heard about The Beauty Parlour from friends. Every time they went to this salon they'd come back with gorgeous haircuts & colours. After one particularly bad haircut, I decided to try out the Parlour. According to their website, The BP believes in beauty with a conscience. They offer ammonia-free colour services with little or no scent properties or chemical emanation. They also stock Kevin Murphy products, of which I am a fan. Anyways, after walking up the stairs to their 2nd floor location (note:no elevators) I immediately feel comfortable in their spacious, tranquil salon. I feel relaxed here, and I enjoy the vintage-y ambiance created by their reclaimed furnishings and wood flooring. It's also got high windows with views of Whyte Ave. The friendly receptionist usually offers wine (!), coffee, green tea, or juice.While waiting for my stylist Alysha, I check out their mini-boutique. Clothing from local designer Cinder+Smoke and jewelry from local artist Plum Tipsy are among the fun products they stock. I always get my hair done by Alysha. She listens as I attempt to describe what i want, and my hair turns out gorgeous every time. She cuts with precision and doesn't use the razor much to texture my coarse,thick hair. I highly recommend Alysha! Because I have short hair, I am charged for a men's cut ($60), so it's very reasonable, in my opinion, for an exceptional salon. Also, you get 5% off if you pay with cash! I went to the Beauty Parlour on recommendations from friends. The place itself has a lovely decor and the staff are very friendly. I had booked a cut and color and needless to say, 2 days after my booking nobody could notice either of the two. The color they applied did not even last TWO full days before fading away completely. I hadn't even washed it and the color had vanished! The hairdresser had warned me that the color was not permanent but she assured me that it would stick around for at least two weeks. I went back after the weekend to complain, thinking that perhaps they had wrongfully applied the product or could offer a solution to this issue. They would not recognize that as a customer, it was highly deceiving and disappointing to pay over $200 for something we were told would last a few weeks only to have it vanish within 2 days. They did not offer any valuable solutions. The haircut itself was more like a trim of what I already had. - UPDATE: A day after I posted this review I got a phone-call from the Parlour wondering if I wanted to come in to get the colour redone. I headed in and decided against redoing the previous color but opted for some blonder bits for summer - all free of charge. They even offered to touch-up my haircut. On top of all of this they will order me a shampoo that will deposit pigments and hopefully give me my desired color. This definitely puts them in my good books! read more

The Beauty Parlous is gorgeous! The decor alone is worth a visit, but their services will keep you there. I went for my first visit this week and will be back for sure. I've been meaning to go see Celine for ages, she does many of my friends hair and they all rave about her. I went in for a trim and blowout and left feeling amazing! She suggested some great products that I can use at home. I'm pretty picky about product and LOVE that they carry Kevin Murphy which is cruelty free, awesome and the stuff I got (Hair Resort Spray) smells delicious!! The overall vibe of the salon is laid back and welcoming. The other clients in we're getting fun cuts and colours, which all looked awesome. It's clear the stylists here take pride in their work and it may inspire me to do something a bit more adventurous next time! Thanks Beauty Parlour Crew! read more
