If you like spicy food, this is definitely the place to go! The food was full of flavor and had the perfect amount of heat. Everything we tried was delicious, and I would definitely come back again to try more dishes!
Heard friend raving about this place so se have to try. This place is busy, so expect lines and add waiting time. We tried swing pork belly, I could see almost every table has this. Such a balanced good flavor. The chicken dish is just okay, I had it better elsewhere, prawn is better. My favorite would be the mapo tofu. We also order the water spinach that's not arrived by the time we almost finish out food. Service is good, love the complimentary tea.
I enjoyed a dinner here with a group of 7 friends. We ordered 9 dishes total and everyone left very full. Some standouts were the twice cooked pork, the dry fried long beans, and the fish soup. The twice cooked pork had very thinly sliced pork and it was rich and well seasoned with chili bean paste. The long beans were wrinkly and deep fried with savory ground pork mixed in. The fish sound had abundant tender pieces of fish and a creamy mild broth. I convinced my dining companions to try the braised kidney flowers, as 火爆腰花 is one of my favorite sichuan dishes and I was interested to try this braised version. While most of my friends were not particularly into the kidney, I really enjoyed this dish. The hatched kidneys were floating in a rich broth with peppers and bundles of glass noodles. The noodles were unexpected, but a very welcome addition as they allowed me to consume more of the delicious braising liquid. The kidneys were tender and bouncy, exactly I as expected them to be. I didn't place the order so I'm not sure if you can select the spiciness level of your food when ordering, but I didn't find any of this food to be particularly spicy and I found the tingly mala notes to be muted. While everything was very delicious, aside from the sweet and sour pork which I found to be inedibly sweet, I think this is a more tame and toned down expression of bold Sichuan flavors. The service was extremely friendly and I would return again for another group dinner, as they have enough options here to satisfy a wide variety of diners with different palettes. Hopefully next time I can sell my companions on the 夫妻肺片，as I've heard they make a great iteration of the dish here at Mountain House and I would love to try it.
Came to mountain house probably not for the first time, but first time writing reviews. Parked in the major parking lot in flushing and had to walk a few blocks. No line, restaurant is big and spacious, did not need a reservation. The servers were efficient. You order on an ipad and they told us it would take up to 25 mins for food to come out bc it's busy but food came out after less than 5 mins. The dishes were all flavorful, most of them are spicy. The spice flavor is really good and not just the regular spice you get from Chinese supermarkets. All of our dishes had spicy or numbing kick to it except the lotus one, so it got kind of tiring in the end, but I guess this is why you come to this restaurant. Price was definitely worth it and the amount is decent. Will definitely come again next time we're craving spicy food!
Szechuan mountain house is one of the original Szechuan restaurants to open in downtown flushing. It continues to draw in a sizeable crowd due to its strong reputation. I've dined here with my family twice and in the most recent occasion, we came with no reservations around 2:30pm on a Sunday. All the tables were taken as they just opened at noon so we had to wait a bit. Their menu / iPad ordering system was simple to navigate and quick to place. Our table was started off with their spicy pickled cabbage, which was super addicting. I love how the spicy oil was so flavorful and the cabbage was soft and just slightly tangy. We ordered 5 dishes for our party of 5: the la-zi chicken, stir fried cabbage, grilled beef ribs, beef and mushroom bibimbap and mao xue wang. My favorites were the la-zi chicken as the diced chicken was super crispy and flavorful. The spice level and numbingness was just the right amount. Next comes the beef and mushroom bibimbap, which is mixed and served at the table. The flavors were more soy based and was very balanced. The stir fried cabbage was cooked well but the pork in the dish was extremely salty. The grilled beef ribs came with steamed baos, similar to peking duck. I enjoyed the experience and presentation but the dish was a bit boring. Toppings included a spicy hot sauce, cucumbers and scallions along with the sliced beef that was individually torched at the table. Lastly the mao xue wang is a traditional stew featuring offals and blood curds. This one had duck blood, tripe, and intestines. I was extremely disappointed by this dish as I was expecting some tofu and small pork intestines but it didn't have either. The tripe and intestines were very crunchy, wherwas the duck blood was silky and soft. The flavor was very basic mala stew and had a ton of red chili peppers. Overall I had a decent meal at Mountain house but can't help but wonder if I ordered the right things since not everything was as good as I hoped. I will mostly likely return to give their other menu items a try.
Came here for a dinner date and had such a great experience. The interior is beautiful and has such an authentic vibe. The restaurant was packed for dinner but we still got seated right away. We ordered the La-Zi chicken, eggplant, sour beef cabbage soup, and a sour plum drink. Everything was so flavorful and delicious, and the sour plum drink was super refreshing. What really made this place stand out though was the service. The staff was incredibly attentive and thoughtful. They even offered me a hair tie which I thought was such a sweet touch.
Food: This is one of my favorite restaurants EVER, and I usually go to the location in Manhattan located on St. Marks. This restaurant serves traditional Sichuan cuisine, but they also have other non-spicy dishes. We tried the string beans, fish in chili oil, sizzling tofu, and fried rice. All four dishes were amazing, and I would highly recommend them, especially the fish in chili oil. For this dish, you have a choice of black fish (bones) or a fish without bones; if you're okay with a few bones, I would suggest getting the black fish which has a silkier and softer meat. String beans were cooked perfectly and packed with flavor. Service: Service was good but could be better. It took a while to get someone when we needed water or wanted to get the bill because they were so busy. Ambiance: The decor is beautiful in this restaurant. They can accommodate both small and large groups. Seating is comfortable and spacious. They have nice booths as well as tables throughout the restaurant. Seating is always sectioned off and separated so you don't feel like you're sitting right next to anyone. They have definitely put a lot of thought into the ambiance of the restaurant from the design of the menus to the table setting to the fountain in front. Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend this restaurant!
Loveddd mountain house!! We went really early at around 4pm on a Sunday and it was still packed!! Waited about 10 mins and got seated pretty quickly. My only regret is not going with more people so we could have tried more dishes. They gave an appetizer of spicy cabbage, and we got the swing pork belly, the mapo tofu and string beans. It's been forever since I've had the swinging pork in the US so that was refreshing to have. But the standout dishes were the mapo tofu and the string beans! Loved them both and they were not too spicy but had the mala spice / burn to the tongue to them. Delicious!! Loved that they also provided tea with the food too. And super affordable pricing for New York and large portions. We will definitely be back!
I made a reservation day before for 5:30 PM on a Saturday night, for my friend's birthday. When we arrived we were seated at a small table for 2, the chairs are wooden stools with no backing, very hard and uncomfortable. The hostess came with 2 large buckets to put our coats in but she left it at an empty table behind ours as she got distracted with seating another party...I move it over and put them under our table so there goes the leg room as well. I'm just surprised why other party of 2s were seated at banquets and there were empty slots available but she sat us there...alas I decided not to bring this up to not dampen the mood. Seating was terrible, our backs and behinds ached by the end of the meal and we didn't want to stay any longer because of it. I think front house management can do a better job of seating arrangements (those with reservations and notes versus walk-ins, especially for special events). They serve a free hot pot of tea and some pickled cabbages when you sit down. Food is selected from an electronic menu and you send it to the kitchen, from which a server came over to confirm our selections are correct and asked if we had any food allergies. Service was polite and on point. They changed our plates once throughout our dining experience. Food wise, it's hit or miss. We got: - Fu-Qi special for appetizer, pretty good - Pickled Pepper Frogs (with bones), this was excellent - Fried Rice with Szechuan pickles and bacon. This was disappointing, the rice was soggy and unflavored...like the chef forgot to put salt...it's really not OK for a Chinese restaurant to mess up on fried rice especially at $19.95. Uncle Roger would not be happy lol. - Sautéed water spinach, also super disappointing. Lacked flavor entirely, not a single taste of salt...this is the one vegetable dish that almost every Chinese restaurant chefs cooks, this is the worst one I've ever had. $17.95, I'll say skip it! Overall, the bill came out to close to a little over $100 for a party of 2. I can find much better Szechuan restaurants in Flushing for a this price and more comfortable seating.
I'm still daydreaming about the Schezuan Chicken. It was perfectly spicy, the pork belly was well stir-fried and the string beans were nice and tender. The crispy tofu had a bit of an umami flavor that my boyfriend loved but I could've done without. There is a rustic ambiance to the place which I really like and service was good! The meal comes with this delicious fragrant tea and pickled veggies as an fyi. Note: There is a lot of peppercorn in the chicken which my boyfriend found numbed his mouth if that's something you'd want to avoid! I personally like it :)
I had a craving for spicy food after a long day at work, and my husband and I decided to come here. All the dishes were so delicious. Staff were welcoming and friendly, and we also loved the charming ambiance there. I'll definitely keep this place in mind when I crave for Sichuan dishes again.
Probably my favorite Sichuan place in NYC! Coming in on a Friday night, I felt the wait wasn't too bad - I would say about 20 mins. I had the mapo tofu, tomato fish stew, shrimp fried rice, and a chicken dish that I can't remember the name of. I was worried about the spice level so ordered mild, but mild was definitely mild. I think that affected the mapo tofu the most as it became more of a dish on the sweeter side. My two favorite dishes was the tomato fish stew and the fried rice! Would definitely order those 2 again!
The last day of our NYC visit brought us to Flushing to visit our old friends. To commemorate our visit, they brought us here for lunch. From the beautiful Koi pond to the ornate chinese calligraphy and decorations, Szechuan Mountain House exuded perfection. The dining room is large with spacious tables and chairs. The lighting and dark colors created a peaceful inviting ambiance. We were a party of 7 so we got a large round table complete with lazy susan. Our hot jasmine tea and plum juice arrived quickly. The Jasmine tea was refreshing. It was my first time trying plum juice and it was very good. We were the newbies so we let our friend Liang do all the ordering. Okra salad: a nice cold appetizer, okra swimming in a spicy sauce. Grilled beef ribs: marinated, grilled to perfection, delicious. Sweet & Sour spare ribs: delicious tangy sauce, delicious ribs. Gong Bo chicken: its actually pork belly, chili spicy, delicious. Ma-La Prawn: shell on shrimp stir fried in dried chili and peppercorns, one of my favorites! Fu-Qi Special: cold dish, beef and tripe slices in a peanut chili sauce, hot, delicious. Pickled pepper frog: frog meat pickled with braised chili pepper, tasted like chicken. Fried rice with bacon & szechuan pickles: different, delicious! Szechuan style fried noodles: delicious. Sauteed long beans with eggplant: delicious. Stir fried cauliflower: another one of my favs. Ma-Po tofu: tofu in chili sauce, spicy, delicious. We were running out of space on the table to put the dishes. I was quite elated that Liang got to take home all the leftovers so nothing was wasted. Presentation of dishes were exquisite right down to their printed napkins (see photos). Everything was spicy HOT but so good! Yom Yom Yom Yom! Service was attentive and spot on. She kept the water and tea flowing because of all our spicy dishes. Thank you Liang for introducing us to the Szechuan Mountain House experience! This could definitely be a reason to return for another visit! read more
The restaurant is beautifully decorated. I was here dining in before but didn't write a Yelp review. Recently I bought takeouts and decided to review them. I bought Beef Sour Soup, La-Zi Chicken (because they didn't have Gong Bo Chicken), and Stir-Fried Chinese Long Beans. I called when they just opened and didn't have many customers, but it still took 30-40 minutes. So I would say it's kinda slow. And I found it strange that they didn't have something as standard as Gong Bo Chicken. The food was very good, everything was very tasty. The Beef Sour Soup came in a good size tub with plenty of high quality beef slices. And I remember last time we were dining in, the Swing Pork Belly appetizer was really, really good. We kept getting encore! This is a solid Szechuan restaurant and prices are reasonable. I do recommend them. read more

TLDR: So many years later, I still love SMG. The menu has gotten smaller but still super tasty in such a competitive space. The issue with most Chinese places it's hard to order many dishes with just two people. So here is my favorite set for two, assuming you can handle your heat. Szechuan fried shredded eel. Crispy ribbons of tender eel, tossed in peppercorns, chilis. This is tender, it's hot and it is SPICY. If you like eel and you like a f*ck ton of kick; you will love this. Mapo tofu. Yes - so simple I know but this one is super umami rich. There's bits of beef, it's hot, it's tangy, it's numby. Get extra rice to shovel this into your mouth. Sichuan long beans. String beans, pork, mushrooms, spicy - you do need some veg for this meal. Try this recommended set and enjoy! read more

Recently came back again and loved it! The price is definitely on the higher end, but comparable with nearby places in the plaza area. Tried the string beans and shrimp, very good!! Service is friendly. Ambiance is nice. If you sit too close to the door, it will definitely get cold during the winter months. The indoor ventilation is good, considering the open door/air circulation. Very glad to see this place still around after all these years! read more

A few dishes aren't spicy enough, but Chinese restaurants taste even spicier.在国内吃习惯中餐的话，还是不够味重，这个还是像老外的改良版味道了 可能是怕老外吃不惯 read more
Came here on a weekend night with a few friends and put our name down for the waitlist. Definitely gets super crowded and the wait is about 30 mins+ around dinner time. Despite the big crowds, the service is great and the servers are very attentive and helpful. We ordered the below dishes and you can choose the spice level for some of them. Nothing was super spicy to the point we couldn't eat it. Everything tasted very well cooked. They also have a nice bathroom and small cute mints for after your dinner on your way out. Definitely recommend this place! read more

This restaurant was incredible. The decoration and ambiance were excellent. The service was on point. And most importantly, the food was superb. All of the dishes were amazing in taste and rich in flavor! Our staters were Swing Pork Belly (蒜泥白肉 variant) and Okra Salad. The presentation on both were eye-catching (see pictures 1 and 2). Having the cucumbers and fatty pork slices draping over the garlic/spicy dipping sauce was definitely a first for me! Our veggies dishes were a Cauliflower with Pork (not pictured) and Ma-Po Tofu. The textures on both were reminiscent of similar childhood dishes in China. The meat dishes were Mala Beef and House Chicken. Both dishes had a nice balance of heat and numbness. I would go back and order all of the same dishes again! But because they were all so good, it would be a disservice to myself and family to not try the other dishes! read more
One of my favorite place to get Szechuan dishes. The vibe is so nice with ancient Chinese theme. The food is always on point with pretty platting. we also like the tea they serve, they keep it over fire to keep it warm too!. The service is very nice, sometimes the servers are not the most fluent in English but pointing at the menu always works. I think it's a nice place for a date~~~the only think I didn't like is that their spicy can be inconsistent across dishes. Some dish are a good and perfect amount of spicy but some dishes like their mapo tofu was so spicy I could barely eat it, even tho it was yummy read more
This place nails authentic Sichuan flavors -- the spice is proper and full of depth. Every dish we tried was on point. On top of that, the service is warm and attentive; the staff are genuinely friendly. Definitely worth coming back for more. read more

Really disappointing experience. We waited over an hour, had to chase down a waiter, and when the food finally came only half the order arrived and there was raw chicken on the plate. The staff were dismissive and didn't seem to care. Not what I expected based on the reviews. read more

Had a delicious dinner here and enjoyed all the dishes I ordered! I can see why there's always a long line. The good thing is there's a waitlist so you can just plug in your phone number and it'll text you when the table is ready. I also love the way this restaurant is decorated. It definitely evokes a mountain house. I ordered these dishes for a party of four: 1. Swing Pork Belly (5/5) 2. Mapo Tofu (4/5) 3. Stir Fried Chinese Long Bean (5/5) 4. Grilled Beef Ribs (5/4) Everything was so good and not too spicy. The mapo tofu was the spiciest out of all of those I'd say. I also thought it was cool that they use a blowtorch to blast the beef at the table! read more
Upon our arrival to New York, my bf and I headed to Flushing to have lunch here. Boy am I glad he found this place. When we got there, I was impressed with the ambiance and how nice the interior looked. It seems like a perfect date night location. The workers were very nice. They had a spot for us to leave our luggage and seated us in one of the booths nearby. One of the workers gave us a pot of tea which was interestingly set up with a candle underneath. I was VERY amazed at everything. The teacups were also nice looking lol. They also had a complementary plate of pickled cabbage. This was SUPER addicting. We ordered La-zi chicken and mix pepper w/ rabbit meat. The La-zi chicken was fantastic. It was very crispy, spicy, and flavorful. This was our favorite of the two dishes. The mix pepper w/ rabbit meat was also good but not exactly in my preferred flavor profile. Its flavor was more tangy and muted compared to the La-zi chicken. This was my first time trying rabbit as well, and I just thought there were too many tiny bones to fully enjoy eating it. Of the 4 days we spent in New York, this was probably my favorite place we ate at. The pricing is honestly average and reasonable despite Yelp listing the place with three dollar signs. Proportions were pretty big and my bf and I couldn't finish everything. Go with a small group so you can share and try more dishes. Definitely recommend it. read more
Having tried both locations in flushing and st. Marks, I honestly love the flushing location so much more due to the shorter wait though not as big in size. I also feel the service is better here as well. Szechuan Mountain House is my go to when I'm craving tongue numbing spicy food. The interior transport you back to china - definitely try to sit at a booth for the added feel of being in china while eating. We always get the swing pork belly appetizer, Kung pao chicken, fried spicy intestines, fatty beef in sour soup, and their jumbo shrimp! It's definitely worth the price as portions sizes of entrees are fairly large! Check out my foodsta @chiuventure for a closer look and more details of my dining experience here as well as other establishments in NYC and around the world! read more
I cannot wait to come eat here again! First time here and right off I loved the atmosphere, very inviting and it smelled great. We just walked in without reservations, so we had to wait for about 20 minutes. They had a little waiting room and they brought us some chai while we waited. Once our table was ready we ordered some sake and they brought hot tea. For starters we has the swing pork belly, it's beautiful and very Instagramable, but also very delicious. For mains we tried a few, first was peppercorn beef spicy, they were not kidding, spicy here is no joke! It was so hot but so delicious I couldn't stop eating it. My partner loved it as is, but I would get medium next time. Second we ordered ma-po tofu, very good, lots of flavor. Lastly we got the pineapple fried rice that came with shrimp with no spice and it was very refreshing after all the spicy food we had. Everything was amazing, my mouth is water just thinking about eating here again. read more

Came back again for the prawn and it was one of the best. The pork belly and cucumber was delicious l. Not a huge portion but a great starter. The wait could be long on the weekend, but we got a table sooner than expected. The restaurant was spacious with a tea house-like decor. Service was prompt, and the dishes came out fast. You even get to sample some pickled cabbage as you wait. We enjoyed the dishes recommended by our waiter. The swing pork belly (no. 1 hit) was to die for! The pork belly was thinly sliced and layered with cucumber slices. Not only was it a beautiful presentation, it tasted delicious. For entrees, we ordered Szechuan shredded pork and sautéed Chinese long beans with eggplant to share. The portion was generous enough for two plus leftovers. read more

Eater currently lists this restaurant among the most essential in the city, and I can see why. The food is delicious and a wonderful representation of Szechuan cooking, though other styles and approaches are also on offer. This is not an "American Chinese" restaurant, but that should only encourage novices to try something new. Inside, my party was seated at a booth in the back. We shared a few items: noodles, chicken, mapo tofu. The chicken was served with bones, a preparation which seemingly made the food more flavorful but did require caution while eating. The mapo tofu was robust and hearty, while the noodles were just a delight to consume. Portions were generous but between the three of us we managed to eat it all. Hot tea was provided complimentary and I found the prices reasonable. Service was attentive and we were able to get clean side plates and water refills on request. This is a solid dining destination in a neighborhood with enough good food to last a lifetime. read more
Loved their cabbage and beef soup, it has a little Mala (numbing) spice but packed with flavor. The hanging pork belly was a cold dish and dipped in raw garlic sauce definitively gave the dish a unique taste. If you like numbing spice and spicy food, definitely check this place out. read more

I wasn't convinced this place would live up to all the hype and I heard the east village location was better but after eating here I wonder if thats even possible. Definitely the best fu-qi special and spicy fish stew I've had. We got less spice and I think I would've preferred a bit more but my butt is definitely thankful we didnt. Personally the la-zi chicken and ma-po tofu stood out much less than the other dishes but went really well with rice. Honestly I've had a lot of Szechuan food in nyc so I didnt think anywhere would stand out anymore but this place has something special. I highly recommend if you want authentic szechuan food! read more
Love the swing pork belly. That's the best dish. Wife likes the kidney with scallon. Mapo tofu is spicy. I don't really like the corn. I think it is unique, pretty unique with egg yolk, but good for one time only. Don't really like the chicken. Too dry. Ambiance is nice. Service was great too. read more
If you love spicy food, try this place. It's hard to find on the menu something that's not spicy. The interior decor is very aesthetic - great vibes. The shredded pork dish was ok- it's a bit too oily to my liking. Taste was good tho. Swing pork belly is unique- I recommend it for an appetizer. Beef dish we ordered was one of the few non-spicy options on menu. Service was good and fast. I like the presentation of the dishes and the complimentary tea. read more

Great spot for flavorful Szechuan dishes in a classy ambiance. When you sit down, they give you a small bowl of complimentary spicy cabbage, which was a tasty way to start the meal. Swing Pork Belly - I feel like everyone gets this and it did not disappoint. The cucumber added freshness to the meat, which was soft and tender, and the dipping sauce was spicy but also sweet and flavorful. Plus, it looks cool Stir Fried Pork Intestines, Tripe, Ears with red peppers - Pretty spicy (didn't help that I accidentally ate one of the peppers and had to go to the bathroom to rinse my mouth LOL) and you get the mala kick, but it's also flavorful and you get a variety of textures with the 3 different proteins. Snow Pea Shoot - Always gotta get veggies for some freshness (and bc health). A lot of places seem to treat vegetable dishes as an after thought, but this dish was prepared well and the pea shoots were cooked and seasoned perfectly. Ik you don't come here for vegetables, but they also have the best vegetables out of the Chinese restaurants I've tried here. read more
5/5 service. So speedy and they keep an eye on you to see if you need water/napkins/etc. Food comes out pretty fast too! 5/5 ambiance. Love the vibe and decoration. I felt like I came to Asia and was somewhere else, and not Flushing, while eating dinner! Absolutely loved it. 5/5 food. The salad that comes out while waiting for the food we ordered was so good and refreshing, every dish portion size was good, price was affordable, and taste was all amazing. Everything tasted so authentic and flavorful, and each dish was so clean and well seasoned. I would definitely come back here for the dishes that I tried, and to try many of their other dishes! One thing to just note is that the mapo tofu here was PRETTY spicy.. and gave my tongue a tingly feeling! As I kept eating more, my water also started to taste a little funky and sparkly.. I really don't know what kind of spice they put in there to season it but don't get me wrong, it was absolutely delicious, but it just wasn't something that I was expecting! Overall, this place is awesome for Szechuan food. Don't forget to get their house special candies as you walk out!! It is also so yummy (: read more

Szechuan Mountain House is one of my top picks for restaurants! I've visited both locations, and the service at each was exceptional--very attentive. The restaurant itself is stunning. Personally, I prefer the Flushing location because it's more spacious, but honestly, both are fantastic. Be prepared for a wait, though; it gets busy on weekdays and weekends. My favorite dishes are the fish fillet stew in red chili sauce, stir-fried Chinese long beans, and lazi chicken. They're deliciously spicy, so if you're not into heat, I recommend asking them to go easy on it. Despite the spiciness, the flavors are incredible. I've tried many dishes here and haven't had a single bad one. Highly recommend it! read more
This place is packed during the weekend dinner. We put ourselves on the waitlist and they called us to come in which was about 15 minutes. The interior is dim and intimate and the decorations are very nice. The service is very good and attentive as there many waiters who came and helped us. We started off with the swinging pork which was my favorite dish. The pork was soft and the sauce underneath was very garlicky so perfect for a garlic lover like me. The La Zi chicken was super spicy. It was numbing my mouth and I could not eat alot of it. Unless you have a really high spice tolerance, it is difficult to eat. We finished off with the double cooked pork which was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Would recommend. This place is probably better with a larger group of people so you can order a variety of dishes to share. Would come back again with more friends. read more
Szechuan Mountain House remains my favorite Chinese restaurant in New York, and perhaps ever. It never disappoints and has completely changed my standards for all Chinese cuisine, which I realize is unfair. :) The food is just SO GOOD. I especially love their dry fry fish and shrimp dishes as well as their eggplant with long beans and their fried rice with mountain greens. I could eat here every single day and not get tired of it. The folks who work here are some of the sweetest people you'll meet, and they are so attentive and provide excellent recommendations. My husband and I come here at least a few times a month and have recommended it to so many people, including friends in Boston since they are opening a location there. I'm already looking forward to our next visit, which will probably be next week! read more
