I made a reservation day before for 5:30 PM on a Saturday night, for my friend's birthday. When we arrived we were seated at a small table for 2, the chairs are wooden stools with no backing, very hard and uncomfortable. The hostess came with 2 large buckets to put our coats in but she left it at an empty table behind ours as she got distracted with seating another party...I move it over and put them under our table so there goes the leg room as well. I'm just surprised why other party of 2s were seated at banquets and there were empty slots available but she sat us there...alas I decided not to bring this up to not dampen the mood. Seating was terrible, our backs and behinds ached by the end of the meal and we didn't want to stay any longer because of it. I think front house management can do a better job of seating arrangements (those with reservations and notes versus walk-ins, especially for special events). They serve a free hot pot of tea and some pickled cabbages when you sit down. Food is selected from an electronic menu and you send it to the kitchen, from which a server came over to confirm our selections are correct and asked if we had any food allergies. Service was polite and on point. They changed our plates once throughout our dining experience. Food wise, it's hit or miss. We got: - Fu-Qi special for appetizer, pretty good - Pickled Pepper Frogs (with bones), this was excellent - Fried Rice with Szechuan pickles and bacon. This was disappointing, the rice was soggy and unflavored...like the chef forgot to put salt...it's really not OK for a Chinese restaurant to mess up on fried rice especially at $19.95. Uncle Roger would not be happy lol. - Sautéed water spinach, also super disappointing. Lacked flavor entirely, not a single taste of salt...this is the one vegetable dish that almost every Chinese restaurant chefs cooks, this is the worst one I've ever had. $17.95, I'll say skip it! Overall, the bill came out to close to a little over $100 for a party of 2. I can find much better Szechuan restaurants in Flushing for a this price and more comfortable seating.
Came here for a dinner date and had such a great experience. The interior is beautiful and has such an authentic vibe. The restaurant was packed for dinner but we still got seated right away. We ordered the La-Zi chicken, eggplant, sour beef cabbage soup, and a sour plum drink. Everything was so flavorful and delicious, and the sour plum drink was super refreshing. What really made this place stand out though was the service. The staff was incredibly attentive and thoughtful. They even offered me a hair tie which I thought was such a sweet touch.
Food: This is one of my favorite restaurants EVER, and I usually go to the location in Manhattan located on St. Marks. This restaurant serves traditional Sichuan cuisine, but they also have other non-spicy dishes. We tried the string beans, fish in chili oil, sizzling tofu, and fried rice. All four dishes were amazing, and I would highly recommend them, especially the fish in chili oil. For this dish, you have a choice of black fish (bones) or a fish without bones; if you're okay with a few bones, I would suggest getting the black fish which has a silkier and softer meat. String beans were cooked perfectly and packed with flavor. Service: Service was good but could be better. It took a while to get someone when we needed water or wanted to get the bill because they were so busy. Ambiance: The decor is beautiful in this restaurant. They can accommodate both small and large groups. Seating is comfortable and spacious. They have nice booths as well as tables throughout the restaurant. Seating is always sectioned off and separated so you don't feel like you're sitting right next to anyone. They have definitely put a lot of thought into the ambiance of the restaurant from the design of the menus to the table setting to the fountain in front. Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend this restaurant!
Loveddd mountain house!! We went really early at around 4pm on a Sunday and it was still packed!! Waited about 10 mins and got seated pretty quickly. My only regret is not going with more people so we could have tried more dishes. They gave an appetizer of spicy cabbage, and we got the swing pork belly, the mapo tofu and string beans. It's been forever since I've had the swinging pork in the US so that was refreshing to have. But the standout dishes were the mapo tofu and the string beans! Loved them both and they were not too spicy but had the mala spice / burn to the tongue to them. Delicious!! Loved that they also provided tea with the food too. And super affordable pricing for New York and large portions. We will definitely be back!
I'm still daydreaming about the Schezuan Chicken. It was perfectly spicy, the pork belly was well stir-fried and the string beans were nice and tender. The crispy tofu had a bit of an umami flavor that my boyfriend loved but I could've done without. There is a rustic ambiance to the place which I really like and service was good! The meal comes with this delicious fragrant tea and pickled veggies as an fyi. Note: There is a lot of peppercorn in the chicken which my boyfriend found numbed his mouth if that's something you'd want to avoid! I personally like it :)
Probably my favorite Sichuan place in NYC! Coming in on a Friday night, I felt the wait wasn't too bad - I would say about 20 mins. I had the mapo tofu, tomato fish stew, shrimp fried rice, and a chicken dish that I can't remember the name of. I was worried about the spice level so ordered mild, but mild was definitely mild. I think that affected the mapo tofu the most as it became more of a dish on the sweeter side. My two favorite dishes was the tomato fish stew and the fried rice! Would definitely order those 2 again!
Went with my daughter to Mountain House since she's been before and loves spicy food. First time for me and beautiful ambiance & decor as well as food! Unfortunately my tolerance isn't as high as in my youth so I asked for least spicy and spicy sauce for her on the side. The tea was yummy with a really cool cup. I really enjoyed the wontons but everything was delish. Service was great. Tipped our waitress high since she was fast, nice & pleasant.
I had a great time coming to Mountain House. I have been to the Manhattan location previously but it was much easier to get a reservation and seated quickly at this location in Flushing. We got the double cooked pork, which is my favorite dish here. The eggplant was also very saucy and delicious. We also got this chicken and the spicy base added to the flavor. Overall, a really great experience. I really like the hot tea that they serve as well, although the tea pot is really heavy to pour from.
Originally, my family and I planned on going to nearby Che Li for dinner, but when we arrived, we were told the wait would take 2+ hours. Luckily, we rounded the corner to their sister restaurant and managed to snag a booth immediately. We ordered the swing pork belly ($14.95) to start, which ended up being one of my favorite dishes of the night. Slices of blanched pork belly and cucumber strips alternate and hang above this mildly spicy chili oil with a mound of grated garlic in the center. I found it quite refreshing (the cucumber comes in handy for later spicier dishes) and suitable for less spice-tolerant palates. We also ordered the la-zi chicken ($20.95) and the peppercorn beef ($25.95), both of which were delicious but not for the faint-hearted. In particular, I really enjoyed the peppercorn beef, but in small doses, as those Sichuan peppercorns were no joke and left me numb and drooling. We balanced the peppercorn-heavy entrées with some non-spicy crispy sizzling tofu ($19.95), grilled beef ribs ($28.95), and sautéed Chinese long beans and eggplant ($15.95). Unfortunately, I did not care for the tofu, which had a light and crispy crust but stuck to your teeth and was otherwise bland, nor the grilled beef ribs which were nothing special and quite overpriced for the portion. I did enjoy the sautéed Chinese long beans and eggplant, which had a delightful textural contrast between the crunchy beans and soft eggplant. Overall, I did enjoy most of my meal at Szechuan Mountain House and like its sister, Che Li, the menu is well thought out, the service is impeccable, and the decor is absolutely gorgeous.
We came for lunch after work because someone suggested this place. They said it had authentic flavors and they enjoyed it last time they were here. The restaurant had a unique entrance way in the midst of the modern surroundings. Inside was very serene and well decorated. We were seated fairly quickly and give menus and tea. The jasmine tea was very fragrant. I loved it. There was a QR code at the table that you can use to access a menu too. Our coworker ordered for us. We got the Beef Sour soup, hot oil wontons, country braised pork, golden corn kernels, fried rice with Szechuan special greens, sautéed Chinese long beans with eggplant, and a beef dish. Everything was delicious. The soup was spicy and you can feel it at the back of your throat. The wontons were not that spicy and were ok. We've had better. The eggplant was a big hit. I never had the corn before and I really liked it. The corn was sweet covered in a crunchy, salty duck egg coating. The braised pork was a little too salty because of the preserved vegetables. We needed more rice because many of the dishes had lots of sauce. There wasn't enough fried rice. Overall it was a good meal in a pretty atmosphere.
I came here a while ago to celebrate LNY with some friends and their family. The interior of the restaurant is pretty traditional and lively. Service was okay. We were a fairly big group and they first tried to seat us at a tiny booth. When we requested to change the tables (especially because we knew that we were going to order a lot), it was a bit difficult and they made us wait really long. Once we got seated though, we immediately ordered many MANY dishes (see photos). We ordered the szechuan numbing chicken, the mung bean jelly, beef tongue and tripe, the swing pork belly, the dumplings in chili oil, the lazi chicken, the pork intestines, beef tongue, clay pot beef stew, salted egg yolk corn, mala fish, and mao xue wang. Everything was packed full of flavor and a good portion. Favorites were the dumplings, numbing chicken, lazi chicken, and clay pot beef stew. However, we did notice that the quality was just not the same as what it used to be. Overall, it's not a bad spot for Sichuan food but there are better around!
This place is amazing and no wonder it ended up on The NY Times top 100 list. The wait was minimal and the decor inside has changed to accommodate more tables. Before the tables were just on the side is the restaurant and a weird walkway in the middle. There is a bit of a wait for the food since everything is made fresh to order and the wait is worth it. Ordering can be daunting but here are some tips: 1) it's a sichaun restaurant meaning most dishes are spicy, 2) you can ask them to tone it down but it will lack the flavor, 3) you can bring in bubble tea or milk teas such as Molly in the area to help with the heat. Kung pao chicken 4.5/5 Was not too spicy but more peanuts and fillers rather than chicken. Very flavorful with a sweet glaze and mild spice. Beef with potato pot 4/5 Mild as well with tiny potatoes and very fatty beef. The beef is tender and it might be brisket. Wasn't as flavorful as the chicken but solid and tasty nonetheless. 6.5/5 Star of the show the duck egg corn. Order this !!! it was so flavorful and has a slight crunch to it. Just heavenly if you love eggs and corn.

Mediocre but very pricy food, ok service, poor ambiance. Very disappointed. The place is packed but not many locals. Most are tourists or white college kids here for its name. The table is super small, very cramped. The floor is dirty and the table is sticky. The whole place is very loud. As for food, we got four dishes: sweet sour pork, stir fried pork kidneys, fish, and sautéed cabbage. The pork was very chewy, not tender. Fish tasted bland and not fresh. The stir fried kidneys and intestines are most scallions and peppers- tasted awful. We had to return that dish after taking one bite. The cabbage was good Overall, would not come here again. If u r looking for authentic Szechuan food rather than a tourist spot, avoid here! read more

I just want to take a moment to appreciate one of the kindest and most dedicated waitress Yaru who I've had the pleasure of meeting. Every time I visit the restaurant, Yaru goes above and beyond. She's very friendly--she has a genuine warmth and a great smile that makes you feel welcome the moment you walk in. Her service is excellent: attentive, thoughtful, quick and always communicates with a smile. You can tell she truly cares about her customers and takes pride in her work. AMAZINGGG FOOD, SERVICE, and AMBIANCE. When you walk in, it's such a cute comfy restaurant. The service and attentiveness of the waiters here is 20/10. It reminds me of the service you expect at a Michelin star restaurant. They immediately bring you a cold sichuan appetizer of lettuce. After you order, the food comes out relatively fast. We ordered the Tempan Shrimp and they saw we were peeling it so not only did they offer to change our plates multiple times but as soon as we finished the dish, they gave us hand wipes and extra tissue. They also clear dishes out so the table isn't packed but it doesn't feel like theyre doing it to rush you out. The food is amazing, full of flavor and as someone who does NOT enjoy spicy food, I was willing to suffer through the delicious numbing sense for this. Definitely get the swinging pork belly dish! Szechuan food is a dime a dozen in NYC (by far the most ubiquitous regional cuisine of China), so against that backdrop, SMH is above average but not mind-blowing. It's not quite on part with its Shanghai cousin, Che Li, but it's got a more extensive and diverse menu than the typical Szechuan restaurant. Standout dishes are the Mung Bean Jelly in a deliciously chilled mala sauce and the Beef Sour Soup--a giant cauldron of shredded meat, pickled veggies and pepper in a tangy, tart and tingly broth that easily feeds 2-4 people. A dry pot is sort of a must for Szechuan food, so we got the Szechuan Lamb Spine--but I wouldn't recommend it. Too much bone, too little meat and all of it drowning in dried pepper skins and peppercorns that no one would enjoy eating. The spiciness wasn't the issue (I've done spice challenges all over the country and won most of them), it was the boring-ness: no vegetables, no herbs, no additional seasonings or accompaniments of any kind. Just a big vat of peppers with a tiny side of meat. Service was above average too, with lots of fast, friendly attendants who granted our every request without making us feel rushed. Of course, the restaurant has that gorgeous, historic China decor that's so on trend in Flushing these days--so IGers will be doubly happy. read more
First thing's first, I like eating spicy food but ya girl cannot HANDLE THE SPICINESS. So I must say, this was EXTREMELY SPICY! Spicy yet delicious. So delicious that I could not stop eating even though I could no longer feel my tongue or taste what the food tastes like anymore. My tongue was literally numb. Came here on a night with my cousin, who loves to eat spicy. The night before we went in, we both looked at the menu from Yelp and tried to figure out what dishes to order. Everything looked delicious and we ended up ordering the Stir Fried Eel with Chili Peppers, Sour Soup, and the Sautéed Cabbage (cause veggies are a must even if they are stir fried). We really wanted to order the Slice Pork Belly in Chili Garlic Sauce but we already ordered too much for 2 people! The inside of the restaurant was also aesthetically pleasing to the eyes and the servers were attentive. Have already recommended this place to many people read more

Came for a very late lunch at around 3pm on a Sunday and still had to wait 20 mins. The decor inside is stunning - beautiful dark wood notes and bamboo - as was the tea set at each table, but the service was slow / not really attentive, and the food we thought was good but not great. We ordered the Mung Bean Jelly, which came nicely presented, but the jelly was too thick, texturally too hard, and the sauce didn't add enough flavor. We also ordered the Double Cooked Pork (not great - the pork was a bit tough and too thickly sliced), the Long Beans w/ Eggplant (pretty good), and the Mixed Pepper w/ Cony Meat (not bad, but not much cony meat). The entrees are the in the $20-30 range, but portions are small. Overall, the food here isn't bad, but you're definitely paying more for style than substance. Given how many other Sichuanese restaurants are in the area, I'd probably opt for another place first. read more
My favorite Szechuan place and my go to whenever I am craving for something numbing and spicy! I usually cannot handle spicy food, but this place is an exception. The atmosphere and decor reminds you of ancient times. Dimmed and cozy. Service can be a hit or miss depending how busy they are. We always order the same things- Swing Pork Belly, Beef and Enoki mushroom in sour cabbage soup and the fried eel with pepper Everything was amazing and rich in flavor! I did notice the size of their portions have gotten smaller compared to when they opened a few years ago though, but that doesn't stop me from coming back. read more

I came here a few times before with friends and I though this place was ok. Maybe they ordered all the right dishes? Who knows? This is the first time I went by myself and gosh... it's either I picked all the bad dishes or the majority of the dishes here suck... The spicy fried chicken（辣子雞）was like fishing for chicken pieces inside a pool of red chili peppers. The chicken was dry like a jerky and there were no seasoning what so ever other than spicy. Maybe this is the traditional style? But salt please? Pretty please? I'll even take some msg The sweet and sour ribs (糖醋排骨) was not what we expected as well... it was not what I expected from a Chinese restaurant. It was like a take out restaurant dish targeting westerners. Ribs were not cut into pieces and it came with pineapples? Not traditional Chinese at all..... geez The fu qi meat slices were bland... like I have never tasted this dish with so little flavor... maybe their salt or soy sauce expired? Service was good and the pickled veggie fried rice (芽菜炒飯), the sour soup beef (酸湯給牛) and house chicken cold dish were amazing. So I know the chef can cook, so what happened to the other dishes? Wow! This spot was sooooo good, it was definitely spicy and yes that's in the name but they delivered such a good experience inside. All of the food was perfection and service was amazing. I loved all the dishes and they compliment one another so well. I may have ordered one too many things but we had to try everything! The interior is so nice and it feels like you're entering a different part of the world when you enter Szechuan mountain house! read more

Came here with my brother and cousins a few weeks ago. We wanted to try another Szechuan restaurant but the wait was too long, so we ended up here! Loveedd the vibes in here, the decor was beautiful. The cabbage appetizer they give you in the beginning is very spicy! Beware if you can't handle spice. I had a few pieces in moderation haha. We ordered the swing pork belly, which was amazing! This is a must get cold appetizer if you come here. The garlic hot oil sauce went really well with the pork belly and cucumber! I saw a bunch of pictures of this and glad we tried it. The sauteed chinese long beans w eggplant was also good. My brother really wanted the Mala beef, but we weren't big fans of it. He thought the beef would be brisket (thinking it would be like dry hotpot style). Would pass on this next time- the flavor was good but we aren't big fans of this type of beef. My cousin really wanted to get the szechuan pickled cabbage and fish. This is definitely special- I know this is quite popular but personally wasn't a fan! I don't loove pickled cabbage so this was way too sour for my taste. Would definitely come back and try a few other things though read more

Great ventilation, the food is really really spicy though, so unless you order mala xiang guo big spicy, beware lol But if you're a spice demon like me... welcome home to the mountain house! I was eating with people with weak tolerances, so we asked if we could make it less spicy and they said no. This was like 4 years ago, though, so they might have changed their ways! The fact I can remember the experience 4 years ago is telling of how much I like this place. read more

This meal was honestly so good! We came around 2 on a Saturday and didn't have to wait very long. Their complimentary pickled cabbage and tea was so good, I think I had like 10 cups throughout the whole meal. I was scared the food wouldn't live up to the hype, but everything was so yummy! I think the sliced pork belly is a must and the eggplant with string beans are a good veggie to cut though the other spice. Szechuan spice isn't so much burning as it is numbing, so don't be intimidated. Try the items that sounds good, the spice is very tolerable! read more

I've been to Szechuan Mountain House at least 5+ times now. I'm surprised I haven't already reviewed this place. The decor and vibes is spectacular. It's modern Asian inspired, cozy and comfy. The pitcher of tea with pears and honey is just delightful when paired with all the spicy food you will be eating. I love the giant spicy fried fish they serve (market price so it's expensive). Or if you opt for another fish dish, get the house special sour fish in soup base. That one is delicious too. The hot and spicy mala fish soup one was good, but not as good as those two. Also note, I usually can handle my spice but it was very spicy lol. Beef tongue for appetizer was beautiful represented and just an amazing tender dish. I've gotten the pork belly on a rack and yeah it's good and very well plated but it's overrated in my opinion. Service was good. Although they tend to forget to give you the pitcher of pear tea for some reason. Maybe because they're used to people just drinking the on-the-house hot tea they provide. Either way, I whole heartedly recommend this place as one of the best Szechuan restaurants in NYC, or at least in Queens. read more

Perfect dinner spot! I came here around 8pm and my boyfriend and I didn't have to wait. We got the peppercorn beef, eggplant stir fry, and country braised pork belly. All the dishes were great. The beef was melt in your mouth tender and they definitely didn't skimp on the pork belly! The peppercorn beef was obviously spicy as it's a Szechuan restaurant but that wasn't a problem. - spicy food overall, but surprisingly not THAT spicy for szechuan; usually it is mouth numbing - chicken dish had very little chicken - fish dish was well proportioned with a good amount of protein - the hanging pork appetizer was delicious, but the sauce was not that spicy Overall, superior service. They kept providing us napkins, tea, and got us what we needed quickly. I would have liked to have the food be a bit more spicy, but overall, delicious Szechuan. read more
After a long day, me and my sisters decided to go to flushing for dinner . After hours of research in yelp , we decided to go to @szechuanmountainhouse and it was the best decision. We were lucky because one table was free and we were seated right away. In every table , they had complimentary tea which we enjoyed a lot . The ambience and decor of the restaurant was really nice. Our sever was very nice and attentive. We had mapo tofu, braised fish , sautéed cauliflower with rice . My sister doesn't eat meat at all so they were nice and made sure no meat was in mapo tofu. All of the dishes were really good. We enjoyed everything there. Will definitely go back there. read more

One of my Top 3 restaurants of all time. I tell everyone I know and meet to eat here. The food is amazing and high quality every time I come, and I've been here too many times to count. Once you know what you like here, you'll find yourself ordering the same dishes over and over again. My go-to dishes are the fu qi fei pian (夫妻肺片), double cooked pork (回锅肉), cabbage, and stir fried long beans (干煸四季豆). I get these every time I come, without a doubt. I've tried multiple other dishes on the menu, but these are my tried and true. I'm already planning my next trip here. Come here, you will not be disappointed. Service is excellent and the wait is not too bad. They don't have reservations so try to come early and join the waitlist in the restaurant. One of the best Szechuan Style Chinese restaurants I have tried! Well worth the trip to Flushing. Its very close to the 7 Main Street stop. The food is amazing and very tasty. We shared the shrimp, fried rice, braised country pork belly and La-Zi chicken. On the house they give you an amazing cold cabbage chili oil side dish that was so good I had to ask for more the staff is very attentive and friendly! The inside has a nice ambiance that is very welcoming! We are definitely coming back here! Go check it out yourself! read more

The Szechuan Mountain House (川山甲) is one of my favorite restaurants in Flushing. The restaurant is well decorated and provides a really dedicate atmosphere for fine dining with classic Sichan style dishes. I love the decorations with bamboos, Chinese paintings, traditional style desks and chairs, a small stove on all tables boiling tea, and tea cups with a mixture feature of glass and china. The background music (though by recordings) is played by GuQin(古琴), an ancient Chinese musical instrument with thousands of years' history. With these around you it is natural to expect a great dining experience. I enjoyed two dishes in my most recent visit. First, Sliced Pork Belly in Garlic Sauce (蒜泥白肉). Carefully sliced, each pork belly piece as thin as around 0.5mm, which allows it to fully absorb the flavor of the garlic sauce. Sliced cucumber is served with bellies to provide fresh and crunchy tastes. However, the garlic sauce let me down a bit. It only contains chili oil and garlic, and the flavor is kind of plain. In classic Sichuan style cooking, the soul of this garlic sauce is a "complex soy sauce(复制酱油)", which is soy sauce re-boiled with brown sugar, spring onion, ginger, and other spices. The "complex soy sauce" is thicker than regular soy sauces and provides a super complex fragrance. I raised this point to the staff and hope they could improve in the future. Compared to the imperfect Sliced Pork Belly, I loved the other dish, La-Zi Chicken (辣子鸡). Small pieces of chicken, usually from wings, drums and thighs are marinated, coated with a thin layer of starch, deep fried, and stir fried a second time with a huge amount of Sichuan pepper and Chili pepper. This dish served here is almost perfect. If there's anything to improve, it must be using a mix of different varieties of chilis while it is a bit difficult given the supply of Chinese chilis here in America. One of my favorite places to eat. The food is so good, portions are big and it is decently priced. I feel like you can't go wrong with any of their dishes. I got their mushroom tofu soup and braised pork for the first time. The mushroom tofu soup has a really clean taste to it, highly recommend as it is a good dish to balance out the more saucy ones like the braised pork. A must get each visit is the Szechuan Numbing Chicken, the sauce in this dish is great mixed into rice. I really enjoyed the Fu-Qi Special which is beef and tripe in peanut chili sauce. I'm not a big veggie person but I loved their stir fried pea shoots and sautéed Chinese long beans with eggplant. Cherry on top is the tea that is served with dining. read more
A solid meal! Without a reservation during peak hours, expect to wait for your table. Even the bathrooms sometimes will have a small line. Ordered several dishes family style, both hot and cold. My favorite was the Swing Pork Belly; I didn't realize they meant it would be brought out as if it were a literal swing! All that was missing was a place to sit. Very fun presentation and tasty as well. A less flashily presented dish that I also loved was the Ma-La Beef. Numbing but flavorful! A dish I wouldn't get again is the Sichuan Numbing Chicken.
