It is a little building on the side of the highway, so don't miss it in passing! All the food looked fresh and inviting. The change of ownership has been such a disappointment. The Summer Kitchen was our favorite sandwich for YEARS. It is a shell of what it once was. Now served on a truly disgusting sub roll that tears your mouth to shreds. The dill in the sauce undetectable. I can no longer recommend this place to friends and family. They seem to be taking on too much and expanding their menu to the point of not doing anything well. No one in our group liked their sandwiches. The price hike is considerable as well. The hype is real! Mother's is an alien shack in the middle of nowhere on the side of highway. The food is EXCELLENT! Call in advance however because they get busy and the lines are long. Great little stop on our way back from Acadia. They have gluten free bread available, which was great for the two of us who cannot have wheat. Everything on the menu was great, and the pastries were also great for those who could have wheat. My brother claims its the best blueberry muffin he's ever had in his life. The turkey is cut thick, not deli meat, and everything was very fresh. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was very cute. They have a few tables outside, but are sometimes short on seating. A lot of people order over the phone and come pickup. Be prepared to wait to order, and wait another 20 minutes for your sandwich to be ready. This is the BEST place to get a sandwich and a yummy dessert. It's not in Bar Harbor, it's actually in Town Hill on 102. Just take the right side of the fork when most people head left. You'll see it after the Organic Home Gardening store. There are over a dozen interesting, fresh sandwiches - something for everyone. The breads are amazing, and everything is tasty and - I'll repeat myself - fresh. The one drawback is the 9 AM to 2 PM schedule, but think that keeps everyone there sane and very friendly. This place made me feel as though I were living in a rich and colorful impressionist painting. There were bees and butterflies dancing around the gardens sucking the nectar out of the sweet flowers. The food here is delicate and delicious, the perfect portion size and the perfect combination of flavors. I got the lightening (smoked Turkey) and asked them to go light on the honey mustard...which THEY DID (not always the case elsewhere!). I got a response from this place today saying they didn't serve me goat cheese that went bad. Something must have accidentally happened then that made the goat cheese I had go bad because I tried to get my boyfriend to take a bite of my sandwich and let me know what he thinks since I hate wasting food but he smelled it and it smelled off to him so he couldn't take a bite of it even though he loves goat cheese like I do. This place said they'll be retraining their employees today on portion sizes since they put really little tomato jam in my sandwich and I appreciate that for other customers but I wish they would also taste their goat cheese often to make sure it's still good. Mother's Kitchen is a small gourmet sandwich shop and catering company. The building is quaint with a sunflower garden (pick your own $1) at the front. There's a wicker love seat out front for catching a few rays. Picnic tables with umbrellas are located out back. The menu is limited but plentiful enough for just about anyone to find something to their liking. During the first visit I had a Humble Farmer with turkey, Havarti dill cheese, cukes, carrots, tomato, lettuce and sprouts with mayo and mustard on wheat bread. It was fresh and delicious. They just happened to have day old lemon walnut cake they sold me at a reduced price. It was moist with a strong lemon flavor. We enjoyed it so much we went again as we were leaving the area. My sister and I split a Grandpa Jacks (Homemade meatloaf, lettuce and Mother's special sauce on toasted sourdough) and Maine Italian (Ham, genoa salami, provolone, cukes, tomato, olives, red onion and capers with vinaigrette on a hard roll). All were absolutely wonderful but the meatloaf on Grandpa Jacks was the most unforgettable. I make a decent meatloaf but it doesn't compare to this thick slice of goodness. We also picked up a potato salad with the right amount of dressing, a hint of dill added flavor without overwhelming, and red onion slices. Nice side. Take time to smell the sunflowers while you enjoy one of the delicious sandwiches offered at this friendly shop. read more
