Please read this if you care about wasting huge amounts of money on food worth maybe $25 Do not let the "cozy local vibe" fool you--this place is a textbook tourist price trap. I just paid an absurd $41 something for two basic breakfast sandwiches and two coffees.They use a pricing model designed by Acadians to completely fleece you at the register. By the time they stack up individual menu prices, basic add-ons, and specialty drinks, your bill instantly hits sit-down restaurant prices for simple counter service. It is pure price gouging aimed at hungry travelers who are in a rush to get to Acadia National Park.The food is fine, but it is absolutely not worth getting ripped off. Mother's Kitchen is a super cute roadside sandwich place. The ambiance is adorable - beautiful landscaping, shade provided, some pianos to play while you wait.... You can tell it's a cute family run place with amazingly friendly staff! I ordered the fanny - lettuce, tomato, cheese on the equivalent of French bread. (So close to a po boy, if from the South). It was warm, carefully wrapped, and very simply tasty. It certainly filled me up the rest of the day! Also, if you use cash, you get a discount! My family had an amazing breakfast here on our way out of Bar Harbor. It's a small family run place, and all the workers are really nice. There is no indoor seating but they have tables set up outside. There are a handful of vegan options, althought it looks like there used to be a lot more in previous years. When we went (summer 2025) the only vegan sandwich was the banh mi. The other vegan option was the overnight oats, which I had and were absolutely delicious. Kid friendly sandwich options as well. Where to start with this oasis of delight? The owners are warm and kind and it shows through the food they serve to their patrons. My boyfriend and I were visiting Acadia for the first time and lucked out that this spot was right down the road. We ate here four different times during the week and also purchased lunch for our hikes. I have been to this fine establishment two times and each time I have ordered and consumed the cold kitchen. The cold kitchen is a thanksgiving sandwich and ohhh what a thanksgiving sandwich it is. It's so much thanksgiving, you can hear the voice of your uncle rambling about the latest conspiracy theory when you place your ear close to the bread. In between the slices of bread is cranberry sauce, Mayo, stuffing and turkey, each of which is the perfect complement for the next. I loved this sandwich so much that I actually ordered two and ate them in one sitting, a true afternoon delight. I also procured other sandwiches for my partner and some friends. They were equally as satisfied with their sandwiches, but since they were vegetarians, they were missing the meat that only Mother's can place into your mouth. We stopped here after canoeing in Acadia as it was recommended by the place. Such a perfect lunch spot! They were sold out of a few sandwiches, but we were super pleased and impressed with the two we got (Fanny Cook and Grand Banker). We also got a marshmallow brownie and that was delicious as well, I have no doubt the other baked goods are just as tasty. You order at a walk up window and the service was pretty quick despite there being quite a few other customers. Highly recommend checking this place out when you're in the area! read more

We hyped this place up based on friends' recommendations and looked at the menu laboriously on the drive over here and were salivating over each and every sandwich description and could barely choose between them, they all sounded so delicious. We ordered five sandwiches here (summer kitchen turkey blt, ham Swiss and coleslaw, mailboat chicken and arugula, steak and horse radish, and the eggplant and tomato jam one) the flavors were just kind of... meh bland. The filling ratio of sauce and contents compared to bread just made each $10 sandwich seem paltry, some of us ate two unsatisfied. I recognize it's borderline impossible to find good crusty French or Italian style rolls here. Cute little stand roadside with lovely handwritten boards, great coffee and drink options, ability for any Sandwich to be made into a salad. Picnic area. No bathroom. But I was expecting a chicken cutlet well seasoned on my mail boat sandwich and I got dry bland chicken, under-sauced with a sprinkle of arugula and didn't care to finish it. Food in Maine is generally fried, under seasoned or haphazardly made. Salt fat acid heat. Garlic, lemon, shallots, onion, Mayo, butter, we'll seasoned meat. Pretty good sandwiches from a small little shop in Bar Harbor. The place was basically next door to where we were staying so we popped by to get takeout lunch. Most of us got the Summer Kitchen sandwiches which were good. Turkey, avocado, lettuce, tomatoes were all fresh tasting and the bacon was cooked fine, although nothing super fancy. It came with a creamy dill dressing/sauce that complimented everything well, not overpowering in flavor at all and enough of it so the sandwich wasn't dry. Couple others in our group got salads and no complaints from them on the meal. If you're in the area, it's worth stopping by. Stopped here on our way out of MDI and it was such a gem, wish we tried it sooner! Great vegan options - the Banh Mi was our favorite, and the Empress was great as well. We also got the Classic Toast (blueberry jam and butter) with no butter to make it vegan; so so good. The matcha with oat milk was also delicious! We were early supporters of Mother's from the very beginning, regularly introducing friends and family to their delectable sandwiches. We have tried to remain loyal after the change in ownership, as there are some really good people working there...BUT what Mother's has become is far from what it once was. Today when I picked up my 'Grandpa Jack' it was unrecognizable to me...for starters it was on a bulky roll of white bread instead of sourdough - no warning in advance that at 12:30 they only had rolls. What was worse is that my memories of having to almost dislocate my jaw to get my mouth around the slabs of meatloaf they used to pack on were shattered today by what looked like meatloaf shavings practically lost in the lettuce and sauce. This was the third time I have visited this season and each time I have been disappointed. I'll cling to those meaty memories; but it's official - I'm no longer a Momma's Boy! read more

This cute little shack made what is quite possibly the best turkey sandwich I've ever had. Skip those protein bars, and just take one of their sandwiches to your hike. I got the "The Grand Banker" (second thing on the menu), and had it on the South Bubble Mountain peak for lunch. It was so good that I passed by Mother's Kitchen again on my last day in Bar Harbor and had it for lunch on the drive back home to New York. I've been trying to recreate the sandwich myself since getting back lol. The thick cut smoked turkey slices are a lot better than the thinly sliced cuts in your average sandwich, and the pesto mayo and brie cheese really put the whole thing over the top. We also tried the "Summer Kitchen" which was pretty good too - can't go wrong with bacon and avocados. The blueberry muffin is good and tastes really fresh, although it is ridiculously large so I'd definitely share that with someone else.
