The following review is based on service only: On the evening of Monday July 17 my Wife and I sat down to have dinner. We have been here a few times for dinner and many times for breakfast. We love their products and enjoy the "downtown Manhattan style" vibe that we now enjoy in Riverdale. That was not to be enjoyed today, today we sat down and then waited with no one approaching our table. There were 3 young ladies working the table area which had only four tables with customers seated. It was not overly busy. After over 20 minutes my Wife caught the a passing eye of one of the ladies and said "excuse me". After that it went down hill. She approached us with what I could only describe as a bad attitude. She said YES? ... my Wife said "I would like to start with a glass? And she just stood there for a few seconds staring at us with her hands crossed at her waist and said YEA! At that point my Wife said no thank we changed our mind and we got up and left. Now I know everyone has a bad day once in awhile but after reading other reviews I see that this is not an isolated event at Moss Cafe. There are a few reviews that comment on subpar service being experienced. I know it's a nice place with great products but I feel this issue should be addressed before it causes harm to your establishment. read more

I was going to a jazz concert nearby and stopped into this café for dinner. My order of a vegetarian burger was absolutely phenomenal. The patty was excellent-not soft/mushy yet it had personality and A very satisfying consistency. Often a burger bun is an afterthought- just something to put a burger on. Not here. It was toasted and complemented the burger perfectly. My buddy had the Moss rice bowl. Based on his lack of conversation and great interest in looking down, It was abundantly obvious that he was thoroughly enjoying his meal. Came here last Sunday as it's been a spot I've wanted to try for some time now. Boyfriend and I ordered an iced coffee and chai latte. It was probably the worst iced coffee I've ever had from a cafe. Instantly regretted it. We did enjoy the chai latte. We ordered the egg sandwich which was really good but not worth the price. It was about $12 for a really small sandwich. Again not worth it. Just also expect a long wait because they did say it was going to take 20 mins but ended up being a 45 min wait. The cashier was also really rude. I took a chance on asking her if their restroom was open and she rudely said no. Which I get ... it's covid but was worth asking since I've seen other establishments open up their restrooms to customers. Aside from the $6.75 double shot cappuccino, don't bother pre-ordering online. You won't get the text notification that your order is ready and they will ask you what you want when you get there. This place is so great. I was skeptical at first because of the extreme hipster-ness of this place. I'm officially in love. The food is great and so health conscious. For someone as carnivorous as I am, I was again extremely skeptical & rolling my eyes at the lack of meat options. But again, I was blown away. I ordered the Open Faced Biscuit + Eggs the first time I came here. Not only was I more than satisfied, I didn't feel sluggish after finishing everything. The marriage between the different flavors and textures of the eggs, cheese, and biscuit were perfect. Wait time wasn't long either. I can't wait to come here for happy hour & dinner. I was in desperate need of a new bakery/cafe so decided to give this one a shot and ordered lunch through Uber Eats. I'm so happy to say that I was lucky to find this place! I ordered the "The Best Ever Focaccia", "Tofu Bahn Mi", and the "Veganized Shakahuka" everything was fresh, tasty and was packaged nicely. My favorite was the Tofu Bahn Mi! I also ordered the honey biscuit and pear cardamom danish and yum yum for both! I just wish they had another location closer but still worth the delivery fees! read more

What a little gem. Came here for lunch on Sunday where it was bustling. Still, we were quickly seated with Stumptown coffee piping hot in just a few minutes. Menus are at the front and change daily. Order at the cashier when you're ready. Also, this place supports the sustainability by getting their food from local farms and a local bakery (Bread Alone). I love a place that helps the local community out! Avocado toast - Now I usually am never impressed with an avocado toast. But THIS avocado toast was hearty. They use large slice of artisan bread and generous amounts of avocado. They could have stopped there but I tasted lemon, pickled onions, za'atar (middle east herb blend of oregano, thyme, etc), and chili flakes for a mild zing. We added a fried egg for an extra $2 - probably better if poached. Carrot coconut soup - A perfect blend of savory goodness. NO overpowering sweetness or coconut flavor. Shakshuka stew (dairy free option) - this moroccan dish takes 20 - 25 min to prepare so I would suggest an alternative dish if you are in a rush. We didn't mind waiting and besides, it shows that the food here is made per order. Unfortunately they forgot the dairy free part so we had to wait another 10-15 min for them to make it properly the 2nd time - hence minus 1 star. Dairy free = no feta and no butter on the bread. The stew comes in an iron skillet, piping hot. It has 2 eggs - again, this is preference but I would have liked to have the eggs more runny. Also had roasted tomatoes, potato, kale, and za'atar. It's quite a thick stew and went well with the sourdough slices. It tastes mild - no overpowering herbs or flavors. Just feel like it was missing something. I liked the kale bits best - they had the most flavor. I imagine the feta cheese would have added more flavor and salt. Something to keep in mind. Vegan applesauce loaf - A free pastry was given as a peace offering for shakshuka order mishap. Perfectly crispy on the outside and moist in the middle. It was ever so slightly sweet but washed down perfectly with the stump town coffee. Overall, fantastic place and I definitely plan to return and try out more menu items! read more

On a recent morning, my wife and I had breakfast here. Although the prices are pretty steep for this area, my Farmer's Scramble looked great. Unfortunately, the toast that came with it was slathered in butter. I brought the waitress back and shared that both for taste and health reasons I didn't want butter on my toast. I asked for a replacement of plain toast. This seemed fair and easy enough. The waitress returned to say that it would be a $1. I paused. Lets face it, on a $16 investment for eggs, the amount itself was not the issue, but rather the principle. Why would I have to pay an extra $1 - get out my wallet, go to the register and fork over a $1 -- all with a now cooling plate of eggs -- when not only would I think this would be of little cost or consequence to the restaurant but also furthermore, while the menu did say sourdough toast, by no means did it say "buttered" or "with butter on it" or anything that might make me believe that I would have to actively refute butters inclusion on my toast. I said this to the waitress and she proceeded to say she would check with the chef. The quick response was "no", its a $1. And furthermore, I should "assume" it had butter on it. This made no sense and I could go on about what other assumptions I should or should not make about a menu when something is not stated. So now I am beyond baffled a restaurant would go so far over a piece of toast to now have an upset customer. I ask for a manager. No one around. The waitress suggests talking to the chef. Which I would have liked to but after several requests for her to come to the front desk and discuss this, she yelled from the back "go away!" My wife is now upset this is even an issue and asks for a refund of the meal because of how unpleasant this has been. I never wanted my money back. I just wanted a piece of toast to come sans butter. Suffice it to say, we got a refund for the eggs, which is fine (and Im sure grounds for being fired by the owner), but all this nonsense would have been solved with a 10 cent piece of bread or, to put it another way, "the customer being even somewhat right". When I wrote an e-mail to the owner, first expressing my appreciation for having such a nice place in the neighborhood, but also telling her of my disappointment at the way I was treated, I got a very curt reply: "Like all good restaurants, we maintain that no list of components is exhaustive. If you know you don't want butter on your toast, please be sure to mention that when ordering. This is industry standard so it would probably be helpful to do this anywhere, not just at Moss." Really? Instead of a simple apology, I get a lesson in food industry policy? I am also not aware of such "industry standards." While no restaurant's list of menu "components," is "exhaustive," an item such as toast with a breakfast order is pretty basic, as far as I'm concerned. I truly hope that Moss Cafe will work. However, in order for it to continue to be successful, I would suggest that the owner and staff provide gracious and courteous customer service, neither of which were extended to me in this incidence and judging from many other reviews, I'm not alone in this view. read more

I enjoyed my meal and will likely return but it is pricey and we had to wait a LONG time for our food. This place's aesthetic is very Brooklynesque/Palm Springs (rustic, white, drift wood, chalkboards, succulents) and the prices match. We had three coffee drinks and three breakfast dishes and our order was $65. I think almost $15 for a bowl of grits with cheese, kale and 2 poached eggs is a bit overpriced but the food was delicious so maybe this is the kind of place I will save as a treat rather than a regular breakfast option. We had to wait over 40 minutes for our food - so while we waited I also purchased a gluten free/dairy free carrot quinoa muffin and it was delicious. With that said, something needs to happen in the kitchen because lots of other patrons were waiting a long time for their food. read more

One of the worst dining experiences I've had in a long while. I am all for locally run businesses that are farm to table. However, the service was terrible, and the food was just ok - certainly not worth the 40 minutes it took for our party to get it. To add insult to injury, almost every dish we ordered was wrong in some way. I'm sure the high ratings for this restaurant are due to the fact that Riverdale is literally and figuratively hungry for more places like this (locally run, non-National chain places). This place is the best thing to happen to Riverdale since I want to say Starbucks - but it is so opposite to what Moss Cafe is- a small locally run business that caters to so many! I have celiac, and am always looking for knowledgeable and conscious places to eat, Moss Cafe is amazing! The food is always fresh, the staff is always courteous, and they always make sure to take extra care to not cross contaminate my food. A lot of reviewers have complained about the coffee but I didn't notice, however I like mine extra light and sweet. Dry pastries -- maybe they were day old or older? Screaming children. No one came and took her orders I guess we go up and order ourselves. $50 for some ricotta cheese on toast, and my wife had an extremely bland salad and two coffees. First, I was disappointed to see they are closed on Saturdays. I understand this is a Jewish owned business but Riverdale is not 100% Jewish. They close at 3pm on Sunday's. This means I can only visit on Sunday mornings... Second, the prices are insane. A 16oz (grande) iced coffee is the largest they offer and costs $5! An egg sandwich was listed at $11!!!! I can buy 2 or 3 dozen organic eggs for that much! Sadly, the unaccommodating hours and extraordinary prices have sent me right back to the big chain across the street. We were a bit nervous about going here for Sunday brunch after reading the mixed reviews, but turns out everything was really great! The cafe is indeed tiny, so if you have a large party with you, definitely keep that in mind. We were 4 people, and a waitress came over right away to help us push together some tables and gather chairs. We ordered the French Toast, Kids Grilled Cheese, Avocado Toast, Porridge, and Shakshuka-- everything was delicious! It definitely took a while to get the food, but they informed us that the shakshuka would take 20 minutes, so it's not as though we weren't warned. This place is way over priced and could care less about customer service. I sent $50 on breakfast and ordered something that didn't taste very good. When I told one of the servers I and was told that there was nothing they could do about it. Any other restaurant would have offered a replacement or substitute in order to maintain good customer service.
