My first time, I was told by a friend. I had the avocado toast with egg. The perfect start, and the cold brew...YUM. You have to go. Going to brunch soon. Oops forgot the service was great. Keep it up you ladies are rock stars... read more

Moss Cafe is a welcomed addition to the neighborhood. It's wonderful to have a hip, modern, easy-going cafe where you can visit with friends, sit and read, etc. So far, I've been twice and have had an overall great experience. I've tried the latte, iced coffee, baked eggs, and granola yogurt. All selections were great, though a bit pricey, especially the iced coffee ($5 for very little coffee!...and no discount on refills!). It seems like $5 would be more reasonable for bottomless, or perhaps they could just make it more affordable. Also, the space feels a little tight. You may bump into a few chairs and/or tables while trying to find your own table or getting up for any reason. Otherwise, this place is great! I hope to return (though the prices will keep me from being a regular). read more

Moss Cafe just does it right. Best cafe in the borough! Fantastic Craft Beer Options, Tea & Coffee is phenomenal. The food is exceptional! Pioneers to the traditional cultural Mom & Pop feel! read more

I've been frequenting Moss Cafe for a few years now and was willing to put up with their steep prices, modest portions, lack of atmosphere, limited table service, and crowds (they pack the tables in so much you're practically sitting knee to knee with the customers on either side of you) because the food is so good. It's kosher, organic, and fresh so I was willing to pay premium price. However after my most recent meal there I'm rethinking being a customer. I ordered the portobello mushroom burger, which supposedly comes with a side of potato salad. When my lunch came the potato salad was minuscule, literally about a teaspoon of it! The woman at the table next to me even joked that you needed a microscope to see it! I said something to the waitress and she got a man to come speak with me, he was either the owner or manager. When I asked for a little more (I was paying 16$ for this) he said he could give me another spoonful but would have to charge me 6$ for a side! Bad business I think to lose a regular customer over a little bit of potato salad! The food is five stars, but when you factor everything else in it's a two. I'm going to go to corner cafe, another kosher restaurant in Riverdale. read more

Great coffee! Just what the neighborhood needed! Very Brooklyn style vibe place, more please!

I have only tried the coffee (excellent!) But I plan on visiting Moss with regularity. It has a beautiful vibe and the food looks divine! I waited so long for a small coffee shop to open in Riverdale, and it has finally arrived :) read more

Never in my life have I written a Yelp review before, and I have never had a worse experience regarding messing up an order. My friend and I were sitting in this establishment for 45 minutes before the staff realized that they did not even put our order in. 6 people had come in and left with food and we had asked the people working here where our order was 4 times. I usually do not do that because I do think it is rude to a certain extent but this was ridiculous. When we inquired about how thy put our order in, they brought us a dish that we did not order. This is when we were informed that our order was not put in at all. I was disappointed to say the least. Despite the fact that I come to this restaurant frequently, I will never come here again. read more

This place is amazing! I recently moved to Riverdale. While I was searching for apartments in the area, I stopped in here for a quick bite and the free wifi to do some more living space hunting. While I was there during the off hours, it's quiet and filled with mostly college students studying. During peak meal time this place gets packed! Their menu is seasonal and always changes. I got a rice bowl which had the most perfect combination of ingredients in it, everything perfectly balanced. Their pastries are fresh and they serve my beloved stomptown coffee. Their staff is very friendly and attentive. Be careful though, some of their best meals run out!! My boyfriend and I came back as residents of Riverdale and ordered two on their meals to split and I was again blown away. How I wish they were open on Saturday so I could swing by to grab brunch after my morning run. read more

Such a calming and inspiring atmosphere, accompanied by tasty food and refreshing coffee. Just perfect!

Just stopped in for breakfast while I was waiting for my car to be serviced. Cute spot with a very relaxed atmosphere. The food was a bit pricey, but delicious!! (Try the moss egg sandwich!) I'll definitely stop by again when I'm in the area. read more

Great coffee! Ale and Sam are the best baristas in NYC......a wonderful place to go if you just want to relax. The food is hit or miss, some dishes are great but some lack flavor and depending on the meal, some portions are really small. I do think it is a one-of-a-kind place especially in the Riverdale area. read more

We had a great impression of Emily and her baked goods when we met her during her Kickstarter campaign. So we felt she was on to something that Riverdale was missing. So we contributed. Oh , did we get that right. The food is unique , the cafe is great and it's a hit! We are so happy for Emily and Alex and delighted with the food , the atmosphere, and how Moss elevates the community. And it's KOSHER ! How cool is that? Have you ever been to Portland ? Well this is of a piece of Portland right here is the borough of the Bronx . Come over and get the experience. read more

What a great cafe and refreshing approach to healthy food and beverages. I had an amazing salad and iced tea. It's appealing to non kosher and kosher consumers alike. Highly recommend! read more

This place is just the best. Seriously, the quality of the food is very high. The preparation is creative but not outlandish. They are serious about ethical sourcing (noting the small farms they work with on the chalkboard). The decor is sweet (minimalist but warm and friendly and bright). And the staff are kind and helpful. I typically have a "bowl" (grain + vegetable + protein + sauce) and some kind of baked good (usually a cookie). Both are ALWAYS delicious. I typically run into friends here but can totally sip a tea solo with a book for a couple hours. It's friendly like that. What a neighborhood gem - I'm grateful this place exists! read more

Nice place great food, great coffee if a tad overpriced. What upset me is that the staff behind the counter is extremely rude. what ever happened to the "customer is always right". read more

WAY too expensive for what you're getting, based on portion size and rather uninspired flavor. It was very crowded, so I guess other people don't have a problem with it. Definitely Manhattan prices and Manhattan noise. I'd visit other local establishments before this one. read more

I chose to stop here for a coffee after I've read positive reviews. Sometimes they don't meet the expectations, but this time I definitely enjoyed the place. Good ice coffee and pastry. read more

I have been here several times because I really love to support local and appreciate their business concept. However, sadly I have never had a good experience here. Coffee tastes unusually tart and is way overpriced. Their overall prices of food, pastries and coffee are really high. People are always whining about the prices and the Owner attempts to explain that it's due to everything being locally sourced. However, paying $6 for a small piece of pastry seems very unreasonable. The staff at the counter seems friendly most of the time but be advised that the service is very slow. There's something about the vibe here that I never feel relaxed nor welcome. I wanted to make it my neighborhood go to place but I gave up on that after 5 fair visits and will need to make my way back to my local Starbucks. My last trip here was the last straw. I had a friend visiting from out of town and I had talked it up to her telling her how cute the design of the place was so I arranged for us to meet there for coffee. We ordered two coffees to stay. I asked them to please put mine in a to-go cup because it's more comfortable for me and the coffee stays hot longer. We stood there for a while and ordered several small pastries during our time there. After an hour of talking we decided to get more coffee so my friend goes to get us another cup. The cashier tells my friend that she could only offer the $3.00 coffee refill rate to her because she had hers in a mug but that she would have to charge me as if I were getting a brand new cup of coffee because I had gotten mine in a to-go cup! Whaaaaaaaattt?! My friend was baffled and proceeded to explain that we both had our coffees in the coffee shop and we didn't "go" anywhere but she said that while she understood and agreed with our reasoning, that was the owner's policy and she couldn't do anything to change that. So she paid another $9.00 for a coffee and a refill. My friend is a Medical Engineer and I a Corporate Lawyer (and business owner) so it definitely wasn't about the money but rather just how asinine the whole thing was. To sit there and actually charge a customer that had already spent over $50 (+ tip) on just 2 coffees and a couple pastries to support your business is ridiculous and just plain distasteful and bad customer service. Your overcharge of $3.00 ended up costing you a potential loyal customer and future business. Needless to say they didn't make the impression I was hoping for -- will not be returning. Still wish the business much luck in the neighborhood. Overall: FOOD: Menu had nice fresh options but never tried the food. PASTRIES: Dry COFFEE: Tart and VERY small cups. SERVICE: Slow AMBIANCE: Not diverse nor welcoming DECOR: Nice and rustic PRICES: High OUTDOOR SEATING: 2 cute patio tables available HOURS: very limited read more

I came here from out of town before heading out to the airport with excitement from reading the reviews and website about locally sourced food. I've lived in Eugene, OR and Santa Fe, NM where this kind of vegie, locally sourced food is abundant and wonderful. It was just after 5pm and it was empty except for someone at the counter whose transaction seemed to linger on. There were no menus by the sign that said "Menus" and finally after a long time the waitress made eye contact and told me I could sit down for service. It was unclear if there was wait staff or if you ordered at the Counter. The waitress was fine, but not overly friendly or timely throughout my time at the restaurant. I ordered a simple salad and thought I would get it quickly as I was the first person in for the dinner hour. I kept looking back at the waitresses and kitchen as more and more time passed, but they paid me no mind. After a long time someone came to pick up a to-go order and after waiting 5 or 10 minutes they finally brought him 3 large bags. I realized that this might have been the cause for the slow-down, but he waited for a long time before another bag emerged from the back. I still didn't have my salad and 4 or 5 other parties had come in and ordered. By the time I got my salad, folks who had come in way after me also promptly received their food. The problem was they brought me the wrong salad. I was getting nervous about being late for my flight. Finally I got the right salad and really folks, it was completely pedestrian, nothing to write home about. If this is as good as NY gets for home grown, organic, locally sourced food, you guys are in trouble! It was plain boring, not much in the way of succulent greens or seeds as advertised and not a large portion, and was without a freshly baked slice of bread...it was frankly terrible! When she brought the bill it was on an i-Pad with the choices for tip of 15 or 20 %, just more obnoxious icing on the cake. I should have hit no tip, but I didn't because she was standing over me, looking at what button I was pressing and I'm ashamed to admit I caved to the peer pressure. This place is WAY overpriced. The previous night I had a fabulous Caribbean meal at Ripe Kitchen and Bar - an amazing whole fish in a delectable coconut sauce with rice that filled me to the gills and for the same price as this paltry salad. I'll go back there but not to this overpriced hole-in the wall. read more

Went in and saw quite the crowd. Ordered for for two to go and was told it would be ready in fifteen minutes. Left the store and came back fifteen minutes later and was told it would be another fifteen minutes. Well after an hour the food was finally ready. Food itself was good large portions, unjustifiable wait time, be honest about the wait time upfront in the future. read more

Why is anyone paying this much money for adequate vegetarian food?! My wife and I have been a couple of times, and the food is average to decent at best. Riverdale's lack of vegetarian options, and lack of good restaurants overall, coupled with the occasional need to order out and proximity is the only thing that brings us back. But $16 for a tight little veggie Reuben and an insulting smear of mediocre potato salad is insane. What is crazier is how busy the place is despite it all. Maybe the average Joe in Riverdale has more money to throw away at a sub par meal than this guy does. read more

Awesome little cafe. Delicious locally-sourced healthy food and really friendly staff. Tastes like it came straight from the farm.

Moss cafe is one of those Gems you're happy to have around. Riverdale is a very old neighborhood that has what it has, everything here is great. So, when something new opens up you hope it lives up to par and represents this amazing neighborhood, and Moss Cafe does just that. Service is great, the food is delicious. I have a bit of a sweet tooth and love pastries fortunately, they have a great variety of classic cafe pastries and DELICIOUS vegan ones. Seriously, the vegan treats are amazing. read more

Adorable place, tight space but delicious food. Fish chowder was excellent, filling and flavorful with chunks of fish a variety of vegetables and seasoned w fresh cilantro leaves. The moss salad is popular for good reason, it's really good. The portobello burger was grilled portobello with a medley of accompaniments all contributing to great tasting bites. I loved the slaw, aoli and onion and the sesame bun was fresh and crisp, definitely worth the calories. I really get the mindset of slow food, locally sourced, sustainable and healthy and applaud this establishment for delivering such wholesomeness. And...it's kosher and you can have a decent glass of wine or beer. Impressive! read more

The food here is very good and the place is adorable. I give 3 stars because the prices are completely outrageous. I had a small bowl of vegetarian chili and it came to $19.60 (I didn't even order a drink). It's highway robbery and they get away with it because the kosher clientele don't have much of a choice. The avocado toast is delicious but it's $20 for toast and a coffee. That's ludicrous and I wouldn't even pay that on the Lower East Side let alone Riverdale. I hope they will reconsider the prices so I can continue to support their business. read more

The best way to start your morning is with Moss. Amazing blends of coffee , fresh food and great service.

So fun! Great atmosphere/ decor, tasty and healthy food. Went at lunchtime on Memorial Day, so it was really busy. My biscuit & eggs were super comfort food, and I definitely recommend trying the cucumber mint lemonade! read more

I ordered three salads to go to bite into a mouthful of sand in the lettuce; when I returned the food, instead of receiving an apology, the owner lectured me rudely for 10 minutes on how it was impossible and I must be mistaken. As a chef by profession, the owner has a lot to learn about customer service and understanding feedback. My original intent was return to the food, get a refund, and try it again another day (we have ordered in the past), but after the condescending message, denial of any wrongdoing, and insistence that I could not discern between coarse salt and dirt, I will never go back and will encourage neighbors and friends to do the same. Also, I bought a scone for my son that was marked $4.50 and was charged $5 instead--I didn't say anything and paid the $5, but told the owner when I returned the food to prove mistakes happen and can easily be corrected. read more

The atmosphere and everything about this cafe is perfect! I really enjoyed the food and my time at this cafe.

I really wanted to like it because it's just around the corner ... but it just wasn't worth it. Coffee was good but my french toast wasn't great at all, neither was my husband's bfast sandwich and the tables were uncomfortable. The whole thing about paying at the counter and seating yourself (while you pay gratuity at the counter!) was a bit meh since service was average and the prices are quite high for what they offer. read more

Nice little place - tiny really but with good, fresh food, pleasant service and both coffee and alcohol! Reasonably priced, kosher - so closed Fri evening and Saturday. No meat but has fish on the dinner menu. Has a few outdoor tables that are a plus as is free parking in the lot 1 door down. Would give 5 stars if it was less crowded and more upscale but plan to return to try the late day menu... read more

Great much needed new little kosher cafe in Riverdale. The scones were huge. The cheddar cheese could have been a bit moister, but the fruit ones were tasty. The coffee was fabulous. They are doing a great business and deserve to as they have the cleanest cheeriest place in Riverdale, with the best breakfast brunch. I look forward to returning for lunch and dinner. read more

Came here today for the first time for Sunday brunch. The vibe is sweet (Riverdale magically translated to Portland, Oregon). Charming decor and nice people, but it took more than 45 minutes to receive a single order of shakshuka to share. A server told us the cook was "incredibly busy" and was cranking out food as fast as she could. We will probably go back, but this extremely long wait seemed rather excessive for some baked (and over-cooked) eggs and veggies in a little cast-iron skillet. My husband works in a popular Manhattan restaurant with more than 300 seats, and no one ever has to wait this long for their food. read more
