I've been going to Moshi Moshi for over 3 years and I'm always happy with my results when I leave the salon. I don't have one particular stylist because my haircut is pretty simple. I would say it is on the more expensive side but I only go a few times a year and I'm happy to pay a bit more for quality and to support a local business. I appreciate that they keep notes about what I have asked for in the past and what I like. The location in Golden Belt is a bit tucked away but you can always ask the security guard. The studio itself is small and funky. During COVID it was only one client at a time because the studio is so small and they are still keeping with mask requirements which I appreciate. I would say the only downside is that parking has gotten crazy in Golden Belt with so many new businesses moving in that it can be hard to find a spot especially during lunch time. You might consider grabbing a spot on Morning Glory instead of trying to park in the Golden Belt lot. read more

I had "Pandemic Hair" meaning I had not had a professional haircut since January of 2020. My husband cut a few inches off in the interim, but it was long and unmanageable. So, when I complimented a neighbor on her haircut she referred me to Mary at Moshi Moshi and I am so happy she did. I was concerned about going back to my pre-pandemic short haircut since we were new to Durham and I didn't know any hairdressers here. I am very happy I took the leap. Mary was excellent and I feel so light and cool with my short hair again. Because I am immunocompromised, I greatly appreciated the steps Mary took to protect me; she met me outside, wore a mask as I did, and there were no other customers around my chair. I felt very safe! I've been getting my hair cut at Moshi Moshi since it opened decades ago. I love all the stylists here and would never go anywhere else.

My entire family - including my two teenage sons who have difficult hair - frequent this hair salon (my wife goes to Chapel Hill). Macail is my stylist and she is great and fun to talk to. Glo is my boys' stylist and they love her, and she does wonders with their difficult hair. It's expensive (and even more expensive when you have to multiply it by 4 - christ I just did the math, it's ugly on an annual basis). But it's locally owned and in a great part of town and I don't buy clothes anymore anyway so I might as well have a good haircut. read more

Decided to schedule a much-needed haircut appointment after my lash aesthetician told me how much she loved her stylist at Moshi Moshi. It was a little hard for me to find the entrance, because I didn't realize it was hidden within the Golden Belt campus. However, walking inside, I tingled with joy when I noticed how cute the salon is! I was set up with Glo, who did such a professional and thorough job chopping all my dead and split ends! Given COVID, I chose to come with my hair freshly washed and dried. I told Glo that at minimum, I wanted to keep as much length as I could. She then suggested shorter, face-framing layers in the front to add more volume and dimension to my hair. After cutting, she also introduced me to a hot air brush, which I think made a transformative difference in my new hair. For $53 (plus tip), I was extremely happy with my experience here. Who knows? It is with RESERVATION I would put myself in the hands of the hairdresser at this salon. The hairdresser cut layers in my hair and the cut was uneven in the fronting a highly visible place, although I was emphatic I did not want layers. I have since gone elsewhere, and was told it will take approximately 2 years to grow out. I regret not standing up and walking out prior to the haircut. The hairdresser was not gentle and made insulting comments attributing the condition of my hair to the pandemic. The hairdresser obviously lacks listening and dexterity skills. Moshi Moshi opened up a new location in Durham, and you get the same great people and same great atmosphere with it! Color me excited! I visited their new location in Durham last week to get my brows done by Tara - who is the ONLY person in the triangle who gets to touch my face with hot wax. I figured it was a good opportunity to check out the place, since my brows were totally gnarly. They carried over some of the decor from the Chapel Hill salon, and have a few gift items as well as beauty items available at this location as well. The space itself is very Durham - red brick, with that renovated look to it. The space looks a lot roomier than their space in Chapel Hill, so everyone has more room to breathe and work their hair magic. Golden Belt is right off the Durham Freeway, so you get easy access that way... and my favorite part? Parking is easy! There is a lot right next to the shop. If its your first time going to Golden Belt, i recommend getting there a little early so you can check out all it has to offer. Coffee shops, art galleries and now hair salons? I have been getting hair cuts and color at this salon for over two years. I have worked with three different stylists and my hair turns out very well every time. Every. Time. I really appreciate this consistency. The stylists do a great job really listening to their client's vision and helping to create a realistic plan that comes out looking great. I appreciate that they offer a touch-up color option (they call it a drive through) that is heavily discounted compared to a regular color appointment. The admin staff is very friendly and nice to interact with. The only things holding this review back from a five star are: 1) I don't really like having the styling portion of the appointment completed by an apprentice. When I schedule a service with a stylist, I like knowing that they will do the entire service. At Moshi Moshi, you never know who will be finishing up with the wash and blow dry. Usually it turns out fine, but it makes me feel a bit like being part of an assembly line. 2) Drive through color aside, it's a bit pricey. That being said, it's a high-rent area, and the salon is beautiful and a pleasant place to be, and the stylists are experienced and well-trained, so I keep coming back, but this underscores even more why I comment on issue 1). read more

I have been using Moshi Moshi for quite many years (5+). The stylists are great. My main problem is with the management and the service. Over the years I found the quality of service has decreased a lot. Bang trim was used to be free and now it costs $15 and it requires an appointment on the same day. It has become more expensive but less flexible. It is making very difficult for loyal customers to stay committed. The website for making an appointment has also changed frequently so it becomes a hustle to make an appointment online. I have tried a few times to make an appointment but the password reset link just could not get to work. Do not change the things that work well. read more

I so wanted to like this place and gave them multiple opportunities to impress me. I contacted the owner, Catlin, for a consultation because she specializes in curly cuts. After speaking with her about what I wanted, turns out my hair is not curly enough to qualify for a 'curly cut' but she assured me she could maximize what curl I did have with a cute bob style with lots of texture. I come to the appointment and things seem to be going well until the very end. She cuts some layers at the base of the cut but does nothing to texturize my hair. She then lops off one piece in the front because it won't "conform"? OK. I go home and have hair absolutely all over me so have to shower. I try to style like I normally would and the ends are so heavy, my natural curl has completely disappeared. And the sides were completely uneven. What the heck? I suffer through a very important work conference agonizing over my hair. I call for a recut and the owner is booked so I get an appointment with someone else. This is so not OK. If you screw up a haircut, make time in your schedule to fix it, don't push the responsibility off on someone else. The day of the recut, the stylist is sick - so on to recut appointment number two - with a different stylist. I finally have my appointment at 930 am and the girl, Risa, is running 30 min late...really? I mean they open at 9 for Pete's sake. I explain exactly what I want her to do, that I am trying to grow out my bangs and I don't want length taken off but it needs some thinning and texture. She seems to understand and it looks OK when I leave. After washing and styling it myself, it looks like she took a weed whacker to my hair. Uneven sides (now it is the other side), still really heavy and whacked ends and several inches off the front...ARGH!!! Never going back...worst haircut experience ever. read more

I went here to get ombré from blonde to light blue and when I went for my consultation I was told it would be possible but it would take several processes. The first process was a "lightening" process which I later learned was completely unnecessary since my hair is so light to begin with. I paid a $160 for my hair to look exactly the same. The next day I went in for the blue which ended up coming out more like heather grey than anything. I spent a total of $235 for my hair to look awful. Also when the girl blow dried my hair she got the brush stuck in it twice! Over all the people were all nice but as far as the color it was pretty poor. read more

I've made the trip out here to Durham from Carrboro to get my hair cut by Mary several times now, and have had fairly good experiences. The first time I got my hair cut by Mary, it was spectacular. I had these long, swooping bangs and subtle highlights that I just LOVED. After she went to the Durham location only, I tried one of the other stylists in Chapel Hill, but was not as satisfied. The other girl screwed up my perfectly sculpted, long bangs that Mary had done, and it was just never the same after that :( So I went back to Mary a couple more times, hoping to get the perfect bangs again, but alas, it was not to be. We had a miscommunication once where I ended up with bangs shorter than I wanted, and the second time I went, they were...well, longer than I wanted. The shorter bangs still looked GREAT, and grew out nicely, but just not my personal preference. It was the Summer of Sweaty Bangs. If someone asks me again if I want to be able to tuck my bangs behind my ears, I will say yes instead. Aside from the weird bang issues, though, I was pretty pleased with how the rest of my curly hair turned out. So girls with curly hair, you are safe in Mary's hands :) I do go to the Chapel Hill location still to get my roots retouched with "drive-through color" - it's $25 instead of the full price for color, which is great. I drove all the way from Greensboro to get my hair cut, because a friend recommended the cuts. I got stuck in traffic, and called 20 min before my appt. to say I was moving slowly. I called closer to the appt. time to say I was still trying to get there, and a VERY COLD receptionist said, "We have a 15-minute window." My GPS said I'd get there 20 minutes late, but they wouldn't give me that extra 5 minutes despite the fact that I had driven 50 miles. If they'd been KIND about it, or remotely understanding, I'd have understood the policy--I don't wish to make others wait for me. But they were so rude that I will not only never go there again, but I also blogged about it to my 2,800 readers. They should learn to be gracious to people when life happens. read more

Just an overall wonderful experience. As previous reviews have said before, curly girls are in good hands with Mary. As a recent Durham transplant, this is the first time I've had my cut since moving from Milwaukee and I can't wait to come back. Mary cut more than 14 inches of curly curly hair and I couldn't have felt more relaxed. On top of that, she did a great job coloring my hair. Mary is the best ever! She's overseen my hair from short bob to long layers, and from long swoopy bangs to full-on eyebrow-skimming bangs. Every single haircut has always looked amazing, and she provides complimentary bang trims, too. The best aspect is the communication. I'm one of those people that has a general idea of what I like and dislike, but I'm not good with specifics. So I go in saying, "My hair feels heavy," or "I want bangs!" and Mary totally understands my vague directions and can turn them into a haircut that I love. I trust her vision, and she's never disappointed. Also, love their online booking system. It gives me the flexibility to book a haircut whenever I want, without the pressure of someone on the other end of the phone. FANTASTIC. I am currently in love with this place. I got the Japanese moisture treatment, a flat iron and trim. Jess was my stylist and she was absolutely amazing. Aside from being a doll and awesome to talk to, she managed to get my big poofy hair STRAIGHT and trimmed off split ends without cutting off much length at all (a big fear of mine). She was fantastic with my big curly hair, didn't seem intimated or annoyed with how much hair I had (like salons in the past) and gave me some great tips for future maintenance. The salon itself had a great atmosphere and the place made me feel happy and girly just upon walking in. My hair feels great after the treatment and they gave me weekly conditioner to help with future maintenance. I definitely will be returning to see Jess for as long as I'm in the area! read more

I have been here three times and wanted to like it and be a regular. The first two haircuts were ok but the last one the back of my hair was thinned out in a way that made it very prone to tangling. It was not cut in manageable layers but instead seemed to have inconsistent short strands in the midst which led to tangling. I can understand if a stylist has a different vision than i do and executes it well but this seemed like a stylist with poor technique, noone wants tangled hair read more

I've been living in Durham for about a year since my move from Los Angeles and had been reluctant to getting my hair done in the area because I know how difficult it can be to find someone that gets your vision and hair type off the bat. I ended up making an appointment at Moshi Moshi since it had pretty great reviews and the concept seemed fun and modern. When I first called, I told the receptionist I didn't care how long I had to wait, but I wanted her to get me an appointment with someone that was well experienced with ombrés or balayage because that's what I currently had going on. My first impression of the staff there was kind of worrisome because almost all the stylists had that very natural, asymmetric, messy bed head type of hair and that's totally not my style. I prefer the more groomed and polished look. I proceeded to meet Meredith, my stylist and explained to her exactly what my vision was........ I'm usually very exact about what I want and it was just a continuation of the same color I already had...how tough can that be? She then went on to explain how she was going to color my hair and used a lot of hair salon jargon that I honestly didn't get, but I let her know that as long as she gives me what I wanted then she could go about it in whatever way she deemed best. Meredith was very nice throughout my entire time there. I was a little alarmed that she put me under heat because a previous stylist of mine had warned me about being put under heat, but I still was trying to give her the benefit of the doubt and I went under the lamp anyway. I was her last appointment and because I have a lot of hair, I think she realized it was going to take longer than perhaps the time they had allotted for me. When she blow dried my hair I noticed the blond pieces at the top did not match the blond I had on the bottom, she gave me more of a brown caramel color than a blond (just seemed like she had done low lights on me instead of highlights)...but overall bearable. My blow dry was quite horrible because I have really thick/wavy/frizzy hair and unless you know how to work with my hair type or do great blow dry jobs, then my hair usually needs some sort of heated tool to tame out the frizz and give me more of that smooth shiny look I like. I walked out of there looking like I had been electrocuted, but didn't say anything because I could tell she wanted to call it a night. I've rarely walked out of a salon feeling like I had to get home and style my own hair again, but this time, it's the first thing I did when I got home. I didn't have any plans to go out, or else I probably would have mentioned something to her at the salon. I already knew the color didn't match the blond highlighted parts that I previously had in my hair, so I wasn't very happy about that especially because I paid $195 (w/tip) for it......but I knew I didn't want to process my hair any further, so I came to terms that I would leave the color as is. Because I have dark brown hair, I know it can be difficult to get my hair to that nice beige blond that my stylist in CA knows is that i realized she failed to give me overall highlights and had only done the top portion of my head. So I decided to call the salon back in hopes of getting this rectified. When I returned, Meredith asks what I didn't like about the results. I didn't even mention my displeasement with the color, but I did tell her I was unhappy that I didn't get a full head of highlights as I had asked for. She said that when she had explained to me how she was going to color my hair, she had mentioned that " light doesn't reflect from bottom up" or something like that, but at the time I didn't realize that was her way of telling me in hair stylist jargon that she was not going to highlight the bottom part of my head. In short, Meredith let me know that because I had agreed to her explanation, she was not liable for what occurred. I grew upset at her comment because if she intended not to highlight the bottom half of my head, she should have just plainly stated it in a way the customer understands. She also said I would have to pay to get the bottom half of my head highlighted because she was not responsible for the misunderstanding. I asked her why did she not highlight my bottom half when I had clearly expressed I wanted it to be highlighted? She said it was not in her "vision of how my hair was supposed to look"!! First of all, I thought it was my vision that mattered, not her's, and the stylist gets paid to execute my vision---NOT her vision! I went ahead and paid for the fix up that ended up looking like copper/red highlights instead of caramel or blond. Super upset at how this all turned out, it could have been handled in a much more professional way, but it was not! Never returning back and I will not recommend any of my Duke classmates or hospital coworkers to come to this place. Perhaps they give great haircuts? read more

My first try getting haircut in the Triangle after moving here from NYC, and it was just ok. Moshi Moshi has a great vibe and Amber was very nice, but the cut she gave me wasn't particularly stylish. I went in for a trim to a trendy, perfectly-layered bob I got from my stylist of several years in Brooklyn, and it ended up way too suburban Raleigh. My split ends are gone, but otherwise my hair feels as un-styled as before it was cut. In addition, I was a little put off by the listing of stylists on the salon's website, which lists a bunch of trivia insignificant to hair styling that seems like excessive effort at seeming cool. I want to know about a stylist professionally - his or her training, areas of expertise, and what they do to learn new techniques and trends - than their favorite swear word. read more

I didn't have my hair done here so I can't speak to their abilities, but based on my experience, I would not recommend this to anyone I care about! I awkwardly stood there as the woman I was having a consult with was ignored by another hair colorist/stylist Micail. Also, they don't do any "creative hair colors" which means if it isn't a naturally occurring hair color for your race then they won't do the hair color for you. read more

Got a haircut from Micail in Durham and I loved it! The place is really cute. The atmosphere is great - colorful, relaxing, and bright. It was a little hard to find but once I got there, there was ample parking. Prices are reasonable, although they ended up charging me $5 more than they originally told me it would be on the phone. Micail did an excellent job with my haircut. She was thorough and careful and definitely did more work than I expected to make sure that my cut looked good and looked how I wanted it. My hair is really thick and sometimes hairstylists struggle with that but she did a REALLY good job and I got one of the best haircuts I've gotten in years (which is saying something because I just moved from Houston and used to go to a really big, established salon in the Galleria there). I brought a picture and Micail did a really good job of taking my preferences into account while explaining how the cut would look a little different in my hair than in the picture. I also got bangs for the first time in a couple years and she told me if the bangs didn't turn out how I wanted after letting them settle for a few days, I could come back in to get them fixed any time. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that the receptionist was not that friendly (I think because my haircut took a little longer than expected and it cut into her lunch break...). Also, they don't take Discover Card which put me in an awkward situation, because I was able to get cash from their ATM to pay for the haircut, but didn't have the right change to leave an appropriate tip. All in all, will definitely go back for my next haircut with Micail! Already recommended this place to another friend who was looking for somewhere to get a haircut, and I'll also recommend it to any other friends at Duke who are looking for a salon. read more

SO, this review is sort of biased but I think it's necessary. Moshi Moshi is the only salon that I will go to for my styling needs. This is because of Alissa. She is the only person who has ever successfully cut my hair. I have part wavy, part straight, thick, crazy hair, with a section of inexplicably course and frizzy hair in the back.
