Really great service! I signed up for a Curly Cut with Caitlin and she took time at the beginning to hear what I wanted and look at my hair. She decided that since my hair was fairly fine/looser curls it would be ok to just to a normal wet cut (and actually ended up charging just for the normal cut - very nice of her) They have allll the COVID safety protocols (air purifier, shower curtain dividers between sinks, temp checks, masking, etc.) and I felt very safe as a public health professional myself. From my straight-forward long, straight haircut; to a Lisa Rinna/Cheryl Burke short, swingy crop; to Victoria Beckham's graduated bob; to a loose spiral perm; to growing my hair out for my wedding; and now sporting bangs, Catlin has seen me through so many hairstyles and ALL of them have been cute. I've had people stop me on the street to ask me where I get my hair done! She will tell me if I bring in a photo that won't work for my hair, rather than try to recreate something that won't be easy to maintain. I can also trust her to take the reins when I'm not quite sure what I want. Catlin also handles my haircolor, which she was able to bring back to a natural hue with subtle highlights. I have had appointments with a few of the other gals (when Cat was unavailable and I needed something done before vacay/business/etc), and while they too are talented, I didn't get quite same magic. During the consultation I explained to stylist in detail what I wanted to be done and what I specifically did not want to be done to my hair. I was extremely specific with my request. She completed disregarded my request and began cutting. I did not confront her because I was concerned she would retaliate and give me a more drastic cut. I found her impatient, arrogant, and intimidating. In retrospect, I strongly regret not standing up and walking out. I have very fine hair. I love this place!! I've been getting my hair cut by Catlin for years. She is so fast and fantastic with my curly hair--I have never had a cut from her that I disliked. I was super sad when I moved away and had to find a new hairdresser for a couple years. No one did as good of a job as her. So I'm really glad to be back in the area :) The salon is also really adorable with fun, fresh decorations and a great location on franklin street. I really appreciate their online booking site as well. It's helpful to book quite a ways in advance as Catlin's appointments fill up quickly! The online booking is fast and easy. I've had a few good haircuts here, but also a particularly traumatic hair color experience. The owner of the salon was incredibly rude and disrespectful to me and way out of bounds with some comments. When I told them that the color looked nothing like the photograph I had brought in, both my stylist and owner tried to convince me that my hair was what I had asked for instead of fixing it. I had to go to another hair salon to fix the mess. The other salon was amazed at the difference between the picture I brought in and the color I received. My hair was fixed, but the comments that the owner said to me never will be. I've never been treated that way before. Moshi Moshi never refunded my money. This is not the way to treat an unsatisfied customer. The receptionist is always rude - - I think they're trying to create some kind of atmosphere with that. I'd recommend going elsewhere. read more

I hesitate to write this because I do like this place and continue to go. However, my first impressions were not very good. When I called to make my first appointment the receptionist was very short and unhelpful in discussing their stylists experience for what would work best for me. They do not have a website or anywhere else to find this information. So I set up my appointment and overall my first cut was pretty good, I decided to go back next time to give it another shot. In making an appointment for my next visit I asked for the first stylist I had and her next available appointment, which the receptionist replied that they had an opening that afternoon so I took it. This appointment was NOT with the stylist I requested. I should have just rescheduled but for some reason I thought this would be rude and went ahead. It was one of the worst salon experiences I've ever had. I didn't get along with the stylist and she didn't even try to understand what I wanted. I left feeling very angry and frustrated all around. So after an appointment back with my much missed stylist in my previous city, I tried to figure out where else to go. However, I couldn't decide where else to try and wanted to give the first stylist I visited here another shot. So I once again made an appointment with the rather rude and short receptionist but actually got the stylist I wanted. Apparently 3rd times a charm because I walked out very happy and loving my new hairdresser. I plan on sticking with Mary for the rest of my time here in Chapel Hill. Overall-- I like this place. They have good products and the salon is really cute. I DO NOT like their receptionists. I have yet to have a good or even comfortable experience with them. Out of the two "cool" hair places in Chapel Hill (Syd's and Moshi Moshi) I think Syd's is the better choice. That being said, I am basing my review off of one haircut experience at Moshi Moshi and three or four at Syd's so feel free to take this with a grain of salt. The shop itself is nice, very clean and cute. Trendy. Unfortunately, I had one of those "told the stylist I was growing my hair out and left with a weird short mullet" experiences. This is really a pet peeve. I had just spent a summer working outside in Maine and my hair was all long and happy and healthy. I left Moshi Moshi and my hair was sad and limp and layered and roughly four inches shorter. All I wanted was bangs and a trim. This place is super cute. You walk in to a salon with lots of Japanese themed eye candy, random vintage inspired decorations, hair, skin and makeup producs, toys, bags, cameras.. you name it! It not only has the cute factor of the type of stuff you'd see in a Japanese specialty store, but it also has the coolness vibe of an independent, trendy salon. The bonus? You can book your appointments online - I love being able to browse a schedule and book at my leisure. I initially came here looking for a good eyebrow wax. I'd been looking for a good place (and asked some Yelpers) and came across this place with its proximity to home and glowing reviews. I was worked on by Tara, and she does a great job! She has a great "bedside manner," great music playing on the ipod at all times, and does a fantastic job managing my brows. Oh, and I love the waxing/spa room. It has the look of a sauna, and smells really good. My second visit was a cleanup on the wax, and a haircut done by Mary, who did a great job translating my "um, I kind of want to add some layers and maybe make it cooler?" comment into something great. I've gone to Moshi Moshi for 3 years, and its a pretty nice place, but there are some drawbacks. Originally I had gone to Catlin, who also owns the shop. Shes a very experienced hair stylist, and always did a great job. I've gotten cuts and highlights from her, and both were very good. Maybe not much room for feedback while she is working, but I trust her! When Catlin had her baby, I switched to Karen... who often seemed really rushed, and basically gave me the same cut no matter what I asked for. Maybe if I was more vocal about having input in my haircut, or not having all day to wait, it would work out better -- not all personalities are a great match! Long story short? Catlin is great, its a cool place, but different stylists have different styles! It can be a little pricey for their cuts, but their color & highlights are really reasonable (mostly cheaper than similar salons). I went to Moshi Moshi to have my hair trimmed during a particularly busy time in the semester when I couldn't make it over to Raleigh to see my usual stylist, Lorrie Mizelle at Cutting Edge. I explained to the stylist that 1) I already liked the shape 2) the length was fine, I just needed a trim, particularly my bangs and 3) razor cutting my hair is not ok. This is when I should explain that I was wearing my glasses that day, which she asked me to remove, so that she could better see how my hair fell around my face, which is pretty normal. Well, guys, she took about an inch off (which is a lot with a bob), completely changed the shape, and then proceeded the razor my hair into submission. I cried on my walk back to the car. I will say that she did fix one problem I had expressed: my hair loves to do a flip at the back of my neck when it's short, and she did manage to cut it so that it laid flat, a feat no one before or since has been able to achieve. But over all, I don't think I will be back, despite how cute the interior was. read more

In this case, Moshi Moshi means "good-bye." I came here quite a few months ago and got mediocre service. The website says men's haircuts are $30 ("and up"...meaning they are not $30) and I got charged $40 because I happened to get cut by someone high on the scale (the owner?). Anyway, if it had been a great cut, I wouldn't have been upset, but she worked on me for 20-25 minutes, totally ignored me the whole time to talk to other clients, and charged $40. I can go to SuperCuts for $15 for the SAME CUT, but that's what I wanted to get away from in the first place! Just go to Aveda for BETTER cuts at more than HALF the price! read more

Moshi Moshi may look unbearably fluffy and cute from the outside, but don't let the decorating job scare you away. I came here based on the other Yelp reviews because I was getting 12 inches taken off (I do this whenever I can), and I wanted the cut to be a good one. Karen not only spent time before one of her other appointments to talk over potential hairstyles for me, but she also stayed late (on a Friday!) to make sure my amazingly cute bob cut was perfect. She even made some different styling suggestions as she was finishing up. I've gotten cuts in many places (Chicago, SF, New York) and I think the stylists' attention to detail here is on par with the best of any big city salon. If you like the snobbery of super-chic salons, I would go somewhere else. If you want a low-stress, attentive cut, Moshi Moshi is the place to go. read more

I love moshi moshi! I was in dire need of a haircut in the triangle area and Moshi Moshi seemed nice and not too expensive. I did the online booking and was randomly set up with Jess. When it came time for my appointment, I made it to the cute salon on Franklin quite easily. The only problem is parking - you have to find something on the street, and it's not free til after 5pm. There is a nice girl that checks you in and manages the cash register/booking appointments. I waited for only a short while in the front. The salon itself is adorable and has a cutesy Japanese theme that fits really well with the atmosphere. Very hipster chic vibe. Jess turned out to be an amazing stylist that was extremely accommodating. I've gone 4x already and I have always left Moshi Moshi well satisfied with the cut. I've been seeing Julie for my haircuts since early April of last year, and I'll continue to be a regular customer. When I first went in I was growing out the worst haircut of my life (that's what I get for going to a beauty school!) and she turned it into a very cute, flattering, short hairstyle that I kept for a while. I've tried different styles and different bangs, each time I just ask her to do what will look best on me and am always pleased with the results. I saw Tara for some waxing recently, and will be doing definitely be doing that again. It was quick, painless (really!), and I'm pleased with the results. The waxing room used to be a humidor, and it's a really awesome and relaxing space. I love the decor, it's what drew me here in the first place. The staff is always friendly. The have a decent product line-up (They carry Paul & Joe!) but no one ever tries to make me buy stuff. When I ask what to use in my hair, I'm always recommended a product type rather than getting a sales pitch. Pretty much, as long as I live in the area I'll continue to go here. I would recommend the haircuts and waxing to anyone looking for these services. I can't really comment on the other services they offer, as I've never tried them. Karma. I'm quite sure it was someone's good karma that brought me into this quaintly kitschy Japanese-themed salon earlier this year. Once inside, I marveled at the array of quality hair products on the wall and the casual, unpretentious atmosphere. And then there's the automated tea service machine. Score. I have red hair. And I'm in my forties, which means I have red hair, but only about 50% of it is red. Wanting to keep my red hair natural with a touch of pizzazz, it's important to me that the stylist I am handed over to knows a thing or two about red hair. So the owner recommended Amber. I was a bit skeptical, as Amber is sort of blonde (or is it brownish blonde?), but hey, Moshi Moshi had great reviews and I really liked the vibe in there. Let me say - no one, and I mean no one - has managed to provide me the perfect natural red except Amber. I'm not one for trendy hair, but Moshi Moshi handles these trends with flair and the stylists listen when you describe what you want. So I even trusted Amber to balayage me, which I'd never heard of and couldn't pronounce properly for weeks. Nope, I don't live under a rock, I just don't follow trendy hair. I do follow trendy shoes. Pick your battles. But back to Moshi Moshi and Amber...my locks are a lovely, healthy, natural red with wonderfully subtle high and low accents. Thank you Amber and balayage. Oh, and she also knows her way around a fantastic hair cut. Layers are my friend. Who knew? I couldn't be more delighted. This is a marvelous salon. Super kudos to Moshi Moshi and Amber. read more

My experience here was great! I'm very picky about having my hair colored and have had terrible experiences at other salons. I was devastated leaving my stylist in San Diego, but thankful to have found Amber! If you're willing to spend a bit more money, I suggest using ambers services. She knows what she's doing and definitely listened to what I wanted. My highlights turned out to be a little darker than I wanted, but she was right when she said it would lighten. I found this place shortly after moving to the triangle, and haven't been more impressed with a salon. The salon has a quirky (but comfortable!) vibe. the stylists are professional, but real and easy to talk to (I am NOT a haircut-talker. Usually super uncomfortable), and trustworthy. I've done both haircuts and natural and extreme color with Mary, and have always been happy - including when I have come in with one idea, and she tells me what (color, bang, etc.) is going to work out better. I can just walk in and tell her what I want to go for, and trust that the end result is going to be great. The only thing I don't love about Moshi Moshi is that they don't have dedicated parking, but that's what comes with a shop on Franklin. I'll be eagerly awaiting the opening of the new Durham location in January. read more

I'm not one to pay a lot for haircuts... but I decided to treat myself to a better cut at Moshi Moshi last weekend. Unfortunately, they were all booked up with their regular stylists, but they let me schedule a last-minute appointment with Lucas, an "apprentice" (who I hope will be a regular fixture), at a reduced rate. Lucas did a fantastic job! I've got a great, fun haircut that will grow out great (which is exactly what I asked for). He was also great to talk to-- I honestly usually dread conversations with hair stylists, but this one was quite enjoyable. The general atmosphere was easy, comfortable, and welcoming. Not pretentious or overwhelming in any way! I'll definitely be back to see Lucas again, even at the normal stylist rate! read more

My first review and it's not about food? I know I'm surprised too, but I felt the need to give Moshi Moshi its dues. When I was younger, I never read all the girly magazines that ones supposed to read in order to learn things like what are the 10 great lip glosses for summer or how to tweeze your eyebrows without killing yourself. That being said I've hacked away at my eyebrows for years without great results, but without Sandy Cohen-esque brows. Last week, I had a very important interview and decided to finally take my eyebrows to a professional. My friend with perfect eyebrows suggest Moshi Moshi. So late on a Friday afternoon I called Moshi Moshi asking if they had any openings for waxing, they said they'd have one in 15 minutes! I'd like to note that it is not every place in Chapel Hill that stays open past 5 on a Friday nor is it every place that has an opening at that time. Pleasantly surprised, I walked to Moshi Moshi (Franklin St. right next to Time After Time and Med Deli) I got to wait in an adorable Andy Warhol meets Japanese pop setting for only 8 to 10 minutes before Tara took me back. Tara was excellent; she worked diligently on my eyebrows waxing, trimming and plucking until they were perfect. One thing that sets Moshi Moshi apart from other places that do waxing is that they don't use any of that pesky paper! Moshi Moshi uses a hot wax that hardens and then they peel that directly off. Tara told me that this way was less painful and I definitely appreciated that, finding waxing not to be anything like what Apatow's "40 Year Old Virgin suggested. The room the waxing took place in was very relaxing kind of spa like and Tara was a good conversationalist without being overly chatty. When compared to other prices for waxing, Moshi Moshi was a little higher (2-3 dollars though), but it is honestly worth it considering what a great job was done and the fact that it didn't take even a half an hour (I can only imagine how long Aveda takes...) Overall, I had a good experience at Moshi Moshi and plan on updating this review if I go back there for a haircut! read more

Note: for special occasion hair only, no cut had here. The staff at Moshi Moshi made me miss my bangs. They all have them. But one thing I usually look for is to see how different the hair styles are on the staff and patrons. Everyone who came in was getting something different done which leads me to think they know what to do in any case. I was with my clan to prep for a wedding and wanted "the (wedding) Pippa" and was totally psyched with the result. Karen and Catlin were really great giving us tips to replicate our styles on our own. The owner of this place used to be I believe the co-owner of The Beehive in Carrboro where I have gotten a serious sheering. If I lived here, I would totally become a regular. read more

UPDATE: i still like moshi moshi and adrienne, but i'm very dissatisfied with my most recent wax. she wasn't thorough and i had to do lots of tweezing when i got home to make up for it. i get brazilian waxes every four weeks, and i was not about to stop that after moving to chapel hill! had an appointment with adrienne and she didn't miss any details-- super friendly and not awkward at all. while it was definitely less painful that waxes i've gotten in the past (which was a pleasant surprise), i did notice that my hair grew in faster than it has with my Asheville esthetician, Alyssa. their techniques are different so i'm assuming that there's a correlation between less painful technique & swifter regrowth. regardless, it was a pleasant experience and i'm returning today! cute salon also. read more

Moshi Moshi is awesome. I have seen Jenny (the esthetician) multiple times to get waxed and she doe s a great job and is such a joy to chat with during my appointment. She uses hard wax, which in my opinion is a necessity, and she doesn't miss any details! She knows so much knowledge about beauty products and techniques and I can always tell that she has done her research about different things. She usually has a personal experience with anything that she recommends too. She also knows an incredible amount about hair care. I have curly hair and she taught me all about deva curl, which I now use religiously, thanks to her! I just got my first hair cut at Moshi Moshi with Alissa and she was great. She also has curly hair so she could totally relate to a curly girl's hair woes. She gave me a great cut and styled it really nicely using the same products I have at home. UPDATE: I got a complimentary re-dye because it faded so quickly the first time. I'm definitely happy with the customer service here, and now my hair looks much better. I will most definitely come back when I need a trim or coloring. I got a haircut here in December 2012 and really liked it, so came back 5 days ago to get my hair dyed (partial ombre). I loved how it looked the first day, but now the dye on the bottom of my hair is almost washed out, and I've washed my hair twice. I don't think that's supposed to happen. It took two tries to get the dye to set in my hair properly, so it might just be my hair, but the total cost was nearly double was I was planning on spending. The website has estimated ranges for hair services, so I was planning on spending 120/130 MAX including tip. Unfortunately the service itself ended up being $134 (the range on the site for partial ombre was $70-95), and plus tip I was out nearly $180. A little disappointed that I wasn't told how much more it would be, especially since my hair looks almost the same as it did last week at this point. I'd love to return, because I love the people and look of the place, but I think they should be slightly more upfront about costs (if I had known I'd get charged more because the dye didn't set, I would have probably just given up early). Moshi Moshi was the first place that showed up when I googled "salon Chapel Hill". After browsing around their website, I realized you can book your appointments online - and since I hate talking to people on the phone, I was pretty much immediately sold. So convenient! My husband and I had plans to attend a black-tie event that evening, and since I refuse to learn how to do my hair properly, I came here for a blowout. My appointment was with Mary and I have to say she did a really nice job. She took her time, used the curling iron (sometimes you don't get that in a blowout), and the style lasted all night. Totally worth the $30 pricetag. The salon itself is cute and everyone was super sweet. During my appointment I noticed a make-up counter in the back, and when I discovered that their in-house artist was not available to help me with makeup for the evening (I had no idea they even had one until I got there), the receptionist took me back to the make-up counter, helped me pick out a few things, and even showed me how to use them. This is a very cute salon with a fun group of stylists. I first met Karen when I went to the Aveda school down the road on Franklin and then followed her to Moshi Moshi because I liked her so much. If you want a haircut that deviates a little bit from the style du jour or if you have short hair, I would definitely recommend Moshi Moshi. I've been to see Karen and Rita and they both take time to talk you about exactly what you want before they dig in with the shears. I've only had my hair colored there once and I wasn't thrilled with the hue (which was a bit bright for my gig as a child therapist), but they were very sweet about it and willing to work with me to tone it down. Oh, and Lindsay below mentioned the boutique. The boutique! It's full of cute hair knickknacks, handbags, and jewelry from those hip online shops that you longingly peruse but from which you can never justify purchasing. I got a lovely wallet there that's lasted me about two years. I miss Moshi Moshi and hope that they are doing well.
