I've been a loyal customer at Citrine Salon for years. I've given the salon excellent reviews in the past. I will never go back again. A salon has a right to set policies regarding no-shows. But the fees should not be excessive. Also, clients must be made aware of the policy when the appointment is scheduled! I ended up paying the entire amount for a service I did not receive. I paid 102.00. I was told that if I didn't pay it, I could not make another appointment. Even after I apologized and paid the money, I sensed I was not welcome there. There are excellent salons in Chapel Hill that treat their customers much better. Very disappointed. read more

High end salon but worth every penny with a haircut and quick conditioning treatment with Lindsey. Pricing is comparable to other high end salons in Chapel Hill. Love the front desk staff, warm, friendly, and patient (unlike other salons that I have been to). If you are looking for soft, rounded layers, waves and curls cascade, I highly recommend Lindsey. She is very detailed and always strives for perfection. I showed her various pictures of the haircut I want: back, front, side, bangs; my haircut turns out great. Nestled in the heart of Chapel Hill, Citrine is a salon so welcoming and professional that I will definitely be returning for as long as I live in the triangle. Darian is an expert, it seems, at bringing your dream hair to reality. She was kind and patient, listening to each of my suggestions and concerns before she began with an open mind. I placed my trust in her as the hair professional, and I'm so glad I did. As someone who has received color services for almost my whole life, I am used to disappointment. With Darian, all of those insecurities were squashed and I left feeling more confident than ever. The products she used smelled heavenly and left my hair feeling both smooth and full of volume. Darian informed me of which professional hair care products suited my hair best, and I've already made a list of all of the products I plan to purchase on my next visit. How do I give a zero star review. In order to not have hundreds of dollars swindled out from under you, it is imperative that you ask during EVERY step of the process how much they are charging. You need to use the bathroom? Be careful! That's another $50 down the drain! Oh you thought asking for your stylist's opinion was free? Nope! That's a consultation which will be used as your consent to an extra $200 styling! And at the end of it all, your hair will not look like what you asked for, but very similar to its original state. While I have had very good highlights and cuts at Citrine, I have never experienced so much stylist turnover and admin challenges in my 25 years of getting highlights. I used to see a woman for highlights, Sommer, who I never had any issue with. She was always on time, never cancelled an appointment, and did great highlights. Then they called me 2 days before my appointment to let me know she was let go. Of course they couldnt accommodate my appointment time and had to book me several weeks out, which anyone who gets highlights/color regularly knows is not ideal. Then I saw a lovely woman once and then she left. This time they at least provided me a couple of weeks notice, though still didn't have the time slot I booked months in advance. Finally, I saw a less experienced woman one time who then called in sick the morning of my 9am appointment (would have been the second time seeing her). Any one of these issues I would understand, but altogether there just seems to be something off. I still give 3 stars for the quality of highlights! read more

The hair stylist I used to go to at Citrine Salon, Darian Thornton, has her own studio now (HumanKind Studio) but it doesn't have a yelp yet, so I am writing her a review here! Darian is not only a talented hair stylist, but is also incredibly considerate, thoughtful and genuine. I came in for a cut and balayage last week and she did a wonderful job. I wanted the top to be a bit lighter after the color though, and texted her after if she could do a little tweaking post-color. Not only did she reschedule me for the next week, she colored it exactly the way I wanted and re-styled it (free of charge). Absolute worst experience of my life. I left with over $300 down the drain and nearly the same hair that I entered with. The management is AWFUL and completely ignores customer concerns. The entire time I felt judged by all of the workers. Also, neither the stylists nor the website ever mention the REAL prices. You only learn how OVERPRICED the treatment is until you get to the register. It's impossible not to break down in tears after an experience like this. I've only been here once but my hair has completely transformed ever since. I got some sort of keratin treatment to make my hair straighter. My hair was THAT hair type where it's just gonna look frizzy no matter what I do. Well, not anymore! It's been almost a year since I last had the treatment and my hair is still looking awesome! It's very natural looking but at the time my hair definitely was more straight. It's basically looking like what I wanted my natural hair to be like. The frizz was pretty much gone, and it still is. My hair also dries a lot faster. That being said, it was pretty expensive. Christie was really nice and gave me lots of good hair tips. Everyone here was super nice. read more

This past Friday Citrine did my hair and makeup for fashionSPARK. From the minute I walked in the door I was greeted warmly and I could feel the excitement in the air as all working were excited to get us glammed up for the show. Angie Aiken did my hair and boy did she work hard to get that fine long hair of mine crimped, curled, and teased up into a bouffant type look with with a controlled yet wild look! Heather Thomas-Slott, their featured stylist of the month for September, went around offering assistance as needed since we models were a project that the salon took on with collaborative flair. Chenell stepped in to make sure my face was primed for makeup by Angie Aiken. Both moved swiftly but were gentle and precise to get my nude sculpted look right. Glen Rumsey then followed us to touch us up on site and he was so great to have along as we prepped back stage to go on. His fun energy was exciting and inspiring. I've gotten my hair cut and colored by Heather a couple times, and her work is wonderful. She's friendly, efficient, and an expert at her craft. It's a pricey appointment, but one I'm willing to pay because this is no strip mall experience. One other important thing to note: Ethan in the front office is spectacular. I've left several salons because of horrible, rude office staff -- it's always a shame, because the stylists have been great, but dealing with the receptionist is not worth it. But here? I've been going to Citrine for more than 3 years. I've always really admired and enjoyed the place. Things go smoothly, and my stylist, Dana, is skilled and creative and fun to be around! Today was my first appointment after the COVID19 closures. They obviously had to change their business significantly to keep people safe, and I have to give them the most positive review possible for the way they've adapted. I love this salon and would recommend it to anyone! Very chic design and even better customer service. I love the relaxing atmosphere and always feel relaxed. As far as stylists go, I'm sure they're all amazing but the true asset there is Chhalin. She has by far exceeded everything I've wanted in a stylist. She knows my hair type, gets my color perfect every time and is friendly and caring. I always get a cut and color and even after being MONTHS overdue I still receive compliments on my hair! It is very difficult for stylists to get my very dark and thick hair a nice honey blond without it looking brassy and she gets it consistently right. I love her professionalism and welcoming ways. Very impressed. Tiffany knows how to cut men's hair. I've been to most salons in the area and I've had some decent haircuts in the past, but Tiffany stands out as having most talent and technique for visualizing and shaping men's hair. Citrine is a good setup: a waiting area that's separate from where the hair is cut, a sizable salon that's clean and hip, and high ceilings help make the place feel open and airy. The front desk staff is nice, and the stylists all seem pretty cool. And there's enough free parking, so I'm not constantly looking for a spot. Biggest complaint: they don't take tips on credit card. So you have to bring cash or a check to tip your stylist. When I asked the front desk, they said this is permanent. I totally don't get it, but they need to step this up or they'll lose clients and stylists. I mean, start-up food trucks even take tips on credit cards. I'm new to the area from NYC and had been looking for a great salon for me and my young girls. Citrine is fantastic, and Kelly is the best. She helped me with a bit of a hair emergency (hair partially burnt thanks to a poorly positioned lit candle at a friend's house), and handled it all with complete ease. I went in for a quick haircut and left with $74 angles I didn't ask for. While the hairdresser was lovely in conversation, I explicitly stated that I wanted only the slightest angles around my face that wouldn't fall out of a ponytail. They couldn't fit me in for a blow dry, which was fine until I realized the 20 minute haircut was $74 with no blow dry. Once my hair dried, I saw the 2-inch angles that I didn't want and some pieces that were left out and I had to cut myself. Overall, the performance was poor and ridiculously overpriced. I scheduled a partial and cut with Allie the day before a big interview. I arrived early and Allie was really nice and we chatted for a bit, and then got started. Unfortunately, while my color was sitting she informed me that she didn't have enough time to do both my cut and blow dry, I had to choose one. Umm....ok? I think the combination of me being a first time client, her having to fix a color bleed I had from a previous highlight, and the salon not scheduling enough time all contributed to her running out of time. However, it still sucked. I desperately needed a cut, so I couldn't skip that, but that meant I left the salon without having really seen my cut and color, and also didn't get the blowout that I wanted to feel great for my interview the next day. The REALLY annoying part though was that I figured maybe I could come back later that day, or have another stylist do my blow dry, but that wasn't an option. Plus, apparently blow dries are "a la carte" so while I didn't pay for it technically, it was still $200 for a partial and cut and I didn't even leave feeling good! Plus, when I paid, I handed back my credit card slip to the receptionist and she didn't even say thank you or bye as I left. Super rude. So all in all, Allie was nice, and my color looks pretty good, but leaving there with wet hair definitely tainted my experience. I'm getting married and I came here to do a wedding make-up trial run with Angela. She asked me the colors and styles for the wedding and what time it was, where it was, and what I wanted ect ect.. I am not that super crazy bride that has to have things a certain way so I just described what I wanted done. I figure she was the expert, best to let her use her stylist skills. To start, I was disappointed that she didn't pick out my colors and pass them by me before she did my makeup. There really was not creative interaction during the appointment. But she did do a nice job with my makeup. I was happy with it. However, to me it was just nice and there was nothing extra special about it. I am either going to have a cousin that is makeup artist do my makeup or I may have my favorite makeup artist at Nordstrom do my makeup. Either with, I am going to pass on having Angela do my wedding makeup. She was good but I expect a little more. read more

I had Angie Aiken cut my hair. I asked for the hairstylist who was best at cutting men's hair, and she said everyone was equally good. If that is true then I suggest people try elsewhere. Angie was nice, but I don't think she did a very good job at cutting/styling my hair. I showed her some pictures of the type of style I was going for. I pointed out that I didn't think the exact haircut would work for me, but I showed her the pictures to give her the idea of the style/feel I was going for. What she gave me was definitely more of a literal copy of the pictures, and I don't think that worked well on me. She also didn't really use any advanced techniques, like nothing was done to texturize my hair (work with a razor, thinning shears, etc.). She also missed quite a few hairs around my ears. I should also point out that the price I paid for this haircut is the same my favorite stylist back in DC (see my yelp review for Jo-Anne), so in my mind the price I paid was deserving of a top-notch haircut. So the end product is a flat, uneven, overpriced haircut that doesn't really work for my face shape. I am going to try another stylist to see if the receptionist was telling the truth, and I will update my review then. ...The reason why I am giving them a second chance is because after reading the bios it is apparent that Angie is one of the most junior of stylists, am hoping the more accredited workers there will do a better job. read more

I went home with very dark brown hair and no highlights with a minimal haircut. Charged $280.00. Complained to management. She is spookily good at reading who you are, where you're at, and what you want, even if you aren't entirely sure of those things yourself. I always walk out feeling like a million bucks. I have very curly, very thick hair and I'm originally from NY where hair like mine is a dime a dozen. Around the south, though, I've found it more difficult to find a stylist that knows how to cut my hair type well. Thank God I found Citrine and Tiffany after thoroughly researching the Triangle and trying enough hair salons I could cry! Tiffany and her husband both cut hair for years in NYC, and they still fly back periodically for their loyal clients up there. It's like this: when I go to Tiffany for a haircut or a bang trim, I say about 3.5 words to describe what I want and before I can even finish the thought, she's playing with my hair and positioning it exactly the way I see it in my mind. She's truly amazing! And she gives a great blow out too. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that she's super nice and fun to chat with while you're there. read more

I'm reviewing Citrine's waxing services only, as I haven't had any other services there. Angela, is a wonderful aesthetician. I've gone to her for about 3 years and have no need to go anywhere else. She is very thorough, personable, fast, and always makes me feel comfortable. As far as the environment, Citrine is incredibly clean and professional. It's very easy to make an appointment. I usually call 2-3 weeks before and have always gotten the date I wanted. Parking is also very easy and free. Price wise, Citrine is not cheap, but the quality of the experience is spot-on. read more

I just moved to the CH area. I looked online for a salon. I checked out Citrine and they had pretty good detailed reviews. I made an appointment with Angie. I have very long, thick hair and wanted a trim with long layers. I showed Angie a few photos of the hair style I wanted. Angie was very professional and did a great job. I was extremely happy with the result. The salon was very clean and everyone seemed warming and nice. I wanted to do something a little more dramatic with my hair but I have a wedding in a few weeks and did not want to risk it. I will be returning in a few months to try something new. read more

The attitude of management is terrible when it comes to addressing customer concerns. I had my hair colored on a very busy day, and the color was left in twice as long as the directions called for, causing my hair and my scalp to be badly damaged -- stiff, straight hair with no body, and horrible sores that emerged on my scalp. I was out of the state for the following several weeks and went to talk with management when I returned to ask what they might suggest as a remedy (hair was still stiff). I was coldly told that because I hadn't notified them within 2 weeks of the appointment they would do nothing. Not a very caring approach! read more

I've been a loyal customer at Citrine, but when my stylist recently left the salon, I was referred to a new stylist. I specifically requested a razor cut, and then was told mid-haircut by the stylist that he didn't do razor cuts. I asked for a trim - just texturize it and take some weight out. I left the salon with a completely different haircut that was nothing like what I asked for, and it's uneven from side to side and from front to back. One of the worst haircuts I've ever had. The salon itself is clean and roomy. I was able to get a same day appointment, which was wonderful, but unfortunately my appointment did not start until 20 minutes after the scheduled time. Despite the delayed start, my time with my stylist was not cut short and I did not feel rushed at all. I was happy with my haircut and the ability of the stylist to listen to what I wanted, as well as give suggestions about what might suit me. The reason I was not able to give a higher rating is completely based on price. The base price is already fairly high for the area and it does not include drying. While I was happy with the end look, I don't think I could justify this cost for regular trims and upkeep. read more

Earlier this year I decided I wanted bangs. I went to Aveda, and the really, really nice student... cut some long layers into my hair. $30 later I had basically the same haircut I went in with. I think we were both too anxious and inexperienced to make a commitment. I decided to stop being so cheap and to look for a more experienced stylist, which is when I found Citrine online from their fantastic reviews. I am very happy I went there. Angie is awesome. She was very patient with me to get my side-bangs just the right length. She's also the first stylist I've ever had that hasn't complained about how thick my hair is (really, the first one ever). She listened to what I want, made some suggestions, and in the end I have a great haircut. One thing that I like about her is that she constantly asks for my feedback-- is that short enough? is that where I part my hair? should the bangs be shorter? It seems like she really wants to give you the haircut that you want. I've been to see her twice at this point (three times if you include the free bang-trim between cuts), and I definitely intend to keep going. Citrine is not cheap (at least by my standards), but it is definitely worth the investment. For what it's worth, I have thick, medium-to-long, wavy (lots of body but not curly) hair. read more

I have been going to Citrine salon since moving to the area a few years ago. I'm not very fancy with my hair and have only used the salon to get simple haircuts and I have always been satisfied with the quality and price. Recently, I decided to get a cut and highlights. I only had a very vague idea of what I wanted. When I sat down with Chhalin, she really helped me figure out what would look best, giving really great suggestions. She recommended a highlighting technique called Balayage that I had never heard of before, saying that it looked more natural than regular highlights. And I was so so happy with the results! My hair now has really natural looking blonde highlights that make my hair look sunkissed. Chhalin did an amazing job and I got a lot of compliments. Overall it was a great experience and definitely worth the money. I highly recommend Chhalin for anyone wanting Balayage highlights, and Citrine Salon is generally great for other salon services. read more

Had the very worst experience at this place. Was very clear with what I wanted, even showed multiple pictures of the Brown/caramel balayage I was hoping for, Of course I did not expect it to be perfect but OMG she did everything BUT what I wanted; after 4 hours in the salon, I ended up with my hair about 10inches shorter of what I asked, and the most mediocre highlights( I wanted balayage), they don't even have color, it looks like they are only bleached and they are sooo uneven, some start at the root of my hair, others 1 inch after that, others 3 inches.. is a total mess... and it wasp almost $300, way more than other high end salons in Durham or Raleigh; if you want something similar to what I wanted, go somewhere else, during my 4 hours there, I only saw older ladies getting simple haircuts, no wonder why they have the great reviews. read more
