I waited a long time to write this review. Positive: Rez did a great job on my color. I was very pleased. It has lasted 6 weeks which is the most I can expect Negative: my cut was a disaster. I showed up with a bob and a picture of former bobs. I asked for a color and cut. As noted, color was fine. But I got a 1970 Dorothy Hamel wedge! The total opposite of a bob When Rez showed me my hair, I asked" Is my hair longer in the front?" She said my hair was too short for the cut I asked for... I came in for a trim! I looked like a mix between a former 1960's Beetle and Dorothy! I didn't want to hurt her business but 7 weeks later, as I try to find a new salon, I still don't know how to get my cut fixed Beware- look at the back of the hair of Rez, the receptionist and 2 of the stylists. If you want your back to be an uneven wedge, they have it done.... Anything else is beyond them. I regret hurting her business, but I can't let others be as disappointed as I was. I was traveling for our 30 th Anniversary and refused my husband to take any pictures because it looked so stupidly bad. read more

tuesday may 25 i went to studio k for a haircut and color. as i set about explaining what i wanted, and trying to get input from the stylist (Rez-sp?) the exchange ratcheted up to confrontational!! this is my hair, and i know what looks good and what doesn't... i told the stylist i didn't want to sit in her chair and argue! she heard "i don't want to sit in your chair!" so she stopped my cut in the middle, removed my cape and towel, turned my chair to the door, and walked away! yes, she just walked away in mid cut!! look, i can be a handful, but really, a hairstylist who has a hissy fit because she doesn't get her way?? this stylist, as it turns out, is also the owner of the salon... what an awful experience overall... and a crappy example for an owner to set for other stylists, both of whom were delightful. i won't be recommending this salon. read more

Very disappointed in my hair cut. It is way shorter than I had planned and with very harsh, choppy layers that look awful and make it impossible to style. It turned out nothing like the pictures I showed. The stylist's technique felt very outdated. Now I'm left miserably waiting for my hair to grow out so I can get someone else to fix it. I absolutely LOVE this salon!!! My mom first came here 3 years ago and Connie did such an amazing job that my sister and I both started going here. I can honestly say we have been so happy with the stylists and the service that this place offers that they can get all of our business for a lifetime. To this day, my family will drive out of our way to get a hair cut here. I recently actually made the decision to get bangs as well and of course, making any sort of drastic hair change can be kind of intimidating, but Rezvan made me feel at ease and just proved that ALL the stylists at this location are VERY good at what they do!!! She really makes you feel like you are family and conversation also flows very naturally. So I will say that they were able to get me in same day without an appointment however I still ended up waiting a bit and I did not receive a good haircut. When I first walked in the woman who would ultimately be styling me was still working with someone else. She was blow drying her hair and didn't seem to be in a rush even though I was seated waiting in the front area. I finally did get seated in her chair. Now. I did not think I was asking got anything difficult, yet if came out terrible. I showed the woman a picture of what I wanted and she made it seem as if she could do it easily. She offered to wash my hair but I told her I didn't want that because I had just washed it. So she wet it and sat me back in the chair and proceeded to cut it. She cut a little off the back and asked me to "feel it" I'm not an expert Kor do I know what I should be feeling for. So I just went along with it. She proceeded to cut a little bit more off, and then someone else came in to see her (I'm assuming a regular client). She finished up and said to me "if you see any bring you don't like you're welcome to come back"...with my hair completely wet she walked me to the front desk where I checked out. The lady said since I was firs time customer I'd be getting a 20% discount. The woman before me (a white woman) got a haircut and her hair was blow dried and styled and she paid $36. I was told that was my price same and I my haircut was rushed and it was not blow dried! I am a Hispanic woman and I never assume race is an issue but things just didn't add up. I went home and cried because of how bad my haircut was. Thankfully style it doesn't look bad and I know my hair will grow back but ultimately I was extremely dissatisfied with the entire process. read more

Finally, a reasonably-priced hair salon! I have been searching for one in the Durham/Chapel Hill area, because I am not about to pay $50 for a simple wash and trim. I had walked in, hoping I could get a cut right away, but I was told that I'd have to come back the next day with an appointment. There was only one hairstylist there on this recent weeknight, so that was a little disappointing. While the salon's calendar was wide open the next day, it's clear that you probably can't trust your luck on a random drop in to get a haircut. Anyway, I came the next day, and the salon was poppin'! I could tell that many people there were regulars. When I originally made my appointment, the woman made a point to ask if I was a new customer. When I met my stylist, I found out she was brand new and had been there only a month. I believe her name was Helen, and she was fantastic! I loved talking with her, and she was such a diligent stylist. She asked me all the right questions and let me make decisions. She wasn't pushy and provided good advice for hair maintenance. It's been several days since I got my hair cut, and I must say that it is exactly what I wanted. When I am due for my next cut, I'll definitely be making an appointment here. Bottom line: This reasonably-priced salon has great stylists who listen to their customers and are oh so friendly! Just be sure to make an appointment in advance. read more

Y'all. Can we talk about this place for a second? I have been to numerous salons in the area trying to find my go to stylist. I thought I found a place, but they are always booked. ALWAYS. So I had a little breakdown. I needed my hair done and I needed it done soon. I googled walk-in salons and this place popped up. I called them at 7:30pm on a Friday night and they had something available the next day! I walked in and the sweet front desk lady was so accommodating. Offered me drinks while I waited (which was half a second) and then Helen came out to grab me. Right off the bat I felt comfortable with Helen. We had great conversation and she listened to me while I explained what I wanted and what my budget wanted. Their prices are well priced for the area and they tell you prices up front. Literally, there's a chalkboard wall with all the services and the prices up front. Helen made my hair look amazing!! I've received so many compliments and it's been 3 days. She's been doing hair for a while and just moved to the area which is why her schedule is open. (It won't be for long after people figure out how amazing she is with hair.) I initially planned on coming here once, fixing my hot mess hair, and then planning ahead better with my other salon. After my visit with Helen, I'm now switching completely! She is so personable and lovely. The time flew by and we actually hugged after I left. I'll definitely be back. read more

Rezvan is the most professional hair stylist I have ever met. Every time I visit her shop I'm always certain that she will give me the color and style that I will absolutely love when she is finished. She also takes care to listen to my wishes and is always kind, warm and never rude. I feel very comfortable sending others to this salon as I know how professional and kind the stylists are. MANDY was wonderful. I'm turning 30 and never colored my hair before. Wanted something fun and different with cut and color - but didn't know what. Never experienced "lift" levels or picking out colors, etc. Mandy was very patient and put together a plan for me once she gathered what it was that I wanted. I was internally freaking out during the foil unveiling, but it came out wonderfully. I love the color and the cut was everything i had asked for - volume at the roots and lift with healthy ends. When I found out my husband was deploying, we decided to get married...quickly! Despite the quickness of my nuptials, I still wanted to "feel" like a bride on my wedding day. I'm very serious about my eyebrows. Don't laugh. I've been waxing my eyebrows since the age of 15...before that, I looked like a Muppet. I have crazy, wiry eyebrows and I'm very picky about the length and shape that I want them to be in. I have started trusting my eyebrow waxing to Studio K. Went to Melanie for my first visit. I wanted something new and hadn't had my hair cut in about 3 months. Although I knew I wanted it shorter than I had, I wasn't sure about the exact cut. She took the time to consult with me before hand. I went in for a quick haircut here yesterday. I'm getting my hair colored on Saturday so wanted to get a trim that wouldn't cost me more than $30. I was able to book my appointment for the same day and was seated right when I got there. Because the lady didn't have time to do a blowout, she did a dry cut. She did a great job and did not cut off any more than I asked, which I really appreciated. I was also in and out in 20 minutes, which was awesome. Studio K is my go-to place for haircuts. I moved to the area a year back and I've had my hair cut from them several times now with different stylists and they were all great. Their prices are very reasonable too. I've always left Studio K feeling good about the way I look. I want to give special shout-out to Ashlyn, the Junior Stylist. I have thinning, not-so-great hair. She did a wonderful job with it, made it look nice and full. I feel that says quite a lot about a stylist, when they can do wonders with difficult hair. Sarah is my go-to girl at Studio K. I wandered into Studio K when I first moved to Durham in 2009 with elbow length hair that I needed to have chopped to donate. Sarah was a little nervous about doing it because it was a big change but once I explained that I was sure about it she went to town snipping my donation ponytail and then giving me an adorable angled bob. I've kept coming back because everytime I go in and tell her what I want, she totally delivers. She keeps up with trends in cut and color. I personally use her for highlights and lowlights and have never been dissatisfied, but I know for a fact that if I were, she would do her best to adjust my color or cut so that I'm happy. read more

I can't believe it took me this long to write a review! Especially when I got such a good haircut. Have you ever had a haircut that makes you want to admire yourself in every reflective surface you pass? You can't stop touching the ends of your hair because 1) it's so different than what you're used to and 2) it's so amazing you need to touch it to believe it's really your hair. You want to grab strangers on the street and say "Do you SEE how fabulous my hair is?!"* Well, that's the kind of haircut I got at Studio K Salon. Alright, a little back story. My mom and I have been living in Durham for over a year and we've had nothing but crummy hair cuts. We went to a few highly rated salons around town, but always left disappointed . We were both very nervous about getting our hair cut again, but Jessica was fabulous. She was the first stylist I met in Durham that actually gave me a good consultation, too. I wasn't sure what exactly I wanted, I thought I'd just get my hair shaped up and my bangs fixed (they had been previously cut in a way I didn't like), but I was open to doing something new. Jessica said she could fix my hair, but she also had suggestions and ideas of her own. Every other stylist I saw simply nodded and said, "Yes, I can do that" without giving me any suggestions or input. Jessica took what I said into account, as well as my hair type and face shape, so she could give me a cut that was actually flattering. I can easily say that this is the best haircut I've had in a very, very long time. It's dramatic, fun, quirky and really flattering and cute. My mom really loves her hair as well (which was also cut and colored by Jessica). I LOVE Jessica. She's funny, nice and incredibly creative. Because she's relatively new to the salon, the manager came over to do a quality check when Jessica finished cutting my hair, which I thought was really awesome. I already knew I liked Jessica, but the fact that the manager checks up on new stylists and is involved really made me like the salon. I'm done hunting for the right salon and stylist. Jessica did such an amazing job with my hair. It's been a few weeks, but I STILL admire my hair in every reflective surface I pass. Jessica joked that I would go back to her and say, "Jessica, I love you! Will you marry me?" Well, Jessica, I DO love you, but I'm sorry, I just don't swing that way and won't be proposing marriage. I have been a regular customer to this salon since moving from Boston to North Carolina in 2004. I feel like my hair stylist is a member of my family. I was really angry to find out today that the long-time owner Karen sold this salon with no notice to her staff or her customers. The new owner, who is from Persia, never met with staff to assure them of their jobs or let customers know what was happening. She immediately removed all Christmas decorations and banned coffee, tea and sodas. She painted the chalk board wall detailing prices so I'm sure prices will go up drastically. She also got rid of all the hair styling products so I no longer have any place to go to for my shampoo and conditioner for color-treated hair. I'm guessing she will get rid of all the staff, too, soon. I gave all my personal info to my stylist today and assured her I will go whenever she goes. I have no loyalty to Studio K and I am sorely disappointed with Karen's behavior. She obviously doesn't care anything about her staff OR the reputation of the salon she nurtured for so many years. I did not have a good experience here because my hair was cut WAY shorter than I wanted. But their prices are good and the salon is clean, and the owner is very professional and caring. I was a walk in for a trim. They told me they'd have time to fit me in but not a full blow out. Cool. I get with the junior stylist, also fine. She offers to wash and shampoo. I ask just not to leave with wet hair. She agrees. The sign on the window says that someone will check over her. Nobody did. No other appointments had arrived for her yet she finished the cut, says "yup! It's even too!" Like that is some sort of nuance. My hair is still sopping wet and she's finished. After I check out I ask for some hairspray since it's a hot humid day and my hair will frizz. She hands me the bottle for me to do myself without a mirror, in the lobby. I'm extremely disappointed and now have to go home to dry my own hair that I just paid to have done. I will not return and do not recommend them to anyone! read more

Christine is my FAVORITE!!! I get my hair straightened by her once every 6 months and with the process taking between 4-6 hours, she is WONDERFUL!!! I have been going to Studio K for a long time. My usual haircutter was unavailable, but I really needed a cut, so I made an appointment with Celia. I thought, "she's an experienced hairstylist, so it will be okay". Well, she pulled my hair terribly and hurt my head even though I mentioned that I have a tender scalp, and then she cut off more than I asked and pretty much misinterpreted everything I said about my hair. I tried to take it in stride, but when I got finished paying $40, and sat down to really look at my hair, as you do, I was so upset. So I went back, and I sat down in the chair again, and to her credit, she did try to fix my hair, and offered to cut it more for free, but the damage is done- it is too short in the places I wanted it left a little longer, and too long in other places. But here is the really bad part--- when my eyes teared up and I was visibly upset because I knew it couldn't be helped (and now I have to wait for it to grow out for months), she says to me that, when I came in, I looked so tired and drab, and that now at least I looked better. How rude and mean. I won't let her touch my hair again because she will just butcher it, and I don't know that I will even go back to see the woman who normally cuts my hair there. read more
