Had a terrible experience here. Got a "blowout" I told the stylist I wanted just a regular blowout. She put rollers in my hair without asking, or telling me it was going to be extra to do that. She did not put any hair spray in my hair! (i have straight hair, obviously I would need hair spray to hold the blowout) it went flat when I went outside for 5 minutes. She also did my hair part terrible I had a bump in the back of my head from her not doing my part correctly, literally have never had a stylist mess that up before. Cost me $80 for the worst blowout Ive ever had. They offered for me to come back and fix it which I appreciated, but it was my wedding rehearsal day I didnt have time to come back. $100 total with tip, down the drain and the extra stress on my wedding wknd just really sucked. Last week I had the best facial ever in my 70+ years on this earth! Merlinde was most gracious and kind ensuring my comfort through each step of the process. She was thorough and exacting as she cared for my face in a quiet non-rushed manner. Her massage of my arms, shoulders, décolletage, and hands was gentle and left me totally relaxed by the end of the session. I highly recommend her services and will be back next month. read more

I cannot speak highly of them enough! Their prices are costly, but they are in line with the other businesses in Chapel Hill/Carrboro. To me, it is worth it to know and trust they will do a good job!! Their owner was nice enough to get me a same day appointment when I (unfortunately) went to other studio and got a bad haircut. Is it possible to leave zero stars? Negative stars? In my view, they took advantage of a 17-year old girl (not to mention her Dad) and were condescending, arrogant, inflexible and...did a lousy job on her hair. Their pricing is unclear and deceptive and charged her $240 because, according to them, the prices on the website are "where prices begin." I learned the hard way that while that may be where they begin, they apparently have no end. Price gouging, dishonesty through lies of omission, subpar work and an overall amateurish environment. I'm appalled, my daughter is upset yet Mina's emerges victorious. Another dissatisfied customer. The number of bad reviews of this place should give one pause, but don't seem to get in the way of them staying in business. Folks- don't send your kids in there alone. They'll just keep adding services, they won't tell you or get adult permission first, and then expect payment in full. Nice work, if you can get it. While their business practices, especially as they pertain to minors, may not be illegal (I have no legal background and cannot opine), they certainly are immoral and reprehensible. I went to Minas because I was making a huge change with my hair, going from shoulder length to above my ears. I thought that because they were a high end salon, I could trust them to do it well. But, my stylist made a huge mistake! When I called back and spoke to the manager, she asked me to send a picture. Upon receiving it, she immediately contacted the owner, who came right in to do a correction. She also saw me three weeks later to follow up. It's because of the staff and owner's genuine concern and immediate help that I'm giving this visit three stars instead of one. They truly were amazing and I appreciate everything they did to try and correct the problem. read more

I've been going to this salon for five years. I referred my mom and friends and brought Mina's more business. Tony, my stylist, ruined my mother's hair. She has light brown hair and he gave her red highlights. He was rude and unprofessional to her and when my mother called to see how it could be fixed because it was embarrassing to go out in public with her messed up hair from a "professional, top-rated salon," Susan, the manager, was going to circle back with her and remedy the situation. My mom never heard back--called her weekly to get an update, to which the response was, Susan was unavailable. When my mother asked about a refund or a credit because of what happened to her hair as well as the unprofessional service, they claimed they didn't know what they could do for her. Meanwhile, I went to get my hair done by Tony, and he would barely speak to me, used a rude tone and made remarks about how he didn't know how he could do my hair because my mother had the audacity to stand up for herself, and bring to the attention of the salon what took place. Needless to say, that's no problem. We have a new salon lined up and would never return to a place that's this rude and unprofessional to loyal customers of 5+ years. Don't go to Mina's. Definitely don't go to Tony. And if something goes wrong, don't expect to ever get a genuine response from Susan, the manager. Updated based on the below feedback: Mina's Studio It's very disheartening to see such a reply that negates what took place and denies the responsibility that falls on your business to report the truth. But I'm assuming you responded in a timely manner because this is a public-facing site where others can read reviews. I'm not going to engage in a back and forth that points out how difficult and impossible it was to get up with Susan, how we had to call constantly and could never get in touch with her or get a response in what could even "be done to rectify the situation." This is bad business. The customer is always right, and this rings especially true when your stylist takes two hours to give a customer red, wet hair when, in the past, he took two hours to highlight, cut and dry. In short, this was the quickest response we ever received from you, and it was to save face in front of other customers. This is so incredibly disappointing. And I, as a fellow customer, can't support what happened and the way a family member, another fellow customer, was treated. This is not the Carolina way. Had hair done for my wedding at Mina's. I choose Mina's because of how close it was to The Carolina Inn (my venue) and because it was named one of the top salons according to Bride magazine in 2013. I exchanged multiple emails with Louise, the bridal consultant onsite, she seemed very polite and eager to get me in for my bridal hair trial. She was very accommodating when scheduling my appointments with Enrique for trial and subsequent wedding day appointment. However, she neglected to tell me how much the hair trial would cost and that it would not he included in the price of the bridal hair. There was also no mention of it in the written contract. The hair trial was not what I wanted and didn't not look like a professional had done it. I assumed that because it was a trail, that I would not have to pay since there was no mention of it and was so poorly done. I posted pictures along with this review, please see for yourself. The updo was not worth the $120 that I was charged. I was furious and let Louise know that I was not what I had expected. Nothing was done, except that I would get a discount for my day of updo. I was also told that I should come the day before my wedding to get a wash and blowout. I've been to multiple hair salons in the Raleigh/Durham area and by far this was the worst blow out. I'm Latina and have very coarse and thick hair, most other salons are able to blow dry without any issues. After my blow dry at Mina's my hair looked so frizzy, I was so disappointed. The price, $60. Day of wedding, my sweet dog died causing me to be late. Enrique was very accommodating considering I was not only late but I also changed my updo style. Enrique tired really hard to make me happy but now that I look back on wedding pictures, was not the hair style I envisioned. Cost: $120. No discount as previously discussed was given but by this point all I wanted to do was get married, so I did not complain. I encourage brides to stick with people they know for you bridal hair or get multiple trials until you get one that works for you. I will not be back. I really enjoyed my haircut here. Heather was my stylist, and she made me feel very comfortable. She asked me for exactly what I wanted before I sat down, listened to my hair problems (just wanted about an inch trim and thinning/layering for my frustratingly wavy thick hair), confirmed some of my hair desires (how I wanted my bangs to look, how my hair is usually parted, etc), and then set right to work. She was very friendly and warm, and did not make me feel rushed at all. She also offered me a drink, which I gladly took. The spa water was infused with cucumbers and lemons, and was very refreshing. The best part was the haircut. After she worked her magic, my hair looked and felt so alive. There was volume and bounce and no frizz at all. She trimmed it to the perfect length and had reduced the weight of my hair by renewing the grown-out layers. The ends of my hair flipped out adorably due to the way she blowdried my hair, so my normal frizzy-wavy texture was now smooth-wavy. The back of my head looked soo good - I couldn't even believe it. My boyfriend was super impressed too and loved it. I wish I had a before picture so I could show the comparison, but the $41 I paid was very worth it. I deducted one star because it is a bit on the pricey end, but then again, I have yet to find a cheap haircut here in Chapel Hill, so I am willing to pay that much for such quality cuts and service. read more

As a male, and an older one at that, I have found it difficult to enjoy getting a quality haircut, or my callused feet dealt with, in a way that allowed me to relax, have expert operators with whom I could chat or not, and not be assaulted by music that made the whole experience even more of an ordeal. Mina's put an end to that problem. From the amazingly pleasant and knowledgeable reception staff to my favorite pedicurist (calluses can be painful to remove and she has never hurt me) to the woman who totally gets my ever-thinning hair, I could not be happier. They even know my preferences in coffee drinks, delivered right to my chair. In fact, I'm headed there tomorrow for a relaxing hour or so, and I'm definitely looking forward to it. My only wish is that they would give me a real shave with a straight razor. read more

I don't get my hair cut often, so I'm willing to pay a premium for a smooth experience. I've been to Mina's four or five times, and the first couple of times were fine. I didn't have to wait long, had my hair cut and dried by Samantha, who did a nice job, and then I was able to get back to work. However, the last three times I've gone, I had to wait 15+ minutes (to the point where one time, after almost 25 minutes, I was about to leave) and then felt rushed through the whole thing. Each time, I was offered something to drink while I waited, both the reception staff and Samantha apologized, and Samantha complained about the scheduling. I really liked the convenience of getting my hair cut close to my office, but I plan the rest of my day around the time it'll take to drive there, get my hair cut and get back, and I just don't have 15 or 20 minutes to sit around waiting to get started. I assumed once or twice was a fluke, maybe, but after the third time I won't be back. I'm not sure if the issue was with the receptionists who handled scheduling or with the stylist, but I was booking months in advance (not short notice) and for $70 + tip they really should have been able to do better. read more

This place is really hard to navigate if you are new. I (Luke C's wife) got a very junior hairdresser the first time who did a so so hair cut at a pretty high price. The next time was during December and they were clearly busy. My hairdresser was in her late 50s. She was 45 mins late and she admitted to me that she doesn't normally cut hair but was brought in for the weekends because it was busy during the Christmas period. She usual job is to sell hair products. My conclusion after 6 months was that Mina's was far to established and busy for my business. Mina's studio is expensive but worth the money. I have gotten my hair done there 3 times now, and I've had a couple Brazilian waxes too. My fave stylist is Lane. He is extremely talented and always spends several minutes just talking to me about my needs and wants. Basically, going to Mina's is how I imagined hair salons when I was a child. You sit down and have a very adult conversation about exactly what you want. I can't believe people say they get rushed here. That has been the opposite of my experience! Lane talks to you and actually explains the science behind what he's doing (I'm a nerd and I like the chemistry behind everything). Also, he uses brand new techniques which make me feel like I'm a superstar :D For reference, I have blond hair that is very fine and thin. I go to get my hair lighter and trimmed. My hair has never looked better! Friends and family are constantly commenting about the color and how my hair looks thicker now (which is a huge deal for me because my hair always looks flat and stringy). I go to Mina's to get myself waxed down under, and I'm talking all the way. Used to see Molly and she was great, but she's moved on since, and I recently saw a woman who I think was named Kate. I was VERY pleased---it was as painless as a Brazilian can be, and very quick. Highly recommend her services, but would not recommend Jenny, who I saw about two years ago. I hear her eyesight is not good, and that matters with these sort of things. I would highly suggest Mina's do some sort of system for their regulars, since I hate doling out $65 every time I want to get a Brazilian, but I haven't found a better option in the area so I can't really be picky. To return her darker brown hair back to the rich blonde she was when we met. Look, if you can't do a job, don't take it on. After the FIRST cut and color, I was upset. Brown, reddish blonde, and dirty blonde is NOT Blonde. payment. I get to the counter to pay for services that I am unhappy with and the price is now $119.00. I said, "Look, you told me on the phone $78.00" and the counter staff tells me that I must have "heard them wrong." I'm a former Marine. We don't HEAR things wrong but we do the job done right the first time. telephone promotion This type of telephone promotion that engages customers enough to set up an appointment only to change the price after the services is a con. I live in NYC. I've NEVER been to a salon that tells me one price then charges another. The only time that I've ever spent $200 on a cut and color was in Chicago...where the experts are and man did I look like a million dollars when I left. next step We have to return to the studio the next day so they can fix the color. Unprofessional, Rude, Overpriced - Where To Start - Go Somewhere Else I don't think one star is too low for this salon. I only give it one star because there are some very nice stylists there but they drop like flies once they realize they are working in an incredibly unprofessional environment. The owners do not care at all about clients in my opinion. It's a "one lost, one gained" mentality. I have had stylists miss my appointment. I've shown up and been told they were running long with another client and I had to reschedule - no phone call, nothing. I have arrived and been told that another stylist would have to take me because the person I scheduled with did not make it in that day - no phone call. I would love to support a local salon run by women, but truly, the unprofessional manner with which they conduct business, their lack of concern for customers, and the general sense that they are high end, worth the jacked up prices, and above needing to care about the customer is just terrible. I've had 2 experiences with Mina's & both gave me the same impression: Mina's is always crowded & cater only to their established customers. Both times I was rushed through and felt like a cyper & the place felt like Grand Central Station: noisy, crowded, chaotic, stressed. What's all the fuss with Mina's? The first time I went, the haircut cost $35 and it was a big nothing! no shape, no design, just done in a hurry. The second time I went was for a pedicure: two pedicure stations are jammed into a small room between a dressing table, a bathroom & a storage area. There was no peace, no privacy & the pedicurist chatted with a family member while doing the pedicure. I felt awkward, out of place, embarrassed & quite irritated. It was fairly pricey as well. Not professional, not a spa atmosphere. I think Mina's is only popular b/c there are so few large salons/spas in Chapel Hill. I will go to Raleigh for salons from now on! I was a loyal customer of Mina's for over two years, consistently seeing a high-level stylist (Shelia - who was great!). I never left the salon without scheduling my next appointment, which was usually highlights with a haircut. Nonetheless, I never felt like I was a client of the salon, but rather just of Sheila's. Looking around when you're there, the salon feels like a collection of stylists in business for themselves, not a team of people working for the best customer experience. As time went on, the environment felt gradually more competitive than collaborative. Besides the barista, none of the other stylists or managers would even attempt small talk while I waited for my color to process, and few would even talk to Shelia. Recently, Mina's let go several of their most experienced - and longest-serving - stylists, including both Sheila and another stylist who I had tried out after she left. I can only assume this was a cost-cutting move, but as a client who seeks out experienced (and therefore more expensive) stylists, it was very disconcerting. Without a friendly atmosphere, and confidence in keeping a relationship with a stylist I can trust, I've decided to move on from Mina's and not look back. Miraculously, weeks later, I walked into Forever Young Salon and Spa (Southern Village) for a some pre-wedding pampering, and found my Shelia! read more

An extra star for the ease of making an appointment here and friendly receptionists. I stopped going here after one too many bad haircuts. I was a client of the owner's and the quality of her cuts rapidly deteriorated the longer I was a customer. She would cut or highlight my hair in rapid time, often pawning me off on another stylist for the blow dry. She always seemed to have friends and family visiting, which greatly distracted her. Okay, I promise I'm not trying to hate up on Mina's. In fact, quite the opposite, I really want to love it because of its convenience to my office and my gym, its reputation, and the fact that I have a big ol' hunkin' gift certificate that I need to use up here. But my second visit was a little disappointing. I called ahead to book a Sunday appointment with one of their makeup artists. They offer on their website a general makeup application which starts at $45. That's all I needed -- just a little more 'perfection' if you will for a photo shoot. I called to book the appointment and the receptionist (who was very nice!) reiterated that price, and then asked for a little more info from me so she could ascertain which artist to put me with. I reluctantly (and I say this because truly, any time you mention anything related by three degrees to weddings, the price seems to sky-rocket) that I had an engagement photo shoot. She said she'd put me with Tiffany (if memory serves) who has a more bridal style. She asked for a credit card to save the date (which I thought was odd, but have run into this before with wedding stuff, so offered it up). When I arrived for my appointment, I thought it prudent to just double-check that I was indeed still receiving the general make-up application service. I was shocked to learn that no, in fact, they had booked me for "bridal" makeup -- which is not only more expensive, it lasts longer than I'd planned to be there. Having worked in many menial jobs for many years, and knowing this was not the fault of the person behind the desk, I truly tried not to have a melt-down on the spot. But being totally emotional already--and feeling grossly taken advantage of-- I did get teary-eyed and stutter something about it being "unfortunate" because I did not need nor request to have bridal makeup -- and frankly, I would have just told them it was for a "hot date" if I'd known they were going to shadily book me for a different service. The receptionist explained that they'd blocked out the time necessary for bridal, and that it was really up to the stylist on whether she'd be able to accommodate a 'downgrade', so to speak. Okay, so all that aside -- luckily! -- the makeup artist was SO super nice and talented and accommodating. So it all worked out dandy. They use Aveda products. She did a very natural approach, with very light coverage and minimal contouring. But it was exactly what I'd requested in the first place, so I was very pleased with it. BIGGEST RIP OFF. BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE These reviews are real!!!! I called and made an appointment the receptionist said she could book me at 3:45. I specifically said, I just want a cut. The receptionist even asked me when I arrived again what I was looking for and I said, just a cut and because of my hesitation and reading previous reviews I asked what level stylist I had and she said ohh la la "platinum level stylist". Three major things: #1. I felt like I was keeping him from going home even though it closed at 6. Well I arrived at 3:45, sat in the chair at 3:58 and was done at 4:25. This included a wash, cut and an unasked for "$15 style" which i'll get into. #2. He didn't listen to a damn thing I said. A. I told him I part my hair on the right, I want my bangs to be angled long and brush across my face and should barely be pulled behind my ears. Well I have this awful chunk of hair in my face that is literally at my eyebrows. Thanks for the 5 yo bangs B. I only wanted an inch to 2 inches off the length. I use a big roller brush to have long layers to give my hair more volume, but my hair had grown out so much that i couldn't roll the back of my head (arms to short haha). I use mousse and curl it all under. Well my hair now looks like I got attacked by a lawn mower. Their are no layers. i literally have a long mullet. the back of my head has a chunk that is the "long part" and the rest is all chopped up. He took so much of my hair off that he actually thinned my hair. I have no volume in the back of my head. There are no flowing layers that can be curled to add volume it looks like a feather all the way down. #3. I asked for a cut. which on their website goes to $45. He blow dried my hair. Which took a whopping 2 minutes. Apparently that 2 minutes of blow drying (no style and if you think taking a roll brush and holding hair is styling than I must have had a stroke) cost me another $15. WHICH I NEVER ASKED FOR THIS CRAPPY "STYLE" AKA BLOW DRY- TO BEGIN WITH! Well the girl at the front desk was like that will be $60, FOR WHAT? FOR 30 MINUTES AND A CHILDS HAIRCUT? The only reason why I didn't start screaming was because I was on the verge of tears. So not only did they rip me off when I clearly said I just wanted a cut, and then upcharge me for $15 for a "style" aka blow dried my hair but they ruined my hair. Just stay away. Next time I will fly home just to go to a real salon where people actually listen to you, and give you a haircut that you asked for. argggg I'm so embarrassed to leave the house I've been wearing a baseball cap all day :( Please don't go here you will seriously regret it. read more

I have been to Mina's several times throughout the years, but have never experienced the horrifying recklessness that I endured last Friday! My waxing (Brazilian) was beyond scary - Jenny did not wear gloves and DOUBLE DIPPED THE WOODEN STICK! She left me bloody and with wax dots everywhere. She then used a very strong oil from a little brown bottle that was totally irritating. I spoke with one of the owners and was careless, rude and dismissive. Big mistake, he was condescending, didn't listen and he took forever! I left with the worst highlights and cut of my life. I've been going to Mina's for 3 years now, my former boss turned me on to it and bought me my first gift certificate. They have the best products I've ever used. Stephanie cuts and colors my hair and it is the best I've ever seen it. Even when the color starts to fade, it's still beautiful. However the price is WAY out of control. Cut and color with no tip is $125. And I don't ever have her blow dry my hair so no stying is involved beyond the cut. But the cut itself is fantastic! I have been there for other spa services and thought I would try them for my bridal hair and makeup. I set up an appointment with Gabby through the bridal coordinator Crystal. I explained to her that I wanted to come on the day of my engagement shoot for my trial so I would have hair and makeup done for that too. No Problem she says, right. I get there and Gabby insists that we can't do my hair trial because they would be different styles for the engagement vs. wedding photos, but not really, I wasn't planning a big hair helmet up-do so she plays with my hair and smooths out the curls a little - total of talking and working 10 min tops! Then we go to do my makeup, she drops foundation on my work pants and I end up looking like a Miss America Pageant trainwreck. When I go to check out they want to not only charge me for the makeup but also the hair trial, which in my mind was not done and was a waste of my time as I had to use vacation to make this appointment and was told I needed to come back another day for the true wedding hair trial. What a SCAM. So, the crux of the matter is Crystal did not seem to know what she was talking about when she booked the appointment, Gabby was sloppy, I was not happy with the end-product and they were just plain rude, no customer services values and fairly arrogant. I will never go back there and will definitely steer people away from using them for any services. read more

I don't understand how there isn't another higher-end salon in Chapel Hill. They would MOW Mina's down. I've been here over the years for a couple haircuts and several manicures, all of which were positively ABYSMAL. Both times they cut my hair way too short (what about "I need to still be able to pull it back into a ponytail" don't you understand? How is that a complex request?) and the one time I had my hair colored, the colorist left the bleach on my scalp too long and I left with chemical burns all over my scalp... that was fun. The manicures have both been sloppy work done in a cramped back closet room of the salon by testy women who have their children with them at work. And for as much as they charge for a mani/pedi, they should include a scrub or something on your feet - nada. read more

This was my first time visiting Mina's, my longtime hairstylist [Karen Proulx] started working here a month ago and I finally scheduled an appointment. The process was easy, the staff friendly, and I love the option to have a reminder email sent and the ability to request an appointment online. I definitely agree with some of the other reviews here. It's very overpriced and the haircuts are mediocre. I've been there 3 times for a haircut with a mid-level stylist and I was never impressed except for the bill!!! Recently, I went for a mani and pedi and while they seemed to be more sanitary than most cheap nail salons, the work on my nails was not worth the price. I've also had make up done and that is the only thing I've been fully satisfied with. The location is very convenient for me and that's the main reason I keep going back. read more

I had a brow wax, massage, and haircut at Mina's last fall (08). My wax and massage were wonderful, but my haircut was horr-i-ble. The stylist was unpleasant and distracted, did a poor job with the cut and I looked better when I walked in the door than when I left. I was extremely unhappy and emailed the salon to tell them so. They were extremely apologetic, and scheduled me a cut with one of the owners, Alejandra, who did a wonderful job with my hair and was appreciative of their opportunity to correct the bad experience. That was my first time to the salon, so I don't know if the quality has decreased or the prices increased. Based on my initial experience I would not have returned, but the fact that they jumped at the chance to make it right means a lot so I'd recommend them. I just can't give 4 or 5 stars since it took a second visit to correct it. read more

I used to get my hair cut at Mina's by a great hairstylist named Heather, and was never disappointed with my hair cut, but was disappointed that her fee kept increasing. It started at $30 and was quickly up to $45 in the 2 years that I saw her. If you can fork over the cash, I would recommend going here, especially if you're new to the area and need a nice hair cut. If you have the time (and the courage) to try a few places, you might want to skip Mina's as they tend to be the most expensive in the area. read more

I came to Mina's studio with multicolored brassy hair. I wasn't sure if it was fixable and I wanted to go back to blonde. Darius, my stylist did an incredible job and went with a blonde balayage that transformed my dull hair into a beautiful blonde color that looked natural. I highly recommend Darius as he was both personable and professional. This was my first time at Mina's and I will definitely be coming back! read more

I have never left a public complaint about a place, but this is worth my time to keep other people from spending far too much money for subpar services. I scheduled a haircut and facial at Mina's after seeing them ranked on Indy's best in the triangle. The cut was fine, nothing amazing or detrimental to the experience (I only ask for a clean-up of my ends, so not much could go wrong). My facial was scheduled for 30 minutes after my cut finished. I was told that my facialist was just finishing setting up and it'd be any minute when the appointment was already 15 minutes late starting. Well, just under an hour went by and finally i was called back. Being an hour late was annoying, but i wasn't going to show agitation and let it spoil my experience. I had scheduled the most expensive procedure, so I knew i'd have a good amount of time to relax and ease away this stress. My facial felt rushed as if she was trying to make up on time for another client. The longest part was letting the mask dry on my face, which she just sat there doing nothing the whole time. When I had a facial at the Grove Park Resort, my facialist massaged the tension in my neck, shoulders, arms, hands and head. Although it was listed as a part of the relaxation and part of the facial at Mina's, this was not part of mine, which is a big part of a facial to me (especially feeling stressed at losing an hour of my day sitting and waiting and then being rushed while i was spending so much money). I was so disappointed and initially thought I'd found a great place to start going regularly. Now, i know that is definitely not the case. read more
